[Q] Strange Boot Loop Issue (MK2, SS 3.71) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I've generally managed to root and/or customize most of my devices with the help from these forums, but this one has me stumped. I picked up an AT&T Galaxy S4 recently, and unfortunately it was already on a locked bootloader. I was able to root and install Safestrap 3.71 with little trouble. After some tweaking of the stock ROM, I decided to have a go with some custom ones.
Until recently, I'd been able to flash just about any SS-compatible ROM to any slot with little to no issue. Some required flashing of GApps, or Kernels, but aside from a few FC's or signal issues, the actual flashing portions always went smoothly. I ended up flashing DarthStalker vX1 to my stock slot with the MK2 kernels and have had zero issues with the ROM functionality. Being curious about recent developments with other ROM's, I decided to try flashing a few. The problem I'm having is that 90% of the ones I try to flash are going into a boot loop. Even those that worked previously (Hyperdrive, SHOstock) are boot looping.
I have tried deleting and recreating various ROM slots and at one point I managed to get SHOstock (SS) 3.0 to boot, but all of the GApps were crashing to the point where it was unusable, regardless of GApps I flashed over it for testing purposes.
I guess I'm wondering if there may be some sort of issue with having a custom ROM in the stock slot? Perhaps some sort of file or data corruption that is stopping these ROM's from working, even though they all worked previously? It just doesn't seem to be making sense because I don't believe I've changed anything since the last time I was able to flash to any SS slot. I've tried searching, but pretty much all of the boot loop issues I've come across were related to something that I've either already ruled out, or simply didn't apply to my configuration. Any hints or tips would be great. Please let me know if anyone needs more information about the config, or steps I've taken so far. Thanks all!

I believe for HyperDrive u also need to install Att compatible pack and u also need flash ATT mk2 kernel modules .... check this thread about MK2 INDEX and ROM LISTS by @guut13 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221 anything u should know about all the compatible roms and instruction. ....u might get better help on that thread since alot of Rom flashaholic there. ...check with @ddubz he is flashaholic Master.....:thumbup:.... Once you flash a bad ROM on Stock slot and you boot loop, you are cooked. Only way to fix it is to Odin back to stock. Then you can restart the process.
If you flash a bad ROM on a ROM slot, you can just delete the ROM slot, recreate it, and you will be good to go for another try.
That's been my experience, anyways.

Thanks for the reply. I've read through quite a few of the threads for the individual ROMs, but unfortunately the issue isn't related to any one specific ROM. I do have the compatibility pack and modules for HyperDrive and I was able to successfully get that installed previously. I was using that as an example of a ROM that worked before with this same configuration, which is why it's bugging me. I'll wipe out the existing slot 1 and give it another go, making sure I flash those as well. Unfortunately that doesn't explain why SHOstock (which I tested extensively before), and others go into a boot loop as well.
The only thing I can think of is perhaps I'm not wiping properly. So far, whenever I attempt to install a new ROM, I create a new slot with the default size values, do a factory reset, install ROM and any module/kernel recommended with it, wipe cache, reboot. Not sure what else I could be doing wrong.

Thankfully I don't think I've had any truly bad flashes that resulted in a brick, or even a partial brick. My stock slot is running a custom (Darthstalker) ROM that is still fully functional through all of this other testing. I do have backups of my original stock config, as well as a recent backup of the DS ROM in the stock slot, so I'm not sure it's related to a bad ROM in that slot. It's just really strange that ROMs that were working just fine before in any slot are now causing loops. I haven't had to Odin back to stock or anything, but I'm considering doing that just to get back to a clean base. It just seems unnecessary since my stock slot is still 100% functional. No signal drops, all wifi and bluetooth connections work flawlessly, etc.
I'm usually the guy that scours these forums until I find a solution, but this problem is just plain weird. As you can see from my post count, this is the first time I've thrown up my hands and asked for help. I'm not even sure there is anything really broken. It could very easily be something stupid I have or haven't done. It's just frustrating when I flash a ROM that I've verified the MD5 on, and I know for a fact has worked previously. I'll keep plugging away at it and post back if I figure out what's going on. Thanks again!

@remedee If I were u..... Follow my thread to go back to stock MK2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279 check post #2 for guide on how to. After u got fresh MK2 firmware ..... root it.... install safestrap v3.71 and then create rom slot 1 first to see if the rom stable enough ....If it does then make your rom slot 1 back up .....then wipe your stock slot..... restore your rom slot 1 back up to stock slot or follow @guut13 instruction noted on every compatible rom lists from his thread. ..... Goodluck....:good:

Just to be clear, I didn't necessarily mean bricked when I said cooked, but kind of. I tested a bunch of ROMs for my threads. If i flashed one that didn't work, my phone would usually boot loop...
samsung logo, safestrap menu, black screen, reboot, samsung logo, safestrap menu, black screen, reboot, and so on...
If I stopped the boot loop by going back into safestrap, no matter how many times I wiped or which ever ROM I flashed next (even known working ones), I always went back into a boot loop after rebooting. Only thing that worked was odin back to stock. (Can't remember if I tried restoring, though.)
ROM slot was different. Deleting it and recreating was all it took. That's why I learned my lesson and just test new roms on ROM slot first.

next time you try to flash one and it fails try making the data partition smaller. Had a guy pm me and couldn't get rom to boot and i had him do this and bam it booted right up. Worth a shot. Also i have switched phones i went to the nexus 5 and i am not as fresh with the s4 stuff as i was a few weeks ago. PM if you need any help

I still plan to Odin back to stock but I didn't have time tonight. I did however grab a ROM from the link provided by ted77usa (thanks man, I can't seem to figure out how to mention at the moment). The Wicked v10 ROM installed to a clean Slot 1. I know that DarthStalker installed using Aroma, and Wicked is one of the few that I've tested that also uses Aroma. I don't know if it makes a difference, but this is the first ROM to install without a boot loop since I started having trouble.
I'm also wondering if the fact that this ROM had never been installed before has anything to do with it. I'm going to back it up since it's functional, then wipe and try to reinstall just to see if I get a boot loop. Thanks again to everyone for all of the input.

Sorry for the delay in getting back on this. My toddler finds new and interesting ways of keeping me from my hobbies Just wanted to say thanks to @ted77usa @guut13 and @ddubz. I tried resizing the partition and that didn't seem to help. I ended up starting from scratch and everything seems to be running properly. I've got DarthStalker back in the stock slot, Wicked in slot 1 and Hyperdrive in slot 2. I'm quite certain it's overkill, but just knowing I can switch between them and tinker makes me happy. Thanks again for all the input. XDA is definitely an awesome community.

[Q] gt-i9500 and kitkat custom roms incompatibility? HUH?

As the title says I have an International GT_I9500 unlocked
Until now I was always able to install any custom rom I wanted , no problem, just wipe and install and away we went.
Now with KitKat, I AM COMPLETELY UNABLE TO INSTALL ANY OF THE CUSTOM ROMS FOR 4.4.2 -0 NONE WORKS. I can't believe i am jinxed.
I wiped everything, cache, dalvik, system and internal and also did a full wipe - NOTHING WORKED, There are 3 custom roms for 4.4.2 so far and NONE = NOT A SINGLE ONE WANTS TO INSTALL.
I downloaded one of Samsung original 4.4.2 firmware and using Odin I WAS ABLE TO INSTALL AND MAKE IT WORK, yet after doing this, I tried to install any of the 3 customs roms and BOOM, COMPLETE FAILURE
Can anyone help PLEASE GUYS, I feel like BROOMHILDA LONE PERSON WITH A CLOUD ONLY ON MY HEAD
I am curious as to why this is happening
maybe its a i9505 or i9506 rom

I loaded the custom roms via recovery, not via odin,
so i go into recovery mode via TeamWin, wipe everything and load the custom rom, message says "successful" and i reboot system, that's it
the phone hangs into one of the boot animations and never finishes, left it for longer than 30 minutes, all of them , nothing loads.
go back the same custom roms but with android 4.3 and first shot, loads fine, all of them, same ones that won't load the 4.4.2 load the 4.3
most custom roms load via recovery not odin -
last try was load samsung original firmware 4.4.2 via download Odin, then root then install teamwin recovery. - worked fine
now removed it and reinstalled Thor 4.3 (thor 4.4.2 doesn't work) but tomorrow i'll wipe it and reinstall the samsung 4.4.2 unless you have an idea
*i hope)
sorry about the capitals - NO IT IS AN EXYNOS UNLOCKED GT-I9500 - almost a year after playing with nova settings, xposed and about a dozen custom roms, i THINK i know it's a 9500 - skip the silly suggestions - we're all noobs but not necessarily all boobs
thanks for your help - appreciated if we can solve it

i usually use teamwin version 2.6.3
and funny thing in one of the wipes even the teamwin was wiped so i wound using the regular android recovery, with the tiny tiny blue characters
that doesn't have all the teamwin recovery options - so even then it failed
after installing the saunsung 4.4.2 i downloaded a fresh teamwin version and installed via odin/download - like starting from zero. guess what
nope even then the roms freeze at the bootanimation - but the joke is ONLY IF THEY ARE VERSIONS 4.4.2 -they work fine with version 4.3
and when i mean wipe i mean wipe - cache/dalvik/system/internal - and even the other option where you have to type YES for the wipe to go on.
short of reformating the whole memory which i think is excessive, i THINK i tried with a clean clean memory install (according to me)
thanks for your patience
btw most of the custom roms install via recovery so there's no way to get a download install version

Once you flashed stock 4.4.2, your bootloader gets updated, so you can only use 4.4+ roms, also TWRP is full of bugs, just use cwm 6.0.4.5 and you're set.
Also, did you root the stock 4.4.2?

AFTER ALL THIS I tried to install one of the 4.4.2 custom roms - IT FAILED CONSISTENTLY - BY THIS I MEAN ALL ROMS DIED AT BOOTANIMATIONS - AND ALL FAILED TO START
thanks so much
Try with latest Philz recovery or any up to date CWM recovery.
And when coming from stock, you generally have to FULL wipe you phone

just downloaded cwm version 6.0.4.6 installed via recovery. launched recovery installed latest wanamlite for 4.4.2 - message was "installed successfully" please reboot
i rebooted and for the last 15 minutes all i have is a BIG SAMSUNG on the screen - nothing beyond
just another hitch with kitkat - i have a SONY XPERIA Z TABLET with wifi and sim - a couple of weeks ago i rooted it but the cwm version is not good because it's on the vertical side and you cannot see the bottom of the menu so it's useless - anyhow. i rooted it and left it at that.
i got notice from sony that a new os version (kitkat) was ready for install - so I just told the tablet to start - and the os install screwed the tablet,
there was no way to reload and it completely deleted the memory , it went to sony to reload - so i have a big hunch there is something not right somewhere -
anyway the phone still has the SAMSUNG and it ain't going anywhere while i am writing all this
very discouraging = sure as heck i ain't buying no more galaxys of any sort, i was ready to preorder the s5 at 455british pound, unlocked - but since this i am dropping samsung, i like very very much the xperia tablet it's faster than the s4 so perhaps i'll jump to the sony xperia fone and bbye korea
maybe i9505 rom
custom roms failure, huh?
i know you're trying to help - but if you read all the previous (long and boring) messages - there's no mistakes, there's no 9505
ALL THE ROMS I DOWNLOAD AND USE - ALL OF THEM WITHOUT EXCEPTION come for the i9500 development area, I DON'T BOTHER WITH
9505 - MOSTLY BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE A 9505
UPDATE - today after loading the latest cwm recovery i got lucky to be able to load ONE - READ IT - ONE CUSTOM ROM ( rom from HASAN)
this is the very only that i got to work, the other two just refuse to finish the boot - i don't know where they freeze.
even the wanamlite custom rom for 4.4.2 freezes - this is really annoying and a puzzle - this is my fourth samsung fone and never ever did i
find the bug that freeze everything. I hope that some of the other developers will come up with new kitkat versions for the 9500 and see if the bug persists or not -
any help will absolutely be appreciated, guys, some sort of boot log that can help pinpoint,
thanks again
You know the fact you keep using capital letters (so you might be trying to scream) is a little annoying.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9500. I live in Costa Rica (so not in the US obviously).
I installed stock 4.4.2 using ODIN, then flashed ROOT and finally installed a custom CWM. First I tried Philz and ended up with 6.0.4.6.
I have already tried 2 different custom ROM's but I didn't like them so I went back to stock. I am very satisfied with the performance of my phone with stock, but that's not the point.
The thing is that I have the same phone you have, i installed the same software you installed, I followed the same steps you have followed yet I am able to install any custom ROM i like.
Maybe it is your phone, or maybe you're just looking for an excuse to quit Samsung and you're simply blaming kitkat your inability of installing ROMs now.
I'm just saying... there are several options you can tried if you quit being angry and actually try them.
Personally, I would start from scratch. Flashing via ODIN again, rooting accordingly with the right files, using a recovery that is recognized to work with 4.4.2, and finally using the right custom ROM.

-------------------------------------------------------
First - The capitals I used were ONLY to emphasize certain aspects and not intended as screaming, which is the usual sense - That was not my intention,
Second - I have being using Samsung for the last 7 years, I was not intending to leave until I hit this brick and further I nearly went to Clove, UK (where I usually pre-ordered my last 3 Galaxy's - months ahead of delivery) so thumping me by saying I am looking for an excuse to dump Samsung, is way off base, so much so, that if that indeed was my intention, why for all heavens would i bother to find a solution, and waste so much time and effort to make it work
Third - I have being as polite as any person can be, with or without, this hitch, don't judge, about being angry or not, you don't know me well enough to know the difference, just stick to the point in question without getting personal.
Fourth - What I have described is EXACTLY to a tee what is happening to me, what happened to YOU , is IRRELEVANT, you may be one of the lucky ones who has no issues installing the roms in questions. so unless you do have a suggestion as to finding the reason the fone loops on boot, skip what you did or didn't do, they are IRRELEVANT, because they don't provide a solution.
Fifth - If you read my descriptions you will notice the many times I installed customs roms on the many galaxy's and Note's I have/had.That ought to clue you that i know a basic way on how to do the installations (Odin, recovery, teamwin. cmw,) you name it I've done it, and i've unbricked more than once my fones. so yes i do know how to use Odin
Sixth - For some reason I was able to install the "HASSAN" rom (the ONLY and ONLY) 4.4.2 custom that worked. the others they just won't, PERIOD
So if you have a technical solution as to how to get a log of the looping so we can tell exactly at what point the fone loops. or some other technical solutions, please let me know them asap I am dying to see my fone with a custom 4.4.2,
Seventh - Yes I am extremely disappointed that the S5 is just not fantastic enough to lay 455GBP to pre-order. there are a few more advances but it is "ALMOST" good = the bezel didn't disappear - the 2K display isn't there - the sharper casing is still missing - the better battery is still not there - the wireless charging - To have 2000 horse power engine under the hood of a beat up VW beatle. doesn't make you good looking enough to go cruising on a saturday nite and brag about your "car" -
BTW = I am absolutely no fan of the Iphone (yuk) nor of Sony (which is as restricted as apple)
Can you help solve my issue - thanks

[Q] Very confused about what options are available to someone with nc4,

Hello all, I posted a similar topic a few days back, and cannot seem to find it. I fear it was deleted, but could be wrong. I only looked back a few pages in the history.
My problems have multiplied since that posting. I have nc4, when I bought my phone it was on there. Used towelroot and was able to root, download safestrap 3.75 and was able to add/delete slots, attempted to use hyperdrive, experienced a lot of weird things like my SMS would randomly not send, battery life was not spectacular, and just other misc things. IT seemed like I might have used a rom that could not be used properly for nc4. I then tried bajarom, which completely does not work for my phone, probably because it's nc2 and I didn't realize that?? Tried jellybeanz or whatever the exact name was, my phone won't even boot, says it successfully installed but sticks on the black screen.
Somehow over the past few days I managed to wipe my stock so I do not have the stock, thus I cannot go back.
I am sure I can find or maybe be directed to the stock firmware and reflash it.
I am not sure if it's possible but I'd really love to be able to get nc2, or if someone more knowledgable than myself could point out a solution for me, I would like to have a custom rom if theres one that would work properly on my phone.
Another confusion I have, with the nc4, am I able to use odin to flash a different radio, should I even bother? I would sincerely appreciate someone who would help clear some of this up for me, I'm pretty novice as you can see. Thanks in advance.
update
I guess my question is unclear. I really can use some help if anyone would be so obliged.
I am trying to use ADB to push the file over, it says access denied, I was previously rooted and verified as much. My issue is I need a way to send the roms over to my SD or my regular phone internal mem so I can at least load a rom. Currently my phone is bricked and I am just getting very upset, I really could use someone to give me a bit of guidance.
I opened the cmd with admin and it's still saying access denied. IS there a way to force the phone to open as a media device via cmd? That way I can edit sd card info and push on there what needs to go?
I am currently trying to find a way to get hyperdrive, or another rom over.
I have beanstowns rom on there, it appears as .zip yet when I try to install from safestrap I end up exploring the directory, as opposed to just being an option I can choose.
Baja is the same way, both are still on my sd, yet for whatever reason I cannot select them to install them.
Hope is not lost.
I think your initial problem was that you tried using rom slots. It specifies in the Safestrap OP that rom slots are only supported on NC2 bootloader. Since you are on the NC4 bootloader you cannot go backwards, however you can flash the NC2 kernel if you want to run a custom rom, you simply need to use the stock slot alone.
Since I know very little about ADB & Terminal CMD, I will try to give you directions to get up and running the way I know how.
First you'll need to reflash the stock NC4 tar via odin and reroot. Files can be found here.
Since you've flashed a couple different roms that have probably messed with the system settings I would do a factory reset before rerooting.
After you are up, running and rooted, follow the instructions here to get on the NC2 kernel.
Once you've completed these steps you will be on the NC4 bootloader with the NC2 kernel and be able to flash a custom rom in the stock rom slot. Only a NC2+ rom will function so make sure it is based on NC2/NC4 (i.e. jelly 'beans' will not run on NC2+ firmware as it is based on MJE).

firstly, thank you so much for the reply.
I did flash nc2 kernal, but was confused when I still saw nc4 in the about section. I flashed with odin NC2_modem_kk.tar and nc2kernel.tar.
The issue I was having is with hyperdrive, and baja I had some serious issues, so I assumed it was because I was using them incorrectly, ie didn't install one of the above files correctly, or did something else wrong in the process. Just for example, with hyperdrive, my sms would just stop sending/receiving/ double sending. My sim card was not being recognized. And a whole lot of other issues.. So I kept messing around and now im at a point where nothing boots up, I cannot reflash, and I'm just stuck.
I will follow your link and attempt to do as you said, will wipe, and then will try again.

Alright, I applied to nc4 and did a factory reset, made sure all my slots were deleted (had 2). Then factory reset and rebooted, saw safestrap, pressed continue, and i'm looking at a blank screen now as though there is nothing to boot to. I was under the impression factory reset would undo all and it has not.

Did you already boot into download mode and flash the correct files through Odin? If so that should set your phone back to stock. Then you would have to re root.

I did and it did not boot me back into stock. I then found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922461which led me to download the files directly from samsung.
After downloading the official partition table/ modem/ kernal from the verizon website I finally have this back to stock. LOL. wow. Thank you very much for helping, and working with me on this.

Seriously, just Google for the Samsung official firmware. It's on their site. Not Verizon.

NEED HELP QUICK, fast, and in a hurry please

Alright, so i soft bricked my phone is what the internet is telling me. the phone turns on but stops at the opening samsung screen with the unlock symbol on it. i can get into odin mode, and recovery, but i have a locked recovery. I went to flash a rom to my stock slot which is what the forum said to do so i did it. looking back it was pretty stupid, and now when i tried to recover my back up it came back with an error and then said there was no os system in my stock slot. i tried doing a recovery in rom slot 1 which it recovered but when i restarted my phone everytime it went into a boot loop. so now i have a very expensive paperweight. so my questions are one is there anyway that i could salvage my phone. two is there a way i could get it back to where i was with any of my recoveries that i have. i herd the odin method works but will it work for my phone? i tried the odin before but never could get it to work. also kies is out of the question because neither programs will recognize my phone.
oh yeah my phone. so the last thing i had running on it was the 4.4.2 update I337 NC1 would i have to flash the NC1 os or could i flash an earlier one because all i could find were the 4.2.2's and the NB1 flash.

1. As long as you can get into Odin mode, you're ok.
2. if you are on NB1 or NC1 base running safestrap 3.72, stock slot is the ONLY slot you can use. ROM slots do not work.
3. it's not really clear what you did to cause the boot loop, but lets get you back to stock...
Check out post 5 in my thread. If you follow these steps, you should be back to stock (and rooted with recovery, if you want) in no time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
BTW - Post 2 has a list of ROMs that are safe to flash for safetrap users. Read the install notes first then follow the install instructions to install one of the ROMS.

sir i will tell you that your a genius. its pretty cool to see the creator of the link you posted (which is you) being used on other sites. goes to show you really know what you are doing. for me well i thought i did, and wish i did. it might be awhile before i change roms again or at least until i get more knowledge.
ok so from my understanding safestrap is having difficulties being you and only flash in the stock slot. ok well what i did was flashed the hyperdrive rom (from your link) to the stock slot because in the hyperdrive forum it said only can flash on stock. so i did a full wipe on stock then flashed the hyperdrive and gapps. well my guess is when i did the full wipe it wiped the os. also i didn't grab the supporting modules for the rom so i didnt have wifi or service which made me try to restore from my nandroid and couldnt because it said error loading /system. then tried other things i thought would work and softbricked it so to that.
i think for newbies like myself its a lot of reading and well we could miss some things and screw things up. and plus samsung had to make different freakin models like the i337 or i9505 or the i9000 or something and everything has to be the exact same and perfect. but oh well. i am happy to tell you that my phone is fully restored and working from the day before all this happened. thanks again and sorry for the long message.

[Q] AT&T SG4 SGH-I337 Slow

Hello. Sorry for the noobie question. I tried to search the forums, and I did find the noob beginner guide, but I still wasn't sure, so I prefer to ask before I screw up my phone lol.
I have the AT&T SG4 SGH-I337 Phone. It was fine before it was upgraded to 4.4.2 (I didn't want to upgrade, but it did it on its own one day). Once it went to 4.4.2, everything is just DOG SLOW. I mean everything. In Car Audio takes forever to connect, phone calls takes like 5 secs to answer, even after I press the answer button. To unlock the phone I have to press the code 2-3 times, as I can see the keys I press is lagging behind.
What I wanted to ask is this: How can I bring this phone back to the previous OS? Or How can I modify this phone to a stock OS, where all this bloatware crap is not installed?
All I care for is my Bluetooth, in car audio and calls and have a phone that's fast enough as it was originally.
can someone point me to the right thread where it gives me step by step instructions? Ive never modified a Samsung Phone before.
I found this thread, but wasn't sure if its the right one for my phone.

Thank you VERY MUCH. Thanks....
Don't use those links, some are redirecting me to questionable sites. Not sure if it does to you also.
I don't have time atm but someone will get you the correct info. :good:
It may have been a bad download that updated you--
Also, those files are too old for you if you look at thread date--

This would be a starting point

Assume you are now on NC1
Believe you will need to Odin back to NB1 then update to NC1
If you want to root other steps involved--This thread covers it pretty well
Some one else more familiar can be exact, as I am on old bootloader and no handson exp--
Read the OP on the link very well and generally not a good idea to use links outside xda unless you are 120% sure of what you are doing--good luck--

I would suggest getting the Google Play Edition rom as stock android is much better optimized. Tutorials are available on the all things NC1 post. This will require root and installing a custom rom. Your warranty (if still applicable) will be void if you choose to do this. Regardless, the software on the device is not well optimized and the touchwiz UI is unnecessary imo. The GPE rom also does not have the samsung or at&t bloatware.

The google play ROM I would not mind, but I cant seem to find a way to root my SG4 NC1 firmware.
Do you happen to have a link or directions, please?

Use the "All things ATT" link rugmankc gave you. In the first posts in that thread you will get links to the root method, safestrap, and a list of compatible ROMs. A few thoughtsL
1. Before making any changes to you phone, charge it to 100 %, unplug the charger, and let it sit idle for some number of hours. Then check to see what services are using most of the power. For a while my own 4.4.2 GS4 was slow, and it turned out to be google play framework services bogging things down, and this showed up as an excessive battery drain during idle. If you phone uses more than say 0.5% battery per hour when completely idle / screen off (but with cell and wifi on), something's up. Fix it and maybe your problems will resolve.
2. Next step: back up any data / photos etc. and do a factory data reset from the settings menu. After it has been reset, perhaps whatever problem is going on will be cleared up.
3. You don't need to root the phone to ODIN a stock firmware (NB1 then flash update to NC1). Links are on the ALL Things ATT thread. This should take it all the way back to proper NC1, bypassing any mess that might have happened if you got a corrupt flash during your OTA update.
If the phone still performs so poorly as you describe after a flash back to stock, there's a problem that's more than the OS/ROM. Sure, the stock build is a bit laggy and bloated, but it's not so bad as what you are seeing.
If you find a restored stock ROM to be better but still laggier than you like, I have had good results with the GoldenEye ROM, flashed according to the instructions in the ATT thread. To flash, you must first root and install safestrap (selinux mode changer set to permissive may be required). You then boot to the safestrap recovery, wipe everything but the SD card, then flash the rom, SuperSU, ATT Module, and ATT BuildProp/APN. That should get you up and running on a new ROM.
I'm a died in the wool geek but I read through this forum and others for two weeks before attempting... but I'm very happy with the phone as it works on GoldenEye. I'm on V36, but V38 is current.
Good luck

Thank you very much for your help. Yeah everytime I redo my phone, from scratch, it works OK for about an hour. Then bam, it goes back to being a low pain in the rear. This is ONLY after the phone upgraded to 4.4.2. I didn't choose that upgrade, actually I didn't want to upgrade, but OTA upgrade took over and BAM, I got screwed.
OK I just installed the Safestrap and rooted the phone. Now I gotta figure out the rom part.
Im still going thru that link that rugmankc gave me above. Now im trying to figure out how to change the OS, since I just rooted the phone. I have to do this. Ive gotten really really tired of the phone being so slow, I basically give up on many tasks that I need to do, just cause its too slow.
Ill update once I get it figured out, hopefully I wont brick it, that's the only thing that im afraid of.
Don't remember, did you consider Odin back to stock and start over. If not, whatever was causing the slow downs may still be there. Could have been a bad update.
Read the SafeStrap thread by HashCode carefully. I read the OP 100% and last 30 pages or so of thread and don't even use it. It is complicated to me. IE which slot to flash to stock or rom. I think stock, Flash Modules. Install Selinux and set to permissive. And using correct SafeStrap. Gives me a headache and I am not even needing to use it--
Good Luck--as mentioned just backup whenever you can before moving to next major step. :good::good:

Thank you. Actually I backed up my phone already, as I reformatted it last night again. I don't know how to Odin back to stock. What is that? Is that a stock Android? Sorry I don't know.
Thanks...
It's in the same All Things ATT, MK2 thread under Returning to Stock Odin. An option if you still have issues. Takes you back to stock NB1, firmware and all. Kinda like your update, but think you may have got a bad update. Other options are to wipe internal in case bad stuff still there. Frankenscript was pretty thorough--:good:
SafeStrap is how you are going to flash a new OS/Rom. You can't flash custom kernels and aosp roms unless TW based like a couple GPE mentioned.
Read/Scan the two mentioned threads, as in OP and first and last couple dozen pages. Probably the last are more important. You will see folks asking the same questions you will eventually ask. I have read thousands of pages over the years and it has kept me out of trouble--most of the time--

Man, that link really got me confused as heck lol. Ive been reading that link the entire weekend and still im a bit confused.
I rooted the phone with towelroot. Ive installed SafeStrap, but it worked the first time I ran it. Now if I want to run it again it crashes my phone. Not sure what that is about.
Either way, now my understanding is that I should be able to download a rom for my phone and flash it. From that link that I was given, its very confusing.
Could someone PLEASE PLEASE help me here with this?
My phone is an AT&T US SG4. Here are the details:
SAMSUNG-SGH-I337
Android 4.4.2
BaseBand I337UCUFNC1
Kernel Ver 3.4.0-1125940
Build # KOT49H.I337UCUFNC1
Which ROM can I use for my phone? As long as its stock, I don't care which version, Google Play ROM or CY or Golden, whichever, as long as I get rid of this crappy Samsung and AT&T stuff off my phone.
Could someone please help me out here? I know that link says everything, but jeez, im trying to make sense of it, and so far, I got the phone rooted, but just cant figure out the ROM part.
Thanks...
I can't help with specifics as I don't need SS.
Make sure you have correct SS--3.72, afaik
Flash, I believe, to stock slot not rom slot but confirm that
Install Selinux app from Play and set Permissive--afaik
The above items are things people get into trouble with, so reconfirm them
Just keep reviewing the thread and the SafeStrap thread in Dev section by HashCode. Maybe go back more pages from end of threads as you have time. You can post in All things thread now for help and at 10 posts in Dev section. It will come together in time--:good:
Flash roms only for you build, think there is a list within that thread or another one in General or Q&A.
iB's Goldeneye 38 is good and you can use the Aroma to select SafeStrap and the Slimmed down version.
Read his SS flashing instructions first.
Make sure you use SafeStrap recovery to wipe ALL--System/Data/Caches before flashing--:good:
Cornelp: Having recently been through all this, I wrote up a short summary with some links for another user, and it might help you to look through it. It's an overview written from my end-user perspective, not a replacement for the detailed posts the devs have done.
However, based on your description, I would say the best thing to do is ODIN back to stock because I have a sneaking suspicious you got a bad OTA flash. It happens. Going back to stock will be the best way to eliminate that as a source of problems. Learn how in the All things ATT thread OP.
Best of luck to you!

Complete instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51130818&postcount=5
Basically, download ODIN to your PC, run it, get phone into download mode, connect phone to PC via USB, in ODIN select the NB1 file, tell it to start. When done, reboot phone. Then flash the NC1 update from an SD card using stock recovery.
A good pictorial description of how to flash can be found in this S3 thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/guide-odin-flash-guide-t1671969
Though for a different phone (the S3, not our S4), the process is still the same.
Good luck. I'm headed off to a work trip and won't be on the forum much this week!

Thank you all. I was able to revert back to the NB1 stock, but it failed the first time. I had to download and install the NB1 Rootable Odin. For some reason, the NB1 Odin didn't work, but the Rootable one worked.
So im glad I was able to go back. Now I just gotta test it and see if it does slow down as it did before. I will post update, in case anyone else has the same problem, maybe this would be a good solution.
Thanks again to all of you guys, really appreciate it. I really hope it worked.

Bricked? No custom or stock rom?

ive had my note 3 for awhile and have avoided rooting or modding it in any way for quite sometime, but i rooted the stock firmware i believe it was 4.4.2???? im not 100% with towelroot and i was able to install safestrap thats where my success ended I didnt make any backups for whatever dumb reason and also it has been quite sometime since modding any phones, now my phone wont boot into any rom ive tried i have tried two so far and i cant get the factory one back, half the time i cant install roms and the rest of the time they work but they wont boot ive tried creating rom slots but those dont work, read somewhere they arent supported in 4.4.2 ???? and when i tried overwriting the factory it still didnt work, now my phone wont boot into anything anymore and im not quite sure what i did wrong and if there is any way to fix it, i would have like to install knoxraid on this phone since it supposedely fixes the gps issues lots of people have when i try to install that particular rom i get a successful message but then when i wipe cache/dalvik it work and then i hit reboot nothing happens, all i get is a black screen oh and its says that safestrap is disabled

May I know which variant on Note3 you are using.
and what's the OS version? 4.3? or 4.4.2 or 4.4.4
what's your region (CSC).??
I would suggest you to go into download mode and download appropriate stock firmware from SamMobile or from Samsung Updates (Link for N9005) and flash Stock ROM using ODIN.
Thanks.
