This all started when I ran out of data on my device and decided to root it so that I could use the SD card. I had previously rooted a droid 2 and a galaxy nexus so I wasn't a complete noob but I'm not in any way a programmer and I had never used Odin. So not wanting to mess with things without having a back up I followed some tutorials and downloaded the android sdk and used adb to back up. I thought I was doing a full system backup but whether I made a mistake or this simply doesn't back up everything I don't know. The file size should have been a clue but I missed it. I did get my apps
I then proceeded to follow the tutorials on this site for rooting the device. They are all for the GT-S7710 but I was hoping the letter (L) was a program only type thing and wouldn't make a difference. I used this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40232503&postcount=45 and downloaded the DEODEXED Version. I then rebooted the phone and everything appeared to be working fine and I was rooted. I could have sworn I had data. I then realized that I didn't have CWM as a recovery so I downloaded and installed CWM recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43294839 It was after rebooting (and maybe a reset I can't remember at this point) that I noticed I had no data.
So I flashed a few other ROMs including VANIR (and the recovery he suggests) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2689519 I and CM 11 plus a stock rom (S7710LUBAMC1_S7710LUUBAMC1_CHO Samsung kies tells me CHO is the region for my device) but didn't have mobile data in any of them.
Still hoping to get mobile data working again I flashed a stock Recovery and A stock Boot.img from here...(Well I can't seem to find the thread now). It was a link to the stock boot.img and stock recovery.img (GT-S7710) from someone wanting a CWM recovery built. I then reflashed the stock ROM from above still no mobile data. My flash count in download mode is up to 26 lol and nothing I have tried restores the mobile data although as long as the phone boots, I do have wifi.
Is there ANYthing else I can try? I would really like to have my mobile data back even if it means I don't get to root.
No data connection
It turned out my no data was caused by not having any APN settings after flashing the custom ROM. I copied the settings from hubbies phone and now data works fine. I can't believe I spent so much time working on this and trying different things when it was something so simple.
First off I've rooted and unlocked international and domestic on the stock firmware.
I've performed a nandroid backup and have flashed back to it twice now.
So, where I am at: I've flashed Triforce 5.4 and had it working just fine. I went in and did a custom restore to restore the data onto my phone everything passed just fine and then I got stuck on the triforce boot screen just after the Galaxy S 4 screen.
I'm thinking there there might be something wrong with my backup? Perhaps the modem firmware or something of that nature but I'm not really sure. Just need a little advice to get rolling again because I'd really rather not have to manually get all the data and contacts back.
Hi all,
Some time ago i asked, and received, some support on these forums on how to properly carry out a nandroid backup... following the sound advice i got, i carried out my backup (using TWRP for the record, with all the options checked), and stored it away for a rainy day... said day came yesterday, when i messed up my system and rendered it instable (i tried to manually delete the dalvik cache directory in order to free up the 2,5GB of space it was taking)... since i knew there was i high chance of this ending in disaster, the last thing i did before the delete was carry out another nandroid, so i could easily return to where i had left off... how wrong i turned out to be
as soon as i the system became instable following my experiment of deleting the d. cache directory, i recovered the latest nandroid (i.e. the one i had made just hours before) and everything seemd to go smoothely until the first reboot... when the following happened:
- first reboot after recovery took ages, much like the first reboot following the flashing of a new rom... not the end of the world, but that was the first sign that all was not well
- the status bar disappeared, and there was no way of making it come back (i.e. nothing to do with the launcher, i typically use apex but i i tried switching to both nova and touchwiz which i also kept up to date but the stats bar was nowhere to be seen)
- even if not having a status bar with all the info on it is acceptable (which of course it isn't, but lets just say), the sytem became completely instable after 5minutes of operation... with each app taking turns to shutting down until i kept getting the message "system UI has closed" over and over, to the point that doing a reboot was challenging since i barely had the time to press on the screen between instances of this bloody error message appearing...
...i did of course try and return to my older nandroid backup, but... lo and behold... exactly same behaviour...
so now i have resorted to formatting the internal memory card and flashing a new rom and basically starting over... just what i hope the nandroid would spare me basically :/
question is: does this sort of error sound familiar to anyone? can someone give me a tip maybe on what i may have done wrong?
any opinion, tips& advice much appreciated
I have the exact same problem. It happens on TW Lollipop ROMs. Haven't found a fix. I'm using Philz Touch Recovery and the old no knox bootloader.
Anyone? I have researched this but cannot find any similar problems reported... it can't just be me and pavelcheto...
Maybe it a recovery fault. Faulty backup or faulty restore.
No problems with my older backups. I restored my KitKat TW backup, working fine. Restoring CM12 backups also works fine. I've looked for a new recovery, Philz is discontinued, CWM hasn't been updated for a year and I really don't like TWRP.
I use TWRP 2.8.3.0 and never have (and hopefully never will) encountered any issues with restoring backups.
Considering i recovered 2 separate backups for a total of 3 times (i tried recovering the first backup twice) i doubt the issue was with the recovery itself... however since pavelcheto had no issues with the kk recovery maybe it could be lollipop related?
Anyone successfully recovered a lollipop nandroid backup?

I recovered my lollipop gpe backup a couple of times without a problem.
Data encryption may cause restoring problems.
I have restored CM12 backups (based on 5.0.2) serveral times, no problem there. I've had issues only with TouchWiz Lollipop ROMs, I have tried different custom roms, all get bugged at restore.

Just to make sure I understand correctly : you mean all TW custom roms you've restored have had problems?
Wonder if anyone else has managed a bug-free restore of a 5.x TW?
Yes, but only on Lollipop. KitKat TW roms restore just fine. I am using Philz Touch Recovery. I have tried 3 different TW Lollipop roms and they all fail to restore properly. No wallpaper, black wallpaper and no status bar. And after a minute or two System UI starts crashing. If then I do factory reset from recovery and the rom starts normally (welcome guide and stuff) and works fine.
bumping this thread because i cant seem to find a solution for this anywhere.

There's no solution for this as per comments above. TW LP is not restorable. You can flash a new lollipop ROM tho'

Alright, I have a Virgin Mobile S4. I rooted it a year ago with towelroot and installed clockwork mod on it to install cyanogenmod. I tried it, didn't like it so I restored my backup of the stock rom using CWM.
Fast forward to now. I tried to update my S4 OTA for Lollipop, but it would give me an error. I figured it was because I had changed the recovery software. So I went and downloaded the virgin mobile lollipop stock rom from sammobile. ( I337MVLUGOC4_I337MOYAGOC4_VMC ).
I tried to flash it onto my S4 using Odin 3.09. To no avail, it always failed at the system4.img.ext or something. From there I tried to make it work by using 3.10. Still failed. I googled for a fix or workaround and found something about reinstalling clockwork mod. I also tried reinstalling the PIT file for I337M. It was still not working. So I tried to flash back to my stock backup.
1st time I flashed, I kept having program that didn't want to start errors. I wiped dalvik, I wiped cache, I factory reset. Still bugged. So as a last resort I restored the backup again after having done all this. It worked! But...
Well, I'm at a lost now, I can't update using OTA, I can't update with Odin, I can't update with Kies. Now what? Is there a way to go back to the stock recovery and let the OTA or Kies update go through unhindered?
BTW, I had a problem when trying to use EFS professional to backup my EFS before the procedure. No matter which port I used ( front port or back motherboard port ), I could never make the backup, it said something about the phone currently being offline or something.
Anyway, I'd prefer to be able to switch back to the stock recovery and let the OTA or Kies do its thing. Any clues?
EDIT UPDATE: After fiddling some more around, I changed usb port again and reflashed using a more up to date version of Odin and I finally have Lollipop on my device, only problem is that I have no 3g or 4g connectivity even tho the IMEI, baseband and SMS as well as calls work just fine, what's wrong?
See first post edit^^

Did you check the APN settings? Make sure you have the right one for your carrier.
Hey everyone. I recently gave my Rogers note 3 to my wife. two days later she said it was acting up, and it kept saying com.android.systemui has stopped. when I booted into CWM I couldnt do a factory reset, and it was also saying it could open a bunch of directories. I was able to use CWM to restore to an earlier restore, but even then I couldnt do a factory reset, and CWM is still saying it cant open the directories.
After talking with another modder, he has suggested that my partitions are messed up. So, if this is the case, what is my best bet? should I use odin to reflash CWM, and then flash the stock rogers rom? She's not a power user and doesnt care for root. she just wants a working phone that has a stylus pen.
I have downloaded the latest CWM .tar, but can someone please help me find the stock rogers rom? rooted or not, i dont care. I just need help as Im helping her recover from major surgery and working 18 hour days right now so im burnt out.
Thanks in advance.

I was able to format the cache from CWM finally. Errors are all gone.
