[RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Recovery for Captivate (FINAL! SAFE!)

First things first, if you flashed a previous version of Clockwork Recovery using Odin, FLASH BACK TO A STOCK KERNEL using this Odin package:

This recovery is *very* safe to use. It does NOT flash your kernel; it is a completely uninvasive recovery method.
How it works: The recovery is packaged as an update.zip that you run from STOCK recovery. The update.zip unpacks Clockwork Recovery onto the ramdisk and restarts recovery. When you reboot, it reverts back to the original, unmodified, stock recovery. So, you will need to keep the recovery on the root of your SD card as an update.zip, and apply the zip every time you want to start Clockwork.
HOWEVER, if you use ROM Manager, all of the recovery installation and management instructions are done for you!
Installation instructions:
Download ROM Manager from the Market.
Flash Recovery.
Choose Captivate as your phone.
Accept the Superuser prompt.
Use ROM Manager to create a Backup.
On the very FIRST boot of Clockwork, you may need to manually select "reinstall packages" if Clockwork does not start. You should only ever have to do this once. It will be automatic from then on.
Watch the backup go!
That's it! This is completely painless and safe! There is no need for Odin anymore to replace the recovery or flash updates!

For us Noobs, can we get more information on where and when to use this?
In reading everything I get some of it, but not all. This is my first hackable android phone, so I am still learning the lingo.
With other phones, I would just Flash a custom ROM or Flash Factory ROM back.
So how do ROM Manager and Clockwork recovery come into play?
Are there any tutorials - not that just give step by step (like above) but explain what is happening in each step or why?

The long and short of it is that you can now flash ROMs and make backups, and restore, without your computer.
The recovery is the tool that lets you do the backups and installations. ROM Manager is a convenient Android front end to the recovery.

After these steps you won't really have to "hack" your phone lol. Root your phone and download Rom Manager from the Android market...then have it flash a recovery (the first selection at the top) choose your device when prompted. Now after that finishes select "reboot into recovery" and as the above post states you may need to select "reinstall packages" (I did). Once that goes through, you'll see your new custom recovery menu. DO A NANDROID BACKUP of your current Rom as soon as you can....then (as long as your current rom isn't messed up, if its stock your fine) from there on out you can play as much as you want with very little risk of bricking your phone. There are others who can explain it better but your stuck with me till they chime in lol. Its a very easy process and nearly foolproof.

Didn't work at first for me.
I installed Rom Manager (premium)
Installed CW recovery
Accepted SU
Tried to backup from within Rom Manager
I got a "Can't find update.zip" message.
When I rebooted and opened Rom Manager again, I got the "Error Occured" message, but it locked up on me and became unresponsive.
I uninstalled Rom Manager, rebooted, then reinstalled. I flashed CW recovery again, rebooted normally, opened rom manager again, and flashed CW recovery again.
After that I was able to use rom manager to reboot into recovery and backup.
Not sure if mine was just a fluke or what, but I figured I would share.

Titanium Backup did that to me also the first time I ran it....I've had quite a few freezes and slowdowns when opening a program for the first time and waiting for SU to kick in.

It should also be noted that when you chose to partition the sdcard via the recovery menu, it partitions the internal sdcard and not the external.
Maybe that can be made an option? I would like to do my nandroid backup to my external card so I have it for safe keeping.
Everything else working as expected, I enabled advanced options and downloaded the superuser package (from Extras) just to test things. Havent experienced any problems other than the sdcard wipe (which wasnt totally unexpected).
If something should happen to your phone (brick, unrecoverable error, etc), how can we reboot into this custom recovery to reflash the nandroid backup? Can we get into it via adb (adb reboot recovery)?

Yeah, having an external SD Nandroid would be a great option. Not just for safekeeping, but for easy transfer in case of hardware loss or replacement.

I just did a reboot into recovery mode (the normal way, not with rom manager) and I had to click "reinstall packages" to get into the ClockworkMod recovery menu. So I'm not sure but I'm guessing (hoping) that its still available if we run into problems later.

Yep. It's pretty much how the Droid and N1 people are used to doing it anyway.
Clockwork is hella handy to manage and switch between working ROMs on the fly, as well as triggering recovery mode without keypress acrobatics, but having update.zip on the SD card to fall back on using the normal restore and the stock kernel is great in case of semi-bricking, and as this last week has shown us, the Galaxy phones are a bit prone to this.

I previously rooted my phone and uninstalled alll the AT&T bloatware, My question is about the backup I just made using this. If I restore the backup will it restore a rooted backup with out all the AT&T bloatware? Also when I ran the backup I go 2 messages at the end

Also I now have 2 ROM Manager icon in my application screens. 1 will open the program and the other tells me that the aplication is not installed on my phone. I tried to delete that icon but it won't go away, Any ideas? FIXED..I rebooted my phone and the extra icon went away...

I do have one in my phone but there is nothing installed on it yet..maybe that's why..

Ok so I am new to this but I rooteds my phone yesterday on my mac the first time I got an error and re did it and it worked but now when i try to add different roms in the recovery screen I see every option but nandroid back up how come it is not there? Do I really need it to download roms? If so how do I get the nandroid on there?

if it's rooted there is no need to reroot, sounds like you have cwm recovery, there should be a backup option, you won't find the word "nandroid" but that's what it is, if there is no "backup" on that screen can you please list what options are available?

im in clockworkmod recovery v2.6.0.1
and there is an option that says back up and restore which falls under install zip from sdcard

It seems as if you are seeing the factory recovery. Do you have root? Restart into bootloader, it should say s-off at the top of the screen. If it does, you got root. If it says s-on, no root. If your not rooted run Unrevoked, at the end of the process you should have a proper recovery. If you have root, dl Rom manager from the market and let that app install cw recovery or ra.

@ mis fit i have the icon for super user and am able to tether so im pretty sure it is rooted but I do not see the nandroid option

yes it says s - off i just checked so now once I open a zip file i thought you had to store it in the nandroid file in the sd card but i dont have a nandroid file

in clockwork it doesn't say nandroid, that's okay, make the backup and your fine

leave it where it puts it, it can only find it there, you can copy it to your computer just in case your sdcard fails

Ok, got it, using the Rom manager app it says "Backup Current ROM" and not android. Click on that and you're good to go.
If you are entering recovery using power and vol down or a power off app like quickboot, you won't see an option for nandroid right away either, its under backup/restore.

Problem using ROM Manager

Recently having a problem using Rom Manager. Have downloaded clockwork recovery.
When using "Reboot into Recovery" or "Backup Current ROM" from ROM Manager it takes me to the green recovery and stops.
If I then go to "Advanced" followed by "Reboot Recovery" I then get the red ClockworkMod Recovery.
If I use the power button (Bionix 1.3.1) and chose "Recovery" it then goes to the proper "Red" recovery.
I have been using ROM Manager for approximately a year to do backups and restores, but not it seems not to be "associated or connected" with the clockworkmod recovery.
Any advice? I recently wiped cache and dalvik. Was this a mistake?
I have uninstalled and re-installed ROM Manager but had the same results afterwards.

If I select backup current rom from ROM Manger it goes to the green recovery. If I then reboot recovery it goes to the red recovery.
Worked fine for probably a year.
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

ROM Manager still not working properly
Thought I would try again.
When I select "Backup current ROM" from ROM Manager my phone goes to the green recovery where I have to scroll through and select backup.
Part of the purpose of ROM manager is that it is a front-end application for CWM, but it is not working as such.
Anyone know anything more about the details of how ROM manager works? I have uninstalled and reinstalled it several times but it doesn't change anything.
Have been using it for almost a year with no problems until recently.

And after the backup is complete it goes back to the green recovery and I have to select reboot system. ROM Manager used to and should do these things automatically.

Well, I guess I will never know what happened but through a "magical" combination of updates and reboots, and who knows, it began working properly again today.

Anyone has a problem with the free version?
I couldn't install it after ODIN.

You can pull a copy of it from my signature. It is an update.zip and in my dropbox so it will always be there when you need it.

can't change TWRP 2.1.1 settings to stop official recovery from reinstalling

I have a Nexus 7, rooted, running stock 4.1.1 rom, and just installed TWRP 2.1.1
I have been reading this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779092 , however I cannot post on the thread due to being a new/low post count member.
I read that, and it does happen, that each time I reboot, the stock recovery reinstalls itself.
I attempted to follow this....
NOTE: The stock ROM may automatically replace TWRP with the stock recovery. To prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP, boot TWRP, go to the mount menu and mount system, press the home button, then press Advanced -> File Manager. Browse to /system and select the file named recovery-from-boot.p then choose to rename the file to recovery-from-boot.bak

but it doesn't seem to work.
Firstly, when I go to the "Mount" menu, there is only 3 entries.....1 large button which says "Mount USB Storage", and 2 boxes which are selected with a cross in the box, "Unmount Data", and "Unmount Cache". If I do press Mount USB Storage I can only Unmount it to return to menu.
So regardless of that part, if I then go to the file manager, and browse to the system folder, the folder shows up empty, and the only thing showing is a Bin subfolder (also empty)
any ideas whats wrong?

Use the one-click root tool. Install TWRP via GooManager. Profit.

yeah I did use the tool, all is rooted fine. If you install TWRP from GooManager, and then press to reset to recovery, TWRP loads fine. Once you reboot again however, the stock roms overwriting the TWRP so it no longer works each time. The steps there were supposedly to stop this from happening, from within TWRP, however the options aren't even there. Sadly, I can't post in the TWRP thread due to having less than 10 posts

How r u booting into recovery? Do u power off then use button combo? I use quickboot from market. Its free and boots u into recovery without having to manually turn off the device. I had the same exact issue u drescribe when attempting to follow op instructions. I couldn't do it so I said what the hell, let me see if I boot into recovery using quickboot it overwrites. I was happy to discover that it didn't.

I booted into recovery directly from the GooManager option which restarts it into it for me. After a reboot though choosing the same option gives the official recovery I presume (android robot with chest open and exclamation mark)....until I tell it to install the OpenRecoveryScript again
I'm not familiar with Quickboot - take it its just a button to press to get it into recovery the same way as the GooManager option of "Reboot Recovery"?
I'm looking at this TeamEOS nightly build at the moment, toying with the idea of whether to stick with stock rom or flash their custom rom over it.....hard call as its still early days for the roms I think, but if spend ages again installing my apps, will have to do it again afresh when do eventually change the rom

Yes quickboot is as u describe. I know what u mean about starting to flash. It's a bit early for me considering conditions of the roms ( early stages). I am getting tempted tho...lol. won't be long I'm sure.

yup....just installed Quick Boot (Reboot),
chose Recovery, and again its rebooting back to the original recovery instead of the TWRP.
Guess I'll have to flash to a custom rom to get around it if want it sorting now....or wait till I have the minimum post count to post on the main TWRP thread
Not end of the world to reinstall apps and games I guess when the custom roms are more mature, so long as I remember to use Titanium Backup to save my games progress

you need to rename the recovery-restore.sh file in /system/etc/ (I forget the name offhand - if you look at the filenames there you'll figure it out). It restores the stock recovery at every reboot unless deleted or renamed. Then flash your 3rd party recovery.

thats the trouble.....I use the file manager in TWRP, and I can't see that file anywhere.
The TWRP page says to go to /system......but when I go there its empty, only one subfolder, /system/bin, which also shows up empty

Unable to backup stock Android ROM

I've tried to create a backup of my current stockrom using apps like rom manager, cwm and team win. Whenever I click on the "backup" tab, it will reboot my phone and it will show the Android icon with its "belly" opened up. Once the phone boots up again, I can't find any trace of the backup file. What am I doing wrong?
I'm using the d802 version if that helps

it sounds like you have lost your recovery?try and reflash twrp or cwm I prefer twrp, with one of the methods on the twrp or cwm section in xda I have used flashify to install before now but once you have recovery you can then reflash them again if not working correctly if it has backed up your stock rom it will show up in apps like rom manager
have you checked in twrp or cwm that you have the necessary files checked before you back up ie mount and then tick all boxes?system,cache,dalvik,data,efs
hope this might help? is your current rom etc showing up in twrp or cwm folders say in es file manager (another good app to manage all your files)
