[Q] Too many SD card files? - Nook Touch General

I'm trying to store a lot of files on an sd card with this nook simple touch glowlight. I have it rooted now, thinking that maybe accessing the files in Android would be the better solution, but it still seems to hang like crazy. With a 16gb card that had about 500 files it was fine, that was almost 3GB worth, then with the 16gb card with around 12,000 files, about 12gb of space, it just seems to hang endlessly as it processes them. I have a faster 32GB card that had over 30,000 files, and the same problem, it hangs forever as it processes them. Any thoughts? I originally just wanted to do this with the stock nook file browser, when that didnt work I rooted and neither is working well for me.

There was a bug with timeouts using Class 10 SD cards.
That bug got patched but I'm not sure which kernel that is.
I gave up on using FAT (vfat) on the SD card.
I use ext3 now.
My old approach was a patched vold that supported ext3.
My new approach is getting rid of vold, vfat and UMS.

ok ill give that a try. I have one class 10 and one class 4 card

formatted the card to ext3 and it didnt see any files on it at all. Starting to lose hope with my plan, I really wanted to be abel to have thousands of files on card and access them from the nook, but it really seems like the nook doesnt have enough power to do that

I haven't counted exactly, but I have about 8000 files on my SD card.
You should format using mke2fs & tune2fs on the Nook.
For experimenting you can manually mount.
You can add my mntsdcard (Linux executable) to mount it automagically.

Transfering ext3 + apps to new SD card

Quick question, I have an 2GB (Non-class 6 SD card) and it was working okay with my G1 phone. I partitioned it with no problem, have apps, themes, roms, basically the whole nine yards on it. I recently just purchased a new 8 gb 6 class SD card and was wondering if Paragon Manager or any other program can transfer the data over flawlessly? I know I have to create a new ext3 part (probably using paragon manager) and then transfer all the data over...but was wondering if anybody else did this before without running into any issues and what was the overall process you took? I appreciate any help. Thank you.
no issues here, done it a couple times. didnt use paragon though. used ext support on my mac to copy all files from both partitions, then format the card using GParted on my Slax USB. then put my files back, inserted into g1 and booted the phone. cyanogens MOD works great with it.

Quick question for you, did your apps still show as installed in the market when you swapped cards? I have been meaning to get my 8GB cards (I have a few with tv episodes on them) set up so I can swap between them and my 16GB at any time, but this question is one that is keeping me from trying yet (that and a lack of time).
Thanks.
insert original card and do not mount it (or unmount it if auto),
dd if=/dev/sdcardfile of=/home/yourusername/tmpsdbackup
swap cards and do not mount it (or unmount it if automatic),
dd if=/home/yourusername/tmpsdbackup of=/dev/sdcardfile
Then run gparted, move your ext partition to the end of the disk and expand your crap32 partition to max.
wait so do i just partion my 8 gig c6 and than copy all files off my other sd card and i should be able to boot up, of course redownload everything or should i not try that
and when i say copy my files ove3r just the ones on my sdcard not all my apps

I used Partition Manager to partition my 8g Sd card into a Ext3 partition. What I did was just wipe, reflash my ROM (Cyanogen's 3.4) and reinstalled all the apps from the Market. It seems like it would take forever, but it really didn't.
The reason why I reflashed was because when I changed SD cards originally, it stopped reading all the original files from the original SD. All-in-all, it was very easy to just: Wipe, Reflash the ROM, then reinstall apps from Market, which should still be listed under Downloads.
how do you format an ext3 partion

[Q] Busted Micro SD?

Hi Chaps
Got probs with my 16gb class 4 micro sd card.
Bought an htc hd2 off ebay last week which came with the above card and winmo 6.5.
I wanted to test out WM7 which I did, didn't enjoy it so tried to get Android working.
Now I came across the 199mb problem which I fixed no probs but now the sd card will just not play ball in CWM. It says it makes the partitions but this is instant and should take a few minutes being a 16GB sd card. When I come to mount the thing it just error's and says cannot mount sd card.
I've tried doing a full erase using the samsung sd tool and that took over 3 hours to complete which is strange. I've also used the tool to create partitions which it does without any problems.
If I put the SD card in my fiancee's HTC Desire and mount and format it it works fine but when I come to mount it on my hd2 it still can't mount it.
I also have a 4GB micro sd card which is class 2 and this works perfectly with CWM both with partitioning and mounting.
I'm on the verge of snapping this card in half and buying a new one so before I do I thought I'd ask on here for any advice.
Many Thanks
Use Panasonic SD Formatter and format using that. Should work then. No even need for a full erase, but if you want you can, but not needed. It should recover the rest of the SD card.

Cheers for that, done a quick format and it finished but now windows won't read it. Just comes up with the message disk is not formatted do you want to format it now.
Is this normal?
No problem. Erm well I've formatted my 8GB class 8 using that and I've never encountered that problem. When your formatted did it come up that it was restored to 14/15GB? You might aswell go ahead and format it.

Duh me, I had to remove it from the laptop and back in for windows to pick it up.
Just tried mounting the sd as USB storage and I get the following error
"E:Unable to write to ums lunfile (No such file or directory)"
Trying to mount the sd card I get this error:
"E:failed to mount /sdcard (No such file or directory) Error mounting /sdcard!"
As soon as I put my 4bg sd card in and try to mount it it works straight away
That's very odd. I don't know very much about SD cards/memory so I wouldn't know what's wrong with that.
I think you're best off getting a new card as I think that ones maybe worn out.
I recommend you don't use ebay for sd cards, they can easily be poor copies, just buy them from a recognised store, Amazon or Play
Cheers for the help guys. Think I'll just stick it in the digital camera as that seems to work fine and buy a new one from amazon or play.
yeah.. dont ever buy memory cards from ebay...
i tried buying one 32gb microsd before..
my comp doesnt even detect it..

[Q] exFAT external sd card problem...

I have the strangest feeling this has already been answered somewhere...but i've scoured the internet and havent found much of anything on the topic. I've read some mixed statements saying ppls sgs4 see's an external sd card formatted as exFAT, others say it isnt working for them. I've figured out a way to get the hardfloat Kali Linux ARM gui terminal working and all applications installed running in a chrooted environment...however the image size needs to be a minimum of 6gb to install all programs. I'd like to go with 8gb just to give it a little play. I have an SGH-I337 (AT&T) and am rooted, i've tried stock rom w/ stock kernel, stock rom w/ KTweaker kernel, said it supports exFAT but did not work. Also i've tried Cyanogenmod 10.1, but havent tried the KTweaker kernel w/ cyanogenmod yet. After formatting the 16gb microsd i have to exFAT and inserting it into the phone it states "Preparing SD Card"...and immediately says "SD Card is safe to remove". Anybody have any insight as to how i can get around this 4gb filesize limitation? Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Here's the deal.
All cards 32gb or less (SDHC cards) come formatted in Fat32.(Part of SDHC spec) This includes a file limit of 4gb max for a single file.
All cards 64gb or more (SDXC cards which the S4 supports) come preformatted in exFat (Part of SDXC spec). This does not have a 4gb file limitation.
The stock Samsung / AT&T Firmware supports exFat. (I bought a 64gb SDXD formatted with exFat and plugged it in and worked right away). Most recoveries do to. (TWRP does at least).
However, I flashed CM10.1 onto my S4. CM10.1 does _NOT_ support exFat. Initially I backed up and reformatted my card in Fat32. Angry with the 4gb file limitation (I have many 720p and 1080p movies over 4gb..) I actually took the microSD card out, used a adapter and hooked it up to a Linux system (Ubuntu 13.04 in my case) and used gParted to format the card to EXT4 filesystem. EXT4 is a filesystem most Linux machines use and support natively. This is actually the filesystem most newer Android device use for their internal SDCard / Data partitions! I popped the card back in, CM10.1 reads it perfectly! And I was able to copy files over 4gb to the device!
So its not a hardware thing since the S4 is SDXC compatible. Just formatting / partition time issue.
I greatly appreciate the breakdown! However i do have a question, since the sgs4 supports exFAT, why does it not see it after i reformat my 16gb to exFAT? Is it because it is an SDHC and not an SDXC? Also, does the type of recovery you have installed alter what filesystem types are recognized?

No problem!
As far as the spec goes, if it's formated in exFatand its SDHC it should still read it fine. Filesystem is just a filesystem. The spec just says what is used by default on cards.
One possible issue though, did you format your card in your phone? Sometimes the odd way these work the SD cards like to be formatted in the phones themselves. It worked formatting from a Computer for my ext4 case, however that does not work for all cards/phones/filesystems sometimes.

I've tried formatting from phone, 3 different computers (one computer running Debian), cfdisk command line as well as gparted, also window's format utility. It seems though nothing is working however after going to Cyanogenmod 10.1 last night and formatting the external to ext4 the phone only displayed "Reading SD Card" then "SD Card is blank". It works perfectly fine whenever the phone formats it, it just doesnt like any other type of filesystem. It is a polariod sd card which gave me issues in the past. Hopefully i can get this resolved and post more on it. Probably just something small i'm missing :/
Anyways, thanks a million on the input!

As far as I know there aren't and posts saying it supports it but I've used TWRP with exFAT, Ext4, and FAT32 formatted ROMS.
roms not reading 64gb sandisk sdcard
I have the 64gb sandisk ultra class 10 sdcard... and it flat out works in stock... even when I recover. But doesnt work atall using wicked rom and a couple others. ExFat is the reason... those roms dont support it...
You can use this kernel to get exFAT support on custom ROMs such as Cyanogenmod:

SD Card...

I have had a 64Gb sd card from the beginning with my Note 3 but for some strange reason now it says it's only a 64Mb card and won't let me save anymore to it. I tried to clean it up and copy all to my laptop but it wouldn't let me copy the twrp.img file. I was going to re-format it on my laptop but didn't because it only offered me a 15Mb formatting. Anyone else have issues with their SD Card? Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks,
GoNavyMike
Native Windows formatting seems to be fussy when it finds pre-existing formatting information on SD cards especially if they are not recognized as having a Windows heritage; in many of those cases it will simply honor the information it finds, offering to format only the first partition rather than re-writing the partition table.
If I have a SDcard which has previously been partitioned, has a non-Windows MBR on it, or any strange partition ID values, I typically will write zeros to the beginning of the raw device before letting windows take a whack at formatting it.
e.g. in Linux/Unix (in a root shell)
# dd bs=512 count=16384 if=/dev/zero of=your-raw-device-name
You need to be extremely careful verifying the raw device name is really and truly the SD card and not (say) your primary boot media. You don't want to write zeros to your boot media!
For example, after plugging in an SD Card to a Linux machine (or transferring control of the USB device to a Linux guest Virtual Machine), I will usually do something like:
# dmesg | tail -20
to find out that the recently attached raw devices is /dev/sdc or /dev/hdb or similar.
On your phone, the SD Card raw device is probably /dev/block/mmcblk1 (note "1", NOT ZERO) BE CAREFUL!
It goes without saying that you should back up whatever you want saved off your SD card to begin with.
Now, in terms of *why* this happened, that's a bit of a mystery. Did you use this card with the "samsung_unlock_n3" method? If so, that would have written a more advanced partitioning format onto the card called "UEFI GPT". There is still a MBR in this case, but it is called a "protective MBR" as it has information in it that would prevent primitive OSes ( like Windows, ) from smashing the GPT table that follows.
But even that would have put information on the card that indicated a total size of 32GB, not 64 MB.
If you want to figure out what happened, you can look at the SD card (raw device) under linux using "fdisk" - if you see a partition type such as 'ee' (EFI GPT), then somehow a GPT partition table got written to the device. If that is the case, using a more modern tool that knows about GPT is necessary. Something like (Linux) "parted" or "gparted".
All of these sorts of things can in principle be accomplished under windows, but mostly by finding 3rd party utility programs . The open source GParted project uses a bootable mini-linux distro to do this.
good luck

Almost the exact thing happened to me. My 32gb card registered as 59mb. I believe this happened when unlocking the boot loader or letting my first run of TWRP do as it asked. The solution for me was to reformat the sd card from my vzw note 2. I lost all my previously stored contents, but reclaimed my sd card's storage. I only hope your solution is as simple. Good luck. (edit: meant to type VZW Note 3)

I have the same problem. In the last 2 weeks I have lost 2 sd cards. Without using them, I get a pop up saying DAMAGED SD CARD. Reformat and lost all data. I have not had this problem before but started after I unlocked the the boot loader.
Wonder if those unlock files are active in the root directory.

Micro SD card wont be mounted by Samsung Tab a6

So I have a Samsung Tab a6 7 T280 wifi and I've inserted a MicroSD card (128GB). I've done this with the stock os first and I just got the message card can be removed safely. and it wouldn't let me mount it.
Now I've installed the Tinker V5.1 Stock Rom over it and it still happens. (wanted a faster os on it).
I can reformat the card with twrp to be ext4 or exFAT and it doesn't change a single thing. if I insert the sd card I get a quick preparing card and then instantly the message card can be safely removed. clicking on mount sd card in storage from settings doesn't do anything except prompt same message.
I'd try a different sdcard.
Okay, so I hope I can help, I have the SM-T280, I do not use Tinker ROM, instead I debloated my stock ROM and use an SPA kernel by @_mone. If you're trying to extend storage to your tablet, you'll need to use a PC to partition the SD card two PRIMARY partitions. I used on Windows MiniTool Partition Wizard (free), and I used a FAT32 partition and an ext2 partition. With the stock ROM/kernel I had problems using ext4 or extFAT which didn't make sense to me but it is what it is, and I used the app Apps2SD to handle all the work.
The main thing, you need to make sure your SD card has TWO (2) PRIMARY partitions.
Good luck.

FAT32 is not for large capacity storage. Use exFat. There isn't much point in having such a large ext2 partition. It's incompatible with media transfer protocols unless you use a Linux system.
This device fully supports exFAT. I use a 64gb sdcard no issues.

I wouldn't think so, I'm sure it supports 128gb cards.
Just partition it into to halves. First partition exfat. Leave the other unformatted and see what happens.

partitioned into a 40 GB exFAT partition and left rest unpartitioned. Didn't change anything. if I pop it in the tablet I get a short preparing sd card notification then immediately an SD card safe to remove notification...
I'm really confused by this. The tablet is new so I doubt that it's broken but I don't know. Do you know if there's a way to check any kind of logs on Android like dmesg on Linux as an example to see what happens with the sd card?

According to Samsung, the T280 will support a 256gb SD card BUT I know from experience that SD cards over 32gb can be VERY touchy. If you use a PC to remove all of the partition and then let the tablet try to do its own formatting and it still doesn't work, I'd say you have an incompatible SD card. That doesn't mean the card is bad but that it just won't work in the T280.
As an example, a Samsung EVO+ card (which can be found on eBay for $30) will probably work while a "no name" card from China, probably won't.
