Need help with bloat removal - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On AT&T with root. For some odd reason I can't remove the Att system apps. Tried root Explorer and some of the system removal apps on play. Any ideas? I hate knowing the bloat is there and wanting updates every few days.

There're several ways that I know.
1/ Use ES File Explorer and make sure you enable the root explorer option and try to uninstall it using the app manager option.
2/ Go to the root folder of the phone using a root explorer, then go to system -> app and delete the bloatwares you want.
3/ Use Titaninum Backup
4/ Just freeze it with default android settings. It wont run again or take up resources, and will disappear from the app drawer.

Remove/Disable unwanted applications/running services

I installed JM6 (the 'old' way) and my phone is Rooted via SuperOneClick.
How can I remove standard installed applications (eg. Ereader, Calculator etc) and how can I see which applications/services are running and how can I remove unwanted services running in the background?
Get Root explorer from the market. Can delete apps with it but be careful you dont delete anything you shouldnt.

Can you tell me how Root Explorer works? (how to delete apps/services, how to see which are running)
You delete apps from Data/apps or system/apps. Most apps are named so youll recognise them. Delete the .odex and .apk

And where do I find which services/application are running (after booting) and where do I disable/enable them?
DO NOT DELETE ! (move to internal or external SD card, just in case you need to restore)

I'm a recent convert to Titanium Backup. In the pro version you can "freeze" processes. I'm not exactly sure, but what I think it does is close the process and copy the app to a cache folder.it's no longer running and it doesn't show up in the launcher. All you have to do is unfreeze it to bring it back.
How has Titanium Backup performed for you? Have you noticed any adverse affects from its use? I am looking to lock down the Galaxay tablet for use in one of our departments. Titanium Backup seems to be the way to go. I assume you need to root the device in order to use it?

Second that. Leave them where they are and just rename the apk to apkx.
When you reboot they will be gone, but can be easliy restored by removing the 'x'
Be warned though, if you remove the wrong app's you can get stuck in all sorts of 'force close hell'
Not then end of the world though and is a safer method of playing with your android devices.
Root explorer and ADB are your friends
I've found Titanium Backup does the trick using the freeze option. Very handy should you want to get an app back again. As said, be very careful deleting something, or at least make a copy on your sdcard just in case .
Oh and make sure USB Development is ticked just in case the only way back in is via an adb shell!

Uninstalling bloat-ware on stock Dell froyo

Apologies, but as a newb I need a little walk-thru on uninstalling bloat-ware. I have unlocked Dell stock froyo which is rooted.
When I try to uninstall bloat-ware apps I get the "uninstall unsuccessful" message. If I go to settings>>manage applications, the uninstall button is dimmed.
I have read that since I am rooted that I can uninstall, but don't know how.
Thanks in advance.
you will need an app like titanium backup witch let you unninstall system app.
search on market and you will find.
i remove system apps from my streak using titanium backup!
good luck!
Or root explorer
Is one better than the other? Pros and Cons?

Titanium Backup is more of a GUI interface and offers a list of apps that you can tap on or long press on for options. TB (paid version) also has a 'freeze' option. This makes the app invisible to the user, but the app can be easily restored. TB Web Site
Root Explorer is a file explorer similar to Astro or ES File Explorer, but with root permissions. It makes granting write permissions on a folder very easy.
Thanks for all the help. Am using Titanium Backup with good success.

Sprint Bloatware removal?

OK!!!! So now that we have Gingerbread, I am wondering if there is anyway that we can remove the bloatware without having to flash an entire ROM??? I am not interested in freezing them, but instead complete removal to have the free space.
Any suggestions?
I used ES File Explorer which is free. Go into it's settings, and there should be an option to turn on Root Explorer and to Mount File System. Then just tap the favorites star, select phone, then browse to system/app and delete the apk and odex files for the bloat.
The root explorer function seems a bit buggy on ES, only would activate once. If I unactivated and try to reactivate says test fail. Works again after rebooting the phone though. The nice thing about ES is it shows the icons for the apks so you know exactly what you are deleting as some of the names aren't real descriptive.
I used Titanium Backup to remove Sprint Bloatware. Open TB > Backup / Restore > Select App > Uninstall.
Just delete them in 7zip/winrar. System/apps
Yeah, with the ES File Explorer, I notice that if I set the root option and leave the application, when I go back in...it only show one phantom folder. I have to go in to settings, uncheck it...exit the app...then go back in and recheck it. Other than that 'bug', it works fine.
So i have the paid root explorer, and I go to system, app, then i mount r/w but where are these bloat apps? i can't seem to find asphalt or any other ones? are they hidden under different names?
I would like to delete;
ashpalt
telenav
nascar
free hd game(?)
do I need all share?
qik video
sprint tv
Personally, I use the SDX Stock App removal app.
Simple and easy to use. You can back up any app and you can also use it to restore.
I'm sure root explorer is just as good though but I stick to what I know

[Q] What does root give me and how do I use it

This is my first time rooting a phone and I’m trying to understand what power I exactly have now. I equate having root access to having admin access to a Windows PC. Is this correct?
I successfully gained root access via towelroot and confirmed with root checker. My goal is to stop Motorola from bugging me to upgrade to 183.46.15. When I use ES File Explorer to navigate to system/priv-app and attempt to delete 3c_ota.apk I get an error that I can’t delete it. I can rename it, but that does not remove the notification that I have a system update ready to install. I believe this is because the OTA service is still running. I also renamed the .odex file and that didn’t help either.
So, I was under the assumption that with root access I could just uninstall any app I wanted, especially pre-installed crap-ware by Moto and Verizon. Or at the least navigate to these .apk filed and delete them.
Please help me understand what root access gives me and how I can use it to do what I want to this phone.

UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER.
The OTA most likely downloaded and is being stored in your cache directory(?). You need to delete it.

Yes, I'm planning on unlocking the bootloader but at this point I really just want it to stop telling me that I have a system update to install. Are you saying that if I find the OTA and delete it I will be free of this notification?
Also, I want to be able to go through the list of installed apps and uninstall at will. Why can't I do that if I have root?

Yes, if the OTA has downloaded on your device, you will need to either delete it or install it to stop the pop-ups.

Are you using a root explorer with superuser rights?
I second ATTACK. You will need to disable the updater (blur_update or something similar but there's no mistaking when you load up Titanium Backup, they occasionally show the information - any debloaters will take care of it if you know how to use it.) and delete update.zip in /cache as recent .15 is a point of no return. Then to unlock the bootloader, grab Motopocalypse APK.
In short, about "Superuser", it means you have the complete permission to do whatever you want after rooting. Just be careful, as power comes with responsibility.

By a "root explorer", you mean like ES File Manager where I can navigate through system directories? Then yes. However, I do not know how to use it with superuser rights.
Touch Tools in ES file explorer, then Root Explorer and grant the permission once Superuser toast appears. And you will want to touch "Show hidden files". Then look around in /cache, now that the Superuser permission is granted to ES file explorer. Android OS typically hide some files if you're not rooted.

Ok I got it figured out. I navigated to the cache directory and renamed the OTA with a .BAK extension. Problem solved. Here's a question now that I've gone through the process. Is a program like SuperSU required to prompt the "Superuser toast"?
Also, if I want to uninstall pre-installed apps like Audible, how would I do so? I can certainly delete the APK, but does that actually remove all other associated files? I know in Windows it's good to go through the actual uninstall process so that all associated files and registry entries are removed as well.

Navigate to the /system partition > /app & /priv-app folders and either delete or rename(.bak) the app/s you would like to "uninstall" then reboot.
Fantastic! Many thanks to you both. I accomplished my goals and learned a lot in the process.
You're welcome. Also, Superuser toast is there for security reason; if the suspicious program tries to access the su binary, you would catch the suspicious app in its track and permanently deny it of the permission. That's the beauty of Superuser app - you get to choose which app to be allowed to use the superuser permission.

[MOD] Remove unnecessary built-in APKS

Hello friends this is my first contribution to this forum, this file removes unnecessary built-in apks present in, /system/app & /system/priv-app.
I will miss the applications removed?
No, because a current copy of them is running on /data/app
Goal
Remove unused applications by the system
Free up space in the device memory
Compatibility
Nexus 5 android 6.0.1 must have root and twrp
How to use
Installed the android 6.0.1, get in playstore and update all applications, now just flash the zip via TWRP.

This is a system partition
The deletion is useless because you can't use this space and you won't appreciate any differences
Read here, it is very very important
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64208563&postcount=3393
Personally I prefer to disable unnecessary apps
Pay attention
I do not like duplicate files, disabling an app the same will continue in the system, the idea is to not disable an app.
If I have the upgraded chrome in data\app I will not want an unusable copy of it on \system\app. My list does so with 30 Apps, if they are all updated on DATA I see no utility in maintaining obsolete unusable in the SYSTEM, and we still have the possibility to uninstall those we dislike.

If you read that post he clearly says that to modify system you need to delete things from it to be safe. He is pointing out that it is an unknown. He said even to make small changes you would need more space. I see no reason to leave unneeded files in system. Maybe you want to run an app as system app and these unneeded files are getting in the way. Nothing wrong with getting rid of them.
We can use some root enabled file app managers (like es explorer, solid explorer) to uninstall the system apps.
I just want to know if is it safe or not?
And is it different than using flashable script?

File explorers with root function can enable manual removal of system apps, but it is laborious and tedious remove as many apps, It is safe if you know what you are removing, because the system is running if you give problem can fall into a bootloop... my flash file is safe removal of 30 apps, all with updated copies of the same in DATA folder so I ask you to enter the play store and update it before you use it, nothing is lost only copies obsolete and useless are removed.
The advantage here is not to miss anything, remove enough waste Rom, and return the power to uninstall what you do not want. I do not use play books, play movies, keep, Drive, Hangouts... so without losing any, then after the flash zip i have the freedom to uninstall what I want.
