Boost signal strength? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have the vs980 version and for some reason despite Verizon's "amazing service" I find I get a crap ton of failed sent text messages. I live on long island and should have 4g coverage almost everywhere but find I get less than 3g a lot of the time. Is there anything I could do to boost signal strength.
I see custom Roms say they can improve signal. How do they go about doing this?

I am also on LI and I travel throughout the Island all day each day and outside of a few towns I always see a solid 4G signal. In about what area are you having issues and only getting a 3G signal. The issue maybe the phone and not the Rom.

Pretty much anywhere to be honest. Think I should take the phone into verizon and see about it? I am usually in Brookhaven and get crap service.

Also for another reference. This is old but still useful. This is normal service strength for me.

Different kernels do signal boosting job after root...
But first try factory rest...
If problem resist and u are out of warranty..
Then try using dorimanx's kernel stock...
Do some research on kernels first...
Hope it helps.....

Did you get a new sim card with phone or just transfer your old one? I ask because I tried to use my old one when I upgraded and it did not go so well... Constant dropped 4g and bad battery drain. Switched to a new Sim card and it was like I got a new phone. No 4g drops since. I know it seems like a simple thing but it really made a bug difference for me.

The phone came pre installed with a new Sim. Think I should try and get another new one?
Sent from my VS980 4G using xda app-developers app

It wouldn't hurt. If you tell your provider you think it's faulty they will normally just give you a new one. If not they are only a couple dollars I think...

3g signal slower than slow

Anyone else getting slower than slow 3g signal in areas hit by hurricane Irene?

unbearably slooooowwwww... also phone keeps losing signal for service (3g and phone)
Absolutely. I'm in DC, I typically get full bars where I live, now I'm getting 1-1x.

You know, my HTC hero still to this day has the best 3g performance. Hits over 2mb a sec. So its our phones, not the network.

Be grateful for what you do have. At least you have some signal and the phone still makes calls.
During Katrina, only SMS & Nextel direct connect worked... sporadically. Calling in & out of the 504 area code was impossible. Once I was able to get to Atlanta, I was able to make calls again; though receiving calls was very hit or miss.
Well it is more or less a couple days after a hurricane....
They probably had some towers or main lines go down/knocked out

Well I did suspect that this would happen. I didn't expect for this to happen.
Verizon and ATT are fine in my area. Tmobile and Sprint seem to be the ones suffering (of course they are both the cheapest). Get what you pay for I guess.

Ditto.
For about a month or so it's been painfully slow here in southern CO too.
So bad that I can hardly use it.
I have been getting 100 kbps down and 200 kbps up here where I live. When I did a side by side test with a friend with a Verizon phone he was getting 1.3 mbps down and 400 kbps up. This is in central California.
Its been days now. Speed and signal has improved but still getting .03mbps downloads.
Sprint has me for another 10months =[.

Lol, that's blazing? I'm trying out the sg3 on Verizon after being an att customer for 10 years, currently with the sgs2. I'm amazed at how slow the network is when not on lte. Itsonly slightly faster than edge. Hopefully it's just a bad area. Lte download was fast, but not uploads.
Will see how it is for the next 2 weeks.

I almost feel spoiled here in Miami. Those speeds are slow compared to the HSPA+ we have down here. Easily pull down 5-7Mb/ps.
Edit: to answer your question, though, it could be that AT&T is just upgrading their 3G (HSDPA<HSUPA<HSPA+; all 3G technologies) in your area. I assume 3G is better the closer you get to a large city and they're just rolling their network outwards and they've reached you.
Getting 20+ on HSPA+ here in Boynton.
I never get over 1 meg on 4g here in Colorado Springs with tmo. Ugh.

In Aurora CO and did these test out of curiosity. Sprint might be stepping up their game, because these are the best 3G speeds I've ever gotten. I know still pretty lame comepard to HSPA+, but nonetheless good enough for me.

Post your speed results

Just interested in seeing some peoples speed results with specific carrier. I have Sprint, and I must say that speeds are suuuuper slow where I live. I just want to show people what a general good range of speeds are for carriers.
So I'll ask if you can post your speed test results, what carrier you have, along with City and state. Oh, and 4G or 3G.
Mine is from Riverside, CA (Sprint/3G)

But this testing I think depends (to get a real measure) of the area with good signal. That will give us a better results to compare it.
Strange that I'm located in okc but speed results prove best out of Kansas. Any thoughts? Also speed test says I'm closer to that location then I am to okc when I can see okc with my naked eye. Lol

[Q] Battery drain.

I take the bus everyday for 45min going and coming from work.
I have 4g most of the time and about 7-10min I'm locked onto 2g/edge
Now question is how much would my battery drain from the ups and downs of signal?
And BTW I use Google music sometimes. And ALL the time I'm either here looking thru XDA or using the browser.
GPS And locations are off as well.
Thanks!

That question can't be answered, it all depends on too much.
45 minutes with screen on in a bad signal area and on 4g? 15% or so? Impossible to guess.
Yea it was to hard for me to figure out. Thought I might ask here. Well I just got off the bus and my phones at 65% after 1hr screen on.

Are you not getting constant 4G? Typically manufacturers like to display an optimistic view of signal where AOSP doesn't. Else try a new sim.
