[Q] Tasker & GV Settings issue - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I've been using Tasker for a few months now and love it. I went ahead and purchased the GV Settings plugin to work with my Google Voice account, but I can't seem to get it to work. When I try to configure the task, I'll go into the GV Settings plugin, make my changes, then hit save and Tasker just goes back to the task, but there's no GV Settings item. It's almost like GV Settings just crashes before it creates the task item. I have noticed that in my notification bar, I'll get the Tasker icon and "Active" but thats it. I can't configure GV Settings at all. I've tried emailing the dev, but no reply yet. I'm on a Sprint Galaxy S4. Nova launcher. Not rooted. Pretty stock setup.
Any ideas from the hive mind?
Thanks.

Uninstall / Fix Google Voice?

Ok so when i first got my N1 i remember seeing GV on the market, it didn't come stock. I downloaded it and while doing the setup you can decide to use it as your voicemail or not, i decided not to use it. No problems, still got my voicemail normally.
So i flashed cyanogen 5.0.4.1 the other day and now i notice that whenever i get voicemail it comes through google voice, i don't like this because now i can't use the t-mobile visual voicemail app i have. When i check for voicemail on that app now i get nothing, they're only on GV.
I've gone to Settings > Call Settings > Voicemail Service and checked the bubble for "My Carrier" thinking that would work, well, it didn't. I checked if i could disable it in the GV settings too and there's no option for it.
I've even gone to the marketplace to try and uninstall it but the uninstall option is greyed out, im guessing because GV comes stock now and is not a removable app.
Can anyone shed some light on how i can either get my normal voicemail working again or get rid of GV altogether?
Much appreciated
tl;dr version: i dont want google voice being my default voicemail, tried to disable it, didnt work, cant uninstall it. I want to get the old normal notifications for voicemail. Help please
Sorry for the double post, figured it out.
In case anyone else is having this problem, go to:
Settings > Call Settings > Call Forwarding
and click disable for:
"Forward when busy"
"Forward when unanswered"
"Forward when unreachable".
For some reason they will all have your google voice number enabled and when you click disable on them individually they revert to your carrier's voicemail number.

[Q] Make Google Voice the default text application

I use Google Voice for everything. I was able to swap out my default voicemail to utilize GV, but I can't seem to do it for the default text/messaging application.
When I left swipe or click on a contact and click message I want it to pull up the GV text vs the native text application.
Right now if I ever want to text, I have to open up the GV app first.
Thanks.
Have you tried clearing defaults? I have GV as my main SMS source and it works great. It asked me which to pick when I first installed it and of course you won't get that message again if you've picked a default after installing GV

Uninstalled and reinstalled and I did get this option upon first use. I must have accidentally selected messaging the first time around. Thanks! This is exactly what I was hoping for!
if it happens with another app just know that you can go to settings >applications then go to the current default app (for whatever it might be), and select clear defaults

I figured that one out too late. Definitely helpful for next time

When you go into your contacts and look under history do you see your GV text messages in there?
The only ones I see in there are the native text app and not the GV texts.

[Q] Deleting stock voicemail?

I've done a search on this, but it always seems to go unanswered:
I use Google Voice as my voicemail exclusively, so can I safely delete my Sprint visual voicemail? It's always running in the background, seems kind of useless.
If you have Titanium you can try freezing it, and if you run into any issues you can just unfreeze it. Kind of way to do your own testing. I usually freeze something for about a week, and if I don't see any bugs, I go ahead and delete it.

how did you manage to get google voicemail setup on the epic? normally it makes you go into the settings and change the provider on android but the epic has its own settings for voicemail...
I can't figure out how to set it up with google voice
Try doing it from your pc. The web site gives you a code to dial that will swap you over.

Yeah you can delete it. I use Google Voice as my voicemail as well, and I delete stock voicemail on every ROM I install. The file is cm-android.apk or something like that. Hope that helps!
@OP:
If you're rooted, just go to system/apps and delete/rename/move the .apk. Root Explorer is good for this.
Or, you can use Autostarts to keep the VM app from running/starting. Again, root is needed.
@Zenoran (and others interested):
It's a subscriber dialer code that changes the "foward if no answer" function. That is how vm is achieved. The menu you refer is simply a shortcut that dials the appropriate number. The GV website can give you the same information (as described by Geekybiker).
I set two entries in my phone book that allows me to easily flip between GV and Sprint VM.
In essence, there are the codes you use from dial pad (press send like you're calling someone):
Activate GV: *28xxxxxxxxxx (x=10-digit GV phone number, no dashes or spaces)
Deactivate GV: *38
Cheers.

Ya I tried dialing this code and it beeps a few times but it still doesn't answer voicemail through google voice it uses sprint's.
Try going online and making sure your mobile number is setup in your gv settings. From a pc. I used gv on a dumb phone and had to setup this way.

[GUIDE] How to get "classic" google visual vm back after sprint integration

Ok so I orginally thought the idea of GV integration with sprint was awesome...after fiddling with it. I was very disappointed.
The problems I had with it were...I dont want to use my GV number as my primary. I dont want to change my GV number to my cell number. Each option had issues that I felt needed to be addressed. Changing my GV number to my cell made it to where txt would be comming into my phone via gv app. Yes there is a work around but ita annoying and I dont want my text stored on line. I also didnt want to change my gv number, this to me sounds like it could be a bad idea at some point in time, and cause other issues. So I set out how to get classic google voice back with the new app that will not let you just use it for vm heres how i did it, now I know this affects the Nexus S 4G with the version of GV they include...however the market version does seem to be different.
Option 1 (For Rooted Phones)
1) Use Titanium backup or some other root explorer to delete the stock voice apk, then reboot recovery and wipe dalvik
2) Once back inside the rom download voice from the market as that version doesnt seem to suffer from the ****ty options that are stock on the phone
Option 2 (The proper way for rooted and non rooted phones)
1) Launch GV app on phone, and sign in, when it ask choose to change your gv number to your cell number.
2) Get annoyed and go get a shot of vodka, and wait about 15 minutes (honestly because you wont be able to change it back for at least 15 minutes.)
3) Login to gv on the web (voice.google.com)
4) once in there click the gear, and pick voice settings. Under the phone area choose to disable the sprint port number (your google voice number). It will disable and revert back to your old gv number
5) Where you mobile number is at you should see enable google voice mail for this line. Click that, and follow the instructions.
6) Click on voice mail and text uncheck email message and send sms.
7) on your phone open gv, goto more then settings make sure it says. Making calls do not use gv to make calls. make sure this phones number is your actual mobile number adjust sync options as you wish and make sure My gv number is indeed your gv number.
8) DO NOT SIGN OUT OF THE APP (Im not sure what will happen but my guess is it will break)
9) Edit your voice mail settings under call settings and change your vm settings to GV from "My Carrier" and make sure your GV number is in there.
Options: Now if you dont want to use the gv app at all you can have gv send you an sms or an email instead or manually check your voice mail by phone.
Enjoy
I kinda did this a different way but not as elegant. I used root manager to remove google voice. I might have used root manager to remove the data too but I can't recall. I rebooted. Then I tried downloading google voice again. I think it installed. I tried running it and there was a problem. I uninstalled it. Then installed it again. That must have flushed out all the references to the program that I missed. Ran the program, signed in, chose let me choose to use google voice for every call. Then I clicked the link for conditional call forwarding and hit send. It's *28(google voice number with area code) then send. After that I hit back until I got back to the gv setup. I chose skip then next then I think I was done. It's working now the old way. Separate numbers and google voice for voicemail.

Can you explain what this workaround is? I'm not too thrilled with how the GV app handles SMS either.
The most annoying thing about this is the app options seems useless for configuration purposes. You really have to configure this through the web to work right.
After I first set it up and tested a voice mail I got
An email, an MMS, and a notification bar alert from GVM app itself even though in the app I had the first two disabled.. Finally got it down to just a notification bar alert from the GVM app only after configuring through the web. It's stupid that by default it lets you know THREE different ways you have a damn voice mail.
I love it!
My texts come to my phone just as they are supposed to and since I turned off notifications in GV app I don't get notifications in the app. I get emails and texts telling me of voice messages just like before. Yes the app still receives text messages and stores them online, but I see this as a plus since txt is mainly how I communicate and my job has me working in a lot of places with internet access but no cell coverage. win win in my book.
To get texts sent to your phone you have to check the little box in your settings that says "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)"
It took me a while to messing around to get everything set up, but I'm liking it now.
I use option 2 (GV number in place of cell number). It works flawlessly. I have had no issues. For me this was easy because I made people use my GV # as my primary number years ago. It just takes a little time an patience getting all your friends and family to use the GV #, but once its done its the best move you'll ever make.

It doesn't have to handle sms. Check that little checkbox and the sms will be delivered to your phone like they were before. Then go into GV app and turn off notifications.
Nice guide. Well since my Nexus is stock and I couldn't stand how broken gv and sprint are together I wanted it to go back to go it was.
That is to say, texts and voicemails come through notifications by the Google voice app and texts sent to my mobile number come through the default messaging app. That's how its supposed to be.
It's quite easy to do, in settings for Google voice in your phone turn off all notifications and inbox synchronization. Basically nothing should be checked. Then in the web go to your Google voice settings and under phones next to your mobile number click on "disable Google voice on your sprint phone".
That should make everything normal again. Hope that helps. I don't see the point of what sprint and Google were trying to do here. The Google voice app works just fine the way it is. Don't mess with a good thing.

I think the folks asking, like myself, are looking for slightly more detail.
After rooting around for the setting mentioned I found it.
1. Log in to Google Voice online
2. Click on the little gear in the upper right hand corner to access Options
3. Click on Voice Settings
4. On the Phones tab under "Forward calls to" click on the Edit button for your Google Voice enabled mobile phone
5. Where it says "Text Settings" check the box for "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)"
This should send texts to your phones SMS app rather than through the Google Voice app.
Hope this saves others some time searching.
My biggest pet peeves were:
1. Incoming messages from the same sender would sometimes create multiple threads inside of Google Voice.
2. SMS messages received from contacts that were not stored in Google account (i.e. corporate account) would commonly show up from a telephone number versus a name.
3. SMS messages initiated from Google Voice would not show up as threads until they were responded to.
4. Messaging application was rendered useless bloatware.
5. I don't want/need Google Voice to archive 300 - 500 text messages a day.
The entire thing is a cluster____.... I've never quite seen something so utterly stupidly organized and launched like this..
How long does it take it so when someone calls my number they hear my Sprint voicemail message instead? I just called my number and it's still going to the Google voice system. It's not activated just checked as my mobile phone but NOT intergrated anymore.

Brotha -I was about to go insane out of my mind -and then I read this. Thanks. I thought I looked at every possible setting -but there is always a button that eludes you.
Then I had to stop the double notifications bc I was getting my text message on my phone and my text in google voice. So on my phone in GV settings I Un-checked "Inbox notifications"
I was really excited about GV integration - now I wish that Sprint would have left it alone. It really is a big mess to get it to do what you want.

Thanks for the info, this is exactly what I was looking for.
I hope Sprint and Google work something out with this.. If XDA members are scratching their heads how to make this work like they want imagine how a regular novice user must feel.
The Sprint/Google intergration and its current method of "configuring" (ie dice rolling) reminds of some half assed business solution some unknown outside firm was paid to write.
I didn't have to root or uninstall. Just download google voice from the market and let it overwrite the existing installation.

[Q] NFC Task launcher - Auto reply SMS

So..I have a set up that i'm trying to get going with NFC tags..this is not nexus 4 specific per se, but I'm using it with my nexus 4, so here i am
I've been programming nfc tags without a problem with nfc task launcher...which works amazing
there is one thing that i'd like to do that i can't fully figure out
I want to set it up so that when my phone is connected to bluetooth, that it will auto-reply with an SMS
I have a "car mode" tag where it turns off wifi, turns on bluetooth...i'd like it to also do an auto reply to any sms with a message
i currently have tasker and i can set up a profile that will do the auto reply (although i can't figure out the "only send reply when connected with bluetooth" part..but i'm getting close). The problem is that it's a profile, and not a task...so even if i use nfc task launcher to turn on the "task" in tasker...it's the profile that determines if it will automatically send the sms and not the task
is there a way to turn tasker profiles on and off with an nfc task launcher?
Is there an easier way that i'm not getting on how to make my phone auto reply with an sms through nfc task launcher's tags? (llama? launching one of those auto reply apps?)
thanks for the help..
bump for anyone that might know that did not see the thread...
The following was taken from: tasker.wikidot.com/auto-replysms-driving
First we need to setup a profile that will automatically respond to any SMS that we receive. We will later disable it until it is called by our other profile for when the Car Cradle is active.
Profile (SMS Responder)
Click New then Event
Next Click Phone then Received SMS
Make sure to leave the Sender & Message fields blank and click Done
Now we will customize the SMS Responder profile to send SMS responses to everyone except the last sender. This will ensure that a person who texts you twice in a row won't be bombarded with auto-reply texts.
Click the + then Tasker
Select the option If from the menu
Input %LASTSMS in the first box
Ensure the !~ (doesn't match) is selected as the operator
In the last box input %SMSRF
Click Done.
Click the + then Phone
Select the option Send SMS from the menu
Input %SMSRF as the number
For the message input whatever you want to be set back to the sender.
An Example:
Auto-Response: Hi, %SMSRN, I'm currently driving. I'll respond when I can.
If you want to see if the auto-response actually sent make sure to check the box "Store in Messaging App"
Click Done
Click the + then Variable
Select the option Variable Set from the menu
Input %LASTSMS in field Name
Input %SMSRF as the To field
Click Done.
Click the + then Tasker
Select the option End If from the menu
Click Done.
We are almost done with this profile.
Make sure you disable the profile by returning to the main menu
and clicking and holding on the profile name and select Disable
This ensures that tasker won't automatically send an auto-response to everyone that texts you.
Profile (Car Mode)
Click New then Application
Select Car Cradle
Click Done.
Click the + then Tasker
Click Profile Status
Input SMS Responder and select set to On
Click Done.
Click the Enter Task then Add Exit Task
Click the + then Variable
Select the option Variable Clear
Enter %LASTSMS in the Name field.
Click Done.
Click + then Tasker
Select the option Profile Status
Input SMS Responder and select Set to Off
Click Done.
The final two steps clear the %LASTSMS variable and turn off the profile when you take your phone out of the car dock. You want to clear the variable so that the next time your phone is placed in the car dock, everyone will receive the auto response at least once.
If the variable isn't cleared, if Person A texts you the next time the phone is in the dock, and Person A also happens to be the last person who sent you a text before removing the phone from the dock last time, they will not get an auto-response.
You can add other functionality to this profile like bluetooth toggling and volume controls, but this is the bare minimum to get auto-response to a SMS working.
This should help you out with the profile. Instead of having the state be "Car Cradle", yours would be Bluetooth.
I am in a similar situation. I would like to avoid using Tasker profiles all together and just have the NFC Tag be my trigger (context). I will continue to play around, but my end goal is to enter my car, swipe the tag, and have all incoming texts from that point have an autorespond message. Then, upon exiting the car, I will reswipe the tag and the autorespond will be deactivated. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated!
Solution
So I've got it working exactly how I want, and I am posting this as a conclusion to this thread.
Basically, you can use the above steps to get an idea of what needs to be done. What you can do (this directly solves the OP's problem) is create a TASK that involves a PROFILE.
So, using the above example, I created a PROFILE called AutoSMS. The context being receiving a message and the result being the Send SMS. Then, disable this profile so it doesn't happen.
Then, you just need to create a new TASK > + > Tasker > Profiles > Select the profile and set to 'ON'. This will activate the profile and from that point all incoming texts will receive an automated response.
To deactivate this feature, I created another TASK called Home, that will TASK > + > Tasker > Profiles > Select profile and set to 'OFF'. This disables the profile. I swipe the NFC tag a second time on my way out of the car to activate TASK: Home, which disables this feature and returns my phone to its home.
thanks for the help..i'll test it out when i get home and let you know...it sounds like this could work
like you mentioned, i'd rather the nfc tag take care of everything...but this might be a reasonable compromise
Yeah... This isn't working.. Hehe
I programmed everything as it's supposed to be.. That is setup a task/profile to auto reply to any SMS sent.. Then setup a new task to toggle that profile..
When I "play" the task in tasker, it works and toggles the profile successfully and it replies to any SMS...
But when I associate this task to NFC task launcher, it does nothing... Does not turn the profile on or off.. I even tried other tasks and it doesn't work...
I clicked the settings to allow external use of tasker.. but it really seems like NFC task launcher is not touching the task in tasker..
Is there another setting I am missing?
I'm so close to getting this to work..

Was Tasker installed BEFORE NFC Task Launcher was installed. Tasker requires that any app that wants to start a task has a permission that it grants. If this permission isn't available at install it will never be granted (thank Android for this). All I do from NFC Task Launcher is use Tasker's shared class to tell it to start Task N where N is the supplied name. Everything else is on Tasker.

Tasker was installed after NFC task launcher.. Should I reinstall both and install tasker first?
Beyond that.. Tasker and NFC task are both working fine separately and the NFC task has the trigger of starting "task n" as well.. It's just not actually doing it.. Hehe
My Tasker was installed before NFC Task Launcher.
So, its good that your task does toggle the profile. That's a good start. Now you just need to use NFC Task Launcher to trigger that task.
A few things to consider..
- Make sure that Tasker is active.
- Make sure that external applications have access to Tasker (which can be adjusted in the settings portion of Tasker).
- When you create an NFC profile, make sure that the Tasker Task name is exact. This is important and this is the only thing I can think of with regards to your particular dilemma.
- My Tasker Task switches the Tasker Profile to ON and then an exit task to OFF. I did not use the "TOGGLE" feature.
- IF nothing else, I would deactivate tasker > ensure that my NFC Task Launcher is up to date > re-activate tasker, disable the Tasker Profile > create a new NFC Task Launcher profile > ensure the correct Tasker Task is used and the name of the task is spelled correctly > write the NFC Profile to the tag.
I hope this helps!
You might optionally consider using the app Tasker URL Launcher. It's a free plug-in. Once installed you can then write a URL to an NFC Tag that will trigger a tasker task. In this case everything must be handled by Tasker as all the tag does is trigger a tasker task. Anyway, I've found it to be the best way to use Tasker with NFC Tags. And the plug-in doesn't conflict with NFC Task Launcher so you can still use that app for other tags if you don't want to use Tasker for everything...
Hi guys, I am ater similar but maybe a bit more complicated. I am riding a motorcycle and i wuld like to use an nfc sticker that would autoreply when the profile is active, and here comes the complications: i would like to reply to sms texts that come only from my contacts. Also, i would be great if when the profile is active, any calls received will be fowarded directly to a preset voice mail - "i'm riding my bike right now, leave a message and i will call later" this option shold also work only for contacts.
don't ask for much, do i?!
thanks
