[Q] is my TWRP factory rom backup really 8 gb? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i am using TWRP recovery for the first time ever, (only exp is with CWM) with my G2 i did a factory ROM back up , ( build 12b, verizon) and its chewed up 8.3 gb, and i cannot use ROM manager to upload it to my computer.. Is this a glitch, normal, or do i need to adjust a setting? my experience with CWM, i am used to seeing 800mb - 1.5 gb. so im kinda of confused lol. if you got anything that can help me, i would appreciate it. thanks

really hoping someone knows something before i format data

Yeah, man, I think that's normal...32GB total internal memory, stock rom only leaves 24 free. 8GB sounds about right.

My backups with twrp are around 3.5Gb...

I'm not sure if even half of that 8 gb is in use.
But why don't you just check what's taking so much space?

well right now:
boot (16mb)
recovery (16mb)
system (2468 mb)
data (6247mb) < i think this includes a 7.4 gb restore point>
cache (22mb)
then it says I have 9.5 gb avail. doesn't seem to add I up I don't think. isn't this a total storage snap shot of my entire system? but at any rate, when I use CWM my saves tend to be under 1.5 gb.
cache (22mb)

Do you use Google Play Music? If so, I believe that data is stored in the data partition. For me, Google Play Music takes up 5GB on my phone.

How much free space do you have in the storage?
My 8gb is using 5gb. My twrp compressed nandroid is 900mb.

around 4gb free space
enable compression when doing backup will shrink the size.. takes a bit longer...
It depends on how much content you have on your device such as applications. When you perform the backup, there's a little note stating the require space it will occupy for the backup. (You can find it via recovery mode)

[A] Storage space doesnt add up ? Try this

disclaimer: not responsible for any data loss or whatever issues you might do to yourself and no, this will not increase the total size of your sdcard space (which on the 32gb model LG G2 is 25gb)
I've just had an issue where my storage space just wouldnt add up and it bothered me
situation:
"SD card" size: 25GB
actual data on sdcard "16GB" (check with x-plore or any prefered file manager
free space: in my example it was just 2.8Gb
i checked my /data size and it was about 3gb.
so i was missing about 3-4GB of space.
solution for my situation:
check /data/media/obb
here i had large files from 1 current game and games i've allready uninstalled.
these files were obsolete in my case. I dont know how this happens, maybe it happens when switching roms. but if you feel you got some space missing its definetly worth a check.
On my nexus7 the /data/media/obb and /sdcard/Android/obb are linked and show the same content.. dont know why it is not so on the g2.
note: this files presist also when doing full wipes (if you dont wipe internal storage) because recoveries like TWRP skip /data/media folder because it has references to the sdcard.

So how are you suggesting to deal with this?
I just explained. Check if you have stuff in /data/media/obb. If you have, you probably shouldnt have. Try and delete and check if that app still works.

OK so I'll just have to go through with a fine comb and match files and delete ones that shouldn't be there basically right... My question is the g2 comes with 32gb storage. I am using cm11 and I deleted the stock backup.. Where is all that extra space lol..

no you wont get any more than 25gb, because the rest is mounted on /system which doesnt change size when you install diferent rom.
in my example i had 1.5Gb file from fifa14 in /data/media/obb and also in /sdcard/android/obb i deleted the one in /data/media/obb and fifa still runs fine. the other files 2GB in size, were from games i've uninstalled or didnt install on the new rom. maybe its left overs from swiitching roms... anyway.. i got my space back.

I understand what you're saying and I am glad that you got your space back but what I am saying is I am running cyanogen mod and it is about 400 megabytes total.. I deleted the 3gb of stock ROM... Where is my extra space.. See what I mean lol.. Its because of the partition..I just need to figure out how to re divide up that space

I dont think you can. Especially not with a locked bootloader. I know it was possbile to do this on my old HTC, but right now on the LG G2 is not.
you have your extra space on /system .... if its any use of you

[Q] Why is phone storage 8.94GB after installing ROM?

I used to have 6GB free from my 16GB GS4. I installed Omega ROM and now it says 2GB free out of 8.94GB. Can I get them back and still use the rom?

That's normal if you downloaded a lot of apps, or created a few nandroid backups.
If you have videos in the phone that also uses a lot of memory, pictures uses memory.
If you are like I am, I keep about 2 GB of MP3 songs on my phone, that's takes up
a lot of memory too.
Check for nandroid backups in either your clockworkmod folders if you use cwm recovery
or in your TWRP folder and sub-folders if you use TWRP recovery for backups.
Nandroid backups take up a lot of user available memory.
Our phones have a total of 16gb memory (a little less due to the formatting overhead).
Within that memory there is a pre-allocated partition of approx 6gb designed to
be used by the firmware/rom and it's associated files, images and cache.
The size of that partition cannot be changed by the user and if you flash a rom
which is 2GB in size or 1GB the total free available memory for the user will
remain the same, it will not add or subtract from the total free space to the user.
Good luck!

s4 has 9.13gb max free, you need to enter recovery and wipe a lot of things from internal memory
be carefull with your data
after rom flash, should be around 8gb 8.5gb (with gpe roms)
Did you make a backup using your recovery and stored it to your internal storage? That could take up A LOT of space!!
What's cached data?
It has taken up 1.42GB of my memory

[Q] storage space running out

hi,
i have a storage issue that i'll like to ask the gurus.. I've just moved from PSX's v8.5 (4.3) to PSX v3 (4.4) and along the way, I've made numerous backups just in case. after flashing v3 and hellscore b43, i ran into a storage space issue where my N4 told me i had insufficient space to install more apps, to work system functions, anything. Ive attached a screenshot of my storage, but it seems to be there is a good 5-6gb of space unaccounted for? i have v little songs in my phone, no movies, little apps as well. its rooted. can anyone point to as to how i can solve this?
thanks!
to add on, I've used storage analyser to better understand by storage, and it says i have 9.87gb available, whilte the stock storage details shows the number at 611mb.
help pls?

hi, I've tried that, but to no avail..
ive also realised that system data takes up a huge chunk, more than 6gb. which is where most of the missing storage is. help, anyone?

Have you downgraded to the rom where you don't have this problem?
Sent from my Nexus 7 (2013)
I only just realised I was having the same issue when I got an insufficient storage available message while trying to update some apps. To solve it reboot into recovery then go on backup and restore and delete any unnecessary backups you have, if the ROM's working now then you could do with deleting all of the old backups and making one fresh one with the new ROM. Also do the 'free unused space' thing in CWM, I had no backups but somehow there was almost 3 gigs of space being wasted by CWM. There's probably something similar in TWRP if you use that

You've got the right app. check your /data directory to see what's chewing up space. I bet it's TWRP or other stuff stored by your recovery manager.
Use this great app to check whats taking up space: Storage analyzer
When u make full backups they won't show up in the system storage scan. Go to the file directly n try deleting an old backup. I guarantee u will see more space available after u do. Each backup is usually about 400-500mb depending on how many apps n other data u have
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Or maybe you got shrinkage problem which is pretty normal when upgrading (seeing that you flashed 4.4.2 rom over 4.3 rom). Your 16gb nexus was shrinked to 8gb. The easiest way to fix it is by formatting your internal in recovery (or flash stock recovery and do factory reset). Do make backup of your things though cause you'll lose them.

[q] usable storage is not reasonable

Hello everybody, i have a i9500 phone, with crash rom installed..
Here is the question,
In the storage section,
All Storage is 8,8
Apps are 2.9 GB
Photos, videos are 125 MB
Audio is 496 KB
Downloads is 114 MB
And the others are 44 and 70
But it says usable storage is 1,09
As you see, usable storage should be at least 4-5 gb,
Why is it like this and what should I do?
Tried flashing other roms like cm11 and phoenix, but no help.
Wiping data doesn't help either.
What should I do?

U can go check in settings -> more -> storage -> misc and see there can b thumbnail files with 100s mb of size u can delete that. Its not going to harm your real photos. Plus if u hv a backup there like Titanium or nandroid u can delete that too to increase space
If none works
Thn there is always external SD

Anyone know how to fix this?
I was on custom rom, I had this problem. Now i'm back to stock but still 2 GB missing.
Solution
Alright finally fixed it. With ES file explorer I went to mnt > shell > 0 > Android > obb. Apparently, there were 2 game files that should've been deleted but for some reason they were there.
So yeah whatever it is, it can be found with root file explorers and can be deleted, you just gotta search.
Worth noting: if you've ever made a backup via recovery (cwm), it will eat up a good 3-4gb.

Yes but it would be seen in the storage info under miscellaneous category. The problem here was that some of the memory was missing without any info as to what's using it.

No, it doesn't show up on misc. Titanium backup will be listed, but not if you backed up using recovery. The back up I'm referring to is of the phone in its entirety which can be between 3-6gb.
