Has anyone noticed that the warm colors are only available when looking at the display head on?
Tilting just a few degrees does keep the image sharp, but the colors are much colder...
What im asking is - is this normal, or should i get another?
Well - i just spoke to supercurio, he says its to do with crappy glass treatment, not the panel itself.
Will go and see what else they have at the store tomorrow...
Only a slight change in color for me. Nothing that I would say is an "issue". But, of course, it depends on your personal perception...
What more annoys me is the banding (gradient) and the oversaturated, unnatural colors that I experienced with all AMOLED displays until now. I prefer LC displays...

Seems to be common in Samsung devices but not all exhibit such a bad viewing angle, my Galaxy S and S8500 didnt have any color temperature changes when tilted even at extreme angles while my Galaxy S2 had a slight shift to green, while my note's first screen didnt have any hint of temperature change but after the screen replacement I had a blue tint with really bad viewing angles.
I havent seen how bad it is on the Tab7.7 but im guessing its gonna be similar.

Found this show case video on the Galaxy Note about the viewing angles, their unit doesnt seem to exhibit any color changes.

Don't let me stop you, just letting you know that its common among samsung devices but not all of them exhibit the same issue, a friend dropped by after getting his tab 7.7 about 2hrs ago and there is no color change at an angle, so yours might be faulty.

The other guy does have a point in saying that its common to all Samsung devices especially the Galaxy S line of devices. I've had a Galaxy S2 that had color temperature change when viewed from an angle and even my current nexus does it.
I got my galaxy tab 7.7 2 weeks ago and I'm very happy to say that it does not have any temperature color change even viewed at an extreme angle.
And this guy did an unboxing and also mentioned that he has no color changes when viewed from an angle as well

Right, ill try to take it easy. But you might want to think why opinions about "Samsung devices" are completely irrelevant...

That you notice.
This would be the first OLED or any screen (LCD obviously is bad for this) that doesn't change a bit when viewed off axis then. I have seen the Note, the Infuse, and even Zune HD screens and they all shift a bit when viewed at an angle. I would be very suprised if this did't shift at all but I suppose it may be possible.

Look at the video posted above on the note, it does not have any color temperature change as far as I can tell. Before I had my screen replacement it was similar to that.
Just bought three more for the office, all with perfect screens. The first was a dud, store took it back after some cajoling.

I also took mine back because it turned blue when i looked at it at a small angle. New one is not perfect either, still distorting way more than screen on my lcd 8.9 though.
I wonder how many people just dont realise that small color distorion is normal and never complain and how many actually haver crappy screens (since i assume they are pretty much the same manufacture date)?

I also wonder what you're doing with your tablets... When I'm using mine I'm holding in front of me, I don't tilt it at 78.5 degrees only to see that physics does its job with the glass filtering/separating colours at certain angles through reflections between the two glass surfaces.
You can't just have everything: a super-tough screen glass, brilliant colours, high resolution, crisp sharpness, 180 degrees viewing angles in every direction.... Be happy with the best screen in a tablet so far!

Actually you can. My very first 7500 was PERFECT. As was an excellent Incredible S i owned.
Ive now seen 4 of these and none had what i would call a good screen compared to the LCD in my first 7500. Changing up to 170 degrees on it only affects the brightness not the pixels visible color temperatures.
it's surprising how bad the viewing angles are. It's more prevalent when you watch a movie on it like game of thrones where everything is dark. That or i'm having a major issue with light bleed. The blacks seem clouded and when i change the angle, you can see that the viewing angles aren't optimum.
Is this expected out of this note? I assume the PLS LCD from samsung was the IPS equivalent. It's shocking considering my Nexus 7 feels like a better screen.
It doesn't have the viewing angles of an AMOLED screen, but I find it sufficient. Based on what I've read in other sections of xda, PLS actually has better viewing angles than IPS or at least that's what's being perceived.
It's not just you, there is significant brightness falloff when viewing it off angle. However, there is very little, if any, color shift when viewing off angle. I can live with it, because of the pen. If it wasn't for the pen then there are several other tablets that are waay better at being tablets than the note.
I dont really have this problem, or else ive compensated in one way for another. In power savings mode i notice it more, but i have it on power savings mode at those times for a reason. See if you can change your screen mode in settings under display. That has helped me before during movies, however during movies i have this upright and i dont really touch the tablet .

iPad 4, iPad 3, Nexus 10, maybe even the TF Infinity pad if you're into that sort of thing. The high res + better off-axis viewing angles make for more enjoyable consumption devices.
Edit: I freaking love the Note btw because I need the s-pen. I'm just impervious to the reality distortion field that exists for every Android device in their own sections on XDA.

Friends of mine have Ipads, all versions of it and they all complain that my tab can do and handle alot more than thiers. the Nexus 10 is not as good as the note. Samsung I believe made the nexus 10. They are not gonna make a better product for someone else. And the Infinity? I hope you are joking! I had 3 of those things and and was not better than the note.

GSMArena, Swedroid, and Anandtech are the three sites that do thorough standardized testing. GSMArena's review of the Note was 8 pages long. Here's what they said about the display. I think it pretty much matches people's experiences.
The 10.1-inch PLS LCD screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels gets the job done but fails to impress. Android slates such as the ASUS Transformer Prime TF700T and the Acer Iconia Tab A700 are rocking full HD resolution, and the iPad 3 is in a league of its own with its 3.1MP screen. As a result pixel density on the Note 10.1 is nothing to be excited about (149ppi), but big tablets like this are viewed at a bigger distance than phones, so it's not as much of an issue as you might have thought. Still, if you've seen the new iPad, the difference in sharpness is quite noticeable. Numbers aside, the image quality is decent. Viewing angles are very good and blacks look reasonably deep.

I think some of you guys are staring to hard at HD LCD because there is zero issue looking at my screen from an angle and that's with brightness down.... ur just use to looking at the Nexus or the ipad that has a higher resolution... there's nothing wrong with the notes screen!
I don't have any issues with viewing angles, so my vote is its just you.
I like dealing with evidence so attached are some pictures I took with manual settings and a custom whitebalance. Contrast appears lower when viewing off angle. Or maybe Samsung did the classic switch-a-roo where early adopters get nice panels and then they switch to crummier / cheaper ones down the line.
Okay so I looked more carefully and I definitely see that off-angle viewing results in the dark or black areas of photos / movies become a grayish mess, kind of like in the bottom left hand corner of my second photo. The saturated / brighter parts of the photo are fine though. Anyway, I don't really care because the Note is awesome, I just wanted to bring some facts to the table instead of subjectivity.

To give people an idea of what i see. When I play game of thrones. During dark scenes, everything looks cloudy. And at low brightnesses, in complete darkness, I still have to pump up my brightness to 40%.
I have a Nexus 7, Retina Macbook next to me. You can clearly see a difference. Also, on different angles magnifies that "white cloud". It's very similar to those TFT on laptops showing very bad blacks. The blacks are bad, but the clouding above is significant.
I bought it for the S-pen and work but it's something I noticed over the weekend.
Try movie mode under screen mode, let me know if it makes a difference. This is one of the only tablets i have to install a screen filter app on because its too bright in total darkness.
I find the viewing angle issues are easily solved using the following steps:
1) Sit in a comfortable chair.
2) Hold the SGN10.1 directly in front of you.
I mean, is there a particular reason you feel the need to view your Note from an extreme angle?

Why would anyone want to watch movies on a tablet in an angle anyway?

I just yesterday picked this puppy up at BB and, quite honestly, am very disappointed in the display, specifically the hue. All the yellows are washed out -- WTF???!!
Resolution is awesome but the white background when browsing looks like I'm looking at it under old-style fluorescent lighting -- YUCK!
I've played with all the Settings > Display > Screen mode modes and there's barely a change when going from one to another.
Is this correctible? Is it a TouchWiz thing? Will a different ROM help?
(FWIW -- I'm upgrading from a Xoom running Eos ROMs and other than the resolution, it was gorgeous. The Xoom was a great device: heavy, granted, but the bezel width really did set the standard that tablet manufacturers seem to be migrating towards.)
PLEASE TELL ME THERE'S A SOLUTION!!! THE COLOR RENDITION IS SO UNPALATABLE I VERY WELL MIGHT RETURN IT AFTER LUSTING AFTER IT FOR MONTHS!

Sounds like a hardware problem. I don't see how Touchwiz (or any ROM) could be responsible for that. Better have it exchanged.

Color accuracy is pretty decent on the Note 10.1’s display. As always I’m reporting color data using Samsung’s Movie mode, which remains the most accurate setting of those offered. Grayscale performance is excellent, but our GMB and saturations tests put the Note 10.1 on par with the original Nexus 7. It’s definitely a better calibrated display than any other Samsung Galaxy Note tablet we’ve reviewed. Not quite on par with the new Nexus 7, but getting very close.

My screen is great.
I have minor light bleed on bottom edge but thats not bothersome and barely noticeable.
Never had any problems with color rendition. Not to the extent you said it sounds like. Its been pretty natural looking for me.

No, there's no yellow cast: rather, the yellow's are washed out and not at all vibrant. White backgrounds have a blue-ish gray-ish tone and the only analogy I can muster is that it's like the color temperature is "cool," as opposed to "warm." Canary yellows come out looking dull gold; skin tones are very off-putting and for a top-dollar device, it's really not pleasant.
Side-by-side with my GN2, the colors are much truer on my GN2, hands down.

I leave both my N3 and N10.1-14 on Adapt Display. On the N3 it's the only way to achieve maximum brightness in bright conditions; like an additional 150 nits. I'm not sure if the N10.1-14's Adapt Display works the same way. I have to confess, while Movie Mode may be more accurate I've come to like overly saturated colors on my mobile devices.

To me......... In your (photo 3) side by side photo's I think the device on the left is to red and has to much color saturation the tablet looks good to me in that photo....
There is at lease 2 places in the control panel of the P-600 to adjust color, have you seen them?
If you not happy with the way it looks and you can exchange it you should. If you don't you will always have this thought in the back of your mind.

as another user said, it sounds like reading mode is turned on make sure it's off. It probably unlikely that this is the problem though since the the only app that defaults with reading mode on is play books.

I'm not quite sure how to say this without sounding impolite but several of you seem not to have read my posts completely, so please allow me to start over.
My yellows are very washed out: what ought to be bright canary yellows are dull gold. For example: the yellow in the Chrome logo is what I define as "yellow." On the GM10.1, 2014 Ed. it appears gold and dull.
Skin tones are wan and blue-ish.
White web page areas are gray-blue-ish.
Overall color temperature is "cool."
Reading mode does warm things up a bit...but still, I can't get any combination of settings where yellows "pop".
Settings > Device > Display > Screen mode is set to "movie" and that barely affects the vibrancy of the yellows; in fact there is no real difference between all four of the options.
IN SUM: COLOR RENDITION SUCKS.
Take it back to Best Buy?

The subpixel arrangement creates a dot effect more seen in print when looking through a magnifying glass. While not overly distracting, I do notice it at times. My biggest complaint is the blueish hue shift in darker tones when putting the display at an angle. Is this a TN panel ? I've always had OLED and my Oppo Find 5 was the first smartphone I've owned that didn't have a OLED screen. Still, the find 5 screen was MUCH better than the note 10.1 2014. Especially the black levels are kinda disappointing. I think the screen is WAY overrated in reviews. I primarily use the note in darker indoor areas so I have no use for the extra brightness delivered by the white subpixel.
I still think it's a great device tough, and for the price there is nothing like it. I would like to see some CM and Omni builds for it though which retain the wacom S pen "drivers". I don't care for the samsung features, I just want to use Autodesk Sketchbook.
Overall, I'm really happy with my display. My one complaint is that viewing angles seem to be a little off.

What I know is that this device comes with LCD display. Not amoled. So there.is not pentile design. Because it is not amoled. The color would not look as vivid as amoled, yellow will look like a bit washout because of the backlight compared to amoled

As you can see, Note 10.1 2014 edition is pentile. You can also see this when looking at the screen. Transitions between some colors are a bit blurry.
When talking about display performance there's the objective and subjective. GSMArena, AnandTech, and NoteBookCheck DE all run an extensive battery of standardized tests on all the devices they review. All praise the N10.1-14's display; especially compared to previous Samsung LCD displays.

Think average is a silly comment. I prefer the display to the ipad air. Sometimes wish the whites were slightly better. But I would like to see anyone who has a better screen on an Android 10 inch tablet

Hello, I'm new to XDA. So excuse me if I may be a little 'nooby'. I've noticed that the colors on my new Nexus 6P shift when I view it from an angle. Generally, the viewing angles are bad. At extreme angles, the colors pretty much go rainbow on me. I thought that's how AMOLED displays are, until I checked my S6 edge. The viewing angles were perfect, no color distortion on it. Is it a problem with just my device? A quick Google search let me know that there are others with the same issue too. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
(PS: Upon regular usage, the display is perfect, no problems. Only when I tilt the phone I see the color shifting).
Yeah lots of people seeing this. My screen was fine if I looked at it from an angle but awful looking straight on. I don't have much advice for you. I returned mine for a refund. But there is quite a few threads in here already about this, have a look through them
It's the nature of amoled screens. Just depends to what extent there like it and how much you notice it

Mine is the same, perfect when looking at it straight on, all kinds of colour shifts at angles, it doesn't bother me one bit as I don't use my phone at an angle anyway.

Oh. Thanks for the answers. The display is fine. It's only extreme viewing angles that rainbow out. Anyway, I probably won't use the phone at those angles anyway!

I neead some pieces of advice really fast!
My nexus 6P seems to have really really bad viewing angles..basically even if i move it a little while i am typing, the keyboard color gets bluish.
Please watch this video (also please forgive the backround noise). This is my 6P. I know that the video is not of a very high quality (it was taken with my ipad 2) but you can still see the problem when i use the keyboard. It can also be seen when i try to reach the notification bar.

Is yours doing the same? Is it normal? Should I ask for a replacement? I am really curious if your 6P is doing the the same.

Does it happen on yours as well? or on your devices with amoled sreen? I am really interested if you guys have the Nexus 6P. Also, isn't the angle when the colors shift appears too narrow?
I mean..for me it happens at the slightest angle. if I hold the phone with the keyboard open..and I shake it a bit i can see the color getting bluish..like..immediately.

Yeah, it's the same on my Nexus 6P. To me it's barely noticeable.

When you say it's barely noticeable...you mean...you barely notice it. or it is not so obvious on your display? is mine worse thank yours..and by this I mean...does it appear on a wider angle for you? Or is it the same?

Oh..and by the way guys..did you notice the color shift on my keyboard? (just wanted to make sure if you also noticed the green tint on that)

I'd say mine looks and acts the same way yours does, it just doesn't bother me in my regular usage.
AMOLED screens generally have narrowing viewing angles than IPS LCD screens before you start seeing color shifts like that. It's the tradeoff -- along with off-color whites - that you get for having more vibrant colors/real blacks and the ability to activate only certain portions of the screen (not really explored on the 6p, but Active Display on Moto X is an example). AMOLED is considered better for videos etc because of the vibrancy/deeper blacks but LCD tends to be brighter/easier to read outdoors.
I don't consider one better than the other, just a matter of taste.
Did you come from a phone that didn't have an AMOLED display or a Samsung (anecdotal theories that the better panels get binned for them, not by me but in other threads I've read)?

I am coming from a Galay s3...and it did not do this on it.

I'm not saying it's "normal" but rather, it seems like the panels used on the 6P vary on this issue (color shift) quite a bit. I do not know if this would be considered a manufacturing defect but there have been other threads of people exchanging their phones with the same issue; they would be better equipped to advise you re: returning this particular phone.
One thing to note is that in a Reddit AMA the Nexus team confirmed that they were using the latest generation panel from Samsung, so I would expect the panels to be of the same quality as the same one in a Samsung phone.
If you are still within the return window it's up to you to exchange if it is really bothering you. Someone on Reddit was in a similar position here. Note the first reply and the two images linked angle #1 and angle #2, where one of the phones had a much more obvious shift in color when tilted.

I am 100% sure that the shop I bought it from will replace it for me if I ask for it. If i choose to exchange directly on their shop should they let me compare both of them and keep the one that is better?
