[Q] Wanting to remove Android completely and use Debian - Ouya General

Hi,
I got an Ouya on Kickstarter and have played it a few times. Although it's an impressive unit, I'm not into the games nor am I into learning Android development at this point. Most things I've been doing have been in Java and on Linux.
I'm wondering if there's a way that I can completely ditch Android on my Ouya and use it as a Linux box instead?

Android apps?

Is there any way to use Android Apps on your PC?
What I mean is emulate, like play games and such.
I tried the Android SDK Emulator, and it was really slow.
As far as i know that is the only Emulator you can get.
Exactly, it is the only one. There are convertions though, like Angry Bird for PC and such.
You can create an Android VM in VirtualBox. The VM OS will still have to be the same architecture as your cpu though (so you'll probably need Android x86)
Without the touch screen etc its probably not going to be very practical!?

Tablet Layout To Phone

Is there any way that my phone will simulate the layout of a tablet? I'm planning on developing an app that will be designed solely for tablets, the problem is, I'm very short on cash so I can't buy a new or even a used tablet for developing, I can't even rely on my laptop for development because my laptop's specs can't handle any android emulator out there, So I came to rely mostly on my android phone for development, The problem is I need to develop an app that has a tablet layout.

Click to collapse
Have you got your phone rooted? There is an XPosed module called App Settings with which you can change the dpi of your app, but I think that is also possible in a ParanoidAndroid ROM. What else do you need to change for a tablet wise layout? Screen resolution or aspect ratio is hard to change, though it can be simulated in the developer options. For everything else, there is still an emulator!

[Q] need help setting up android wear app using android virtual machine

Hello everybody,
I purchased a Motorola 360 smartwatch in order to pair it with my iphone.
There are numerous threads and procedures available online, and I have tried a lot of them, but am stuck and need some help.
I posted in a general question sticky thread (as a reply), but nobody got back to me.
If this post is not to be in this section, please let me know where to post.
My situation I got up to so far is that
1. I got virtual box set up and android x86 set up inside it, with 4.3.
2. I even got the setup rooted.
(I don't have an android phone)
When I try to download aerlink android wear for ios app, it tells me that it cannot be installed because the "device isn't compatible"
From what I hear in forums and other website, it is because the android machine is not set up as a phone, and it can be done through market helper app and/or editing the build.prop file.
However, I have tried all of that, but was unsuccessful- I install the market helper app, and opened and modified the build.prop file, but it still gives me the error.
Can anybody help me in getting the virtual machine setup for this part of the procedure, or inform me of any other methods that will work in my case?
This part has been quite frustrating for me, and I can really use some help.
Thanks everybody for reading, and helpful replies (in advance)!
What iPhone do you have and on what iOS?
Personally i have a similar situation, i had a Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Gear 2, recently with great Kudos and thanks to one of the most amazing devs i have seen so far in the scene named Biktor, i know have Android Wear running on my Gear 2, since i switched to iPhone 6 + Currently running iOS 8.4 JB the Gear 2 was more than useless considering i could not create any access to the Gear App store
So i found my self in a similar predicament and this is what worked for me thus far.
I am running Android x86 4.4 r2 on VMWare 11 on my PC and it worked with 2 cheap dongles i had laying around, the setup worked just as well on VMWare Fusion and the latest Parallels on Mac running the same Android Image.
on Android and Wear side you can use.
Aerlink (most recommended although WearAday is pretty much identical) Download Aerlink on your VM and it will get installed on your Moto 360
On your iPhone, Assuming you are running iOS 8.0 and up and you have at least an iPhone 5 you should have no problem downloading the app, that being said if you are sporting a iPhone 4s or lower you cant run the app since i has no BLE hardware
If that is not the issue then download it, run it on you Moto and flip on the service switch, open the app on the iPhone and have the BT on, once the service is up bring up the Aerlink card on the watchface and press Search, it will find your iPhone and ask to pair with a 6 number key and your good to go.
Same goes for WearAday , Download on PlayStore, open it on VM then on Moto 360, and finally on iPhone.
there is also wear for iOS but it is not as far ahead as the other two.
hope i helped

What are the alternatives for developing android application?

I tried to develop an android application that will be used to calculate electricity bill in a house using android studio and Genymotion as the emulator. But i encountered some problems as the laptop i used is running out of RAM if i were using both of them at the same time. When i tried using Genymotion to run the application, the emulator will tell me "unfortunately, application has stopped.". I struggled to find the problem because the android studio sometimes are running fine and sometimes dont. It will lag most of the time together with Genymotion.
As i am running out of time for the developing process, I would like to seek some alternatives for developing android application instead of using Android Studio. I have Adobe Flash, Flash Builder and Unity in my laptop as well.
My laptop is 2.5GB of RAM. Is there any other software to develop the android applications without upgrading my RAM?
Thank you.
Try to run the application on a real device

Have you tried Android studios emulator?
Make sure you are using the right system image for your CPU architecture. Also older versions of Android should be lighter on RAM to run. Try the oldest version your app will support.
If you're still unable to run it you can try removing some system apps from the emulator.
I do all my testing on my phone through wireless adb. It makes life so easy. If you're going to be doing a lot of Android development you need an android device period.
Android Studio Emulator is heavier than Genny Motion, but no limitation.
You may use real device for testing purpose. Use eclipse is also less heavier than Android Studio, but it's nolonger supported.
If you running the Android Studio and emulator, the hardware must be at least 4GB ram.
If you have to make a videogame, I suggest to continue to use Unity.

Has anyone tried Linux Deploy, LXC or the like on SATV?

Hello, im a new user of the Nvidia Shield TV (Well i don't have it with me yet) but not new at all to Android world, flashing, etc.
Everything i want to use it for its been covered and already have read and watched videos about it, except 1 thing i need to do and yet there's little documentation and not much video reviews about it.
I want to be able to run few linux applications from Android TV, no dualboot. I prefer NOT to mess much with my shield, meaning avoid flashing custom kernels and even root if possible.
I need to run gimp, torrent client, java and few java apps (no games),nothing fancy with a light weight GUI like LXDE, needs to be always available 24/7 in the background.
There is LXC Containers for Shield Android TV covered in the link below, but that would require rooting and flashing custom kernel: http://www.videomap.it/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1604&sid=f53730b7bd38a192f2e08516fecd95c1
There is Linux Deploy app and similars that may require or not root. LD gives the option to use rootfs too.
If any of you have a similar setup already running please post a brief review of your setup, what distro are you running and what method/app did you choose to run linux on android and why. Interested in speeds and performance aswell.
