Ok so my SGH-I337 S4 is rooted using Motochopper and is still stock ROM, just rooted. I did it so I could make Google Wallet work on AT&T, which was successful. Now AT&T has an OTA update that I want. So I will have to unroot. I already have the stock ROM download that I can flash via Odin to unroot. But what will happen to the apps I have installed that require root, like Titanium Backup, ROM manager, etc. Will they automatically be removed or just stop working? Also, has anyone had any experience with the Universal Unroot app? That would sure be easier. But my main question remains: what does Unrooting do to apps that are installed that require root privileges?
Sent from my SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4
When you user Odin you'll have to do a factory reset or you'll get into a boot loop. So by by apps. Your tibu backup file will still be there, but just in case copy it to your pc before hand. The apps that require root will not work until you re-root.
Hi highly recommend you don't get the ota. Even though it's root able it's very dangerous to do so.
What I will say, if you want the update is to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43963746 and you will have the benefit of the OTA and not lose the root and custom recovery, and all the app will work! You will not upgrade the bootloader. Once you updated the bootloader is not coming back!

I don't understand why you get a boot loop. I once soft bricked a phone and used Odin to flash a md5.tar of a stock ROM. The phone rebooted and I saw my wallpaper and all my apps and data intact. I have seen threads on Unrooting that describe using Odin that way. They all said that doing a factory reset afterword is if you want to delete all your apps and data like if you sell your phone or just want it as it was out of the box

thats interesting. were you on stock when you soft bricked it?
many, many...many users commonly have to wipe data/factory reset after flashing stock via odin. sometimes they can get away with just a cache wipe. not often, though.
I had used (can't remember his name) Galaxy S3 Toolkit to root the phone. Interestingly, Root Checker said I was rooted, but Titanium Backup wouldn't install... It said I needed root access... Hmmm.... Later when I went to unroot using the same S3 Toolkit, I did something wrong. The phone would boot but stick at tiny little letters in the upper left of the screen that I *think* said recover. I messaged the developer of the Toolkit and he sent me a link to download the original AT&T stock ROM. He told me how to use Odin and check the PDA box. I did it and it fixed my phone.

thats why i asked if you were still on stock when you used odin. most users are not, which is ultimately what requires them to factory reset in recovery.
I wonder if universal unroot is trustworthy
Sent from my SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4
All that would happen to your rooted apps is they wouldn't have root privileges anymore, which means they ultimately won't work as expected. I would recommend uninstalling them before you update. You may also be able to do a full unroot via SuperSU or one of the other superuser apps.
NOTE: Your phone may not update even after unrooting. You may have to do a factory reset first. I don't know why, I'm not a developer. I'm just speaking out of my own experience from the past.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 through AT&T (which I'm beginning to think was a huge mistake). The phone recently was supposed to receive and update through AT&T update service. The update is about 730 MB and takes about an hour to download, however upon restarting and the update getting to 25% completion it fails and reboots. This wouldn't be a huge issue but my Gallery app has since complete stopped working and the phone is generally acting screwy since the failure.
The first few times this happened i eventually gave up and looked into installing CyanogenMod onto this worthless brick but I can't seem to find any way to get ClockworkMod Recovery onto it.
As of right now I'm sitting here with an $800 POS that I'm stuck with for about another year and 8 months so any help either getting through the update or moving to CyanogenMod would be amazing.
Yeah you cannot install that on your phone, even on MF3.

Have you tried Odin MF3 from the md5 thread in general section. If not give it a go and if it flashes you back to MF3 then re root and install Supersu pro to use survival mode and take the update again.
ROOTED ATT MK2 using Tapatalk
i had the exact same problem. i ended up backing my phone up with titanium, flashing mf3 with odin and then rooting and restoring. then it took the update.
I tried flashing back to stock with Odin and just keeping getting a FAIL! Auth message on my phone and in the desktop application

@uchua Did u try follow my thread for MK2 tar .....u can upgrade to MK2 from MF3 easily or unbricked your MK2. For guide on how to check on POST#2 with image guide....GOODLUCK....let me know how it go.....:good::good:
EDIT: Or u can try this MF3 tar. But remember MF3 and MK2 CAN'T install CWM or TWRP RECOVERY.....u ended up BRICKED.....U CAN ONLY INSTALL SAFESTRAP RECOVERY
Actually it ended up being that the .tar.md5 file I was using was invalid. Upon finding the right ones I managed to reflash the original image and update to MK2. So I guess now my issue is resolved.
How do I take the new update? I am rooted by dela vega and on mj7. I tried using survival mode on supersu but it didn't work.

I haven't tried as I'm waiting on Beans to incorporate this new update in his Build 5 rom. Make sure you have all of the bloat ware that was pre installed or the OTA won't update. I tried updating with earlier OTA updates and forgot to unfreeze the bloat ware so it didn't work.
Take a sec and hit thanks if I helped or if you're in a good mood!
I tried. I used survival mode and un froze everything I had froze. It error ed. Gonna have to wait or see if anyone un roots, updates, and then re roots. I'd go the rom root but the stock is working fine for me. I just like root access and want the up to date software.

LOL, I don't know about "loving it" but it does work just fine for me.
I was running Beans etc. on mi9. The OTA failed repeatedly, so I finally gave up & flashed the odin tar of mj7 which made the phone like it was brand new right out of the box..
At that point, the OTA completed successfully. That left me without root or safestrap however, so I did the kingo root, reinstalled safestrap and installed the paid Pro version of SuperSU.
At that point, I flashed Beans v4 ROM in the stock ROM slot after doing a complete wipe in safestrap recovery.
Now, the system runs absolutely perfectly. I have not had a single problem of any kind. The system absolutely flies, no lag whatever and not a single FC or freeze up. I have a custom theme installed and quite a few system UI changes with Xposed/ Wanam etc.etc.etc.
Survival mode is hit and miss best way to do it is odin back to mj7 and ota then kingo all your safstrap backups will save and will have new modem so ur not loesing anything

I was on MJ7 rooted by kingo.
Here is what I did.
Backup apps
When to my stock rom
Uninstalled safestrap
Unrooted with kingo (must be on stock rom slot as I found out)
Then took the ota and it failed.
So I downloaded new odin
Downloaded MJ7 tar file.
Flashed that and did not loose any data on my phone.
Then I took the OTA
(Now successfully on MJE)
Wifi wasn't connecting
Rerooted with kingo.
Installed safestrap
Booted back into my rom slot for clean rom. Wifi now works.
Downloaded new clean rom 1.5
And clean flashes.
Restored apps.
Everything works flawless here.
Amazing battery.
No you do not need to take the OTA.
If your phone works fine the way it is then why change it.
It is only worth it if you plan on staying with the latest builds here on XDA.
I assume hyperdrive will follow up shortly to MJE.
Beans will have one out any day now.
And clean rom works amazing for me.
YOU HAVE TO GET TO MJE IF YOU WANT TO RUN A MJE BASED ROM AS DAILY QUALITY

I for one am loving it. I got this phone through my job and put my t-mobile sim in it and was happy on H+ with it, but this update has now allowed a true 4GLTE connection with my tmobile sim. using the same APN settings as before. Sweet.
I'm currently on mj7 rooted with safe strap. I think I'm going to try to find a cheap Windows laptop of some sort since Mac is all I have. I have frozen the system update in tibu for now. Should I get a Chrome book? Will probably only use it to tweak my android devices. Thanks

I got ambitious and tried to take the update. Previously used Odin to flash to MJ7 and rooted with vroot(Kingo did not work). I booted to recovery switched to stock slot rebooted and tried to take the update, It failed, so I went back to recovery, did a factory reset and rebooted. No success in taking the update. Any suggestions as to what I should do next?
Well, here's what I did. I'm just rooted, stock recovery. Rooted back on MI9 with de la vega. No safestrap, etc
Unfroze all frozen apps with TBU
I went to Safe Mode on Super SU
Disabled Super SU
Took the update
Reenabled Super SU
Unchecked Safe Mode
Updated Binaries
Used a root checker to recheck root
Froze apps again

First off I apologize if this is in the wrong section or has been asked before, I couldn't really find the answer I'm looking for.
So I have my S4 (4.2.2 if it matters) rooted and TWRP recovery loaded on it. I was getting the ATT update message and I kept hitting ignore or remind me latter, however I noticed last night it starts to try to install and restart without giving me an option to cancel it. I quickly remove the battery to prevent my phone from updating.
My question is, how do I stop this update when I turn my phone back on? I don't want it to update the firmware and lock my boot loader. Or am I making a big deal over nothing?
Thanks in advance

Thanks so much.
Just one more think, I just want to make sure that when I turn my phone back on that the update won't finish installing (it was in the process of installing when I shut it off).
Thanks again for all the help.
I'm assuming that u have MDB/MDL firmware. ......Take your Att sim card out. ... u need to root your phone. ... install Titanium back up and go to Att software update app ....back up first just incase u need it to return to att and then uninstall it...... that's should stop it from OTA update
SWYPED_FROM_S4_MF3_REDVENOM
Yep, you're going to want to root and then rename or freeze those files, you found in the Google search. That will stop the update
Taking just the SIM out at this point won't help. Only way to completely stop it now since it was installing is to Odin back to MDL and start the root process.

So not to keep asking the same question, when the sim card is out of the phone, will that prevent the update from installing?
Also to clarify, I've already rooted my phone and installed TWRP recovery. Again at this point I just want to make sure that when I turn my phone on the update isn't going to automatically finish installing before I can block the app/files
Again, thanks so much for the help, can't wait to get a rom installed and start enjoying the awesomeness
I'd follow graydiggy suggestion. Don't turn it on except to go into download mode. Flash the mdl firmware, then root again and freeze the update apps or install a custom Rom
I could be wrong but I believe the update won't apply since the stock recovery has been replaced with a custom recovery . If I am wrong Im sure somone will come in and correct this statement .

Won't matter
If you have a custom recovery, the update should fail the install with an error 7. However, I would still completely start from scratch by using Odin to get a clean slate without an update. You could actually use Kies and do the emergency restore. Whatever you do, do not boot the phone into the OS until it has been completely wiped by either Odin or Kies. Only download mode.

boot into recovery and in twrp manually go erase the update.zip from cache/fota. Then wipe cache before rebooting. That, or flash the PIT file. I posted directions on how to extract the stock signed PIT file but you'll probably need someone to extract one for you since you dont want to boot to Android yet.

Oh yeah. TWRP has a file manager. Delete the update and then boot the OS and use Titanium Backup to delete the OTA stuff

I have compiled all my notes at: freehelpinghands.wordpress DOT com/2013/12/15/best-way-to-unlock-root-a-new-phone/
and the answer to my question above will likely be answered by the time this is being read.
Hey guys, so I tried to root and install a custom ROM, but I failed and now my phone is really messed up.
AFAIK I have I337UCUFNC1 and JSS15J.I337UCUEMK2. Not my original, I found these on this guide and have those installed. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663545
I didn't backup my original ROM as the guide I was following didn't notify me of that and kinda screwed myself over.
I basically tried to root my phone using saferoot then followed with safestrap 3.71, seemed to go well. I then went into safestrap recovery and tried to install Mapleleaf 72314, got stuck on samsung boot screen. So I tried Goldeneye XXUGNG4-37, and got the same results. I read about the ATT modules and tried again with the NC1 as that should be the one I needed. Still no avail, I tried the MK2 deadly venom tool, said it failed and then required a reinstall as it just hung on the system download menu even if I restarted.
As of now I just reinstalled the default ROM I got from a guide and can't turn on Wifi, can't download from the app store using mobile data, and who knows what else problems.
All I want is to either go back to stock working android, or have someone put it in laymans terms on how to install a custom ROM as I seem to have no luck with it. I'm still currently rooted if that helps
Thank you
