Wi-Fi Failed to connect to network. Cant fix - Networking

Hello, i have a samsung GS4 Active Intl version that is a few weeks old.
When i first bought it it was working fine but after a week or two it started to show a 'failed to connect to network' everytime i used WiFi. I know its not a router problem cause it happens with every network i try to use.
my wifi may work for a minute the first time I use it but then this happens again, and again and again.
If i turn the wifi off and on it will work for 30 secs max. But then this problem happens again. Forgetting the network wont fix it, Rebooting the phone makes it work for a while but it then stops working again.
I tried a couple apps like FXR and wifi fix but they were useless.
Couldn't find a solution and im really desperate. I dont want to restore my phone.
Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.
Thank you.

Wifi Problem
There might be a problem with your Access Point. I know on my access point I had the WPA2 Pre-Enterprise Authentication active. The wifi on my Droid 3 was in and out constantly. I disable the enterprise authentication, worked a lot better for me

Thanks but how do i do that?

Does this network use MAC-adress verification or is it connected to a wifi amplifier?

Is it on 5ghz? If so a lot of users are having issues connecting to 5ghz access points...

Are you using the stock ROM or a custom ROM?, and what version (of either)
It sounds like theres either a currupt kernel module (driver) on whatever version of android your s4 is running.. It could also be buggy power managment (wifi lock/sleep) did you try a factory reset?

i think you should see service center

try connecting your phone to a portable hotspot, if it works fine then there is no problem with the hardware and kernel, the problem might be the frequency of 5GHz, if it also gets the same problem then there is a bad news for you, yiu have to reset your phone or even in worst case you may hav have to visit srevice center as it could b a hardware problem

I solved it. I booted in safe mode and found out it was a third party app.
I just checked my apps permissions and reinstalled the ones with network access.
Finally found out it was Juice Defender. Thank Y'all for your help!

[Q] mobile network connection failed on wcdma, but works on gsm only

hey all, i've been a longtime lurker of the xda forums and always appreciated the fantastic work everyone here does. i searched the forums for this problem but saw many discontinued threads with no answer which is why I'm bringing it up (apologies if i wasn't thorough enough) .I was running the latest iced glacier rom 1.1.6, i checked that thread but found nobody with the same problem, making me think it was most likely my mistake and not a glitch in the rom. i was running wifi all day so i didn't notice until tonight that i can't connect to the mobile network when set at the "auto gsm/wcdma" and "wcdma only" setting, and only connects to "gsm only". its only when i connect to "gsm only", turn on mobile network and then go to the settings and select "auto gsm/wcdma" that it will connect me to 3g data . everything else gets me a "connection failed". I punched in the APN to no avail. I'm glad i found the way around the problem but I'd rather not have the problem at all. i did a factory reset and put the APN again to make sure, but still the same problem. does anyone have some insight into this problem and can help me? much appreciated

Hmm weird. Same thing happened to me today but it happened to me a different way. I was running CM Nightlys Build #3 and decided to do a nandroid that was from 2.x. After doing that Nandroid i ended up getting into a bootloop. So i figure okay, i'll just wipe everything and reflash CM since it was in my internal SD. Everything booted up fine but then i had no access to my data. Couldnt even connect to wifi. I then tried to go back to stock by installing the Pd5.img thats in the develop. forum and it returned me back to stock fine. Now my Wifi works but the data on my phone is still broken. I try to check and uncheck the Mobile Network and it just keeps saying Connection Failed. What do i do?

This is weird but I must live between several towers because I have a solid 2-3 bar H signal but my phone will drop to E aka edge at times and phone download speed takes a nose dive.... however if I change phone settings to connect only to wcdma the speed stays constant and super fast...
I have only noticed this happening at my home and no place else....
Anyone else ran into this?!

yes, my phone connected to data today LOL. damn that sux, i stayed up an extra 3 hours till 8am when i only usually stay up till 5am. almost made me late for work lol. data connects fine now but s is still on. maybe i'll re-root and then retry it to take it off. i need to return the phone and buy it elsewhere for cheaper.
I have been having the same problems even after changing out the phone. I believe it to be a problem with the software that runs the radio or the radio itself. It switches to different bands on it's own. I hope someone can address this with HTC or T-Mobile or both...
Why do you all quote the entire previous posts? It's obvious who you're replying to, so what's the point of that?
Anyway, I have somewhat of a similar problem, but haven't spent time trying to track the cause.. It might be related to wifi or maybe not, but at some random time after turning off my wifi, I will lose complete mobile network connectivity. No data will download or upload at all, until I reset my phone which seems to be the only way of fixing the problem.
I'm running Iced Glacier 1.1.5.1

Anyways, as far as my phone goes, its gone all day with no problem. Re rooted and restored so im 100. Never doubt that your local t mobile signal could be going through some maintenance.

Location, Mobile Networks, GSM vs WCDMA, etc.
I was about to post a new topic on this, but the nifty little Ajax monkey robot showed me this thread matched my keywords.
So I'm one of those d-bags that uses Facebook Places (Check-in). Not a lot and I don't frickin' check-in everywhere I go. I hate it when people do that. (Thanks for letting all of Facebook know you're not at home, so we can go break-in to your house.) I do use it though, as well as Yelp.
While I'm out, I'll go to check-in and it just spins its wheels - i.e. no Places load. I can be outside, clear sky and have GPS enabled and it still can't find my location. I noticed the same with Yelp, but Yelp actually errors out and tells me it cannot determine my location and prompts to go to my Location settings. Even with GPS enabled, Yelp still cannot determine my location. I noticed this here in Orlando/Longwood, FL and all the way down and through Ft. Lauderdale.
Obviously, if I enable WiFi my location can be determined instantly - e.g. Facebook Places finds it, Yelp finds it, etc. I'm not on WiFi all the time, so I don't really want to only be able to check-in at home.
I checked my APN and it has't been touched, it's at the default. I am on Ice Glacier, so I was willing to believe something could be different, but APN is correct. I also checked my stock ROM (Nandroid backup) AND my fiancee's phone, which is running stock (rooted).
I'm thinking it's got to be something to do with how my/our device(s) are registered on the network. So I look at the Network Mode and notice the default on my/my fiancee's phone is GSM/WCDMA Auto.
Just for giggles, I decided to knock it down to GSM Only. The radio restarts and then no H comes back - only Edge. I'm not just talking about the icon, I'm talking about the actual speed. Here's the cool part - once I went down to Edge (forced by being on GSM Only), guess what? Locations work perfectly now. Albeit a bit slower, but Facebook Places loads Check-ins immediately and Yelp is able to find my location now.
If I switch back to the original setting, the radio restarts, I get H back and for anywhere between a few minutes to a few hours, my location can be found. After a bit of time, I'm back to the same boat - location cannot be determined by mobile network.
I tried this on my ROM, my stock ROM and my fiancee's MT4G running stock - I can reproduce this 100% of the time.
I figured next, I'd try WCDMA Only...

To my surprise, location works perfectly now, 100% of the time. I switched to WCDMA Only last night and I have been able to use any/all apps that determine location by mobile network.
I will record a video of this, as again, it is 100% reproducible on multiple MT4G's and various ROMs. Our signal strength and network speeds in this area are amazing (Orlando/Longwood, FL). I consistently get 7-9 mbps down and never go below 6. My battery life is fantastic, as my radio is never switching between network types (note: In other cities, like in south Florida, battery can die super quickly because it's constantly jumping from Edge to H and back again).
Even better, when I use the Speedtest app, my server list no longer only has Atlanta or Washington, D.C. as my closest servers. I now have a ton of servers here in Florida, out by the coast, etc.
So there's my brain dump for now. I am not saying I have a fix, but I am saying there is definitely an issue w/ how these devices are registered on the network. I'm not saying I should be on WCDMA Only either, but I can say that in our area, my connection is perfect and now I have no issues with location via mobile network.
What the heck could the issue be? Why wouldn't the device be able to be found on the network when on GSM/WCDMA Auto? Edge does location flawlessly (when forced via GSM Only) and WCDMA Only does location flawlessly as well.
I'll do my best to record the video this weekend and show this top to bottom, but I figured I'd share what I could to see if A) this would help anyone with this issue and B) to see if anyone could shed any light on all of this.
Bump,
Did you resolve the issue? I'm having the same problem.
mine works fine on cm7 and set to GSM/WCDMA Auto. It might be the towers in the area, call TMO support and tell them your problem and your fix. They'll send a tech out there to check the tower
That's exactly what I was thinking, but I wanted to see others' opinions.
I'll let ya know what TMO says...

Yes... same issue. I have to reboot to have data network again.
I just had this happen to me for the first time as well..
Woke up this morning, unplugged the phone to see it had neither 3g or H showing in the top bar, and obviously no connection... had to reboot to get it back...
Them again about an hour our so later I was browsing and my signal kept jumping from 3G to H ... and then out of the blue they both disappeared and u lost internet...
Although this time I got it back by switching plane mode on and off..
Just 1 other thing... Is it normal for the signal to continuously move from 3G to H even if your in a full H signal area? My old desire HD just used to stay in H all the time if our could...
It never happened to me and i'm on KE7 since last week.
I'm on Orange network so I wonder if that has something to do with it as per the last firmware
Mines unbranded and unlocked... Using a t-mobile sim
I also upgraded top ke7 last week and today is the first time I've ever seen this happen..
Never in 24 days on all firmware O2 network.

late summer i think.
Can't wait for that to happen. I will turn off roaming so that it doesn't hope onto T-Mobile . See if that helps
Yeah happened to me once, I'm on Optus Australia. I thought there was something wrong with Optus or my sim/apn settings. But when I went to reboot the phone I noticed data had switched itself off.
Hasn't happened since though, been on KE7 since the day after it came out...
Hmm this is strange . This seems to happen when the phone is switched off and on again . If you check the settings by holding down the on/off button it shows as disabled.
I have also noticed that it turns itself into off mode intermittently as well .
I have turned roaming off , made no difference ... The fix is to turn it back on again but as it turns the radio off without me knowing I would not like to miss any important calls etc.
Anyone else have any ideas . I'm sure its software related as wouldn't a hardware issue be more pronounced and permanent?
I still think its network dependent can any other Orange UK users confirm if they have the same issue ?
It hasn't happen to my SGS2 yet but I'm on orange UK for over 5 years now and it happen to several times including my last phone SGS1

Generally orange 3G network the worse. Trust me. I've used O2, voda, tmob and 3. Orange boasts that they have best coverage. its true. They do.
But SIGNAL *****INTENSITY***** (POWER OF THE SIGNAL IS AT LEAST 3 TIMES SLOWER THAN VODAFONE)
this is a test between my sgs2 (orange) vs sgs (vodafone)

Wifi roaming question/problem

My wife and I both have galaxy s2's and I've set the house up with 3 wireless routers... The problem is when roaming throughout the house the phones don't want to make the jump from one router (same ssid's/settings/passwords/different channels) to another. If I turned Wifi on and I'm on the middle floor I have max signal strength... If I move upstairs and stand next to the other router my signal on the upper info bar is at its lowest.... If I look at available networks though it shows my strength at max. It's only when I shut the Wifi off for a few seconds then back on that it Connects to the strongest channel but the process will repeat again when I go downstairs. What can I do to get our phones to switch to the strongest channel automatically? This is really annoying...

Here you can see what i mean... The strength is excellent when I view the network but it's still connected to the channel for the router downstairs even when a stronger "excellent" channel is 6 inches away.

you could try using those routers as repeaters, assuming that many people wont use the wifi. Wait, how big is your house? And do you really need three?
my house is about 2000 square feet but I live in japan where typhoon proof houses have 18inch thick rebar and concrete walls and floors...I have 3 routers, one on each floor wired with cat6 through conduits in the walls. Each router is on a separate channel (1,6,11) and they all work flawlessly as long as I shut the wifi off for several seconds. I just think its strange that the pic in post two shows that the closer router can be seen but its choosing not to switch in favor of the one that it originally connected to even though there is next to no signal.
You're not alone - Galaxy S2 wifi roaming isn't working
Wifi roaming isn't working on my S2 running 2.3.4 (stock Samsung firmware).
Looks like it's the same for others. Google:
"Issue 12649: WIFI roaming not working."
"you tube Hh2XXi4LQ1c"
(I'm not allowed to post links yet )
Waiting for ICS I guess.
It would be nice for galaxy s plus to get working wifi roaming.
I have the same issue on a Samsung Infuse running GB 2.3.6. Only way roaming works for me is brute force - either manually disable/reenable WiFi, or get far enough away from connected WAP that the connection drops. After either, a scan typically picks up the closest router.
I work in a building with a dozen or so APs, so a working roaming config would be very helpful.
Roaming roaming roaming
I use 2 APs that act as Bridge repeaters for my Sky broadband.
I cannot roam between them.
If I disable and enable wireless, the preferred access point is the last one connected, not the strongest signal. The only time I automatically get transferred to another AP is if the original is out of range.
Has anyone tried roaming with the new ICS official ROMs? Does this work?
Will upgrading my Modem to the latest version for Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100) help this?
Any answers to these questions would help greatly.

The problem is with NRJ 94,3 station (48k MP3) and CBC one radio Montreal (48k MP3)
With these station I have a incontinuous stream input with spike with interruption.

Hey Guys,
I'm currently on the Nexus 5 Experience Stock Kernel - Release 2.4.1 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545838, I've tried flashing other kernels such as Francos and a few others but my issue is still around...
Basically the phone can't keep an active connection for long at all, I could be sending messages over whatsapp and it doesn't appear to send but then suddenly It shows that it's sent and the other person has replied...
Loading webpages can take several attempts, refreshing facebook can take several attempts and occasionaly when I look at the tiles the wifi tile is different color (reconnecting to the router) but the wifi in my place is very stable, fast and should work fine... I switched back to Paranoid Android for a test and the wifi works fine on it...
My wifi is awful on all of the 4.4 ROMS, anyone know why and anyone know how to debug and fix?
Thanks

I flashed that before it did nothing, I also tried someone else version (had different modified lines)
In that case the only way to fix that is change the kernel or the entire rom...
But wait for "insider" users, did you reported in the rom topic?

I've tried over 10 kernels, over 10 ROMS including 100% stock and even tried different radios / bootloaders but the only thing working for me is 4.3 and lower...
It couldn't be a router setting could it?

Anyone got any ideas about this?
I've tried changing the wifi band to 2.4 and change the region code to Europe, tried wifi optimization on and off but still it's awful
Do you have similar performance issues with other wireless devices when using your router? If so then it likely is a router problem. Does your router have an 'auto' mode for channel or is there a reason you're using 6.

The wireless works perfectly on laptops, other phones (Samsung S2, HTC Desire Z...etc), I'm using channel 6 as in the other part of the house the wireless there uses Channel 1 and the garden uses channel 11, (odd shaped house means parts of the house wouldn't get wireless if I ran them through one router)
I can try changing them all to auto but I doubt it will make a difference.

All three on auto and still the same issues, turned two of the extenders off and just ran it like a normal setup and again the same issues
Anyone else got any ideas?
Tried another ten roms with and without custom kernels, all give Me the same problem
Wi fi issues!
The same things you described also apply to my case!! I expected that new radio or kit kat kernel would solve wifi issues of my nexus 4 but nothing. I have tested also various kernels-roms-fixes but the result is always the same. I compared every new configuration with my nexus 7 2013 and it feels disappointing!!! wifi speed 1.5Mbps for Nexus 4 10.5Mbps for Nexus 7! The only thing I have noticed is that I can achieve 10Mbps also with nexus 4 when I change small settings such as set to 2.4Ghz channel and disable wifi battery optimization.. Speed is improved instantly up to 10Mbps but it works only for some minutes. After that it is the same bad speed / bad signal reception / weird behaviors among different routers!! nothing of these happen with samsung phones!!
Almost bad signal reception also applies to my Nexus 7 2013 depending on the router!! I am very dissapointed with nexus devices! I bought them mainly due to the fact that google used to support its products.
