I thought I just throw it out here since there are so many people complain about how bad touchwiz is.
What do you like about TouchWiz interface on Galaxy S?
One thing I really like is how music players stack up onto the pull down taskbar as well as on the lock screen where you can stop, change track and play your musics without unlocking your phone.
I only like the lock screen missed call or missed sms notification.
Other than that it's crap.
I use adw for everything else.

is there any way to change it to something better without rooting or anything like that?

Sliding across the notifications bar to adjust brightness.
The Touchwiz Corporate Email client is MUCH better than stock Android. Much.
The Notification panel is the best stock panel on Android, and nothing aftermarket even comes close.
The stock Clock application has a great "Smart Alarm".
Task Manager, which is just a long-press of the Home button away.
Built in "My Files" application, no need to download something like Astro.
Memo and Mini Diary are quite useful.
Very solid SNS integration into Contacts, complete with pictures.
A pretty damned good stock dialer.
A pretty good stock keyboard (and Swype too!)
The best stock Music Player IMHO. Equalizer presets!
The best stock Video Player, bar none. Divx, MKV, AVI, it plays them all.
AllShare actually works, and is actually useful and fun.
Ability to change system fonts on the fly, and to download or create your own.
Road SMS just for ****s and giggles.
Integrated Calendar (Exchange, Google, etc.)
Car Home and Desk Home launchers are nice.
How friendly TW3.0 is to 3rd party launchers.
I'm sure there's more, but the long and short of it is, TouchWiz 3.0 is pretty damned good. I don't use the TWLauncher either, but most of that is habit, having used ADW and LauncherPro for months.

I love TW3.0 I've tried all other launchers and they dont really compare to the functionality that TW3.0 offers altho most of the launchers are just home screen and application drawer replacements.
My only gripe is that samsung should have added a msg counter on the messaging icon like on the wave... everything else is great for me!
Nothing of these things have to do with touchwiz. Im on launcher pro and can do the same. The only thing missing are the samsung widgets.
Ps. On launcher pro you get msg and call counter in the dock icons

What i like in TW3.0 is that apps are divided to pages. I don't like scrolling, scrolling and scrolling to find my apps in other launchers. I know on which page i have app that i need right now so i jump quickly there and launch it.
I tried ADW Launcher and LauncherPro but don´t like them. They feel a lot more incomplete and slower compared to TW3. I can´t complain about the speed of TW3 and i really like the the Screenlock, and the notifications for missed calls and sms
Twlauncher isn't the only part of the phone that's changed by TouchWiz, as listed above.
I also use LauncherPro, mainly because I prefer its vertical sliding application list, but the notification icons and integration with media players is nice. I have no argument with the lock screen either - again, the music player integration is useful. The Task Manager in newer builds is also pretty decent and good to see in a stock ROM.
The TouchWiz customisations you can't remove/bypass are pretty good, and because you can change default handlers in Android, it's no big deal to use alternative launchers and applications. I was concerned about not having HTC Sense, but happy with this.
I currently switched from LauncherPro to TouchWiz recently, just because I like variation. I might use ADW instead next week. There's nothing bad about TouchWiz to make me not use it. Nice to see other people supporting the stock software.
TouchWiz 3.0 is Good!!
I am not sure why there is so much of TouchWiz hate. But once one would come out of the "only Sense/ADW is good", they would really see what all functionalities have been added to TouchWiz to make it look good and actually work well.
I really like it.
And I really wonder if Sense can do this much!!

This works on Launcher Pro too, it's not unique to TW

Just download an alternative like Launcher Pro or ADW and Home Switcher to easily switch between them.

That's just an application, irrespective of the launcher. Switch launcher and that is still there.

Agreed!
I like certain aspect of TW, sort of like the horizontal scroll applications page but wish there was a way to reorder things alphabetically without clearing the data. Manually sorting applications according to type etc. is useful but then sort of duplicates what the home screens are for. Like the icon display on TW as well with their button backgrounds as opposed to plain icons in Launcher Pro.
I think touchwiz is pretty good, one cool feature is sliding your finger left or right on a contact either calls them or composes s message! Until someone ports Sense to the SGS ill stick to touchwiz

I don't "like" touchwiz, but don't hate it either. The widgets that come with it are pretty cool. I like the people(social networking) and the yahoo finance widgets in particular.

That is a feature of the contacts manager, not Touch Wiz. It works the same under a different launcher.
No greyish pull up tab underneath? Never liked that bit.

I agree with you, but what do you mean by this? How do you adjust the brightness from the notifications bar?
This is probably some new addition like the task manager, right? I'm still using the JF3-firmware...
Think the touchwiz is pretty well thought out. I actually like it better then Sense tbh even though I figured I would miss sense after switchin to the sgs.

I love touchwiz that when I slide, if I touched the app icons first for like 0.2 sec and slide, it will still give me a slide.
If I do it on ADW or LauncherPro, it will act like I'm holding that icon. Like I hold icons from drawer to place at home screen.
I don't know how to explain this, my english is not very good. Hope you understand.
My wife has a "dumb" phone, but honestly as far as usability it's pretty great, and this is a feature I'd love to see on android phones:
Is it possible for a Launcher/Home app to have 2 remembered configurations for widgets, and for it to remember them and toggle between them by autosensing it's position?
So Example:
Is it possible that in portrait mode, your phone shows a dialer widget on your homescreen. When you turn the phone to landscape mode, the homescreen shows an SMS widget INSTEAD of the dialer widget. When you turn the phone back to portrait, the widget gets switched back to the dialer widget?
I think that as far as usability, that'd be awesome!
Never saw anything like that on Android.
But yes, I assume that is possible. I guess Apps have access to accelerometer and it wouldn't even need root.
Thanks!
I think it'd be awesome. As great and versatile as our phones are, let's be honest; they're phones. I think it'd be great if all you had to do was unlock your phone, and voila: you're greeted with a dialer widget (which already exist BTW). Don't need to make a phone call? No problem, but turn the phone into landscape mode (b/c let's be honest, most of us probably send SMS in landscape mode) and AGAIN Voila! there's a texting widget instead of the dialer widget (which I think also exist). The only thing to implement would be the "autosensing". If a Launcher like LPP or GO Launcher would implement something like that... it'd be money!
You could implement it on the widget itself so it works on any launcher.
Yes, it's certainly possible.
You'd have to save 2 sets of widgets and then code a listener to check whether the phone's in portrait or landscape and load the correct one.
Saying that, it's beyond my coding abilities, but i'm sure someone could do it
It is not only possible, but, from what I can tell, quite easy
all you would need to do is set up an OrientationEventListener
and then create a OnOrientationChanged method that would well.. change what is displayed
I'm not sure if it would be possible for do without using a different launcher but I'm sure it could be incorporated into something like launcherpro or adw launcher.
I might look into creating a widget that switches from phone to sms
that would be pretty cool
I'll let you know if I get anywhere with it
+1
Good idea! I hope someone could do it. That would be awesome.
Tasker is the answer!
I have Tasker and have done an almost identical thing. Create a Task which senses the orientation is portrait mode to change a shortcut on the homescreen to link to the phone dialler app. Have another task which changes the shortcut to the sms app if its in landscape mode.
Should be relatively simple.
Tasker is about £3 so a little more than most apps but is so configurable should pay for itself as it can replace a lot of other apps I have used.
Dear all,
In landscape mode, the home button in on the right. When I try to swipe from right for any thing (to use feature as switch tabs in Chrome), instead of the expected result, Google now is launched. How to cope with this? There are some threads for disabling google now but they wont work (disabling google now does not override the swipe to launch google). I am using Nova launcher, but I guess this is also the behavior of stock launcher. Thanks!

Try using a different launcher, I used Nova for awhile but found that it was just a little unfinished and ran into a lot of complications like this. Try switching to APEX launcher its alot cleaner and if you spend some time getting everything set up it can really maximize efficiency.

Thanks, but I'm not inclined to using Apex, Nova can provide me quite similar looks (with enhanced features off course) as stock launcher, and that's what I want.
Are you using a custom Rom? Maybe something like paranoidandroid with extended desktop pie control would help decrease this problem?

Can anybody tell me a landscape rotation app that is compatible with the note 3 touchwiz. Because in home screen when in forced landscape mode using apps from playstore, the proportion is bugged.

Oh thank gawd! I'm not the only one! I too am having this issue (tmus) and posted that question today there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2590080
Basically I was using "Ultimate Rotation Control" and it works great on all my previous galaxies but on the Note 3 it looks like the icon and widgets are trying to stay in a forced portrait mode. However my background image looks fine, go figure.
However you can change your launcher to GoLauncher and that should work for you just fine. I prefer GoLauncher myself because it has a calendar widget that none of the other launchers seem to have.
Hopefully the makers of URC fix their app because its not working now.
Not to my knowledge.
If you change to Apex, Nova or another launcher, though, you'll have that as an option amongst plenty of others... Not to mention less resource usages.
Do you use S8 Samsung experience or different launcher? if you use different launcher, which one? and why?
I've always used Nova. Has way more customization settings and I can mix and match different icon packs. The stock galaxy launcher just doesn't compete.
It looks like I am getting older, as on the S8 I do not use Nova, which I used since the days of HTC Sensation.
Using nova, love it. Can do a few of the things i lost without root & xposed.
Use nova now as with a few others my delete shorcut button when you hold your finger on an icon had stopped working.
Using Nova on every smartphone. Stock ones doesn't fit my needs.
I use Nova also. Stock launchers have too little options to customize.
I like stock. It has some functionality that Nova doesnt have (like multiple app cards even if they are not full, i.e. you can have a an app card for just one app if u want.) and ability to move any app icon anywhere. Nova is alphabetical only, and forces you to have folders at the very top.
I still use nova though.
Nova it is.
Nova prime on my every device
I have been using ActionLauncher3 for a few years and see myself continuing to use it for the foreseeable future.
I used Nova (Prime) on my S5, S6, and S7, but with the S8, I'm using the stock launcher. The reason I hated Touchwiz before was that the app drawer button couldn't be moved, but the new swipe up app drawer gesture on the S8 works for me.
holy jesus nova is popular for no reason, like its a stock launcher that you can change the icons on
I use lawn-chair from here https://github.com/deletescape-media/lawnchair
Open source and pretty good
i used Evie Launcher seems cool
I was using nova for a long time, but since s8 I'm staying with touchwiz, now I'm using modded touchwiz, it had some some features i was missing from nova like double tap to sleep, and has everything I need.
Pixel Launcher or TouchWiz

I don't think you have a clue what Nova can actually do. Looks are deceiving. It still is one of the most powerful feature wise.

except you can easily remap gestures on the screen (with prime), customize notification labels (tesla), completely change look and feel of homescreen/app drawer/dock, add multiple dock pages, change margins, persistant search bar, overlap widgets, add folders to app drawer, stick dock to the top, backup settings and import on different devices. did i forgot something?
i think you are right, theres no reason for it to be popular, it's like a stock launcher.
