[Q] How to Get Official Updates via OTA/Kies - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I got confused after reading a lot of posts and threads about the subject, because each one says something a little different.
A little background:
I bought a new Galaxy S4 GT-I9505, it comes with android 4.2.2 and I wanted to update it to the new 4.3.
But when I try to update via the software update in the phone, I get "The latest updates have already been installed", and when I try to update via Kies I get "Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies".

My phone version is:
PDA: I9505XXUBMG7
Phone: I9505XXUAMDC
CSC: I9505EVRBMF5
Now, after reading about it I still don't understand why I can't get official updates, but I think it's either of the following:
1. My CSC and PDA do not match.
2. I changed my CSC to something different than the original.
I don't know which one of the above is true.
Anyway, I don't understand how this can happen if I bought a NEW phone?!
If 1 is true then:
1. What does that mean? What should match?
2. How come I get a new phone with CSC and PDA that do not match?
3. How can I get them to match so I can get official updates?
If 2 is true then:
4. This is a new phone, so how come this isn't the original CSC?
5. How can I know what the original CSC is?
6. What should I do to get the correct CSC (and get official updates)?
I would very appreciate if you try to help me.
I really want to finally understand the CSC and PDA stuff and get myself to have official updates via OTA/Kies.
Thank you in advance for helping.

[Q] Can't Update Firmware

Hi everyone,
I struggles for some time to make Kies recognize my phone; it still fails on my Windows 7 64-bit though, but at least it works on XP.
The most important reason for me to use Kies is to get the latest official update from Samsung (I'm still using I9000JXJF1). Unfortunately when I went to Firmware Upgrade section it gave me the following message:
Code:
Model Name: GT-I9000
Current Version: PDA:JF4 / PHONE:JF1
This device's version cannot be updated.
I really want to update to the latest official update as I heard it speeds things up and I started to face some lags from time to time. I don't want to reach the point when everything I run needs few seconds to start or the phone becomes not instantly responsive (the responsiveness was a major factor in my decision to buy it)
Thanks in advance
P.S.: I don't know if it's helpful, but here are my firmware files versions:
PDA: I9000JPJF4
PHONE: I9000JXJF1
CSC: I9000OJPJF4
You can use Odin to upgrade the firmware, it is an easy process.
I'm sure there are some threads already on it with step by step instructions. You can choose there which firmware you wish to upgrade to. I would go with jg5 personally.
I'm quite new to Android and newer to updating flashing stuff, so there are very little details that I know about the process, all from what I read here in this forum.
Anyway, the problem is I bought my phone here in UAE and it came with Arabic support (reading and writing) and I don't want to lose that when upgrading to new firmware, also I'm not really welling to try any custom ROM/firmware or anything, that's the reason why I wanted an official upgrade.
I don't know where to get these information from, but if I can get an official firmware release and make sure I retain the Arabic support, then I don't mind using Odin or any other tool to upgrade my phone.
Thanks.

Official ROM availibility question + differences [SGS II]

Yesterday I've updated mu phone soft, but the newest version KIES found was i9100XXKE4 - looks like it's not the newest one (should be WEK4, dated on 25.05.2011). Does anyone know why KIES didn't show newer version and when it will be availible for my phone?
Best Regards, Jack

When the phone provider or network upgrade the firmware you get the upgrade from Kies . Phones product code determines the firmware .

I know it, but from what I know my phones wasn't from any phone carrier, it's a stock one, bought in a shop. Is it any way to determine is it stock phone (by serial number, by rom number) or bought from the carrier (mayby I'm wrong about it's origin)...
Answer is because KE4 is the latest available Polish firmware.
Ok, that should be an answer. But the question is, how long do You think it take Samsung to make latest rom availible for Poland?

Unknown... Nobody knows. TBH I'd use the standard "UK" or Europe one that is updated fastest on...
Ok, but how, if the KIES don't see any newer ones? If I change language in the phone, will it work? Are there any other options, that are recognized by KIES to determine my location, thus blocking newest software update? Some time ago I used KIES Registry editor when wanted to update my wife's Samsung Wave (S8500) to bada 1.2, but it was differernt (older) KIES and different system (bada).
Kies takes Product Code and a few other codes matches them to that specific firmware on the server for those codes .
I have never ever on SGS 1 or 2 managed to update firmware via Kies once stock rom flashed .

From the linked threat I can confirm, that my phone was unbranded - I had XKE2 and could update only to KE4. Looks like there is nothing more for me to do except: waiting for update via KIES or risk update by Odin. Tough choice for me...

Help me to put original FW

Hello,
First of all, sorry for my poor english.
Ok, so i have an galaxy s with:

I have tried to put I9000XFJP9 form samfirmware but:

Now, i have XFJS4, but i want back my initial FW.
What can i do? why nobody have I9000OXFJPB. I have find I9000OXFJP6, but it is not the same.

Nobody has because like you nobody saved a copy .
You can try an older version of your FW and update via Kies
Or you can try the spoof fw thread/app

Just use Odin to flash the original 2.3 including bootloaders. Then you will have the most recent version, and original.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881
That will do.
Thank you JJEgan
it was a greate ideea to use SpoofFW, but i have tried to put:
PDA: I9000XFJP7
PHONE: I9000XXJPP
CSC: I9000OXFJPB
to made update to I9000XFJP9, but kies don't want to (this version of the device ...). So, i must find the older FW of my phone but i don't know it. What can i do to trick Kies to reinstall my firmware (after i use SpoofFW)

[Q] 4.3 i9500 Firmware I9500UBUEMJ5 (NEW)

Has anyone tried flashing the new 4.3 I9500UBUEMJ5 (i9500) firmware?
I currently have my i9500 (I9500XXUEMJ5) rooted, but I noticed SamMobile uploaded a new firmware I9500UBUEMJ5 with a higher changelist 1882417 compared to 1875800 of my current firmware.
Just seeing if anyone has done it and if they have, do you see anything new that's worth upgrading via PC ODIN.
Thanks

Yeah I saw that, I don't know why they listed it as Unknown, every other firmware has a location. But let me know what you see.
Thanks
I grabbbed the Russian one when it came out, and it seems fine.
A few odd russian apps in there, but otherwise fucntional, would love to know what this unknown one is though!
Anyone has tried the unknown country firmware yet? Btw, do i need to do a factory reset if i decide to update my GS4?

OTA Upgrade Question

I understand that if i put a custom rom on even another stock firmware for another region other than what my phone came with i won't get OTA updates.
That i understand. I was wondering though how does it know that its not the firmware that came with the phone.
For example if i put BTU on my carrier branded S5 it won't update but how does it know thats not what it came with. What is not changing when it gets flashed.
Is it based on IMEI or is there another parameter that does not get changed when flashing another firmware.
Thanks for your help guys i like to really understand whats going on.
anyone any thoughts

I don't know how it works exactly, but here is one of possible ways:
Samsung stores the device's S/N and the initial CSC in its database.
(You can check that by using Kies 3 software > Tools > Firmware Upgrade and Initialization, enter your S/N and Kies 3 will show your initial CSC).
That way, when you perform an OTA update, Samsung will know if your current CSC is the same as your initial CSC or not.
