it costs $215 to manufacture, there will be a bit more in distribution and software.

that's a resounding yes from me
I saw this earlier and I understand the obscene profit margins are commonplace so I have disregarded it. I think it should have been cheaper definitely. I feel if someone is just in the market for a tablet and isn't really into Android it wouldn't get a second look as it doesn't have any SUPER AMAZING BLEEDING EDGE killer functions to take the shine off the iPad and I don't think it offers enough new things to appeal to a lot of hardcore android followers. Galaxy S having problems certainly hasn't helped.
Market share = excellent hardware + near enough faultless software + 20% lower than apple product
They should have thrown in the Keyboard at this price and maybe Co-Pilot or something
I think the Tab is a LITTLE overpriced, but not monstrously.
The best way to assess this matter is to compare it to its contemporaries, such as the iPad. Now, I won't go in to a full comparison here, but I wil simply say that the Tab does more than the iPad, and yet costs about as much as one.
Not too shabby
I think it should be $100 cheaper ($400 wifi, $500 3G).
But considering the current state of competition, it's no surprise they are charging as much as they are.
Why don't you make is possible to vote for this?
I really don't think it's overpriced. It's a bit cheaper than its immediate rival, the 3G+WiFi iPad, and around here at least, that puts it right in the same ballpark as most of the other newer higher end phones.
The Tab goes for between 900 and 1100$ here in Switzerland, which is almost identical to the prices of the various iPhone 4 models. Galaxy S goes for a bit less (around 100$ less in most places). Considering that the Tab is clearly the most attractive of the available devices, being near the top of the price scale seems justified.
Btw, if google is to be trusted in this matter, it seems the manufactoring costs for the iPhone 4 are around 180$. Again, seems to be comparable.
for it is cheap here in indonesia.. only about us$700 50$ cheaper than galaxy s and 100$ expensiver than iphone4
I got my tab for 650 euros. Similar ipad is 600.
It IS slightly too expensive, but the raw materials cost breakdown doesn't tell the whole story, you also have to consider
R&D
Internal Testing
Manufacturing
Shipping
Support
Local Taxes
Plus a healthy profit (we all want to make some money).
Considering all that, plus that I am happy to support Android vs Apple, I find it slightly too expensive, but not enough to make me change my mind.
Overpriced? Yes. Awesomeley awesome? Also yes.
But it really is a well-built, svelte device i would much rather carry with me than an ipad. Since i take my laptop (timelinex 3820tg) almost everywhere anyway, why would i want a device of similar size?
When the second gen tegra tablets arrive i will certaily get a 10 inch device to have at home. To play with in front of the telly or read papers on the loo. But for now this is the best mobile slate on the market, and i have no reservations about dishing out the $1200 they cost here in russia.
So good is the tab that i have even convinced a hardcore iphoney friend of mine to get one instead of an ipad. Hes over the moon with joy.
In Thailand a 16 GB version is the same price as the Samsung Galaxy S $772.6046 US.
If it was $500 US I would pick one up as soon as it was back in stock, But it seams there is high demand here so why not get as much as you can for you product while you can. We all know there will be a flood of Android devices soon then they will be a dime a dozen just like the apple I phone 3 is here now.
I find it slightly suspicious that iSuppli has decided it costs ~$10 to put the Tab together but hasn't quoted manufacturing costs in the past for other devices, just the price of components.
So, with that in mind, I'm going to base what I say purely on the estimated cost of parts.
So on top of that ~$205 value (which is in itself a rough estimate and may not be accurate), there's the cost of putting it together, distributing it, marketing it, R&D for both hardware and software and then a profit margin because, lets face it, Samsung are not a charity.
And that's just before we reach the price that Samsung are selling it on for, there's a whole extra layer of distribution and marketing costs for individual retailers plus their profit margin as well plus the possibility that there's a distributor between Samsung and the retailer, who will have their own costs and profit margin to add on too.
Comparing the cost of the parts to what we pay is a waste of time.
Comparing the value of the parts and the price we pay to other devices is a slightly better way of rating a product's value - the parts are worth more than the iPhone's but the Tab (here in the UK at least) costs about the same as the 16GB iPhone4 and less than the 32GB one.
What I will say though is that the plans being offered by UK networks for the Tab are a rip-off but that's a separate matter.
Picked up my Tab yesterday from PC World for £499 without contract/SIM, and that's bang on the price point I expected it to ship at. If you view the Tab as essentially a cell phone with a larger screen and battery, I'd say at that price point it comes in pretty favourably when compared to similar cell phones (e.g. Galaxy S, Desire HD etc).
I do love it when you get these teardowns that supposedly calculate the "cost" of a product, but in reality all this is the bill of materials, and fails to take into account everything else involved in designing, developing, sourcing, manufacturing, advertising, distributing, retailing, and supporting a product!
Make no mistake, Samsung will have to sell an awful lot of these to actually turn a profit on the line.
Regards,
Dave
I bought mine from Currys (which is a sister company to PC-World, both owned by Dixons Plc.). It cost 499 GBP/£ with a free voice/data SIM card (and dongle, in my case) on a rolling contract (15 GBP/month, but can be deactivated and restarted at any time). It's expensive, but on a par with other high-end smartphones and tablets.
I will try the 10" Advent Vega tablet when it comes out on November 18 (250 GBP Tegra 2 device), but to be honest I am really pleased with the 7" form factor, which manages to be pocketable whilst offering a touch experience that doesn't hurt my eyes after 10 minutes (unlike small mobile phone displays).
A note about the Galaxy Tab display: there are mixed reviews, some say the view angles, color saturation and crispness are great, others the contrary (they even say there is ghosting due to the slow refresh rate). I think both camps are right: this is clearly not the best display on the touch market (the IPS screen on the iPhone / iPad just looks awesome !), but conversely it is clearly amongst the better ones. The Android firmware offers settings in the configuration panel to adjust the white/black balance and saturation. The manual brightness adjustment also needs to be used to get the best results depending on the environment. As for ghosting: yeah, the fonts sometimes look a little jagged when scrolling screens, but it's really not a big deal at all (it's not perceivable with most apps, to be honest).
I bought mine from currys.co.uk @ £499 through quidco so got a voucher for £25 off plus 3% cashback. So totally I paid £464.
However I still think its a bit (not much) too expensive. If Samsumg could have sold it @ £399 - £429 it would be perceived as much more value for money by the masses. I totally agree with previous poster about the UK networks overcharging for the Tab. Total cost of ownership over a 2yr contract totalling over £1k is taking the piss.
Now for me the Tab ticks all the boxes so even @ £499 I'd still buy it. One complaint I have is that Samsung could have at least thrown in some sort of protective case even it was one of those cheap neoprene type ones.

That's the networks.
They'll happily subsidise a ~£500 phone down to nothing up-front on a £30-35/month 24 months contract, so why should a tablet cost so much more?
Depends how we look at it...
When my SGS was released, the cheapest I could find for 16gb version was £530
So placing it within the mobile market, which they have done, gives it quite an attractive price point at £500.
However, I was expecting, and still expect to see tablets placed within the laptop market at half the price of this.
i will also pay $1000+ for the rumored galaxy tab 2, especially if it has amoled tech
I currently own the HTC HD2 it cost me £499 but I brought the Samsung Galaxy tab because I am so disappointed with Microsoft’s market place. The tab cost me £475 to buy SIM free. It is an amazing product the screen is bright and big enough to use in all types of environments. I am still finding my way around the product having used only windows mobile phones but Android is easier to use.
The Android market place is fantastic lots of free software to try; I have downloaded several and removed them without crashing the operating system.
The price of Samsung Galaxy Tab is value for money when comparing it with the IPAD and my HTC HD 2 because I now only carry one device instead of two.
I think they priced it as they did so that when they release the next version they can keep the price the same but add SAMOLED, more RAM, and more internal storage...making it a relative bargain.
The price does seem a little high for the current iteration, but it will still sell well because it is a capable device that offers an open approach to media.
peer pressure
If the iphone and other high end phones cost around £500 there is no way they can price a quality item as the tab below those so early.
sadly that is how the market works
Further update: date now uncertain, may be early November, may slip back towards initial mid-November date.
FFS! 495 Gbp to euro + taxes = +/- 700€ in my country... thats almost 2x the minimum wage / salary.
Too damn expensive.
I have to agree. And we all know that there'll be an even better phone
released, less than a year later, and we'll all want that one too...
£478.99 exc VAT on 31st October at Handtech
If this phone follows the trend, there should be a big price drop in 3 - 4 months. I can wait.
This phone will be awesome. I have tablets, but I still do most of my news reading on my current 4" screen LG G2X phone. I don't know why Samsung had to market this for women. Anyways, the 1.4ghz dual core and battery capacity is probably one of the best in the whole phone industry right now.
Com'on US release...
I don't really understand why you looking for prize drops. In 4 month there is something else you want and you have to wait again Do you ever buy phones?
lol, that's why I still have an HD2 right now. In 4 months, there might be an even bigger phone than the note.

release now looking like mid November (hopefully)
Clove Uk has revised their release date to "to be confirmed" from stock expected about November 1. Clove "hopes" to ship mid November. They are waiting for Samsung to tell them when they will have the product delivered to their warehouse. It is very possible phone will be delayed so it can ship with Ice Cream on board (rumor.)
The price of a smartphone (Galaxy SII) bought outright (unlocked, expensive than phone price on contract) which includes tax and gst here in Australia is roughly 425 GBP.
At 425 GBP, the SGNote is NOT CHEAP, but I would buy it in a heartbeat, but not a penny more. The baseline for smartphone outright price has been 400-450GBP in Australia for sometime, I think its unfair to exceed that.

I'm so torn between the Note and the Nexus.
At the moment I've preordered the Nexus but I dont know... I would realy like the bigger screen and the sd-card slot on the Note.
Might end up with both...
EDIT:
And now I've both preordered. Think I'll go for the Note. I just hope that it will get ICS fast.
EDIT2:
Leaning towards getting both now =) So my wife get a shiny new phone to (but the sgs2 she have now is not to bad either)
Gonna try them both out and then I'll take the one i like most and my wife get the reject

LOL i am in the same boat as you
The Nexus is nice but I'm majorly swayed by the screen size on the Note and the stylus input.
I think most people looking at both nexus and note, Had both pre-ordered but cancelled the nexus. Only NFC and ICS missing on the note. I dont need NFC for three to five years. (might be payment method world wide). but who knows? ICS, i still think we will see that on the note sometime next year...
Brilliant short clip showing how good the Note is for video editing and annotation. This is one awesome tablet phone.

Ooh, thanks for that - nice!
Normally a few months after the initial surge of interest in a product dies down, the price tends to drop a little. However for some reason the Note 10.1 2014 seems to be going up if anything here in the UK, although in the States it does appear to be dropping.
The US price is now generally around $499 (plus tax) for the wi-fi model, while the UK price has gone up from under £400 a few months ago (£365 at John Lewis I gather) to nearer £450 most places.
Does anyone know what's going on, have Samsung UK increased their suggested price or something?

When I saw the UK prices, it really baulked me.
I wanted a tablet that not only worked on Wi-Fi, but 3G, 4G/LTE, but I couldn't get one, especially a 32Gb model, which I consider to be the basement model (I wouldn't even consider a 16Gb).
I nearly paid the extra for an Ipad, however I decided to do more research and in the end I imported one from HK and even when I paid the VAT on it, it came in significantly cheaper than some of the prices of the 16Gb, Wi-Fi model.
It's worth doing a little extra research and importing it yourself and get a better specified machine, at a lower price.
I could pick one up in the States next time I'm over there, but I'm a little wary of not having a proper international warranty as that caught me out once (thanks Samsung, so much for global corporations!).
16GB actually doesn't worry me as long as it has an SD card slot, much cheaper to put 64GB onto it that way than pay for a bigger base model. Well, upcoming stock KitKat stupidities notwithstanding anyway, but that won't be hard to fix.

Why buy a 16Gb one? You can get the 32Gb version quite easily over there, but the currency conversion made it more expensive to buy it from the US, also I used PayPal to pay for it, so I had a bit of protection too.
My SM-P605 has a 64Gb card in and I'm already running low on memory, so I only hope that the new SanDisk 128Gb card comes out soon at a reasonable price.
I think a few places had them on offer just before and after christmas. Got mine from John Lewis for £399 in mid jan, took ages to find somewhere with one in stock at that price. There were quite a few places charging (or trying to) over £500! I think about £450 was the average book price but so many places were out of stock, or were trying to sell the old one still at £399........
They want to sell the new Tab 10.1 at such a high price, that they had to raise that of the note, to keep people from going straight for a note instead.
Let's be honest. Samsung charging iPad+ prices for the Pro/Note series takes balls of steel. Android tablets are bought typically by bargain seekers unwilling to pay iPad prices and are typically 7-8" and under $250. One thing iPads have always provided was a certain cache and snob appeal; everyone knows what everyone else paid. With the Pro/Note's Samsung seems to be raising the snob appeal. With the 16GB iPad Air at 399 GBP whether Samsung prices at 375 GBP or 425 GBP it's still close enough that if people really considered a high-end Android tablet as an iPad alternative they'd still buy it. I don't think someone predisposed to an iPad would say "I'll buy the Samsung Tab|Pro because I'll save 50 GBP." How many people think a high-end Android tablet is an iPad alternative is a whole different discussion and will be proven by the success (or failure) of Samsung's strategy in offering the Pro/Note series in the first place.
The G-Tab 4 certainly is a step down in design and specs so perhaps Samsung's strategy is to make the 4's their volume seller (EG: BMW 3-series) and the Pro/Note's their margin leader (EG: BMW 7-series).
Apparently the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 will pack a 10.6″ (odd, right?) display of 1280×800 pixels resolution and will run on Snapdragon 400 chipset with a quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A7 processor, Adreno 305 GPU and 1.5GB of RAM. Other revealed specs are the 3MP rear and the 1.2MP front camera, 16GB internal storage (12GB actually available) and the latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS. Digging into the GFX Benchmark database you can also find the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0. It has absolutely the same specs but less screen estate.

And gave up your 2 year UK warranty in the process. Or you can ship it round trip to HK at your expense to have warranty repairs done there. Does Samsung UK even service grey market devices for a fee? Samsung U.S. won't. I had to ship my UK-purchased i9100 back to the UK for a cracked bezel. Caveat Emptor.
The guy I bought it from is a dealer. He will sort any warranty issues and is in the UK. I spoke to him before I bought it.

I am still interested in this tablet but the price in India is completely ridiculous, around 47000 (almost $800) for the 32 GB 3G version. I thought Samsung might lower it over time but the price hasn't budged in 9 months.
I am interested in the 16GB Wifi version which seems to be available for around $350 refurbished on Amazon. I was wondering if any Indian posters have ordered it through them and what the final price is after shipping, taxes etc.
Online / store price the best that I have seen is INR 45,500...
But I agree on both counts
1. Price has certainly proved resistant to lowering
2. Its expensive (currently picked up an ipad air 16 gb for 36k at amazon india)
Have not ordered this from US as I will prefer to buy it local because
1. Warranty and repair service - god forbid something goes wrong with the tablet, doubt samsung would honor the warranty of another country and am not confident on the situation of parts and all for a model not sold here locally...service in India stinks!
2. Custom duties - we have some crazy custom duties typicall plus add the cost of shipping and chances are whatever savings in the price you get will be nullified by the cost of having it delivered in your hands.
Me, even if I could accept the second.l, cannot accept the first as I don't want to end up with an expensive paper weight.
Purely my own thoughts, yours may of course vary.

I agree with your points which is why I wondered if anyone had any personal experience of ordering from India especially with respect to point 2. If the savings are sufficient I would be prepared to risk the lack of warranty.
Samsung has really missed the boat with pricing on this tablet. They could have easily launched the 16GB wifi version for 35. And it's baffling that they have refused to reduce the price. The Note 3 which was released at the same time is now 38 and the GS5 which was released 6 months later is 35. Hopefully once they launch the newer version, the price on the 2014 will drop sharply.
i just received mine yesterday. i bought it via amazon.
It was used( open box Like new). And really is just new unit. But there is little bump on back side near samsung logo.( I searched on google and many new unit also have same issue. and anyway its not noticable.)
Price was $387 (including fast shipping in 2-5 days). It converted into 24263 inr (always place order in USD).
It shipped via fedex. custom duty is little less than 15%.+ fedex fees and service tax. Totally i paid 4268 inr as duty.
Its super easy just make everything clear with seller.
I hope it helps you.
Thanks. So it works out to around 29000. I have to say that's quite tempting even given the warranty issues.
Yeah that's the reason i got one.
So my trusty Galaxy Note 3 finally seems to have given up the ghost, dementia of the nand chip. It's been a great workhorse, and I was really hoping it would last until the Note 10 came along but it seems it had other ideas. RIP.
There's a lot about the newer Samsungs that I don't really care much for (no replaceable battery, narrower screen than my Note 3, lack of physical front buttons, those silly curved-edge displays which make decent tempered-glass screen protectors harder to fit, etc) but it looks like I really don't have much of a choice now. I guess I'll have to accept the loss of many features that I liked (for the 'greater good', Samsung?) and be dragged kicking and screaming into 2019. (I know I could get a second-hand Note 3, but even I accept that's probably not such a good idea these days in terms of camera quality, processing power, etc)
The S10+ still has a slightly narrower display than I'd like (I don't care a jot how tall they make it, as like most of the UK I read from side to side, not up and down) but at least it has front-panel fingerprint activation, and has not ditched the 3.5mm headphone socket or the SD Card slot. The timing of the demise of my Note 3 stinks though - just after all the pre-launch offers on the S10+ seem to have vanished, but before the retail price has started to slide.
It seems there's very little choice but to pay around £899 for an unlocked 128GB SIM-free version. There are also some advertised for the £700 region on Amazon/eBay, but I assume they are grey imports? Apart from the lack of manufacturers warranty here in the UK (which I am likely to clobber fairly quickly by rooting it anyway) what are the pros and cons? And are there still any introductory offers out there that I have missed?
Thanks for helping out this grieving Note 3 owner who now feels like a traitor to his long-time faithful companion... :crying:

The Pixel XL was one I looked at. Nearly as wide a screen as my Note 3 (not quite, but about the same as the S10+ so little to choose between them) but it seemed rather lacking in other features, specifically no SD Card (which is a complete deal-breaker for me) and no wired headphone socket (ditto). At least they both have wireless charging, which almost makes up for there being no removable battery (a real retrograde step in phone design IMHO, I swap mine regularly on my Note 3). On the definite plus side, no curved-edge screen though.

Until it suddenly dies and warranty accuses you of doing something, plus it's a crappy phone overall, looks like an abomination and isn't even worth £500 for some silly low light camera. Almost forgot to mention the screen burn-in, walk in any Carphone Warehouse and find me ANY pixel without burn-in, it's insane they're still selling that crap, no wonder I've never seen a single pixel in the wild in Europe.

Note 9 512gb b&h $750
Well, looks like my Note 3 is definitely dead so I'm now actively planning on getting an S10+ to replace it. I'll have to live without root for the time being, I'm sure it will come as some point.
I quite like the idea of the ceramic black back cover (the 'pearlescent gloss' look of the regular black - closer to greyish - versions seems a bit tacky and will mark easily) but I don't think the 128GB version comes in that finish in the UK?
I've found a Spanish site that is offering 128GB Ceramic Black (https://www.costomovil.es/moviles-y...samsung-galaxy-s10+-128gb-ceramic-black-libre) but not sure of the variant that they would be selling (they state SM-G975FZKDPHE)? I'm assuming that any official European release version (SIM-free unlocked) will be the same base hardware and have the same cell-frequencies, so it would work just as well here in the UK as it would anywhere else in Europe, and I could install official BTU firmware via Odin anyway.
However if I buy now from Spain, and the UK does leave the EU soon, do you think Samsung will still honour their original 2-year purchase warranty here in the UK as they do now, based on the conditions at the purchase date?
Andre
