Need help unlocking phone - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have seen allot of information out there that says you can unlock your device but entering the debug mode
long series *# the code to enter the mode works but the steps that are listed afterwards never match up to the options that are on my device
and i dont want to randomly go though messing with stuff. so does anyone have a guide or information on how to unlock it.
I am currently using straight talk on a Att note 3
and before you ask the reason i want to unlock it is I may be moving to a area with a stronger t mobile bandwidth and i would like to use their towers as well

Working carrier unlock, CID, tether on Optimus 7

I have successfully done the following:
1. Carrier Unlocked a Telus branded LG E900h Optimums 7
2. Connected the phone to Fido
3. Use 3G on Fido
4. Fixed broken Call Display problem
5. Tethered E900h to laptop
6. Set up Wireless Zune sync
I thought I would share my experience to reduce frustration that any others may encounter.
Unlocking the phone
Because my local phone unlock guy was closed the day I purchased the Optimus 7, I tried instantunlockcodes.com and purchased an unlock code for $10. I received 2 codes the next day, but neither worked. I recommend not using this website, as tech support responses were next day, and they were never able to get the code working (after 3 days).
I took the phone to my local unlock guy, who unlocked it successfully. He charged me $65.
For anyone who is trying to unlock the phone, when you insert a foreign SIM, the Optimus 7 asks you for a PIN. This is where you enter the service provider unlock code. When I tried either of the codes that instantunlockcodes.com gave to me, it said, "SIM ERROR". After looking around on the Internet, it seems that this is the message that comes up when it's the wrong code.
Getting Data on Fido
Telephone/voicemail automatically worked on Fido. To get Data to work (ie 3G) I had to change the APN setting.
Go to SETTINGS -> Cellular -> edit apn
"edit apn" is the button at the bottom of that screen. The settings should be:
APN: internet.fido.ca
User name: fido
Password: fido
Have Data connection ON and 3G connection ON.
Internet now worked for me, including browser and Outlook. Outlook connected to Exchange flawlessly.
Incidentally, the first time I set up my phone, I set up Windows Live immediately (startup wizard), and then Outlook Exchange. My appointments from Exchange were all in bright pink.
Because Windows Live was giving me a sync error, I did a factory reset, and set up Outlook first this time. Now, my Exchange appointments are in red. No idea how to change the color, but I prefer red. In both cases, the Windows Live account's appointments are in Blue.
Call Display and MMS
Call Display and MMS did not work. Frankly, I don't care about MMS (there is another thread on how to fix this), but Call Display is quite important.
Specifically, Call Display worked when land lines called me, but did not call when most cell phones called me. They would read, Unknown.
The solution to this was through Fido: I had to call them and change my Call Display from "Call Display with Name Display" to "Call Display WITHOUT Name Display". Evidently, this problem has manifested in other unlocked phones, such as some Blackberries as well.
A point of interest: when I put in the original Telus SIM, the call display also did not work properly. They must have given me Call Display with Name Display as well.
Tethering and Wireless Sync
Tethering is a really handy thing for me. I use it infrequently, but it's really invaluable when I need it.
I've modified the solution that's been posted around, to be specific to Fido, but to clarify a couple of the screens, as well:
1. If you haven't already, install Zune first. While tethering is enabled, Wired Sync on Zune won't work. But Zune has wireless synch, which is way cool anyhow.
2. Set up Wireless Sync on Zune. I won't go into all the details, but basically, make sure that the phone is connected to the WiFi network, that your PC has access to the same network (it can be hardwired, as long as it has access to the same IP subnet). If you have a guest/work router, make sure that both your phone and PC are on the same network. With your phone plugged in, run the Wireless Sync wizard on Zune. It's painless.
3. Unplug your phone.
4. Press Phone, and dial ##634#, then press the Call button. This makes visible a hidden app called "MFG". Go to the list of all your apps, and you'll see a new icon with a hammer, wrench and screwdriver lablelled MFG. Open it.
5. You'll be asked for a password. Enter 277634#*# -- you'll need to enter this password every time you want to go into MFG, which is a good thing, because I think you can seriously mess up your phone if you play around in there.
5. Go to Engineer -> Port Setting
6. Select the QC COMPOSITE and validate. The phone will automatically reboot.
7. VERY IMPORTANT STEP: This is totally counter-intuitive, but you must go to SETTINGS -> Cellular and turn OFF Data Connection.
Note that once you're done tethering, you need to turn it back ON in order to use Internet on the phone.
8. Connect the phone with a USB cable.
9. Windows will automatically detect the phone, and if you're using Windows 7, will prompt you with a popup with the download link for the LG driver. It says LG CDMA driver, but it works. The full file name is LGUSBModemDriver_Eng_WHQL_Ver_4.9.4_All.exe
10. Once the drivers are installed, click start, and type "Modem", click Phone and Modem.
11. Click Modems, double-click LGE CDMA USB MODEM, click the Advanced tab.
12. Under Extra Initialization Commands, enter:
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.fido.ca"
Replace internet.fido.ca with a different provider APN, if you're not with Fido, obviously.
13. Close the Modems screen, click Start, type "Dial" and click Set up a Dial-up Connection.
14. Enter your home area code because Windows forces you to, and go to the next screen. Then enter as the dialing number:
*99#
Leave the login/password blank. Click connect -- and PRESTO! Tethered Optimus 7.
* IMPORTANT *
Once you're finished tethering, you need to turn Data Connection back on. For some reason, when Data Connection is on, tethering doesn't work. Fortunately, it's a pretty simple toggle to switch.
I hope that this is helpful!
This was very helpful thank you!
I want to get an optimus 7 and unlock it but i was counting on a website since i don't have an unlock guy. Is your guy by any chance in montreal?
And if not then do you think unlockallcellularDOTcom will work?
Also, how are you liking the optimus 7's hardware(not wp7's missing features)?would you pick it over the surround?
Unfortunately, my guy is in Vancouver, and I have no experience with unlockallcellular.
I love the Optimus 7's build -- it is an extremely well built, sturdy device. I chose it over the surround (basically the same price) because I don't have occasion to use the slideout speaker, and the LG is thinner.
The only hardware aspect I don't like is the micro-USB plug on the side.
Try typing "LG Optimus 7 Unlock" in Ebay.ca, there only option there is mobilexpresscanada, which charges $25 right now to unlock it, and that is the price through ebay. On their site, the price is at $40. I have used their services in the past, and they are often very reliable and fast. I have yet to unlock my own Optimus 7, as I see no need for it yet (I travel to Europe and Middle East after May, so the price and need might be different then), however, there are possitive reviews regarding the unlocking of the Optimus 7 on their Ebay page. Good luck.
I'm having a problem with the same model phone. I've put a bell SIM that I just picked up in the phone and it's not prompting me for an unlock code. I've purchased an unlock code from a site I trust, but it's kind of hard to enter it with no prompt.
Did you have to do anything special for the unlock prompt to appear?
I'm having issues... I walked through the APN settings and all on the E900h but I still get that triangle which basically says no data. I have the phone unlocked and all... thought maybe I need to put some setting in the MFG up or something? Really confused... I get cell coverage but zero/nada on Data/3G.
There's any way to set the MMS server of a carrier that's not preset on the "Profiles" of MFG App?
Thanks

Can anyone confirm this?
Does an unlocked Telus Optimus 7 think it's roaming when it's on the Fido network?
I know that was an issue with older GSM phones due to the Rogers/Fido network code renaming...
no power supply while tethering
I noticed when I left my optimus in tethering mode the battery kept going down even while connected to computer via usb. There seems to be power because when it got down to zero, the usb kept powering my optimus. Is the power supply in tethering mode reduced? Anybody with similar experience?
any idea how to take the menu MGF back again to "normal" ? because sometimes we could have to send back to LG and they will notice, after i did this (only put that engenier code the phone unlocked for any network ) hahahaha is this possible ? how back to normal anyway ?
Well, the MFG app can be deleted like any other app. So there is that. And I am pretty sure your phone is NOT unlocked for all networks when you put in ##634# and then enter 277634#*#
I would like to ask the OP if he attempted to input the unlocking codes he received from the website, more than 3 times?
I also received codes from a website and after 3 attempts at inputting them at the pin screen, the phone now asks for a PUK code?
I thought this odd.
I put my sim that came with the phone back into it and it did not ask for any other code.
I have now tried sims from 4 other networks, from friends etc, and every time it asks for a puk code.
Any info you can provide would be great. I have gone to hell and back with this phone I plan to make a big tutorial at the end so that nobody else has to go through the same.
There is so much mis-information on the internet about these handsets, its unreal
Cheers

Confirmed: The phone is always roaming on Fido. So it's a bit of a hack in that you have to enable data while roaming - just need to be careful to disable data in case you are ACTUALLY roaming.

Thanks!!!
The hint with setting Data-Connection to OFF was the clue.
Works now also with vodafone in Germany!
U.
You can obtain your unlock code in fastgsm.com with your IMEI, and change your APN Settings to your new carrier network..
Can you tether this phone with a mac? And please don't start this fanboy thing...

[Q] Repair tools

So I am digging the barrel on this but in short i used to be able to repair a meid using all the standard tools. For some reason now i have been getting errors trying to read. For this example i'll use cdma workshop. I used to be able to just send the spc and password and everything went smoothly. Now i can connect to the phone but it freezes the program when i try to read anything. The only thing that has changed is I upgraded my phone and my wifes phone to gingerbread.. What I need to know is simply does the upgrade from froyo to gb kill the ability to edit the phone info? Also just to be said this thread will NOT be used to talk about anything illegal like cloning or switching carries. There are many other threads on that. I just want to know if gb killed the common tools out there. Thanks. Oh and just before anyone suggests it yes the phone is in modem mode and debugging on. Thanks.

Virgin swap, Kyocera Jax to HTC Evo 4g

hey everyone, i think this is only my second post. Heres what im up to
have VM/Assurance Wireless on Kyocera Jax. Have and older HTC Evo i used on Sprint but hasnt been connected to their network for like a year
Im trying to swap out all the info so i can basically use the Evo instead of the Jax
I have cdma worshop, qxdp, etc
Problem is with getting the required info off of the donor phone, the Kyocera Jax. It seems that Virgin disables the usb data connection before shipping. You connect the phone with usb to a computer, and nothing happens. Device Manager doesnt even show a port. So like i said, it seems well known that Virgin disables their cheaper phones usb data connection
Ive tried unlocking the Kyocera by pressing 1111111, then hitting service. It asks for a password, most likely the spc/msl. However, people are saying these phones dont even have an spc/msl to avoid doing what im trying to do.
did write down a code from when i activated the phone, and it might be of use ##847446#
This allowed me to get into programming, but there was no option to allow data to the usb or anything else like that, it just shows me the MDN and MSID
The ##847446# code does not work when you hit 111111 and go to service when it asks for security code
It only works when you are dialing a number like you normally would
Whats the deal?
How can I activate the usb data port? What can i do to get info off the phone in order to switch over to the Evo if CDMA Workshop and Device Manager arent even showing any activity when the phone is connected via usb to the computer????
well i called Virgin trying to get an msl...they said they dont have them, that Kyocera has the msl. Went to the Kyocera site, it said to contact Virgin. Ugh. So nobody wants to give up the msl.
Virgin DOES disable the usb data connection on these phones. How do I enable it???
I cant really do this until i can get the info i need from the donor Kyocera phone...it has a usb connection but they disable it so you cant do **** like this i guess
I just want to use talk and text on my Evo by switchng the info from the Kyocera Virgin gave me with the Evo ,i do NOT care about data or 3g
still working on this one
I am not sure about Virgin but with Boost to get talk and text working you only need meid, mdn, and msid, then make the phone OTA program. As I said I do not know if it will work the same for Virgin as it does Boost but since they are on the same towers anyways I imagine not alot of settings should have to be changed. Hope this helps!
thanks mate! Well i have the mdn and msid...and i think the meid is actually on the battery...so i may just be in business!!! i think today is the day!!!
things arent going that well
the only thing i need for an OTA is the msl from my Evo. I cant connect the phone to CDMA workshop because there is something funky with the HTC DIAG driver install. I have the inf to make it show as htc usb modem but when i try to update the driver in order for CDMA workshop to work it says theres no devices that meet that software need
my other try to get the msl was with a terminal emulator. this process did not work either
im now going to try to root my phone, never rooted, not sure what will happen, and then i can run the msl reader application in the play store
Did you press ##3424# before trying to read evo with cdma ws?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
This is really becoming a nightmare. I cant tell you how many things ive had to download just to be able to root my phone, which is what ive decided to do in order to get my msl...after im rooted i will be able to use the msl reader from the app store.
ive never thought about rooting before, and im wondering if im going to lose all my data, such as contacts, everything. Will I? Im using the htcdev method and it may be easy to some of you but i swear all i do is see more and more links to files or programs i need to have first.
all i want is my msl
Called Sprint 1 to 5 times today trying to get my msl from them...but since the account has been cancelled for like a year due to payment, for some reason are unable to see the msl
They were more than happy to ask for an address to which they could send the bill for 250 bucks though

i did not! i shall try. probably what stumped me. After that ill keep tinkering. Thanks for being there klown!
im also new to the board so when i hit multiquote i thought that was to quote you in a reply so i think i need to delete like 5 multiquote mishaps
i cant really explain, it all happened so fast....the reason my HTC DIAG drivers were not working is because i didnt try the x86 option. I am now succesfully connected to CDMA workshop. Now to find the msl!!!!!! i should be able to find it with CDMA WOrkshop right?
edit WTF it says 0000 for spc
and there is an option to set it on or off. which do i choose? also an option to write it...just make it all zeros?
and should i still do ota or should i use cdma workshop? or use the virgin thread method?
got the correct spc from CDMA workshop. Now, when I open QPST, it doesnt even show my phone. Typed ##3424# before connecting, then connecting to CDMA workshop first, then opening QPST, but QPST will simply not read/see my phone. Are there specific drivers for QPST?

no, just connect it to the port your phone is on.
if you don't know the port, then you can find it through device manager, or you can just try connecting to ports in cdma until you find the right port, and then add the port in qpst
im now on the last step ....using this method

if you go to the last page i have a few posts about whats going on. Ive come very far. Sadly this last step with QXDM is simply not working... can verify that the meid is now cleared out...what i cant do is write the new/correct meid
also, the method/thread over there doesnt say anything about that three letter word that starts with an E

thanks again for all the help mike and klown and everyone!!!!
oay heres where im at now...currently connected to cdma and have verified MEID and the "E something something" have been changed correctly!!!!!!!!!
now the question is, do i just unplug the phone and try to make a call? Reboot the phone? Save it all to a file and load that at startup or something?
Or is this pretty much it?
I have a feeling the meid and e something something will zero out again as soon as i disconnect from the computer.
Also, i followed all the steps properly...and was never prompted to enter any MDN or MSID data...so that data has not been applied. Does it need to be??
edi wait wait....my DIAG TX for e something something reads all zeroes, while the DIAG RX is correct. The RX and TX are the same for the meid
okay the big moment has arrived...just restarted it waiting to boot...and i found out i needed to # my msl then change the mdn and msid. fingers crossed
errr im getting an error 16
alright i get an error 16 when i call out, i guess is from Sprint? I cant have them reset anything because my account has been inactive for like a year.
i can receive calls oddly...the phone lights up for a second then goes dark....but the phone sure does tell me that i missed a call
just tried texting to the phone, nothing yet. I thought i could use sms but maybe the evo only uses mms???
Not sure if it is the same on VM as it is on Boost, but to fix the error 16, just log in to your acct online and look for an option to update handsets. Simply swap out handsets then swap right back, that is the quickest way to fix error 16 with Boost, maybe it will work with VM?

error 16 isn't a really big deal, it means that you had both phones on at the same time. What you should do is take the battery out of your kyocera and never turn it on again.
I got error 16 as well the first time I flashed, I had the phone turned off but with the battery still in it and got the error.
Error 16 is easy to fix follow this forum post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290906
Inside of that post will be a phone number to call to reach sprints "Error 16 Call Center" they'll ask you some questions about YOUR VIRGIN MOBILE INFORMATION, your account name, what kind of phone you have, yada yada yada. Just give them all your information, but only for your KYOCERA and VIRGIN account, don't mention that you flashed your phone or anything, just give them the info from your account and from your kyocera phone.
They'll get you working within, like, 20 seconds.
It's not like boost where you can fix it on the website.
Thanks for sharing your trial and error on this! I'm getting ready to try the same thing, except on a Samsung Galaxy SIII. I've got the Kyocera JAX that I'm pulling the information from but I would like to use the data functions as well (Assurance offers the Virgin Mobile unlimited everything for $30/mo, absolutely worth the money if it works). I rooted it first thing, then unlocked it and now I'm just trying to make sure I've got all of the info I need before I start making real changes on the Galaxy.
BTW - I've heard that Virgin does offer 4G data and I'd love to be able to access that since I won't be able to take advantage of the LTE capabilities of this really sweet piece of electronic indulgence. Any advice or information is gratefully accepted.
kyocera diag mode
get the msl from virgin. tell them you can reprogram your phone and if you cant your just thinking about changing to another carrier. if your a good customer they will give it up.
on the kyocera type ##3424# then enter your msl(spc) its 6 digits......
from there your phone will show usb/diag on off....
good luck trying to read it with anything. i tries a kona a coast and some other cheap phone and managed to get this far and connected etc but they will not read.
Good luck. if you figure something out let me know

Need Some Help with Sprint S4

I recently messed up my GS4 pretty bad playing around in the hidden menu and clearing my EFS because my GPS was not working. Anyways I got my IMEI back, GPS, Domestic SIM unlock etc but the CDMA portion of phone won't connect to towers anymore. Turns out I also cleared the RF calibration that phone requires in process. I need somebody who has a working Sprint S4 & knows their MSL/SPC code to help provide me the calibration data so I can get my device up and running again on CDMA networks. I will also need somebody who is willing to participate in a TeamViewer session to get the RF cal info from the device because it requires use of specialized software licensed to me.
Please if anybody has a working sprint S4 and some time I would really appreciate it. I know it may be a lot to ask but it's only way I can think to fix mine & It may also allow me to repair others in future. In return I can remotely SIM unlock your Samsung device depending on the model for free. I use a licensed app called Chimera for Unlocks and Repairs which is also the reason I need the participant to install TeamViewer on their PC. There is no risk to you, your PC or the device I just need somebody who is willing to trust me and essentially loan me their PC with device connected for bit.
Requirements Needed to Help:
1. A working sprint S4 activated or not but at least able to receive cellular signal. Preferably one that nobody has meddled with in DFS, QPST, Hidden menus, etc.
2. Device in diagnostic mode using ##3424# > Qualcomm USB Setting > DM+MODEM+ADB
3. Device SPC/MSL code
4. Hangouts or similar
Thanks guys! I hope somebody comes through!

Service Menu/Engineer Mode?

Hello to the community!
I need assistance getting the Service Menu to work.
I followed the S6 instructions:
Goto /efs/carrier/hiddenmenu
Change to ON
Save and reboot
Dial *#0011#
Now a menu does come up, but it's blank (see attached pic). Am I missing something? Please help!
P.S. I've tried Phone Info app, doesn't help a bit
No one ever answered this so I will. I am 99% sure the Verizon version has to be rooted to access the diagnostic menu functions. It can still perform some of the single test dial codes, but I couldn't tell you there.
I am rooted and was at the time of posting. Doesn't really matter for me now, have an S8+.
This is the code for the service menu for Verizon phones

not on galaxy J737V it dont
Not all verizon phone come with Enginnering mode on them, I have worked for Sprint as Engineer contract for AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile. Verizon is in class of it own, i just pruchased two SM-G30V one came with Engineering mode on it the other no engineering mode. Verizon's Engineer or Cell Technicians actually have software to push to the phone Via USB cable. Rooting a Sprint, Tmobile, AT&T all for it makes test easy with out cables, But verizon is not worth rooting and usually has side effects that i had and had to use the verizon Software to repair. Hope this helps.

That is your opinion (which you are entitled to) and your experience. I have S7edge, Verizon, been rooted for about 2 years now with ZERO issues. I also have access to this Engineering (Service) Mode- not that I have any use for it.
If you had to use Verizon's "software repair tool" then you had a separate issue.
YMMV
