[Q] Baseband question - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone
I wanted to ask you a question about my device's baseband.
Currently I'm on CyanogenMod rom version 11, which I installed via the installer (since it looked so fast and easy).
I moved to CM about 2 months ago from the BTU version of baseband I9505XXUEMK8.
I do not have any reception problems but I saw since this baseband version there went out many other versions (including the new baseband version for the leaked Kitkat).
I do not want to have future problems and I feel "guilty" on being on an older baseband version so my question is when do I need to change the baseband version? Only if I have reception problems or in other cases, too? And in which cases?
Thanks in advance

If everything is working fine then there is no need to change. Usually people would change if their network releases a new modem as it's better to be on the recommended modem used in the original firmware by your specific network or if people are having signal issues. All models work regardless of rom. I've flashed many modems and all have worked fine find the right one and stick to it.

So as I said, I'm on I9505XXUEMK8 modem almost 3 months (from the moment it was released for BTU, but I'm from Israel not England).
As far as I understood, I can stay on that rom as long as I don't have any problems right?

Correct. You'll be fine with your current set up.

Modem-related questions

Hi
I'm running Euphoria RC2 (ICS based as you should know).
Is it safe to flash any modem over it? I live in brazil and i am currently using KB5, and i'd like to know wich modem would be the best one for my area and carrier, how can i decide that?

You can find a bunch of ICS modems here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399722
Unfortunately modems are binary-only black boxes, possibly full of spyware, so there is no information that I know of about how they work. The recommendations seem to be generally to just try different ones and see what works for you.
This is assuming Brazil uses the same 3g bands as your phone. If not, I don't think a modem will help.

[Q] - i9507: No service on KitKat - Can receive calls, can't dial (no service)

Hi Guys,
I'm from Australia and recently bought an Optus Galaxy S4 4G. Strangely, the model number is i9507. I double-checked this online and usually weird model numbers are just carrier-spin-offs. So I went ahead to root and flash just like you would with an International i9505.
So far no problems - 4.3.x PA rom works absolutely fine.
BUT:
I've tried some Kit Kat roms recently and they all flash fine but give me 'mobile network not available'. Strangely though, I can receive calls/text and talk on the phone, but when I try to dial or send text messages, I can't do it. My reception bar is completely empty as well.
WiFi is totally fine, just no data and mobile network
I've tried messing with the 'network operators' setting and if i select my carrier (I have a Vodafone sim) I'll get network reception until I turn off the screen and then my mobile network becomes unavailable again
Not sure what the problem is; modem? APN? or roms not suitable for my phone?

I've been flashing for a while now but it's usually just basic stuff so you can probably tell I'm pretty amateur lol.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks =)

Hi Rich
As your baseband is quite out of sync with the firmware you are trying to run (MH2 is from 4.2.2 ,,, right?) I would suggest you change your baseband (modem) flashing an equivalent to the ROM firmware from here.
I've got yesterday the exactly same behaviour when finally and reluctantly I've added a data plan. I was running a successful low-baseband + high-firmware because was setted to "GSM Only" (try it ... will work flawless). When I've switched to LTE got what you've described in the face too . I've promptly updated my baseband and now all is fine
EDIT: please do nothing of the above described BEFORE taking a EFS backup with every tool you can find and preserving them in several highly fortified locations and 2 or 3 K7 Tapes too . Have an ODIN flashable copy of your MH2 baseband is advisable too.
Hope I've helped and please share your experience.
Nice regards.
.
Hey thanks for the reply! Helps heaps =)
While I still had those roms installed I did try flash a few modems within Odin, all failed though =S
Which one should I be flashing?
I believe I tried XXUFNA1 but the flash just doesn't go through
Does it make a difference which rom I flash the new modem from? I.e. flash when the new modem now or flash the new modem on the kitkat rom?
I'm currently using Pacman 4.3.1 since it's perfectly fine. Just can't wait to get on a KitKat rom though! haha

Hi Rich
Sorry, may be my fault, but quite didn't got your
You may proceed having the below as a rule of thumb:
Your baseband (modem) version should always match your ROM (firmware) version.
Failure to flash something is never good signal. As you have an i9507 (I own the 5) is very advisable to flash a modem built for your S4 flavour.
The above rule should apply to it too so, if the only modem available for the i9507 is the MH2 your firmware have to match or these issues reported will return.
Did you tested the "GSM Only" option to corroborate (or not) my hyphothesis? With this config, you should perceive no signal drops when waked. I know it isn't a viable operational mode but ... just for fun
Nice regards and keep sharing

Reception/Modem/Baseband

Hello,
I recently upgraded from Xperia Arc S to Samsung Galaxy S4 I9505.
I bought my device from Hong Kong, with HK firmware. After I opened the package I put my SIM inside,
the reception was not very good. I was instructed by the company to use GSM only since there is no
LTE network in Israel as of today.
I flashed a couple of ROMs since and today I am on MIUI v5 which is my favorite, the reception remains
the same in all ROMs, quite bad compared to my old Xperia Arc S.
I was wondering about basebands and modems, I have been watching those two names floating around
the forums quite a bit and I never got around to playing with those.
So my questions are as follows:
1. Is there a different between modem and baseband or are these two just different words that refers to the same thing?
2. Does changing a baseband/modem can help get better reception?
3. If the answer to 2 is yes, which one should I get?
Thanks,
Oded
Yes modem/baseband are the same thing. Go to SamMobile website Google it, then go to the firmware section, choose the S4 find your carrier and see the latest rom for your carrier in the file name will be some letters and numbers like XXNA5 etc. This will give you a base to start with. Or tell me your operator and I can take a look.

Thanks for the quick reply. How do I find out which firmware I need to download? Israel is not in the list. My carrier is called Orange. http://orange.co.il/
behind the battery it says:
GT-I9505
SSN: -I9505GSMH
RATED
Made by...
Imei...
S/N...
EDIT:
You didn't answer if the incorrect baseband can cause bad reception... it sounds to me like it does but I just want to make sure.
I also noticed that when I reboot my device it goes back to WCDMA only automatically so everytime I reboot/power off I need to reset it to GSM only using *#*#4636#*#*

1. Same thing .
2. Yes.
3. You can check it from here that Base from your country/Provider . And you can download it from here
The problem is that Israel is not on that list, I think because we don't have LTE network and my device is LTE.
My carrier is using GSM network only.
Israel don't sell the I9505 officially, they have the I9500 available from your carriers.
Looking at the I9500 with Orange the latest I9500 modem is: I9500JKUEMJ9
Obviously do not flash the I9500 modem but you can try XXUEMJ9 from the I9505 instead.
From here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192025
Download the modem and flash via Odin. You can any of the I9505 modems. Just try until you get a good one, and as for LTE it doesn't matter in the network settings you will obviously be choosing 3G option instead.

I see, well, it didn't work, I flashed about 7 different modems and I still get bad reception indoors and good reception outdoors.
I will try to test other SIMs of other carriers on this device to see if reception improves.
Thank you very much for you help!

Really? I ask this question because when flashing stock 4.4.2 I had to flash a specific modem otherwise it wouldn't work. If I flash another modem different from FNA5 won't it cause problems in the ROM?

Depends what bootloader your on, I'm assuming your on the new bootloader so you need to flash both the LTE and GSM modems. I'm on a GE 4.4.2 rom and old bootloader running on an older modem and not got any issues. Try it and see what happens you can always flash another after or go back to a 4.4.2 modem.

OK thanks a bunch. If not too much trouble can you point me to a list of the modems you speak of? And is there anywhere where it's detailed how to flash both modems? When I changed modem in the previous ROM's I only had to flash one.

This thread has all the info you need:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192025
A small tip to whom ever is reading this: If you have reception problems just go to someone with the same phone model and just write down the information in about phone section such as: baseband, core, build etc so you know which one works 100% if your phone is the same model.
Anyways, nikzDHD, I9505XXUEML6_MODEM worked best, I flashed 90% of the modems... took me forever :/

Does anyone have GPS working on Marshmallow with N900T?

There seems to be a problem that is common to all marshmallow ROMs, on N900T and possibly also
other versions: once GPS locks, it immediately unlocks again, to lock again, unlock again, and so on.
(I find it easiest to see with the app GPS test - but flashing can be seen on other programs, too)
I've seen it described on Phronesis 6.0.1 (see, for example post 4869), Darklord N7 port (in this thread they seem to be using the app GPS location tracker, which seems to solve the problem, but use battery).
So, my questions are:
Does anyone have GPS working correctly on marshmallow with N900T?
Does this problem occur with any other Note 3 version?
What are possible causes of the problem? Kernel? Modem? How to debug it?
Maybe the problem is with modem version? I have OL1.
I'll try to collect info into this post...
Possible solutions:
This solution on darklord's N7 modifies etc/gps.conf.
This post reports good results with the app GOS location tracker.
This post from AryaMod reports good results with custom gps.conf. Though this post says that the app GPS test still has lock problems.
This post claims the problem is solved by adding "CAPABILITIES=0x11" and hashing out ON_DEMAND.
I tried the CAPABILITIES=0x11 solution on "TouchWiz Marshmallow for Note 3 (V4)", and Arya, and still got flashing GPS lock.
I tried the new "Darklord with all fixes, gps fixed", and GPS still has a problem.

I think this is not a problem specific to N900T, which is why I'm asking here to try to see what devices have the problem... On the various marshmallow ROM threads I don't have the impression that it is a problem just for N900T.
But I have one.
I understand. I have a Note 3 running a stock ROM so I can't offer any possible solutions. Good luck in your search.
Maybe the problem is with the Modem version? N900T has a fairly old modem, whereas N9005 have newer versions. Maybe those that have newer versions installed have no problem, but older ones do, or vice versa? Please report what modem version you have...
I am on n900w8 and I have the same problem. I've tried n900t roms n9005 roms ive tried changing the firmware on my note to a older and newer canadian version. I noticed this problem starting on 6.0.1 never noticed it elsewhere. Its a real bumer.

Im using n9005 on phronesis 6.0.1 n7 port v4.1. Tested on latest modem with lsskernel 3.5ux and 3.8 ux with no hit... only get gps location but cant navigate as no glonass satellite fix... anyone has same issue?
Modem should not be a problem as GPS is on kernel .
Modem or wiFi does give A_GPS .
if you read the forums you will see many models saying GPS does not work on MM .
Fixes are many and varied .
Problem appears to be the simple fact that its a port .
Me N9005 custom rom various and never had a GPS problem .

G900F Rom Recommendation

Hi,
I have a G900F I got in the UK and I've just moved to Canada with. Problem is it doesn't support some of the bands here so I find I often have a poor signal. I'm happy with the stock ROM but I believe if I am to open it up for all bands I need a custom ROM.
I don't need anything too flashy, but I'd like everything to work and be responsive.
In terms of the most complete ROMs it seems LineageOS Official and Resurrection Remixed are the most popular. Can anyone comment? How about Android 6 vs 7?
Thanks
Used to use resurrection but now that I've moved to lineage os I can say that its better and getting improved every update it gets

g900f is almost identical if not the exact same as the canadian s5 g900w8.
you would need to use correct freq for your carrier, search will provide a howto. worse case scenario is to flash a canadian 6.0.1 modem from any canadian 6.0.1 stock fw
if trying to figure out connectivity, stay w/stock first as modems are from stock fw.
imo try superlite 6.0.1, it stock based and only takes a few minutes to install that way you can test out your carrier connectivity issues

So I can keep my stock firmware and just replace the G900F baseband (G900FXXS1CQAV) with the Bell Canada SM-G900W8 Modem and everything will be the same except the phone will work on the Bell Canada frequencies?
I had been planning to follow this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/general/how-to-add-rf-lte-frequency-bands-to-t2886059 to enable the 1700MHz band which is disabled on the G900F, but if flashing a Canadian modem will enable this band that sounds easiest.
Do I need to download the full 1.5GB firmware and extract the modem from it?
Thanks

ive never tried flashing a mdm from another model as ive never needed to for the s5.
ive not read enough to know if its possible or if it has any neg consequences.
easiest would be to change freq w/current mdm, search for samsung secret service codes to view and maybe change current freq
good place to start is here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729694
I've done a lot of research on this forum. Most people say that installing G900W8 firmware on G900F isn't possible. Also it seems that it is the NVRAM which stores what bands are allowed on what model, so simply flashing a different modem won't make a difference.
Some people are saying that the hardware is different and this is what limits the bands, but I don't believe so, the radio/modem chip is the same version between models.
Trying to follow the link I posted earlier to change the NVRAM values after installing a custom ROM appears to be the only way. Some people say it works, and others say it only appears to work. The original thread was closed years ago so I guess I'll just need to try it and see.
Alternatively I could buy 2 phones, one W8 to use in Canada and a F to use in Europe, this seems silly though.
