Hi everyone. I have followed the YouTube video by Chris Nacca (http://youtu.be/Ov6BXOu7SwA)that uses TWRP 2.5 custom recovery (file: openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.2-jfltexx.tar) on my unlocked GT-i9505 S4 using Odin 3.07. Unfortunately, despite the message from Odin indicates all worked fine (<ID:0/004> RES OK !!), on rebooting my phone back into Recovery mode, I am greeted with the Android character telling me there is an Error and then "dying" and saying "No Command".
The phone isn't bricked as I can move the highlight bar through the various menu options at the top left-hand side of the screen and reboot back via my stock ROM but clearly the Custom Recovery hasn't been installed correctly and, despite the Message screen in Odin showing <OSM> All threads completed. (success 1 / failed 0).
I have a rooted and unlocked GT-I9505 with a baseband reading as: I9505ZHUZME1. Anyone got any ideas or advice as to what may have gone wrong as if I can't sort this out I can't move to a custom ROM. :crying:
Many thanks in advance, Jim

Thanks for your reply. Being new to Android, am I correct in assuming that I merely download the last .tar file from the page you provided the link to and install it as I did the TWRP custom recovery file using Odin? Am I right in believing this will leave me with my Stock ROM but I can then do a Nandroid Backup and move to a custom ROM from there when I am ready?

Sorry small correction
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281367
use the above link which is PHILZ recovery
Edit : u have to have ur phone into download mode which u can go by
power off device unplug press volume down home power all together till u get download mode and connect to device
the file extension will be .tar use it on PDA at odin and flash it
then u can take a backup of the entire current firmware and keep it to safe place like PC Hard drive and move to ROMS

Thanks. One (hopefully) last question: The link you provided has both *.zip and *.tar.md5 files. I presume you mean I should use the latter, and do I need to remove the last portion (.md5) to make it a *.tar file or use it as is in Odin 3.07?

User .tar one philz_touch_5.06.6-i9505.tar.md5 since u dont have recovery
No need to remove md5
Odin 3.07 is fine use
below line is Just for info
Zip files are " flashable made" can be used if a one is already having recovery etc like how u flash a rom from recovery

Sorry, back again. I have done as you suggested (twice) and still can't get my phone to install a custom recovery. While Odin once again reports a successful install (as it did when installed the TWRP custom recovery), when I reboot back into custom recovery mode after installing PhilZ Touch custom recovery (as indicated by the blue text on the start-up screen), I no longer get the dying Android figure as I did when installed TWRP custom recovery, but the screen goes to a black, vibrates and then the phone reboots normally (which is a relief). So, needless to say - I am stumped. Can you or anyone else offer any suggestions?

Definitely a rooted phone. I have SuperUser on it and a range of applications from Titanium Backup, ROM Toolbox, GooManager etc all confirm that they have root access.

Ok can u tell me how u have rooted the phone ?
Also download a app from play store "root checker" and see what its saying
possibly the recovery is not getting installed on phone coz of some root access
Edit : Superuser etc can be there from play store without root also wont work thought

Happy to try but could you point me to how I get back to stock firmware and then reset the device? I thought I was still using stock firmware (rooted I understand) so I think you must mean that I need to unroot my phone some how, reboot and then use the rooting process you just posted before install Philz recovery. Would you mind describing a little more - I know I have taken up a lot of your time but greatly apprecriate your help,

U can download the stock firmware from ur device I9505 will be abt 1.4 gb
once downloaded extract in a folder then flash using Odin pda - need to select .tar here again as u did b4 for recovery flashng etc
This will flash a Firmware and u will have stock phone unrooted
from there reset the device from ur phone which will remoce all the bad files etc and all the data also from ur Internal phone memory
after that as told Root and install recovery hope fully this will work without issues

Okay, got all that. I am surprised that you can flash stock firmware back on to your phone as I was under the impression you needed a custom recovery installed before you could add a custom ROM. Is that purely a "safety" precaution and I could bite the bullet and install a custom ROM now (should I be silly enough to try)? I do have may SYSTEM, APPS and USER data back up. Obviously I will loose everything on my phone doing this but can I expect that I can restore the APPs and USER data from my existing backup but not attempt to do this will the system files in fear of recreating the current problem?

Yes u can flash stock with Odin no need to install recovery for that..Custom recovery is needed mostly to flash custom Roms more or less u can say
and this method is 100% safe as long as u do properly
make sure u have 60% plus battery on the phone dont disconnect while its running / installing
and dont re install backup u have taken b4 with system files etc myte create plm
rather use titanium / mybackup pro app just to backup messages/ apps etc and save it else where or SD card for later use

Hi, I have done as suggested and flashed the stock ROM and performed a hard Reset. I didn't expect the flashing of the ROM would leave all my apps and screens as they were. Is that normal? I did confirm that the baseband number had changed, which is has. I then moved on to install the root as suggested and all seems to have worked well with the red Android figure appearing. Unfortunately SuperSU is complaining of not having the necessary binary files and Root Checker doesn't seem to be able to determine whether I have rooted phone or not as it just sits there complaining that my system seem slow. Any advice? Thanks.

Hi, yes I tried SU from play store - same issue. I also reset from the Backup and Reset option on the phone which did delete all the apps etc so to the best of my knowledge, I followed all the steps as described by you and on the various pages you gave me links to.
I have just tried SuperUser. It noted the binaries were old but when it attempted to update, said it "failed" to gain root access. Despite getting the confirmatory Red Android after the root process, I now wonder if it didn't go entirely as planned despite trying 2-3 times....?

Hello,
I had safestrap 3.71 installed on my MK2 AT&T stock rom. I had also installed Hyperdrive on slot 1. Everything was fine until I decided to re-flash everything. This what I did. I removed micro sd card with all the data (pic, music etc) on it. activated stock slot. Deleted slot 1 (hyperdrive). Did a factory reset in stock slot. Did a format data in stock slot. Did another factory reset in stock slot. Then created a slot for HyperDrive in slot 1. And after that I think I made a mistake and restarted the phone without installing anything.
And now I am stuck at "Sumsung Custom" logo. Even if I removed battery and restarted again. Still i am syuck at Samsung Custom logo. Can you guys help me? I am not even getting option to go in to Safestrap at the time booting.
I think I got slot 1 activated without anything installed on it.
Thanks,
Alex

You made sure to restart in between flashes? As in flash emergency 1, reboot to download, flash emergency 2, reboot to download, and then flash the recovery?

Yes I restarted between flashes. And I think everything went the way it should. So, also flashed MK2Recovery and now I am able to boot in to recovery. After booting in to recovery I flashed update.zip from the post. But still I am not able to boot in to system. Phone reboots and go in to a black screen with blue pulsating LED. If I connect the phone to PC, I can access SD Card and Device storage.
Is there anything I can do? Do I need to visit Best Buy? (or even it won't work?)
Regards,
One more question.
Will I be charged anything if I go to a Best Buy Samsung Experience Shop for a re-flash?
Regards,
Alex

Did it do that small update the first time you went into recovery? It should automatically flash something the first time you go in and then reboot, and then you flash the MK2 file.

Hey Guys,
Just to let you know. I went to Best Buy samsung experience and that guy didn't know much. He took 10 minutes to get in to recovery and tried to factory rest, which didn't work. Later he took another 10 minutes to get in to download mode and then connected phone to his computer. He tried to reflash system with SMART but SMART said couldn't recognize the phone!! (Do you guys know what might be the reason?) After few trys he gave up and asked me to send device back to samsung.
After that I tried ted77usa's guide again and it worked this time!! So I am back on MK2, rooted with saferoot, safestrapped and now on Hyperdrive!!
Thank you very much guys. You are awesome.

Alex
Hey guys, been looking through the forum all morning at different ROM's. I considered the KK upgrade, however can't find a working link to a DL, my telco still have not released the KK update.
I have N9005 model, on 4.3 rooted using Chainfire, have CWM. I DL a 4.3 ROM, but can't figure out how to get it on my phone from PC (I sent the zip file over, but it does not show up on CWM), I found a few KK ROMS that interest me, but can't find a working link to a DL of 4.4.2 it for me to flash. I would post in the respective thread, but I cn't post in the developer forums yet.
As I understand to do most roms on here now, I need to flash 4.4.2, Root it, install new version of CWM, then install the rom.
However if I have used CWM to do a nandroid backup, is it possible to flash it back to that, or is any chance of 4.3 gone once I flash 4.4
I know this is very noob, but we all gotta learn some day.
Any help, even a link to 4.4.2 DL would be awesome.

First thing, if you go to KK you can't come back. Nobody has yet found a way to reset Knox or to revert the bootloader from KK. Go to it and you're stuck with it. May not matter depending on how you use your phone but there's a thread on here where the poster actually got his phone replaced because KK update meant he could no longer use it as he wanted and as he had it set up under 4.3.
(see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2709623 )
You've already tripped Knox using Chainfire's autoroot so you're free to do pretty much whatever you wish. I have stayed with 4.3, using Alliance ROM, Philz recovery and Lean kernel because the phone is awesome using them and KK seems to be generating lots of problems even now and doesn't appear to offer anything really worth having to make up for the troubles... IMO.
If you can't see the zip in CWM the most likely reason is you're looking at the wrong 'card' - in Philz recovery for example, the external SD card is SDCard1, not SDCard. At a guess you have copied the zip to the external card and CWM is looking on the internal memory. Not sure what the options are for plain CWM but look for another card option or move the zip from where you have it. Given the best flash is to wipe everything on the internal memory, the external card is the best location - it won't be wiped.
Another way to do it is to use Odin - extract the zip till you get the MD5 file and flash that via Odin to the phone - you need to put the phone in Download mode to do it. (hold Menu + Vol Down + Power to get to DL mode) There are threads on here with instructions on how to use Odin.

I will stick with JB for now as I like my setup anyway. I know how odin works and CWM was definitely looking at my External SD as my backup was on it. This is the ROM I was trying http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541304 I DL, extracted to a folder on my PC, put onto my micro SD, but alas, nothing to choose from to flash.
Found the Alliance one for N9005, looks real nice, so will give it a shot.
Deleted
Urghhhh why is it after hours of trawling and googling I can't find my answer. I did the alliance ROM (and now know how my first rom stuffed up) how do I get rid of the icon in the top left which shows download rate? Can't find the option anywhere on phone
Edited: Found it myself.
Final bit of noob from me for now. I tried to restore my CWM backup after installing Alliance, alliance overwrote CWM with TWRP, I did a factory reset, but could not restore from backup. It noted my CWM backup, but I could not restore it. Anything I did wrong here?
Edited: Once again from learning I fixed my own issue. Reflashed CWM, restored from todays backup, phone has gone from factory reset to how it was earlier today. Love the nandroid backup.
Hello everyone. I was trying to get Cyanogenmod 11 on my Galaxy S4. I read a guide and followed it to a T, but I guess it must have been a bad guide, and I can't find it now.
At any rate, I have 4.2.2 with NC1, and I used Geohot's TR to get root. I installed SU, and that's working. Then (because I used to use this on my GS3) I installed Rom Toolbox pro, chose to install CWM, and I kept getting errors. So I decided to use another, ROM installer, and flash TWRP.
So now, when I reboot my phone, I just get errors that say "Odin error".
What do I need to do in order to get a custom ROM? I've read in these forums that safestrap is the only way, but I don't want to do this until I know that I can move from what I'm currently at, to safestrap. I don't want to dig my hole any deeper.
Thank you so much.

You can only use Safestrap. Boot into download mode and then exit from it (I forget which button you hold) to get back in to the system. Then install Safestrap after using SELinux Mode Changer. You'll probably also want to find the recovery image for NC1 and flash that. Check the NB1-NC1 keeproot ROM thread you can find in the index for that
If you need anything else, ask here, but next time you have a new question, start it in the q&a section please.

First, thank you for taking the time to reply, and second, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum.

I have seen that everywhere. Out of desperation, is there ANY way I can get CyanogenMod on here?
Secondly, my phone is having issues and I want to restore it to factory settings. When I choose this, it reboots and I get the ODIN error. I then have to power down, then I have to hold down while restarting, then hit cancel, then it boots normally. How do I remedy this?

Give up or get another phone-- NO CM at this time--there is a GE rom in General, I believe, for SafeStrap.
Not sure on other issue, maybe Odin back to stock--someone else may have suddestion--Read up on things in General and Q&A on SafeStrap. And a couple other threads like All Things MK2 etc--:good:

Has to be TouchWiz rom. To me it is not worth the effort. I just stay stock for now.
I was hoping to get some help.
I installed SafeStrap, used SELinux, and then installed GoldenEye Rom on slot 1 after taking a backup of my current rom to my external SD card. I then installed update-supersu and att_nc1_modules through safestrap.
I reboot into system and it just boots into the exact same rom as my stock rom... but the only difference is that my networks don't work. So I've booted back into safestrap and changed my boot device back to stock and all is well.
What step am I missing?
Edit: Yes, I've made sure that Rom Slot 1 is active before booting into it.
Don't use SS so not sure what you missed--
Did you follow this--

Yes, this is the guide I followed.
I've been looking into this a bit more, and it looks like I may need to just overwrite the stock rom slot.

I've done this, but now my phone is just sitting on the Samsung logo for the last 10 minutes or more.
From safestrap - did the factory reset, went through the GE install process. Went to restart the phone, hasn't come back on yet.

You're probably going to have to flash the nb1 tar in Odin and start over again. After flashing in Odin ota to nc1 then towelroot, then safestrap.

So my backup that I made with Satestrap won't work? I'm in the process of restoring that right now.
Do you have time to explain what all of this means?
flash the nb1 tar in Odin?
OTA to NC1?
Does this mean use Odin to get back to Nb1, then use the built in samsung updater to get to nc1, then start again with TR and SS?
I am a noob, so be detailed
Edit: I assume you mean this guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49562527
another thing: restoring my phone within safestrap worked. I'm back on my stock rom. At least my phone's working again.

Use this file in Odin, it's the nb1 tar file. After you download it you'll need to extract it using winrar or 7-zip. You'll get a .tar.md5 file http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149
Use that in Odin pda/pa slot depending on what version of Odin you're using.
The either just ota, over the air, update to nc1 or there is a nb1 to nc1 zip file that can be side loaded in the stock recovery.
Once on nc1 you can use tr to root.

Thank you for the detail. I was able to restore my backup - do I still need to do all of this prior to trying again in safestrap?
I suppose it would increase my chances at success.

If you restored your backup I would try to flash your rom in the stock slot of safestrap first. Only do the Odin if you can't restore first.

So my first attempt, the one that left me in the boot loop, was from the stock slot. Try again?
I just picked up a note 3...
Now being somewhat New to roms and stuff...
I have been following * GALAXY NOTE 3 ROOT * guy on you tube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQbTF7yTJSk <---------------------
I wanted to install a custom rom called Hyperdrive... I am very good at following instructions.
I rooted my phone correctly and now get the Unlock Icon .
I installed The hyperdrive.apk.zip to my Sdcard on the phone...
I installed Safestrap.. Backed up my stock rom
I watched the videos and did every step I was told to and it all worked perfectly.
But this is where I had the issue...after creating a Custom rom slot-1
I clicked install, selected the new Kitkat Hyperdirve zip on there site.
Installed took about 2 mins. Backed out of Safestrap correctly after it said installed complete.
reboot/system ...
Phone reboots .. Shows Samsung galaxie unlock root screen .. then just gos to a black screen of death.
cant tell if the phone is on or not.. have to pull the battery and restart in Up arrow ... middle button and power mode to get back in to stock system recovery...
Can someone please help me get this rom working on my system.. I just wanted to get rid of bloat ware and speed up my phone and customize it to my everyday needs .
my phone is a verizon note 3 Updated with 4.4.2 stock
I only want this rom installed to play it safe.. and please dont try to sell me a different rom or set up thanks guys n gals !
* love the note 3 by the way *
Jayson
Usa,Ca
Update * I was able to wipe Hydrive off the phone and reload stock rom.. back on track but What are my options to installing hyperdrive or a replica rom like it ? Useing Safestrap only

In order to run a 4.4 rom you need to flash the NC2 kernel via Odin. The files and instructions can be found here. Just substitute the Hyperdrive rom or whatever 4.4 based rom you've chosen in the corresponding steps in the instructions. Also you only need to do this once unless you reset the device via Odin, the kernel will stick so flashing a different rom won't be as complicated.
Also it is recommended to use only the Stock slot in Safestrap because of battery/data drain issues. Just make sure to wipe before installing so everything installs correctly.

Just follow the steps I sent you in the pm. No need to use the stock deodex rom.
Most custom roms will be deodex, all this means is that an app is one part. Normal an odex rom an app will be two parts, and located in two separate locations in memory, it helps which load times under certain demands but hinders customization.
As for the stock slot it is okay to wipe, and if you made a backup you can wipe and restore it. If you didn't make a backup you can always download a stock rom. Just try to think of your original stock rom is exactly that, A Rom, nothing more nothing less.

I think I missed the juice of the fix but can you help me? I had the same issue as him, but ran what I thought would fix it but I just see the boot screen continousely since doing ODIN N900v_NC2_FW_Updated.tar.md5
Since doing this, I lost my safestrap and just see those colored balls loading as it looks like a bootloop

If you've lost Safestrap you will need to reset your device via Odin and start over. Pulling the battery will get you oit of the bootloop, then boot into download mode (volume down + home + power button).
On your computer you need to open Odin and then connect your phone to your computer. Load the stock tar file found here in the AP slot. Give Odin a couple minutes to load the process and once the Start button is available click it and let Odin run. It will restart your device when it is finished. Just a heads up, if you are currently on NC4 you must use that firmware you can not go backwards.
From this point you will need to reroot, install busybox and Safestrap again. From there follow the instructions found here to get on the NC2 kernel.
If you followed all these steps correctly you can now flash any 4.4 based rom for the retail Note 3.
it works!
