MK2 Update. Should I? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I'm using MF3 now. i don't want to root again after update. so i'm asking if SuperSU's survival mode will prevent unrooting during the update, and also I'm thinking of staying MF3 until KitKat, unless MK2 is very important or fabulous update (such as bootloader unlock).

ryujeff said:
I have no idea how AT&T can get benefit by locking bootloaders. Why do they want it locked? They also said they are going to lock bootloaders for further devices. Does that mean AT&T will lock KitKat's bootloader? KitKat's my only hope unless Dan Rosenberg releases unlocking method. When is he gonna release the method? It's been a while. I really want custom ROMs. Safestrap's choices are too limited and eats up my storage.
Sadly, I bought the device right after MF3. I'm not updating to MK2 in order to not encounter another bootloader problem.

AT&T locks bootloaders so that they can guarantee everyone will have and use exactly what they give access to. It makes it harder for us to get rid of their restrictions such as locking tethering and using apps they hide in the play store. It keeps us on their stock system where they can have more control basically. KitKat will be locked, just like everything else was/is. Don Rosenberg's unlock method has been out for a while, it's only an exploit known as loki and was patched by MF3. It was never a full unlock.

Thanks for making time to reply my question. I've got a little problem. I used survive mode in supersu and tried to update into MK2, but at 25% during the installation, it goes off and fails everytime. I uninstalled safestrap recovery just in case but the installation fails. Is there a way to flash MK2 on MF3 with Odin? What if i cant update forever? So im planning to factory reset and unroot if there is no other way

SuperSu known for updating failure... so It work better if you coming from mf3 .... u need to flash to mf3 stock firmware by flashing mf3.tar from my update. Zip thread. ... Or u can just flash the mk2 full tar files. ... u would end up on mk2.....If you check my other thread about update.zip.....u would see couples peoples confirmed work ......... Goodluck

I might be wrong here as im not the sharpest tool in the shed, but i do believe there is a new post like this every single day and all get the same response. There is no MF3 image available for flash through odin or otherwise. Search = Friend.
If you repeat three times "owaa tagoo siam" it might magically appear.
Not happening my friend. Try going into download mode and then press down to cancel. It might boot normally then. (worked for me at one point with a similar issue)

It seems useless
So did you try it or just say its useless? There are a couple other methods that have been shown to work as well.

You are going to have to wait for Samsung to release the MF3 on kies or a leak of the tar to happen.

Its been stated 1000 times, this will not work with MF3 at this time. Using Kies to try and restore Firmware if you are on MF3 or using ODIN at best will not work and could possibly make things worse. There are a couple of exceptions using modified files (you can find them in the forum) but other than those exceptions absolutely KIES and ODIN will not help to restore Firmware if a phone is already on MF3.

No, definitely didn't upset me. My phone works and i know what I am doing. However, you probably would have upset the OP if he would have tried your suggestion and screwed his phone up worse. It would have been his own fault because there is always risk when it comes to doing anything to our phones, but being a bit more cautious when making suggestions to people would be a good thing also. Especially when there is already so much information about this in the AT&T S4 forums.
The video you linked to, once again, will do no good. ODIN will not work for restoring firmware on an MF3 phone at this time period.

i know ODIN will not work for restoring firmware on an MF3 phone at this time, but this link was just an example. maybe in the future someone can do something work with MF3....cuz at my work now we can't sim unlock or fix imei with this bulid MF3, i have tried octopus box, nspro, and setool3. non of them was able to sim unlock MF3, even the secret menu not exist in MF3....
i asked the riff jtag rep, if i can resurrection I337 MF3 and unlock the bootloader with riff box. he hasn't responded yet.

Many things have been tried with this already.
Look up a poster called "Aou". His posts will help shed light on the subject. Adam Outler also has worked a lot on the issue. The entire MF3 OTA was torn down and part by part tried. Once the MF3 bootloaders are applied, it simply can not be rolled back. There are software and hardware reasons for this, but it has all been tried. The result every time is Hard brick that JTAG can not fix at this time.
Once the full MF3 firmware has been released, maybe this will change, but it is doubtful. The MF3 bootloaders will still be the same. Without Samsung's signing key, the bootloader cannot be modified.
Once Samsung releases the full MF3 firmware (for ODIN and Kies) it will hopefully enable people to flash or restore back to a factory MF3 state, but we will still not be able to roll-back to AMDL. Maybe the full MF3 firmware release will include more files to work with...but again, it is doubtful.
As of now, the only way to sim unlock a phone on MF3 is to use a code (from AT&T or other). Hopefully someone will find a method that will work with MF3...but it hasn't happened yet.
You have good ideas about what should be done but it is important that you look and see what has already been tried and what is known at this point. Hopefully, people will still try to modify and work with MF3 (maybe something that hasn't been tried yet), but it will be building on what has been tried so far.
So, basically, at this time ODIN and KIES will not work with MF3, except for the modified files used without the bootloader. Neither will restore the phone to stock or can be used to roll back the firmware.
Hopefully, when Samsung releases the MF3 firmware, people will be able to restore their phones through ODIN and KIES, but will still be stuck on MF3.
In order to do any more, another work-around (such as the LOKI exploit) will need to be found or someone at Samsung is going to have to release or leak the encryption key.
That is pretty much all for now.

Well Thank YOU ALOT.. you saved me TONS OF WORRIES. That trick got me out of a boot -> recovery -> odin mode loop. I thought I was going to have to confess to ATT and beg for them to fix my phone. I wont be touching my recovery again for a while. Not until a confirmed method and hugely tested recovery/custom rom method comes out.
Thank you! I knew that little bit of advice would help somebody one day.

Need help with proper way to update.

I have been searching both here and other forums looking for guidance on this issue. I have MF3 rooted and i would like to upgrade to 4.3. When i rooted i got a little delete happy and bkew out a lot of packages instead of freezing them as i should (i didnt have Titanium Pro, i do now) . I honestly can't remember everything i blew out but i know my phone runs a lot better without them. My issue is the OTA fails when i try to install it and with all of the issues ive read about MF3 I dont know how i should proceed. Do i need to flash back to stick MF3 with Odin? Can i factory reset, root, update and hope survival mode works?
I know this makes me look like a complete toolbag but hey, i screwed up and need a little help.
Thank you

Use the ODIN MF3 files....ODIN your phone back to stock. This is what I did. I also rooted MF3 via SDCard method....restored my phone to how i want it. Used Supersu to do full unroot, then go to OTA update and wait 5+ hours to download the 727 mb file from the horrible AT&T servers, then install update.
Instead of "unrooting" you can try survival mode which has been said to keep root for some, but not for others.
Good luck!

[Q] Flashing to MK2

I recently got a SGH-i337 S4 as a gift from a relative, but i'm not sure if it was rooted. I checked with two apps, Root Checker Basic and Root Status, and they are saying my phone is rooted. I'll take these into consideration, but I am not able to contact my relative to ask if they really did root it or not, and if they unrooted it.
Anyways, I want to flash my galaxy to the latest stock firmware, and I have downloaded the the MK2 tar files. Do i just proceed and connect my phone and press start, and then my phone will be essentially fresh-out-of-the-store firmware? Using Odin, I do not have to be rooted, so because of the previous ambiguity, am i able to use Odin without knowing for sure?

Yes, you can use the Odin files to update to MK2, but mind you there is NO way to ever go back to MF3. If you have any sort of need of custom rom's I recommend staying with MF3 until the MK2 branches grow some more. But if you plan on using the phone complete stock go ahead and upgrade, your still be able to reroot and get Safestrap your just have a small amount of TW 4.3 roms.

A few questions. Do you know what firmware you are on right now ? Is it MF3 or MDL ? i only ask because with MDL you are able to try out MK2 firmware (not using odin) instead of having to use Odin to flash the firmware.
I was unable to determine from your post if you want it rooted or not. If the app says you are rooted then you more than likely are. Is there a superuser app on there or superSU ? If you aren't interested in being rooted then I suggest you avoid odin to update and go the Kies way to update to the new firmware.
Let us know your intentions so we can best help. Thanks !

Flashed custom recovery, WiFi broken

I have an SGH-I337 with Android version 4.4. I have the Knox bootloader (sadface). I attempted to root this phone previously using Saferoot but this caused problems (relevant thread).
I can connect to the data network but I can't get the wifi to work. It won't even turn on. As soon as I tap the switch it goes back off.
Please help.
You'll probably have to use the NB1 full ODIN to fix it. Make sure to back up your internal storage and anything that doesn't sync to your Google or Samsung account.

Ok, I'll try that.
While I have your attention, I have a couple other questions...
- Do you know if this phone is actively being worked on by developers? As in, are exploits being researched to unlock the bootloader?
- Can the phone be rooted with an update? What is the preferred method to do this? Recovery (I have teamwin) or ADB?
EDIT: Is it safe to flash just the modem or would you recommend the full phone firmware. I found a thread here with firmware.

The phone is actively being worked on, most progress is kept between PM's or in a thread in the Verizon S4 section (they're in the same boat as us and chances are an exploit for one will work on both).
The phone can not be rooted with an update because we can't sign it once we add the su binary.
You can't flash the modem as those are recovery flashable zips and if you're on NB1 you can't get root or recovery without a more involved method first (no simple one click).

Thanks much for verifying that for me. I'm content to wait until a solution is found. Just relieved to hear that the smarties are still tinkering with it. :good:
I guess I don't have TeamWin then? That's odd because after my failed root attempt, it was after I tried flashing teamwin that the phone booted back on after being softbricked. I guess that was coincidence then. At any rate, I will try to flash the NB1 firmware to fix the wifi. At least I have data. :silly:
WiFi issues with OTA firmware too
Just thought I'd add that the OFW has WiFi issues as well, at least for a few if us. When I updated OTA to 4.4 the WiFi worked for a couple of weeks then stopped working (reboot will allow it to work for a while until the unit sleeps, then it won't toggle). I tried the Odin tar.md5 image and the same thing crops up. This thread is relevant: [Q] OFW 4.4.2 WiFi Not Turning On. I like KitKat, hopefully we can figure out what the problem is.

[Q] Noob Question on upgrading to 4.4.2 for Canadian Variant SGH-I337M

My apology if this has been asked as I've scanned through a few with not much luck.
Came across this and i went to sammobile and dl the TELUS 4.4.2 firmware and judging by this article, this is an non-wipe install via Odin3.
I know it is best to wipe and start fresh but hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction as I would like to upgrade without wiping.
Thanks a bunch!

You cant update your phone without whipping your device if using odin unless its an OTA cause if you do you will most like end up in boot llop thus just backup and then flash using odin, what i assume from the article is that it wont wipe your internal sd card but will wipe your data i.e applications and settings etc.
Depends where you are trying to get to..... if you are not rooted on 4.3 and just want to go to 4.4.2, I would just use Kies. If you are rooted and want to go to 4.4.2 then yes this looks like the right method. Things to concider are.... do you want to be able to go back to 4.3 at anytime is so, you really shouldn't use this method as I believe it is going to update your bootloader which means no going back... If you intend on rooting anyway, I would suggest using CF- auto root, added a custom recovery and flashing Mapleleaf rom..... plus the NC1 modem... this is mostly stock, you will have root access and retain the 4.3 bootloader should you want to revert back to 4.3.......this will trip you Knox so if you want to keep warrenty well this isn't a good way to go either... unless of course you have already tripped it...
