D801 Slow wifi - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
So lets get straight to it. Im rooted using IO , freegeed w/twrp, running stock rooted 10g rom. I have tried several roms and none of them on a speed test show me able to get over 3.8 mbps yet I get 8 mbps upload. I checked my pc, 30+ mbps download on there. Checked my gf's (completely untouched by me lol) g2 and she has the same problem its like it capped at 3.8 mbps on the wifi. 4g im getting 30 mbps. I am using comcasts phone/modem/router pos and when i checked i saw its 2.4ghz so i selected 2.4ghz on the phone along with turned wifi battery saver off. I have pretty much tried all I can think of. So now i need your help! I switched over from my lg og to the g2 and the og worked fine on this router.

Maybe try changing the channel on your router to 11?

thanks for the reply, but did not work.

Is it an old router?Try your phone with another router.

I'm guessing since its Comcast crap and only 2.4 ghz no 5 option that it is old. Lol. Just not sure why my og worked fine with this router, my brothers og pro is fine. But not our g2's

I don't need to go anywhere today and its cold out I don't want to just go to see atm. I'm wondering if I use my gfs g2 as a hotspot if I could see if wifi works that way. To bad she's at work lol
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Cool, gf came home, turned on mobile hot spot, 30 mbps. So it is this pos Comcast router. I wonder if I call them if they will give me a newer router. But is there a special feature needed by a router for these phones? I'm confused lol. Why only g2's on this router?
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

@ripbabey Turn to WPA TKIP only. The G2 hates the Technicolor AES+TKIP combo. Fixed mine. Weird thing is, works fine in AES on my SB6141 and the Arris. No further idea about it. Something just isn't getting along between the two. I'm not technical enough to dig deeper.

I'll check that out thanks
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

You're welcome. It will work. I about returned the Technicolor because of this.

That actually improved some speed Mr not technical enough lol. I'm getting 12-15 mbps now which is matching my computer. So now when my speed picks back up from Comcast I'll see if I get any higher. Thank you so much!
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I was getting over 20, which matches, winter weather is hindering my connection. How I miss underground wiring.

Lol. So far so good, was about to just go get a router. Now it looks like I don't need to.

Slow wifi?

I think the wifi on my G2 is acting up. I don't know if these are normal speeds for phone wifi, but here goes:
Right now I'm getting 24 Mbps when I'm about 30 feet away from my router and behind one wall. I'm on a linksys wireless N router. I can get you the model number if you need it.

I'm not quite understanding your question? Is your G2's wifi downlink 24mbps because that isn't slow at all.
24mbps is what's listed when I go into settings and tap on my network.

24Mbps to an N router 30ft away? Yeah that's really slow...
I had problems downloading files from my server on my LAN via wifi... it was ridiculously slow.

Anyone else experiencing slow download speeds?

So me and both of my friend had trouble loading a YouTube video, it was so slow and kept pausing. We both have the Nexus 4 and were on wifi by the way. So we tried using another friends S III and it loaded the video fine. When I ran a side by side speed test he got a 19 mbs download and I could only pull 2. Is this happening to anyone else?
Edit: we were on the same wifi

No I kept it on but earlier in the day I was getting perfectly good speeds. Like sometimes my speed is fine and then sometimes it's slow.

It obviously shouldn't be that way. Since this is wifi, try a mix of different networks. Lord knows, this wouldn't be the first phone with wifi issues with certain network security types right out of the gate (or wifi problems in general).

Yeah I switched to another network and it went fast again. Was just wondering if anyone knew the cause of the sudden slowdowns though.

On T Mo, I have had it flip from H+ to 3G but all in all in my speed test without changing anything APN wise I consistently get around 16mbps down. You tube and such flies (HQ) and even on wifi on Xfinitys basic package on a G band router I have no issues at all with wifi and YouTube in HD. Sorry, I'm no help but I haven't had an issue.
Oh my bad, I forgot to mentioned that we were on the same WiFi.

I've also had this on WIFI, thought it was my router, may have to play with router settings a bit to see what's happening.
Its only really noticeable when I try to play a youtube video, although had it other times too.
Also switching to mobile data for youtube as its faster!

Update!!! I figured it out its googles servers they are overloaded this is what makes me think that. Play store loads slow as well as YouTube! Not our phones!

I'm seeing this issue as well and it's occurring on 2 completely different wireless networks: at home and in the office. I've tried tweaking wifi settings on both my Nexus 4 and on my router at home but nothing has fixed the slow wifi speeds. And none of my other Android devices are experiencing this issue (Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Xoom).
I called Google Play support just now and they didn't have any info to offer on whether or not this is a known issue, they just asked if I'd tried restarting my phone and/or done a factory reset. After I verified that I'd already done both things and neither action resolved the issue they said I could exchange the phone, so that's what I decided to do.
If this problem is indeed being caused by faulty hardware in the phone, hopefully the replacement phone will be in a better state and work properly. <crosses fingers>
It's the router that needs to be updated, not the phones. Obviously if you're is broken though that is irrelevant.
Can't say why that is, but I read a thread awhile back detailing it, I will try and locate it.

I think remydlc is referring to download speed over a cellular data connection, and not WiFi (which is what this thread's topic is really about). At least that's the way I read it...
Is this related... I have noticed compared to my old S2 and iPad my nexus has fewer bars and the signal can drop if held in the left hand. The connection speed can be much less too.
Not good.
could it possibly be trying multiple networks? I have a dual band 5 and 2.4 but they have different ssids - my initial set up was to the 5 ghz but when the google restore happened it populated my 2.4 ssid and pw. I found I had to "forget" all my configured access points and just set up my 5 ghz one and everything was smoking

I don't think this is causing the issue (at least for my phone). I've had the slow WiFi speeds on 2 completely different networks, with one being the campus network of the university I work at. Also, I've tried using my Nexus 4 on 2 different routers at home, one of which can do both 2.4/5.0 ghz and when I tried manually setting the phone to just use either the 2.4 ghz or the 5.0 ghz network it made no difference; the phone's WiFi speed was still very slow.
I'm feeling pretty convinced at this point that it's something faulty with the phone. I pretty much tore down and rebuilt my home network yesterday and tried all different types of settings to test the result on my Nexus 4 and nothing made the WiFi speed any better on the phone.

Poor WiFi Range

I'm on my second Nexus 4 and still can't get over how poor the WiFi range is on these phones. Both of my N4s have had the same results. When I'm in an area of my house about 20-25 feet from the router I get 0-1 bars of WiFi, where my laptop and PS3 both get 80-100% connectivity. Every other smartphone I've owned has had better WiFi reception than this. Anyone have suggestions?

Try changing the security settings on your router to use a different protocol. For some reason that made a big difference for me. Generally I've found the WiFi range to be fairly good.

There hasn't been any security on either router I've been using so I know that isn't the problem. Thanks though.

I'm getting the exact opposite. I've noticed a huge difference with reception versus my Galaxy Nexus.

Also experiencing a similar problem. I don't think I've ever seen 4 bars on wifi since my 3 weeks of owning the phone. Almost all the time it's at 2 bars, even when other devices right next to me will have full signal.

Are you on 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz band? My N4 refuses to work on the 2.4Ghz band. When it did connect, I would get less than 1MB connection link. Switched over to 5Ghz band, and I get a consistent 72MB connection. It even picks it up out to the middle of the street. Try changing bands if you have a capable router. Hopefully the next update will solve the WiFi problems this phone has.

You guys should give wifi analyzer a try. I it might show that there are other signals on the same band?
I personally get poor wifi signal, but with wifi analyzer I saw that there are a total of 13 networks nearby

Try flashing a aftermarket kernel such as Franco Kernel. You can change the WiFi algorithm as well to see if it improves at all (changable with his app, Franco Kernel updater)
A lot of people reported that R19 and newer fixed their N4's wifi problems.

I get decent range on both 2.4 and 5 GHz ranges. Dont have it set on channels and allow the router to set that. Obviously do to the higher freq I get less range on the 5 GHz range but use this for my phone and my wife's S3 as it will run on it as well. Keeping the 2.4 side as clutter free as possible. Love my dlink dual band router.

The bars really are not a good method of determining anything. My WiFi works just as good as any of my other devices, iPod,iPhone, nexus 7, touchpad and more. I am not looking at the bars though but rather just going by how it works and it works fine for me. I can go as far as my mail box at the end of my driveway..

Being throttled while connected to VZW hotspot

I have no sim for my Nexus 4. I tether to my VZW Galaxy Nexus. However, it seems I'm being throttled. While connected I run speed test. It starts slow then jumps up to normal speeds.. 20mbs. When I download or get on the web my speed is very slow. To download a 120mb file takes at least 30 min.
When using my works WiFi, speeds are normal. Downloads are as they should be. It's something to do with the hotspot. I've searched for another thread with this issue and can't find any answers.
I've also tethered my Nexus 7 and laptop to my Galaxy Nexus and speeds are normal. This only happens with the Nexus 4. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated... Sorry to add another thread in this maze.

Man, I just can't find a fix for this. Been through many different ROMs on both phones, searched the net and settings and can find no answer. I put an active att sim card in to no avail. Such an odd situation. Unfortunately this is my only access to speeds above .5 mbs at home. Again, any ideas would be great.

Who said I bought it? It's the only way to get wifi at work. Cant get AT&T or T-mobile signals in the building
I have unlimited data on VZW and LTE everywhere I go. However, at my home, no one offers home internet besides satellite. I get much better speeds on VZW hotspot.
I love nexus devices. I wanted the nexus 4. So I bought one. Luckily however impractical, I can afford all this. T-Mobile and att have no service at my home, so getting rid of VZW isn't an option.
I do now have att and T-Mobile plans. Having an active Sim didn't make a difference. I didn't think it would but I held out hope Lol.

I am having a similar issue with my Nexus 4 (with Tmobile Sim) connecting to my Hotspot on my Thunderbolt (Verizon). When connected to my hotspot, my download speeds are stuck around .5 mbps but upload speeds are normal. The Nexus 4 has no issues at all when connecting to my wifi at home or at work, and other devices connected to my Hotspot have no issues. My friend who has his Nexus 4 flashed to CM 10 (also with TMo sim) has no issues when connected to his hotspot on his Note 2 (Verizon).

Slow Wi-Fi on MF3?

Here are my specs:
Phone
16gb galaxy s4
At&t
Not rooted
Touchwiz
Android 4.2
MF3 baseband
Router
Apple airport extreme
Auto channels
WPA password protected
I have seen some threads with the s4 running slow on dlink WiFi, but I have an airport extreme base station at home. My phone rings perfectly on 4g/LTE, but nothing seems to work on Wi-Fi. YouTube is slow as hell, play store takes forever to load. A few weeks ago, everything was working great over Wi-Fi too, so I wanted to ask if anyone else is currently having this issue?
My wife's iPod touch works fine on the same Wi-Fi, as well as a thinkpad and macbook air.
I've already tried disabling Wi-Fi power saving mode, but haven't touched any other settings. Any thoughts on what to do? I was thinking about taking it to best buy and switching out the phone, maybe a bad phone? (Not likely because it was working fine a few weeks ago)
