Just switched from Sprint to Verizon - Voicemail question - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend just switched from Sprint to Verizon. On Sprint we have our own voicemail app and the voicemails download right to the phone at no extra cost. Do you really have to pay $4 a month on Verizon for this capability or is there a way to activate on device voicemail without paying the extra fee?
Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Jack

You have to pay $4/month for VISUAL voicemail, yes But like others states, use google voice if you're not comfortable with that. Exact same features, cross compatibility. Just make sure to follow the call-forwarding instructions for google voice..... I don't know how many people can't figure out how to get it to work because they think installing the app and following the instructions makes it work...

I agree with using google voice. The translations are quite comical. They are no way perfect but you get the idea of what was said. You can listen from any computer and if you add the extension on chrome you get notifications on the browser.
In regards to prev. post, ignore the warning about the carrier in the setup dialog. It just means that you have to dial the *7... that google gives you when you setup the voicemail account.
One warning you do have to have data/internet connection to get voicemail since it retrieves it over voip and not 1g voice/calling. Which isn't a big deal unless you are deep in the woods or roaming on unfriendly territory like Thumb Cellular in Michigan.

does the vvm only work if you have it added to your bill? everytime ive tried to use it it says i cannot use it on my phone and to have it added to the plan, yet i have the unlimited family plan with everything included. t-mobile said it should work, but it never has. so i usually just uninstall it and use google voice...not to mention i love having emails of every voicemail i get. i have always wanted to try visual voicemail, but just cant get it working for me...any clue?

I posted on the wrong thread

Verizon tab and txt msgs.

Nice that verizon has txt msgs on the tab, but not nice they don't tell you they charge 25ยข per! The rep didn't even know they charged extra for it! That is just down right wrong not to tell the customer!

Yes, I've paid for a couple of spams too, I looked for a way to turn messageing off, but haven't been able to get it below 10 messages per conversation.
I called customer service and asked them to block my sms number and I just use google voice. Works great and it's free.

I had the same problem with tmobile. I am supposed to get unlimited text and 5gig data, but they were charging me 25 cents per text.
When i called the acted like they didnt know anything and took two months to fix.

Verizon to Verizon is only free with the non-$5 text packages.
I just installed "Sync SMS" and its pretty cool. It sends texts from your phone to your tablet via Dropbox. You can send from tablet through your phone number as well. Cost 3 bucks, but certainly good enough for me at the moment.

What is worse is you cannot call and have it disabled. You have to pay $5 a month for some family addon that lets you limit your kids text messages or something

If you have prepaid and don't keep a balance it will be effectively disabled. I haven't tried when i have money in the account but it told me "Not enough in your prepaid account" when i tried once.

Just call customer care, and ask for the retentions department. Tell them you are pissed that you have no way of monitoring if you are going to go over your minutes. I got the family addon added free for life.

GV number on nexus 4

This might be a little off-topic (apologies), but I plan on switching from sprint to TMO prepaid with the nexus 4. I don't care about my sprint #, but I have a google voice number I'd like to use. Just wanted to check and see if this is possible. tia
Of course its possible! Google voice app for android. Port you real number to Google for $20 unless you really don't care.

Before porting your number and getting in contract with keep in mind that google voice is currently free till end of 2012. Google always push it a year ahead but dont promise that it will remain free for ever.
Secondly and importantly; no emergency calling ie no 911

You mean the gmail calling or groove IP on your phone is free until end of 2012, right? I heard nothing about the rest of the GV service not being free any more. IE texts and phone/voicemail forwarding.

Free ATT or Tmobile Sim with Monthly Plan - Straight Talk

-----Update 27 Nov-----
This coupon code no longer works. If I find another one I will update this thread.
I have now used this service with google voice for over 2 weeks with great service. I have had the same speeds and coverage as I did with my att phone. I have not used enough data to get notified or limited in speed, if and when this happens I will update my thread.
There is one issue with straight talk and any MVNO it seems. I used two google voice numbers (personal, work) and I turn off the voicemail forwarding on my phone so that the voicemail for each works correctly (Otherwise both GV numbers would forward to the same voicemail account). Straight talk does not have the ability to change the voicemail forwarding phones. My workaround for now is to extend the number of rings out to where GV will forward to voicemail (I am in process of testing this now).
To use two GV numbers on one phone you set both as home numbers and just use the app for texts from one. There are more detailed ways to forwards texts from the second phone but if you want this info PM and ask or search for it as it is available elsewhere.

I see these posts regularly and had some questions. I have at&t service now. Is it as easy as placing the sim card into my phone and go? Will everything work like it did on at&t? What's the data transfer like? I'm really liming the idea of two phones unlimited everything for $90 as opposed to $165 for 700 mins unlimited text and calls to any mobile but only 2 GB of data. Do I need to flash anything to make everything work properly?

you don't have to flash anything. just gotta change the apn settings to st and you're good to go. the SIM packet has the apn settings that you change in network settings.
Straight Talk data connection is the same as ATT would be in your area, except, NO LTE. You will not grey LTE with straight talk. And don't count on using much more than 2gb of data either, I near they send warning texts but don't actually have a what to cut off your data.
I've been on Straight Talk ATT for 3 months and love it. Just know it's limitations. I've never gone over 600mb data in my life though. I work when I'm at work, not much time to stream videos, the rest of the time I'm at home on wifi. Also ATT sucks in my area.

You also need an unlocked or att locked phone. The Sim is recognized as an att sim.
I will add my experience here once I've used it. I tried T-Mobile 100 min 5gb plan and got rid of it because of bad indoor reception (I was Always on edge inside).

Thanks. So is that the only benefit of unlocking the phone? I'm rooted and running a wicked sweet custom ROM already. Only thing left is unlocking.

It looks like you have an AT&T Captivate. You don't need to unlock your phone if it's AT&T branded.
It is. I gathered that from my searches. Just wondered if that was the only benefit of unlocking my phone, being able to carry it to any gsm carrier.

The only benefit of unlocking is to be able to use other carriers. But to repeat you DO NOT need to unlock to use straight talk on your att phone.

So if straight talk cuts off ur data for usage, call them, ask them to define unlimited, then ask them to define false advertising lawsuit, after I did this on my thrid disconect, I have never received a warning or been cutoff. And I use more than 16gb a month

No, could be because I modded the prl alot. I always tried to keep the best one out on there so I got the most towers possable and the one next to my house about .2 miles away instead of the default thats about 1.3 miles away

If you have a micro sim lying around you can use it as a template and cut your old sim card down to a micro. I did it with a pair of sharp sewing scissors and it's been working fine for me.
Also, unlocking my smartphones has always benefited me in that it allowed me to sell at a higher price.
