Unlock Lumia 520 - Windows Phone 8 General

Thought it would be good to pass on my experience.
Microsoft Store (online too, with free shipping) has the Lumia 520 on sale for $59. It is part of their 12 days of Christmas sales event and extended a month (12/13 to 1/12.) AND they just extended it into February.
So I ordered one. Went to the AT&T Store and picked up a SIM. The day it arrived I put the SIM in. One hour later I used their online Unlock Request Form (http://www.att.com/deviceunlock/) and 60 hours later received via email the Unlock Code (yes, the code unlocked it just fine.) Note that when you fill out the form, you need to put the IMEI number in first. If you put the phone number in first it errors out because the number has not been in service long enough to allow unlock.
The "rules" are an establish customer needs to have a 100% owned phone connected to the AT&T network for 60 days and for a pay-as-you-go customer the wait time is 6 months. Apparently because I bought directly from Microsoft who is buying Nokia (bought directly from the manufacturer) those times were waved. My phone had been connected to the AT&T network for less than 72 hours.
FYI, I am an established customer and added the SIM to an existing account. So someone else will have to try with a goPhone SIM and see if it works as well.

If i give you my IMEI, can you request an unlocking code for me? for this same lumia 520 ATT ?

I quoted this in the 520 development thread. Hopefully it will get seen more there.

MDA Pro For Sale

Ladies and Gents,
I have an T- Mobile MDA Pro for sale, brand new, boxed. As i already have an EXEC, this phone is up for sale.
Please PM me if you are interested
It is listed on ebay, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9126315634&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MESE:IT&rd=1
I am willing to end the auction early for 375pounds + 11.99 Shipping.
Cheers,
You really should add the fact that whoever buys it will need to have a t-mobile sim to use it since it can't be unlocked at present.
thanks for that shuflie!
can they not be unlocked at all? i'm so used to popping different sim's in my exec.
cheers,
Adam
They can, but it costs 100 euros with t-mobile
unlocking the mda pro
after you have paid the 1st months invoice, you can ask for the unlock code from T-Mobile UK - if you got it from them. Cost me 20gbp ISTR
Did they let you do that without paying off the rest of your contract? Very nice of whoever it was that gave you the unlock code but I've seen stories on here of others that have tried but couldn't get the unlock without canceling their contract and paying off the remainder of it.
adamchahl: If you can do this without having to pay of your contract it would probably increase the value of your MDA pro to be able to say it was unlocked in your auction.
Yeah, guess its worth a try, i will ring t-mobile tommorrow.
Will let you know how i get on.
Thanks,
nope, did not have to pay for the rest of the contract.
Contact T-Mobile customer services. Explain that you want to transfer your numbers from your old (voda/orange) sim to your shiny new mda pro. They will add the cost of the handling fee to your next bill. You tell them your imei number. Unlock code arrived a week later.
Note you get a 10 digit number, prefixed by two zeros and then eight numbers. Just enter the eight numbers, leaving out the first two zeros.
Worked a treat. ABSOLUTELY ZERO HASSLE.
T-Mobile UK 18 month contract phone ... still got my contract, 100 minutes a month and 40Mb a month data. Very happy with the service.
T-Mobile quoted my £15 to unlock the MDA Pro, however they mentioned that it can take up to 28 days for the code to come from HTC.
I will be more than willing to supply this unlock code for free to any purchesor when it arrives, so the phone will be unlocked.
I realise that there's a huge element of trust with doing things that way, so if it doesnt sell, i will just put it up for sale when the code comes through!
Cheers for your help!

Sim Unlock the Tmobile Wing...

Ive got an extra Wing I want to use on Cingular. Anyway to sim unlock this thing easily?
You can just call TMobile Customer service (611) and request the unlocking code and procedure. They will send it to you as long as you have been with them for awhile. Just tell th e CS you need to travel overseas.
http://cgi.ebay.com/UNLOCK-T-MOBILE...ryZ43312QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
here is a $25 unlock offer
actually you dont have to be a tmobile customer. all you have to do is buy the phone. its stated under the DRMA(digital rights millenium act) that they have to unlock the phone at the customers request.
So how can they enforce a 90 day minimum wait after start of contract?
Or can they?
T-Mobile unlocked
I called T-Mobile yesterday, asked them to unlock my Wing. They took my phone info (IMEI) and today I got an email with the unlock code. Just put in a Cingular Sim put the code and ready to go. the best way to do it. I also have a T-mobile MDA and because I was willing to do testing with this device I used the steps to unlocked in Wizards forums. It worked excellent...
Just call T-mobile...The best way to go.
AT&T gives subsidy codes over the phone.. T-Mobile has a 24 turn around time.. That's what I'm trying to figure out why
My relative was told to wait 90 days, no exceptions...
An alternative is :
www.imei-check.co.uk
I've heard mixed reviews about that site ... so use at your own risk.
The link from ebay is flaunting a much lower price.
Anyone try them yet? Any info? Would really be a pain to wait 3 month...

I'm sorry but that is completely wrong.
Have you used this item on Ebay? Did it well ?
Wind didn't allow an unlock, a 30 dollar service was used...
Not sure which one...
I just sim unlocked my wing. I called about it on Sunday and I got the unlock code on Wednesday (I got the confirmation email on Monday, but it said they had to wait for HTC).

[Q] Walmart Family Mobile

I was at my local Wally-World (WalMart) last night and noticed that they are now offering another pre-paid cellular option called WalMart Family Mobile (using T-Mobiles' Network).
I currently have a G1 and an HD2 (Both T-Mobile branded as T-Mobile USA). Will I need to call T-Mobile to acquire unlock codes for this phones to use on the WFM services?
I have searched the Internet, and the responses are 50/50. About half saying yes I will need unlock codes, the other half saying that I won't need them.
So, I took the next logical step and contacted the WFM Customer Support line. I called 6 times...3 of the representatives said I will not need to unlock them, 2 said I will, and one was unsure if I need to or not.
Does anyone here have any experience regarding WFM and T-Mobile branded phones that are still sim-locked?
Well I have had no personal experience with sim unlocking my HD2, what IO can tell you though is if you will have to get it unlocked to to use the WMF, you will have to get a unlock code. I suggest you do this if you can, call T-Mobile customer service while you are still a T-Mobile costumer (I see under your sig you are on T-Mobile) and tell them you are going out of country some where for business reasons or vacation and want to get a sim card to use a local prepaid local service while you are there so you need a sim unlock code for your HD2 and G1. It is up to you what you tell them but seeing you have two phones you want to sim unlock I would say vacation so you can say you and your wife will be able to use your phones while on vacation. I say contact T-Mobile while you are still a customer because you have to be a customer for them to give you a code, plus T-Mobile will give you the code for free and you will not have to pay for a code from one of the many sites you can buy a code from, plus you will be guaranteed the codes will be valid. Next, after you have the codes in hand, I would go to Wal-Mart and purchase a months worth of the prepaid service for the WMF but tell the Wal-Mart employee you want to use you HD2 or G1, you decide which one as this is a test, as your phone so you just need a sim card for your phone. I have not checked this WMF out myself but hopefully you do noy have to buy a phone to get a sim card. Once you have said sim card put it in your phone and see if you get service, if you do not get service you will have to enter the unlock code to get service.
I am telling you to do this cause if the WMF uses T-Mobiles network then it is a chance you will not need the codes. But then again it is a chance you will need the codes also. So as you said the way I see it you have a 50/50 shot at having to unlock your HD2 and G1. It is better to go at this being prepared than to go into this and not be prepared. Best of luck with your endeavor and please post back here when you have a definitive answer so others can maybe have this question answered.
One more thing if you are doing this because of the impending buy out of T-Mobile by AT&T, thjen it will probable be in vein as you said the WMF uses T-Mobile's network.
I contacted T-Mo to get my unlock code 'just in case'. I did that right after I posted the initial post here. They say I should have it within 24 hours. Here's hoping that I actually get it. (I contacted them a years ago to get an unlock code for one of my Blackberries and never got it).
Anyways, once I get the unlock code, I'll just print the e-mail and take it with me to Walmart when I go get the $25 activation kit (IE: Sim Card).
Walmart says on their site that you can use your existing phone rather than buying one, as long as it is compatible (as long as it is GSM). The website also states that it needs to be unlocked, but as Walmart's main area of focus is not as a cellular provider, I do not put much weight into them saying it needs to be unlocked. It might be referring to non T-Mo phones, lord only knows. I'll find out in a day or two.
As to the reason I am switching....no, it is not due to the AT&T-Mobile merger. I am currently on the T-Mobile FlexPay plan paying $94.34 a month (after taxes) for unlimited everything on my phone. My fiancee's phone is costing $75.67 a month just for unlimited talk and text. That's $170.01 a month for our 2 lines.
With WFM, I can get an unlimited talk/text plan for us that comes out to $70 total for both phones ($45/mo for the first, $25/mo for each additional line). Data is sold in bulk, with the best rate being $40 for 1 gig (or $4 per 100meg). That 1 gig of mobile data should last us quite a while, as the unused portion will roll over each month. Even if we used the entire gig every month, that is still only $110 a month ($70 for the voice/text and $40 for the data). The $110/mo is still $60.00 cheaper. That's a win-win in my book.
The best part is that my phone number (which ends in 4000, perfect for my business) has been ported to Google Voice, so I can keep it and not have to worry if the WFM plans cease to exist if the AT&T-Mobile merger is approved.
Hey sounds like you and your wife are in the same boat as me and my wife. I pay a total of $225 a month (I think? She always pays the bill so I am not 100% sure that figure is correct) for our service with T-Mobile. The WMF thing sounds interesting to me but I would lose out in the long run if I switched cause I run pretty close to the 5GB soft cap T-Mobile has every month. I use my HD2 has a WiFi hotspot all the time at home cause I am not paying the high prices the internet providers want for set up and monthly service around my area. I only have Edge at in my interior area as well so just regular web browsing is fast enough for me. If I want to download anything or watch Youtube videos or any other vedios I just go to a public WiFi spot. If the WMF sold more than one gig at a time of data I might would switch but seeing as they don't I can not right now. Lord only knows what is going to happen to me using my HD2 as a WiFi hotspot when AT&T takes over.
I'm surprised T-Mo hasn't cut your data off yet...I use my HD2 as a wifi hotspot while I am on the road (gotta love it when my phone shows the H rather than E, hehe). Anyways, one month I hit over 10 gigs and they nailed me and throttled my internet speeds for the rest of the month.
It's sad though...there are times that I get faster internet through T-Mo by tethering my laptop to my HD2 than I do on a time warner cable connection.

Ha yeah I do worry about getting throttled, but I really try to just use it for basic wed browsing nothing else while I am at home. For basic web browsing the Edge I get at home is cool, I have never had a chance to try it when I have 3G avaliable. I don't think I have ever seen the H on my HD2 lol. What can I say I live in the boonies
You DO NOT have to unlock tmobile phones to use WFM. I use an HD2 (running windows moblie and Android dual boot) and my wife has a HTC dash and neither is unlocked. If you want to use another GSM phone (ATT) then it will need to be unlocked.
This is the best deal out there if you do not use a lot of data. Been using it since last Oct and am very satisfied.

Thanks for the info there nesta17. this is good to know, I figured you wouldn't have to unlock it seeing as WMF uses the T-Mobile network. But you never know about this mobile carrier companies. LOL
Okay, quick update:
First of all, Walmart sucks! I went to the location here in town late last night to buy 2 of their activation kits (one for me and one for the wifey). I went to the electronics department and told the cashier that I needed to purchase 2 "Walmart Family Mobile Activation Kits"...he said that they can not sell those after 9:00 PM. He stated that was Walmart policy. I explained to him that I only want to buy the kit, I do not want/need him to activate the phones, as I will be doing that at home. He stuck to his story.
As I am a person that rarely believes a word any employee of Walmart (or any other store) says, I immediately went to the customer service desk to inquire. They said that the employee in electronics was correct. Still, I was doubtful. So, I grabbed my HD2 and googled for the walmart that is about 5 miles down the road. I asked for electronics and spoke with an individual named Tom. I asked him if they have the WFM Activation Kits, and he said they do. He then continued on saying that there is no 'activation associate' on staff (the last one leaves at 9PM), so if I wanted to activate in the store I would have to wait until the morning. I told him that I only wish to purchase the activation kit so I could activate it at home. He said that is not a problem, and I rushed on over. at 11:45PM I purchased the kit (well after 9:00PM, proving the first employee wrong).
I get home, activated the SIM Cards without a problem. All I needed was the IMEI of my phones, the activation number for each SIM Card (provided in the Activation Kit) as well as the SIM Card itself (also in the Activation Kit). I popped the SIM card into my HD2 and powered it up. It no longer said T-Mobile on the lockscreen, but read as "Family Mobile". There was no need to unlock the phone, and everything works as expected.
The service is just as it would be with T-Mobile, obviously. I still get the H showing on my notification bar using the same APN settings as T-Mobile. I switch from H/3G/E/G as I drive, so it is correctly changing the network(s) I hit as I drive around (I travel a lot for work).
MMS/Texts/E-Mails/etc all work as expected. I could not be any happier.
I am going to install Windows Mobile 6.5 on it later today just so I can run the Simlock program to unlock the phone, then go right back to Android. (I have the unlock code, I might as well just use it, heh)
I went from nearly $200/mo for 2 phones down to less than $80 (after taxes). I can't complain.
Hey jmhecker check your in box I sent you a PM man.

SIM unlock options?

I have an employee who is located in a remote office so I can't physically work on the phone. She has a Bell Galaxy S4 she bought outright a few months ago. We are moving her to our corporate Rogers plan.
I got her IMEI and submitted it to cellunlocker.net, paid my fee, and waited. They refunded my money a couple days later and said they couldn't find a code.
So I then had her try this procedure:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282683
It acted like it worked, but after rebooting and inserting a Rogers SIM it still asked for unlock code.
Bell says they will do it for $75 and will take 48 hours.
Any other options?

I picked up a bell s4 and I'm running on the Rogers network.
The SIM unlock method didn't work for me either. I used unlockunit.com at around midnight and about 3 minutes later received the unlock code and locked onto my lte plan without an issue.
There is even a dialer code to change the csc code to Rogers with stock apps. It will wipe your device though

You are lucky you picked that website that actually refunds you when they cannot get you a code.
I tried UnlockUnit, they were not able to get me an unlock code, but they do not seem to be willing to give me the refund they promised (a month has gone by now, since the last time I received an email saying "We will check it and get back to you soon.")

got my Note 4 unlocked

I just bought my note 4 about 3 days ago and called T Mobile to see if I could get unlock code (I paid full price) but have not heard back from them yet. Since I am leaving on a trip to Asia on Tuesday I decided to try cellunlocker.net and within a few hours or less they got me the unlock code. It cost about $30.00. Nice service.

This is their recent response to me a few days ago, paid full price for phone.
Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. We have received your SIM Unlock Request. Unfortunately, this subscriber is not eligible to receive the unlock code at this time. In order to be eligible, the IMEI must have usage by the mobile number requesting the unlock code and the account must have a minimum of two monthly service payments since first use of requested device.

i have been with TMO for almost 8 years so i have never had a problem with the last part but your IMEI must register on the network for them to unlock. However, i have gotten round this once by calling in and talking to the accounting depart i think it was. she looked up that the device was paid off in full and i told her i need the phone unlocked for business. depending on who you talk to when you call that department the IMEI being registered on the network doesnt matter. I will also state that when i made a regular request my unlock was denied but she got my unlock code sent the same/next day. I also have a history of unlocking all my phones and been with them for that long. but it never hurts to try right?

So just wait 2 months and call Tmo and they get it unlock for you?
On my last HTC One M7, they email me the unlock code within 1 day.
Some have gotten the unlock code without waiting two months, some have not. Depends on how T-mobile feels that day. I paid full price and they did not send me an unlock code. I had to use a web service to send me the unlock code.
I got the unlock code from tmobile. Took 3 times talking to them but got it eventually.

my first time was talking to csr, got rejected. yesterday i did the live chat and asked to unlock it again, told them it was for a business trip and phone has been paid. a few hours later i got the email with the unlock code. so i guess it really depends on which rep you are dealing with at that moment. btw, i have been with them for 8 1/2yrs.
I suppose my question to you guys simply, why? T-Mobile's outright purchased Note 4 can be used in say, India (can use t-mobile data/text while overseas). Are you saying that if the phone isn't 'unlocked' I cannot purchase a pre-paid SIM card from India and pop it in and it work? Is that why you guys are SIM unlocking? If I wanted to get mine SIM unlocked, will it affect anything with my use here in the states? Thanks all!

Just went through this with an iPhone.
Sadly, this is the current T-Mobile policy. Even if you pay full price for the phone you MUST have the phone in service in their network for 2 billing cycles or 40 days. Just then, and only then, they will unlock it. It doesn't matter if you've been with them for 8 years or 1 months, the 40 days of active service for the specific device being unlocked must be met. I'm sure there must be a way to skip this talking with someone over there but you have to get lucky. It's all explained here: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1588 . This applies to the Note 4 too.

then can you explain how i got my note 3 unlocked in the first week and the imei not being registered on the network.
you have to have 40 days of active service, now with new policy, but that does not mean that specific phone. the imei just has to register on the network and have no EIP for it on your account.
and yes being with t-mobile longer makes a difference, at least for me it does when i call.

to answer your question, freedom lol. but seriously if i am paying full price for a phone i should be able to do what i want with it and use it on whatever supporting carrier i want.
you could use that phone in india with a tmobile sim inside but thats roaming with free data and text.
however if you wanna put in a non tmobile sim in your phone, like a prepaid one from india like you said, your phone would need to be unlocked. you can of course buy an unlock code but i rather have tmobile do it for free since its a service they offer lol.
So with that said, there's ZERO harm in requesting a SIM unlock for my N910T for primarily use in the states and it's a nice feature to have implemented such that when I travel abroad, simply replacing my TMO SIM with an out-of-the-country pre-paid GSM SIM (so I can make calls/data/text) is simple as pull-out/push-in and VOILA?!?

Same, here. I did lose some time because the first CSR put in an unlock request for me without discussing any payment. The next morning I got a rejection from ARSystem Notify. I then called T-Mobile and asked for a supervisor. He wanted both two months of installment payments and two months of payments on the account as a whole. After I politely questioned why I should I have to pay in full for a five-member family plan, he settled for two months of EIP. After I paid, he read me the unlock code over the phone, which I also got in an email from T-Mobile.
Now all I need is a non-T-Mobile SIM. Sooner or later ...

Equipment installment plan
Anyone get their Note 4 unlocked and using it on something like Cricket? I'd like to know if the mobile hotspot app on the tmobile version will allow me to tether. Currently, I have an ATT Note 4 that I bought outright but ATT has locked down the hotspot app so even if I use it with another carrier it's trying to verify that I have a hotspot plan with ATT which obviously fails. And of course the ATT Note 4 doesn't have root yet. So I have no options. I'm coming from a Nexus 5 which was completely stock without carrier interference and this was simple. Hoping someone can help. Thanks in advance.
Asked tmobile on phone for unlock code for international use. They made me pay only one months of device payment which was 17.99. the next day received the email telling me the device has to be paid in full. Called again asked to talk to supervisor as soon as she came on the phone she said don't worry will unlock right now. I got my unlock code within 2 min.
