Hello, xda!
I've been around on the forums for some time, flashing and messing with ROMs before, but with an old HTC Touch Pro. So forgive me for seeming like a leecher.
I've come here to ask a few questions reguarding Andriod roms and flashing/upgrading procedures. I'm comfortable with using RUUs to upgrade, but who isnt...
I've had my HTC Hero for about 2 weeks now and I accidently bricked one already. I've rooted manually once, and got no signal on the stock Sprint ROM so I tried to go back to the original flash recovery but killed my phone instead.
Could someone help me out. I've read guides and been very, very anxious to upgrade and root but as you've read, I've already bricked my phone once so I'm pretty cautious now.
From what I understand, I need to root to 1.2.3, NAND backup, WIPE sd card & phone, then flash damage control's rom.....
So do I have it right or should I read a bit more?
Any help and tips from some experienced flashers would be much appreciated. Thanks!

First off; we're happy you chose not to give up and came back a second time.
What you do need to do is; 1) Root and flash a Recovery image 2) Make a Nandroid back up, 3) Wipe ONLY your phone (not your SD Card, unless you want to do Apps2SD) and 4) Flash the ROM of your choice.
**The rooting guide I linked above is the way I prefer to do it; via adb commands. However, you could also you use Flipz's kitchen to do all of this for you.
.
For more information about Flipz's kitchen, please go here: Flipz's Kitchen
Also, do note -- for other tutorials/guides/references; go HERE
I was seriously nervous to start the process as well. As I told someone else, being nervous is a good thing. That just means you'll be careful.
I seriously recommend reading this thread and following instructions. Do not skip steps, do not pass go, do not collect $200. I've personally used the Windows guide and the Linux guide. Both are very well done and I can verify that they work.
Beyond that, the Search function is fantastic and provides lots of information. Don't be afraid to ask questions, either. Most of us are nice and like to help, even if we do call people n00bs.
WOW! Insanely quick replies. Thanks for that guys. This is what I wanna hear so I'll be doing the flash when I get home.
I'm using the 2.1update1 sprint beta ROM right now so should I revert back to the 1.56 and THEN do all this or can I just jump right in. I've always been confused as to which rom needs what flash rec root file or w/e.
And yes, I do want the A2SD thing as thats one problem I'm having right now. I've only got 16MB of storage left of my current storage area but my 8GB sd card is almost empty except for a few songs and pictures. Also, should I upgrade my sd card to a higher class if my 8GB is a class 2?
Thanks again guys!
Also, I mentioned that the last time I tried to root, I had no service after I did so. Why is that and what do I do to fix this? I couldn't find anything on this in google searches.

Some people say to toggle airplane mode on and off. Some people say reboot. The last time this happened to me I just played a video game for ten or fifteen minutes and it fired up.

I've not used apps2sd myself, but I'm told the higher class card the better, for obvious reasons.
Thanks, subcypher! I've got absolutely no reason to not do this. I'll be doing it as soon as I get home.

Have fun! We'll be here when you get back.
yes.. a faster class sd card is highly recommended!!! other wise with a2sd, you might see more lag... and issues.
I personally, would not do a2sd at the same time as you upgrade. finish the upgrade first. make sure all is good...
then do the a2sd. and do a nandroid backup again before.
So I just tried to go back to 1.56 with the signed RUU that sprint gives out and it gave me an error. Failed to load bootloaded or something similar to that.
Remember, I'm on the 2.1update1 beta release of sprint's rom but I wanna root and flash to DamageControl's 2.1.
I've tried looking into how to root my current 2.1update1 beta ROM but I didn't come across anything worthwhile.
Anyone know whats going on???

What steps did you take to use the Sprint RUU?
In order to run the Sprint RUU, you need to do:
**Make sure you have the appropriate drivers to detect HTC Sync**
1. Install HTC Sync on your computer
2. After install, open and leave the HTC Sync Window open
3. Connect your phone; and click on the sync option. You should be able to sync, if not - then you're having driver issues.
4. After you've successfully synced, NOW run the Sprint 1.5 RUU.
5. Upon a successful RUU, you'll have your phone back to its factory settings.
Now you can reroot, flash whatever ROM you like, and flash any/all add-ons.
As far as the signal goes, the following are from the Fresh 2.0d install page.
A reboot after the first bootup finishes is recommended, especially if you were previously having PRI/PRL problems.

If after flashing you end up with any data issues then first try rebooting. If that doesn’t resolve it for you then try updating your profile and PRL. This is a side effect of the different PRI’s and PRL’s that people have ended up on. You may actually need to update your profile and PRL a couple times to get everything going but I promise it will. You should end up on PRL 60663.

I personally had no problems, but I was flashing Fresh, not Damage.
Ok, I've got it rooted, and nand-backup stored on my PC.
DamageControl says to wipe before his install. Do I "wipe data/factory reset" or "wipe Dalvik-cache" or any other options?
If its the same as Fresh, they want you to do a Wipe data/factory reset
Thanks everyone! I'm installing DamageControl right now! I'll let you know how it goes.
Success! I've got the phone rooted, at least I think I do, and flashed to DamageControl v2.08.
My next task is I really want to get my apps to install to my sdcard. I've got a 8GB class 4 sdcard. Should and can I put my apps onto this? I've heard that the hero doesnt even read and write faster then 2Mbps so I'm good, right?
Not sure if I'm rooted. I've installed a few apps that require SU and when they try to do a "SU Request" the screen sits at a black screen with that title at the top.
Any idea on whats going on?
If you were able to flash a damage less rom you're rooted.
On the black window there should be am option on the bottom to allow, select it.
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
The black screen for SU is caused by not having USB Debugging turned on as it is required for superuser permissions. I have not tried A2SD because I only have a class 2, but have read that unless you have a class 6 it can be slow.
Hello, everybody.
First I'd like to thank xda for existing and providing for such a great place for customization of phones, getting information and giving great tools.
Now, I'm a complete and utter newbie when it comes to this, this is my first android device ever and I haven't bothered doing any customization with phones ever since I retired my old Motorolla a925 in 2007 or so.
So I'm trying to be really cautious when installing a new ROM and have some questions:
First one is concerning TWRP. I cannot install it. I downloaded Goomanager like I was told, pushed the 'install OpenRecoveryScript' but it says that "No recoveries were found for your device". I suspect this is because the phone I bought was already rooted. My friends visited Dubai previous week and brought it for me from there.
If this helps, my build is N9005XXUMBMI7. Also, I cannot update my device because "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available."
Do I have to install updates and TWRP manually or change my build?
Second, what kind of ROM would you guys suggest? What are the most popular ones?
There are so many of them and since I'm so new about all of this I have barely any idea how they differ from one another. Someone told me that Cyogenmod is really great for Android devices and suggested Slim Bean but after searching a bit on the net it seems that they are not available for Note 3. Does anyone know if they are developing them for Note 3 yet and when they will be available?
My personal criteria for custom ROMs go like this: improving the performance and batter as much as possible. Removing as much as possible of bloatware, freeing up as much as possible space.
Third,
reading the installation guides I'm not certain if when I'm installing a custom ROM should I keep the ROM files on the computer, connect the phone and then install. Or should I put the files in the internal memory? Or do I put them on the SD card, put the SD card into the phone and install from there?
Thanks for reading this, I apologize if I made an impasse. I tried to search a little bit but couldn't find answers.

First your device must be rooted. to check if it is rooted get Root checker from playstore and run it. Go to main page of TWRP, search for your device ie Samsung galaxy Note 3, choose your device code ie International hlte or whatever your device code may be. Click it then go down the list of servers to download the file to your computer. once the file has been downloaded, use Odin to flash it under PDA then reboot.
After you have Custom Recovery installed, you can Flash any ROM written for your device model ie N9005 or N900 etc...To flash ROMs you need to have the ROM zip file in either your internal storage or your external SD Card. I most of the time download them straight into my my SD Card to save myself from transferring the file from my computer to my phone.
Good luck.

Thanks.
My device is definately rooted. I didn't root it myself though. I checked with the rootchecker and even have few apps istalled which need root, like
Adaway.
The TWRP installation through Goomanager seemed to be the most retard-proof so I'm concerned that if I get error messages doing it that way there might be something wrong with my phone so I didn't try other methods (even though I was aware of them)
To clarify, 'External SD card' is the normal card which you can put in and out of the phone (like SIM)? Because when I heard 'external' I tend to think about something that is outside the phone connected by usb.
Ok guys, can someone explain me how to use Odin? Assume that I'm a complete retard.
What version do I use for Note 3 n9005? I searched around but couldn't find any versions that explicitly said that they are compatible with my phone. I am talking about the desktop version of course not the mobile one.
How do I use it? Could I get step by step instructions, please? I downloaded the TWRP file from their site, now what?
There are guides and videos on the net and I watched/read some of them but none for my device. I am (understandably) nervous about my very first attempt at installing a custom ROM. Don't want to turn my expensive phone into a brick. Still, I'm willing to take chances to remove all the bloatware and improve the battery life.
Also could I get answers for my previous questions about ROMs?
Use mobile odin pro. Purchase if needed. Its all you need for flashing. Didnt look at pc eversince. Anyway back to topic. Download .tar file for twrp for ur phone model. Open mobile odin. Download whatever needed by mobile odin. Load the twrp recovery.tar file and flash away.

I was hoping on doing this without using any money. Is doing it with the mobile version the safest method? If it is really much safer than other variants, I'll spend some money just for that.

I'm currently running 4.4.2 and biggins ROM. been running flawlessly since I put it on it when it came out. Now, for about the last month or 2 my WiFi Keeps Shutting off on its own, forgets WiFi passwords, won't connect hardly when it does come in. It's also been randomly rebooting on its own, sometimes 3 or 4 times in a row. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it. I've had the phone since the note 3 came out.

Frankly that sounds more like hardware troubles than software.
(Q) Are you overclocking or undervolting? Using kernel tuning apps? If so, temporarily stop doing that to see if the problem goes away, and if not then there's two approaches for resolving this:
(A) Throw the phone away and get a new one.
(B) Wipe and and install a conservative ROM e.g. Jasmine, retaining the stock kernel. If the same problems continue, then you have verified it is a hardware problem; see (A)

I'm not overclocked or anything. It's been on Biggins ROM since he came out with it last year. And I haven't done anything since. It's got me baffled as to why it just randomly started doing it.

Actually I guess I wasn't familiar with the Biggins ROM but then I remembered that you said "last year", so (just now I figured that) you were either on a DevEd phone, or it was a "stock kernel" ROM.
So I looked at the Biggins thread. I guess it is actually just a very heavily themed stock-kernel ROM, and you are using Safestrap? And don't have an unlocked bootloader? And don't have a "real" version of TWRP in the recovery partition?
If that's what you did, then you don't have a trivial way of stock reversion short of going back to Odin and starting over with rooting.
Unless you were diligent and backed up the stock slot with Safestrap-twrp right after you flashed Biggins.. Or even better, you also did the same thing right after you installed Safestrap, even before you installed Biggens[/b] Then you could try and dirty-flash the Biggens backup and see if that changes anything. And if that didn't work, restore the original (Safestrapped, pre-Biggens) ROM along with a factory reset and see if that does anything.
But that would only rectify problems that were due to flash memory bit-rot problems (progressive wear & eMMC flash memory pages slowly going bad). And even if that were the case, it's a sign of more of it yet to come.
If you didn't make those backups, then I suppose you have a trip to Odin and re-rooting, re-installation of Biggins - on a phone that might have failing hardware. Either that or you could take the plunge and unlock your bootloader. Then you would have more options.
Are you on NC4?
Hardware does go bad. It happens at a low probability, so usually it doesn't affect most people before the time they would retire their hardware. Although I have to say - based on my experience with other devices - use of MLC flash memory probably does imply a pretty short product lifetime. (It's sort of ridiculous, buying a device that costs $700 and expecting it to be dead in 3 years. OTOH, in those three years most VZW subscribers have spent another $2500+ on service fees for their first line, so it's not the longest pole in the tent.)

Well,
What do you plan on doing? It's not like there's a toggle button in Settings labeled "Act strange and reboot randomly mode" that we can just go in and turn off.
Do you have any Safestrap backups?
How about the NC4 factory Odin firmware file, do you have that? A copy of Odin somewhere & a PC it will run on?
That's how these things go - you need to create a fault hypothesis, and then try something that will hopefully do something to remedy that type of fault... which might or might not work.
The "bit rot" hypothesis assumes that flashing the same software you already have on the phone will correct eMMC memory pages that have gone bad, both by refreshing the data and also through page replacements by the Flash memory controller doing wear leveling. But that's only one hypothesis out of many that are possible. There's no guarantees that this will fix the problems you are having if the origin of the problem has nothing to do with this mechanism.
If it were me I'd probably make TiBu backups of my most frequently used apps, back up the internal SDcard, and start from scratch by Odin flashing NC4 stock*. Its more effort, but pretty much everything gets re-written that way, and if you continue to have issues then you know it is time to move on to a new phone, rather than continuing to diddle with it.
good luck
* I believe that the TowelRoot app works on NC4, does it not?

If you do a "tar tvf filename" on those .win00x files the dates of the files listed will give you a better idea. (I suppose that some widows archive programs also understand .tar file formats, but I can't give you a reccomendation)
Also I sort of recall that the Safestrap version of (twrp) recovery adds the name of the slot from which the backup was made.
You actually have lots of choices. You could unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery, and try a different ROM. Or when faced with Odin flashing, bite the bullet and upgrade to OF1. (As near as I can tell, using towelroot on NC4 is far less of a hassle then that Yemen tool appears to be with OB6/OF1 ... that sort of argues for flashing NC4 instead of more recent firmware.)
Well anyway. If it's failing hardware none of this will make a whit of difference and your phone will still lockup/reboot/drop WiFi.
good luck
Hi!
I bougth a Tab A T550. I already rooted it but can't find how to put apps on SD. I don't know if it's because of root or it was "as it" when bought because I didn't try it before. My last tablet was able to let me change apps to SD from the same apps config but this one hasn't the option. Is this an error or a change on MarsMallow?
I also tried to use App Master, but it closes just on opening, don't know why. Not compatible with MM?
Thanks!

Ok! I found it on Google (as usual ). But other devices had internal and external SD. I understand the internal was a partition but, where? Inside the device mem? Or on the SD? First option seems stupid so must be second. And why change a way that lets you choose where to put apps and data? I was comfortable by choosing by myself where to store each thing...
The internal SD is nothing but a partition of the flash rom the T550 uses. If you want the external SD to be used as a flash card you can use as a sepearte, removable storage, you have to modify a file in your system folder. This of course means your device needs to be rooted. If you know how to root your Tab A6, I will post a way to give your wanted applications read and write access to the external. I have to warn you though, that the development on the T550 has not advanced very much yet because of the brand (Samsung) trying to make their devices exclusive and the new processor architecture. I have found only one way to root the device in a stable way but that makes it impossible to backup and recover my current configuration. TWRP wasn't able to break the encryption of the DATA partition which holds the specific user settings and personal data.

I already rooted my tablet (In fact, I said on my first post). Even when Adaway app says it's not rooted! :silly: But one another adblocker app works correctly so I don't know what to believe. At least, with root explorer I can see folders locked before rooting...
Well. i had it working with the DM13 on my Tab 2. But I tested it on the Tab A and it doesn't seem to work that way anymore...
Still tweaking I am.
What is DM13?
Sorry, I meant CM13 (CyanogenMod)

For this problem's solution, use Root Essentials from the Google Play Store and give it root access. Then look through the app until you see adoptable storage. After you go to that button, press adopt to internal if you want more storage for the phone (computers cannot access the sd card anymore!). If you want to change back to making the SD Card being read for computers, go to that adoptable storage page and press migrate. Your GBs or MBs should be back to normal on the SD Card.
Hope I helped.

I take note of your advice, but I'm not sure of liking this "adopting" mode.
I also am not sure if this tab is doing well. The screen needs to be more or less al 25% of bright to be able to look at it without "eyeache". Too bright in white! And more in the center of the screen than in corners which show a little gray (just a little, but it makes me feel as I was looking at a curve screen).
I'm very disappointed because my old tab is just it: old. And battery drains easy. But I prefer it to anyone sold today! :crying: I love it and I'm right doing it, because it's a Galaxy Tab S, the best tab ever made, at least, to me. So, what can I do?
Sorry for explaining my personal drama, but I'm getting really mad with all this...

If your device is rooted, and you want it to have the latest updates, download Samsung Smart Switch on your Windows PC. Reply back if you want to hear the full advice to change back to stock rom when you sell it to anyone.
(Nobody wants to buy a rooted tablet from the previous owner)

Don't know which latest updates you're referring to. And either don't understand which tablet you're talking about to sell.
I'm not yet sure if I'll return the tab A to seller (here we have 14d days of return policy) or not. Because buying an S2 is more expensive and I'm not sure this difference to be useful to me (taking apart the screen). Anyway, to be able to return the tab A, I already flashed the stock ROM. I didn't change the ROM when I rooted it, but rooting seems to break the possibility to make a factory reset, either from bootloader or from Android. So, I thank your try to help me but, as you can see, I already did it.
There are lots of things I don't know, but I've rooted all my Android devices, from first till now. And I even had an iPad 2 and jailbraked it. I'm a little bit freaky! LOL

Ok. Thanks for the clarification on that but, flashing a stock rom won't do anything. The device will still say Custom, not Official in the Status of the device. So, what I mean by the Samsung Smart Switch, is to download it on a Windows PC and open it up then go to Device Reinitialization in the More tab and then press the second tab in that, then put your device model number then the serial number. Give it Administrator access and then the latest updates should install and also the custom binary and custom device should turn back to official. (FLASHING STOCK FILES ON ODIN WON'T SOLVE ANYTHING! IT STILL VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY!! SO YOU GOT TO TURN IT BACK TO NORMAL BY USING SAMSUNG SMART SWITCH.)

Totally incorrect on several points.
Stock ODIN flashable firmware is official and does NOT void your warranty.
It WILL return your device back to official status and remove custom status.
The files downloaded via Smartswitch are identical.

True that, but I mean, if you want the latest updates and the newest kernel, etc. Then you might want to download the SmartSwitch waty. Let's say, you have a Lollipop rom and then you want a Marshmallow one for that device. Then it would be better to get it the Samsung SmartSwitch way because the Odin flashable version is not out yet.

They pretty much come out at the same time.
Sites like Sammobile download direct from Samsungs update server, same as Smartswitch connects to.
Release dates are usually posted with the firmware.

Ok, I can understand that but it takes forever for the person who wants to download that .tar file in order to get that Odin file. Plus, SmartSwitch can install the updates and files within 30 minutes without 8 hours of waiting. (I don't use money for websites such as FileGator, etc.)

The problem with Sammobile is that just this days is having problems with free downloads... But it's easy to find the same stock ROM anywhere in the net if you take the CSC code to Google. Isn't it so? I found it in this way...

That's what I thounght and what I understood. I don't write usually here but I read a lot! :highfive:
Most likely this will have been asked many times, and I have done my own research already, but somehow I still feel uneasy about the whole process.
I've read this thread through and through and have even downloaded the appropriate zip file, but the ever-present risk of bricking my phone is holding me back.
What contingencies can I put in place in case this all goes horribly wrong and I brick my phone and what can I do to give me the best chances of success?
Thanks in advance

Just out of curiosity, which model note 4 do you have?
To answer your question though, there's very little chance of actually hard bricking your phone. Usually the worst case scenario is that you'll have to factory reset and lose your data and your internal sdcard data.
Just be certain that you have the correct firmware for your device that way things go sideways on you you'll be able to get back to a stock rom.

I was always scared about flashing mine too, I'll offer a couple things I did to make me feel a little easier.
1. (Correct software) Make sure you have the right software packages for your phone N910P/G/N/V...whatever, usually the first page has links to everything you'll need.
2. (Clean/Organize a little) Before you go to backup your current phone setup thin it out, delete any apps you wouldn't want on a new phone is the way I look at it. Move any pictures, Files, Music, anything you wouldn't want to lose off your internal storage (just in case)
3. (Create nandroid/backup, and store in a cool dry safe place) Assuming you're using TWRP recovery there is an option to back up your system, Data and Boot partitions (files). I believe those 3 are selected by default. I'd also recommend selecting EFS (that is the part that has all your phone's radio information in it so should you lose your network you can install that and get it back.
4. (Flash away) Make you do a clean flash the first which involves wiping everything most ROM's have good instructions on their first post.
5. ( Any problems boot into TWRP and flash your back ups) If you have the above backed up on an external SD card send a copy to Dropbox, Google Drive, i Cloud, your own computer, anywhere and everywhere you know it won't get lost, This file is a snapshot of your phone right now, treat it like gold. So if you nerf it up, install the recovery file you made and it'll be exactly like it was before.
I hope this helps ease your concerns a little, I've only been playing for a little while myself so I thought hearing from someone in a similar position would help.
Also if you run into problems always post your issue here, there are a lot of people with a wealth of knowledge willing to help here.
Good luck, most of all have fun!!
