I will be trading my iphone 5 on Monday for a Verizon G2 On the 12B build. I have been out of the android thing for a year now. I know how to root the phone but the Loki and recovery stuff is very new to me.
Main questions are how do I install a recovery that bypasses the boot loader and allows full flashing. TWRP is preferable but if CWM is better on this phone that's fine. What is Loki exactly and once I install a a Loki recovery can I install any kernels/ ROMs that I want? Please provide me with a step by step and links to stuff you think I need to know. I really appreciate your help.

You can flash custom roms and recovery without thinking about the bootloader. It's supposedly locked, but nothing to worry about.
Just root, flash custom recovery and flash custom rom. Any recovery will do, and TWRP is my favourite as well
If you decide you want to root and put a custom recovery on it there are two things to consider.
1. NEVER accept an OTA update. Not even if it promises you two tickets to the land of the unicorns. Don't!
2. Back up everything. And your EFS partition. And save it. Not on your device. Heck, make 5 copies and put one copy on an USB-dongle, another on your computer, the third under your bed, the fourth in your wallet and make a bank account in Switzerland for the fifth. The EFS partition contains crucial informations about your device. If you by accident delete it when flashing a custom rom, you turned your phone into a 5.2 inch tablet. And there's no way of getting it back. You might never need it, but if you do, you will thank yourself for having made that backup!
Thanks for the info. What way do you recommend to flash recovery? GooManager or other app. Or some other method? and also do you use your recovery to backup the efs partition or something else?

I personally haven't rooted this G2 yet, but TWRP offers the ability to back up your EFS.
Have a look here for backing up EFS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2451390
You can use flashify to install TWRP, should be pretty easy and straightforward
Great. Is there a thread here on using flashify? I'm unfamiliar with that.

I guess if you flash a custom rom then that will cure the OTA issue
Hi All,
I just rooted my verizon G2 using ioroot19 and the instructions from the dev thread. When I then used clockwork rom manager to flash the vs980 verson of clockworkmod recovery. The flash said it worked but when I tried to get in I got the android with the red! I then followed the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449670 both methods 1 and 2, but now all I get when I try to get into recovery is a black screen. The phone still boots fine, but nothing seems to work for the recovery.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Don't use rom manager. It doesn't work on our phones. Use flashify or freegee to install a recovery

When I flash TWRP with Freegee. Will my phone still be able to boot into my stock ROM or will I only boot into recovery and need to flash a ROM?
Do you prefer Freegee or Flashify?

Use freegee. it will do the trick on a rooted phone. It is made by Shelnutt2. You can use the free or paid version but the paid version is cheap and you will support future development.
It is one of the best ways of installing TWRP/CWM on the LG G2.
Paid version (use this one)
Free version
Freegee worked great. Thanks!

I've been reading about the boot loader hack that's out. I'm unrooted and really want to root this thing. Just kind of confused about the Loki process. I was going to root then use goomanager to get twrp since I heard its loki'd. Does that mean after I do that I just pick a ROM and flash it? If so is it only certain types of ROMs? Kinda confused

Best thing you can do is more reading. Read about the Loki exploit, read the TWRP thread, read the CWM thread.
After you read, you should have a better idea of what you want to do.
In my opinion, the simplest thing to do is download GooManager and use it to install TWRP. TWRP is a fine custom recovery. However, I would then go to the (OUDHS) CWM thread and flash the CWM zip (using TWRP) to get CWM for your custom recovery. CWM is also a very fine custom recovery, plus, shabbypenguin has cooked in the ability for it to Loki ROMs for you. Again read about it yourself and if you have any questions use the forums "search" function to answer them or look in the threads I listed. Good luck.

If you go the OUDHS (CWM) route you can flash any that would otherwise be safe to flash if the bootloader were unlocked. Like I said, the CWM thread has a lot of information about which ROMs are flashable already in that thread.

Ok... I have been reading way to much today, to the point i did something rather noobish.
Was in the dev section TWRP thread specifically looking to downgrade fron 2.6 to 2.5, saw the last post where someone posted a dropbox link of 2.5. Thought "how convenient" and flashed. But the zip was for another model number, now i cant get into my recovery.
Odin flash of the stock image is always an option. But one that I would prefer to avoid it if at all possible. I was hoping that someone else out there was well... as stupid as I am, and maybe had some advice?
Is there any possibility that goo manager will simply over right the wrong recovery image with the proper?
Or is it by any chance possible to simply flash the TWRP ZIP with Odin?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, and I already know that I'm a burnout lol.

Yeah, just finished a backup/restore after goo re installed 2.6.
Everything seems fine. Just with so many "brick" threads on here wanted to be careful.
The bricks revolve mostly around the newest update that locks the boot loader on the at&t s4. On the m non at&ti believe you just need a non Loki kernel but I am not positive.

My phone is bootloader unlocked from the start from what i understand its the Canadian Rogers varient.

My understanding is that we stay away from anything loki'd.

Ponder that, a canuck is less subject to tyranny? Your bootloader isn't locked? NICE! AT&T has degenerated from American Telephone and Telegraph into a globalized melting pot of greed and required upgrade costs and technical support that uses broken English spoken by people in India. You Canadians luck out this time!
I jumped in with motochopper to get root back in May and had the AT&T Software update service frozen with Titanium Backup back in June, I was so lucky to be "on top of it" by reading this forum. I used "Casual" to obtain TWRP 2.5.0.2 a custom recovery. I've never seen it so easy. After burning an image 3.56 GB of my stock firmware, I have since deleted it from my handset and replaced it with a nandroid of my daily driver here because GoldenEye is flawless. I saved a copy of the stock firmware on my desktop computer just in case, but I doubt I'll ever flash it and all of it's horrendous bloatware.
So I'm a happy camper, that only suffers the jone'sen for a fix as a "flash junkie". I will try CyanogenMod on this S4 after they iron the kinks out.
Looks like you're ok now?
FYI for anyone else in similar situation, ROM Toolbox Pro can download and install recoveries as well. It can access TWRP as well as CWM recoveries. A bonus for TWRP, it detects 2.5.0.2 as latest (avoid the occasional Teamwin splash screen hang with 2.6)!
I used this method to downgrade from 2.6 to 2.5.0.2. :good:
Word of warning, why upgrade from a working twrp 2.5.0.2, when it works flawless? Sometimes upgrading to a newer, is not always the best...look at the XDA app....yikes...

Wrong twrp flashed
Dear friend wrong twrp for my device I'm not able to go to the boot menu, how can i get rid of this, help me please. I've my stack memory and kernel already backup in my device memory.
The phone is an att i337? If it is, I assume the bootloader is unlocked since you were able like to flash a custom recovery.
i have no twrp AND I am stuck in boot loop...............................what will I do
Boot into download mode and confirm the phone's model number. Then flash a stock ROM from sammobile.com with Odin to get the phone back to stock.
So I've gotten the official 4.3 att update via ota.. Just today..
After carefully reading and understanding some thing I went and rooted via this method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5mCsDyW-TI&feature=youtube_gdata_player
^which works fine BTW.. SuperSU works approved by Root checker..
However I can't get safestrap to work on this device since the update where 4.2.2 worked
It state recovery installed but when I Boot to Recovery just brings me back to home screen.. Is there another method to have safe strap installed? Or is there another custom recovery I can install and make it work?

At this point, you don't have a working recovery and safe strap doesn't work. We don't have a flashable odin file for the new update yet I believe. If a Samsung experience at best buy does, I'd imagine you'd could go into into a best buy and see if they'd re flash it. I could wrong or there could be another way.

In the Safestrap thread that you got the safestrap recovery from tells everything about it. Here is a thread in Q & A as well...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428254
I'm hoping you at least read the entire safestrap thread before trying to install it?
Here is the information on 4.3 for AT&T...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498897
If it doesn't mention anything in there about recovery, then it doesn't (yet) exist. Just keep an eye on the thread. If a working recovery is created it will be posted there. There is no need to ask about it in that thread, it will happen when / if it happens and someone will post about it.
I have a rooted MK2 device. I tried installing CWM through ROM Manager but my phone will not boot the CWM and when I try it comes up with an error.
It seems to be installing a Loki'd version of CWM recovery will solve the problem, but I don't how to flash loki recoveries and I've looked all over the forums for one specific to loki'd recoveries. Can someone help me out please? I'm relatively new at this so I'm totally unsure about how to proceed. Many thanks!

1. I would like to install a 4.4 Google Edition rom. Is there any way for me to accomplish this? Also, is it a bad idea to go ahead and flash it without a recovery?
2. Should I revert the recovery back to original? How would I go about doing that?

There isn't anything you can do so far. The only thing you could do is use an app I can't remember the name of to flash mods to your current system, but you can not flash ROMs and definitely not anything that may need a different kernel. If you want to get a working recovery then find the MJ6-MJ9 thread but only use the recovery tar file, not the rest of it.

Glad you got it--you can now flash custom recoveries from recovery. I like twrp 2.5.0.2
Don't try goomanager anymore--not needed
There are a couple files to delete so you don't get auto updated. Some have Update in name and one has FOTA. I don't have them in front of me atm
Get a nandroid asap and put copy on pc too
Plus backup efs
Just one last check before I try and mess with things tonight. Since I'm on MDL still, to install a new current ROM (like this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280556), all I need to do is:
- install a custom recovery (TWRP 2.5.0.2 looks like the most recent)
- backup
- full wipe
- flash new ROM
I shouldn't have to mess with any of the safestrap stuff correct?
Just trying to be cautious.
