Posted this thread a year ago with the Nexus 7 2012, now it's time to revive it with the Nexus 5!
Additional horsepower (especially with Franco Kernel bumping the processor speed up to 3 GHz) means more settings can be left on as default.
Anyone have any ideas on optimal settings? There are some games that get specific settings, but there are some settings (Enhanced 3D Rendering) that we can turn on now regardless of the game because we have the horsepower to do so, unlike on other devices that run this app.
I'm noticing some strange artifacts in the battle menus of Breath of Fire 3 with OpenGL (at least I think I have OpenGL on), advanced rendering, 32 bit rendering, and qualcomm processor fix. Still trying to figure out what works best on here.
I too have been wondering about the best settings for FPse on the N5. Been scouring the interwebs and can't find much on the topic. Just downloaded the app today. Loaded up FFVII, flipped some settings, and I seem to have messed something up because now it won't play when it did before. If anyone has any advice on the best settings for playing this game, it would be greatly appreciated.

3ghz would be crazy with a phone.. But very tempting!

Hi guys! What settings are you using in opengl video mode? I'm trying to get rid of some glitches/slowdowns in Crash Team Racing, but so far I had no luck by randomly messing with opengl video settings

Xda-developers forum member Chainfire has released an impressive new graphics utility for Android called Chainfire3D. He describes it as an “intermediary OpenGL driver” which can change commands sent from an app to your graphics driver. That allows you to do things like play games that require a specific graphics driver on unsupported hardware. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Here are a few things Chainfire3D can do:
NightMode reduces the number of colors on your display to save battery life on an OLED screen or make a screen easier to view in low-light settings.
Reduce texture resolutions by half, which can reduce memory use and improve performance when rendering 3D graphics.
Convert 32-bit textures to lower quality 16-bit textures.
Use plugins to emulate NVIDIA Tegra 2, PowerVR, or ATI graphics and report to the Android Market that your phone has that hardware (so you can download apps that normally require Tegra 2, for instance).
In order to use Chainfire3D you’ll need a rooted phone with a 1 GHz or faster processor. The software has been tested on a number of phones including the Samsung Galaxy S, Motorola Atrix 4G, Motorola Droid 2, and Google Nexus S.
Some games may not play properly even with Chainfire3D installed, and there’s a chance that you won’t get the same kind of graphics performance that you would with a real NVIDIA Tegra2 processor, but many users are reporting that they’re not seeing any real problems with Tegra-specifica games running on non-Tegra devices.

Description
!! Android 2.1 and newer, NOT for Honeycomb !!
Chainfire3D is an intermediary OpenGL driver. What does that mean? It means that Chainfire3D sits between your apps and the graphics drivers, and can intercept and/or change commands between the two. It has some built-in functions, and can be further extended with plugins to provide extra functionality.
!! Chainfire3D is for 1ghz+ devices only !!
!! ROOT is required for this program, as well as a writable /system partition. S-OFF is also required on HTC devices !!
Features include reducing texture size and quality to reduce memory use and potentially increase game performance, as well as increasing memory use potentially increase performance.
Be sure to check the thread on XDA for available plugins !
Chainfire3D has been tested on:
- HTC HD2
- Samsung Galaxy S
- Samsung Galaxy Tab 7"
- Samsung Galaxy S II
- Samsung Epic 4G
- Motorola Atrix 4G
- Motorola Droid 2
- LG Optimus 2X
- Google Nexus S
It's likely to work on far more devices. So far nobody has reported a failed install, so that's good. Doesn't mean problems can't happen.
!! There is some risk involved installing the driver. If you have CWM, it would be prudent to create a backup before installing !!

Anyone try it on their G2 yet? Seems like it could help boost performance a bit.
Just installed it but I don't really see any difference in performance... ran Nenamark and still got the same fps.

Did you set it up to drop the image quality for that specific app (or drop the quality in the global settings)? Not doubting your knowledge but we all do things like that at times
Anyway, as far as running and not causing any fc's that I've seen over the past 24 hours the drivers are stable. As far as working, I guess we'll just have to do some more testing.
I DLed this last night and have not had any FCs. I have the CF3d driver installed but no options checked. I will need to play some games and play with settings to se what this does for or phones. Anybody gory any suggestions for games to try?

Uhm... to try the tegra games i have to buy the pro version to fix the market so i can download the games?
I don't know about pro-vs-free for tegra games but you need plugins to make it work regardless. They're attached at the bottom of the post in the link. Credit goes to the op.

Did you hit the fix market button after installing the plugin? I can't remember if you can or not in the free version. That did it for me.

Hi guys,
like many of you. i just received nexus 10 yesterday after some basic browsing, everything went fine.
now i want to try google earth to see how screen will perform. it was so laggy to the unusable.
then i tried some tablet made game (http://machinarium.net/), is also very slow.
please see youtube video 1 & video 2.
so is my unit defected? or this normal can anyone confirm please.
thank you in advance
Games running very badly
Overall Responsiveness?
On the first link, some people there are also experiencing some FPS issues, but a possible fix for that seems to be to Force GPU Acceleration. The second link has a reviewer mentioning dropped frames a lot, which might mean it could be a common experience. Forcing GPU Acceleration though might help.
i cannot find where the developer setting on my nex10 can you please tell me where?

Runs slow for me too. Its not just you. I have a feeling...and I hope I'm wrong. The resolution this thing outputs cannot be handled by the GPU in graphic intensive games...

Instead of knee jerking why don't you send an email to the developers to report the issue and find out when they're going to optimize their apps for Nexus 10.
If demanding games like NFS MW, Dead Trigger, MC 3, etc. run smoothly I don't how they can't optimize that child's game.
Hi,
I'm thinking of getting rid of my S3 LTE for a Nexus 4, as one thing that really irritates me about my s3 is that scrolling is not smooth with apps such as facebook, or any apps with listviews and images.
I've read that the nexus 4 is "buttery smooth", so I just wanted to ask, does the nexus 4 have this problem or not? I am amazed that my 1.4ghz processor can run hd games but cant scroll a listview smoothly, which leads me to think theres something wrong with the s3.
Any feedback on the nexus 4's smoothness is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Jack
Same thing with nexus 4 scrolling within apps is jittery not smooth. But I think its an app issue because on some apps like currents it scrolls smoothly but on apps like xda it is not.

hmm thats sad to hear it happens on the nexus 4 too.
I thought it was just bad coding, but even in the play store, when I scroll down the homepage and images are loaded there is lag here as well.
For me it's really noticeable and not smooth, I can't believe iOS can perfect this with half the hardware resources but android cant.

So when you scroll the Facebook app at a fairly slow speed, do you notice no ever so slight glitches? Like its dropping frames? I notice this a lot on my s3.
OK first thing you have to understand. Not all androids are the same. How the OS interacts with the hardware is very different from one device to another. With android being still in its baby stages you will find lag from time to time no matter what device you use. Apple can control all aspects of the hardware and software so they will always have an advantage. You have to remember even the OS is not designed to take advantage of anything more then a dual core. Android has a long way to go still.
Wayne Tech Nexus
Ive been playing around, and if Ive found that the nexus 4 sets the min cpu frequency to 1026mhz when the screen is touched, and it appears my s3 only sets it to 800mhz. If i set my min frequency to 1.4ghz my scrolling is super smooth. I guess it's an s3 problem.
S3 is optimized to run the day to day routine tasks under 800 mhz. I installed android tuner and it kept reporting so about s3. Wasn't the case with my n4. N4 showed 1xx ghz or1.5 ghz... Somewhere between.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I've changed my CPU governor from pegasusq to interactive which appears to be using more power when doing things, which is giving me much better performance including scrolling. I was on the verge of selling my s3 and getting an n4 before I found this! Its fairly smooth now though.
Hi everyone, this is my first thread on XDA. Now that we have the pleasantries out of the way ... straight to the point. I just bought a Nexus 7 2nd edition/2013. Being the power user that I am (still haven't rooted it xD ) started trying out some emulators as a test, namely ppsspp and dolphin for android. Both of those are in development and highly unstable.
It's worth to mention that my first day of use was flawless. Here it comes ... BUT ... after messing around with dolphin I managed to well simply crash the OS. The tablet completely shut down, probably to prevent damage (e.g. bluescreen style). When I switched it back on everything seemed fine, until I played a video and I noticed that blacks/browns were pixelated (like artifacts). I installed the video game Magic 2014 and I'm unsure if I noticed it before or if it happened just now but during the intro I get the same issue with blacks - highly pixelated, and one of the images has 3 or 4 lines. In game performance is smooth and absolutely no issues.
The ppsspp and dolphin emulators both have options which push the CPU/GPU and memorry quite a lot. The tablet however hasn't been heating up at all.
What do you think ? Have I damaged my 3 day old nexus baby's GPU ? Or is it a software - driver issue ? Maybe something else
Help me oh great xda crowd

That was the first thing I did sadly same artifacts in Magic 2014. I'm considering sending it back for a replacement.
Hi yall!
Just got my gs4/9505 it has version 4.3
On it but it lags as hell at games
Like dead trigger 2 and others...
I had before that an iPhone 5 and lg g pro
And never had any lag at games and any task as this device. .
Anyone has the same problem as I do with the 9505?
Or even with the 9500 octa?

I don't play that games, but reasons for lags could be many. Some video games are not optimized for all drivers / GPUs.
Samsung's phones are so filled with bloat I wonder they work at all. This with knox is a totally new dimension. I always root, and at least remove everything I don't need and/or go AOSP/CM as soon as I can.
Back to your problem. Activate developer options, by tapping Build Number (Settings - about phone.). There you'll find options 'force GPU rendering' and 'disable HW overlays'. Play with these and see if it helps.

Done factory reset and the phone now back to normal.
Games are a bit lagging but not that
Serious.
Its a shame that the adreno 320 cant handle / not optimized
For games...with my older nexus4 I had no problems
Maybe because the high resulotion instead of 720p...
I play that game on High settings and never experienced a lag. Make sure you have turned Off Power Save Mode and give Antutu a try to know what's going on with your phone.
Im not on psm and for instance Dead trigger 2 is lagging on high settings.
My os is 4.3 XXUMK9 and antutu gives me 29663pts
