Hello,
I currently have installed CM 10.1-20130709-NIGHTLY-mb526 (Android 4.2.2, 2.6.32.9-AeroKernel), but I had a problem yesterday (phone would not boot).
So I did a Cache/Dalvik wipe, and after reboot it optimized all the apps but looped at "opening apps".
So today I decided to reinstall the above mentioned rom. But after installation it turned out to be defect somehow (e.g. the unlock screen will never appear, altough it is activated; in the swipe down menu the right-above button won't appear/won't work; browser won't turn on; home button does not work etc.).
So I decided to give KitKat a try. I visited this page by Quarx and I would begin with the Recovery Update. I put the update recovery zip on the sd card and install it via TeamWinRecovery.
After reboot, the TeamWinRecovery won't turn on and it simpy reboots. So now I am stuck. How do I install/recover TeamWinRecovery (or any necessary Recovery to install KitKat?).
After the installation I can simply install the latest KitKat rom, right? Or is there anything else necessary (kernel update etc.?). If I don't like KitKat, can I simply flash the latest CM10.2 rom?
Thank you very much!
Edit: The first rom i woul like to try is cm-11-20140117-NIGTHLY-mb526 (this is the KitKat, right?) and if this is not stable enough for me I would install cm-10.2-20131020-NIGHTLY-mb526 (Jelly Bean, right?). The reason I want to change is that I do not think the CM10.1 I have installed is neither stable nor perfomant.
Edit2: I tried the GooManager but it did not work! After reboot into Recovery screen stays black and reboots again.

Hello, i had a similar problem and i finally flashed a new sbf then CM10.1 and after that CM10.2 and it worked. As for recovery the only way that worked for me is with cwm through 2init.apk. CM11 seems unstable atm...

SBF is the only option. The reason why CM10.1 didn't work as intended is that you must have used full gapps.

Hi,
I think I used the minimal Gapps linked in the thread! And no, sbf is not an option right now as I do not have acces to a Windows based PC where I have rights to install software!
Any other solution how I can restore/install TeamWinRecovery? Should I try 2ndinit?
Thanks anyway and regards kernel
There is a method through ADB explained by @YetAnotherForumUser in CM11 thread by Quarx. This if you can enter in boot menu.

adb is neiher an opion, I currently have no acces to a computer with root-acces!
I read somewhere that 2ndinit won't work wih a custom rom installed, ist this correct?
Regards kernel
Yes is correct. You must start from sbf when you have access to a computer.

I have CWM as my recovery and PA on the device.
I got a message today saying a new PA is out and grabbed the zip from goo manager.
Now I understand with goo manager you need a openscript recovery to use that to update though it appears CWM recovery doesn't use that but TWP does.
In CM10 you go to the settings and update from the OTA section in the about tab.
PA doesn't use those OTA updates it seems when CM does.
I would still be using CM but was getting a lot of crashes on M3 so I decided to try a few roms and currently running PA.
So what's the best way to update can I just flash the rom over the top of the current system without formatting first?
Thanks

Move the zip containing the update to /sdcard (your root documents directory, where all your files are stored- ANdroid, Data, DCIM, Downloads, etc), reboot to CWM, flash zip, select zip and go. That should be all you have to do. :good:
It worked fine for me using CWM and the usual method to update (recovery->install zip->select from SD). The only problem I'm having is a DPI issue in the launcher. Make sure to install the newest gapps as well and clear the cache.

Hi! I have some doubts to install custom ROM on Motorola Defy+:
When I install CM on Galaxy Note I directly download from CM website, but when go to look for Defy+ I found only the Defy (not +) and the most newest version is 7, instead 9, 10.1 and 10.2 that I can look searching here in XDA. What is the reason of this difference?
Exist any method that if I not like keep the CM can go back to my Defy+ original ROM and unrooted?
Actually the Defy+ have Android 2.3.5 with the operator ROM.
Thanks for your help!

The Defy/Defy+ has no official support from CM after CM7.2. Quarx2k maintains unofficial and highly stable ROMs for the device, despite its limitation of locked bootloader.
Root with framaroot, then install the 2ndinit app. Open the app, and press install 2ndinit bootmenu. Then reboot, go to recovery (press volume down when blue LED lights up) and take a nandroid backup. It is possible to go back to stock via flashing SBF using RSDLite.

I can do some of the steps but I have a problem:
> Already root with Framaroot: OK
> Already install 2ndinit + Superuser: OK
> Nandroid backup: OK
> In Android Bootmenu I select + Recovery --> Custom Recovery, OK until here.
> I do the wipes, OK also
When I try install the ZIP of CM 10.2 ( cm-10.2-20130801-NIGHTLY-mb526.zip ) the process abort and show me the message:
"(status 0) Installation aborted"
I read that for this error message, and the first time, I need install using DUAL RECOVERY (TWRP). I donwload the ZIP of this DUAL RECOVERY (CWM_TWRP_v3-signed.zip) but now start the problem, after install OK, I can boot again the device and see again the Android Bootmenu, but each time that I select CUSTOM RECOVERY the photo show a blank screen and later the Motorola logo and operator logo loop...
Here I don´t know if this is correct or I miss press something in any step, but I can´t boot again in CW recovery or TWRP...
I turn on the Defy+ normally and see that after wipes, the phone boot normally in a clean stock 2.3.5 if this info is usefull...

After this I need:

Anyone have the link of correct zip of gaaps? I already download one for 4.3 from goo.im but show me a error when I try install.
Thanks again!
UPDATE: I already download a pack from goo.im labeled as: gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip
install done, but after turn on the phone I look that this pack not have Google Play, can be possible?
Phone work perfect but not connect to my local operator no signal, no 3G I select from settings-- Advanced -- Baseband selection -- and America Argentina Claro 3.4.2-107.9 that is my local operator. I reboot, but nothing work Any idea?

Fixed this I change by the 6.14.7 that no have the label of my operator and work!!!
Now look that all work fine after I install one pack of gapps called gapps-jb4.3-20130813-minimal_edited_20130814.zip from this post. All look good but the strange is that I need install all apps manually, not autoinstall when I login. Maybe because is a "minimal" pack, right?
Now I try restore some data from old apps that I made a backup with Titanium, but now titanium tell me that I not have ROOT access. This CM 10.2 ROM lack of root? How I can root again this ROM to can use titanium?
Thanks again!

Yes, the root access is a bug. To enable, go to developer options, root access, disable and enable again.

I see that "quarx" make a good 4.4 kitkat rom for the defy plus and i tried to install it but when i make it appears "error on the .zip file" and the smartphone can't install it.
This are the step that i have make:
1 obviously the root
2 install 2ndInit version 2.3
3 go to recovery mode
4 make "wipe data factory reset"
5 make "wipe dalvick cache"
6 go to install zip from sd card
The version of the zip is the last posted by quarx, i try with the other version but same problem.
Where is wrong? someone can help me? Fortunately before do all this i make the bakup and now i'm returned with the original 2.3.6 motorola rom.
Ps: i repeat, i'm italian and new for this type of work. Please write easily and step-by-step what i have to do. Thanks!!!
Install 4.3, then download and flash update-recovery from 4.4 thread. Now reboot and flash 4.4

Thank you very much!!! :good::good::good: This afternoon (if i have time) i will try and i telling you if it work.
Another two question without open other thread: when the defy is upgraded to 4.4 can i do the overclock with a normal apk or i have to do it in recovery mode? And can i install the patch for make 720p video or it was only for the 2.3.6 version?
For the overclok i see that in some costume rom i can use a apk, in other no.
Apk will work

Do that i boot it and appear "app updating", it rest in this screen for a lot if time, i turn off it, boot again and it doesn't work, wipe again all, re- install cm11+gapps in the same time and now it load in the first screen CyanogenMod and don't start working...re-wipe all, re install only cm11 and now (after a lot of time of loading) it's on but the screen is all black exception to notification bar, and now with the new recovery mode i can't make restore of my original data file and i don't know why!! when i enter in recovery-mode/restore there is nothing...F**k!!! Why i'm the only with tis problem??? :crying::crying::crying::crying:
At the end i have decide to install cm10.2...i see that works well (better than cm11) and is stable. When will be available the 4.5 or higher i'll think if make the upload because if i'll have the same problems of updating i'll killing myself!!! :silly: ... for now it's good the android 4.3. from 2.3.6 to 4.3 is a big jump!!! Now the phone works 100000 times better and faster!!!!
However thanks for the suggestions!!! :good:
Hello,
I want to update my DEFY MB525 to 4.4.
I downloaded all necessary files from the thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515036
In it, it is written "To install KitKat, need update recovery."
I did the update but I don't know how to verify it is ok.
What is the version that I should have ?
When I check, I have the Bootmenu ICS Recovery v5.6.7-jordan.
Is it ok ?
Can somebody help me on this ?

I don't understand what I do wrong ?
TWRP is the name of the recovery. I'll dumb it down for you.
Follow this procedure.
1. Go to the normal recovery (reboot phone, when blue LED lights up, press volume down. Then select custom or stable recovery.)
2. Download this zip to SD card and Install -
http://d-h.st/dWr .
3. Now reboot and press volume down when LED becomes blue.
4. Now, install this from SD card - http://d-h.st/dz8.
5. Immediately install the KitKat zip and then gapps. Also flash the update to the 29-12 build.
6. Reboot.

No, don't use the standard gapps. It's too large and fills up the /system partition. Instead, use banks Core gapps (the file called "12-14_GApps_Core_4.4.2_signed.zip").
Edit: Since you've already tried flashing the standard gapps, your system partition is probably full now. Here's what I'd recommend:
Go into Team Win (TWRP) recovery, and wait at least 30 seconds to make sure that it is behaving in a stable way. (Sometimes TWRP reboots suddenly within the first 20 seconds or so. It's a known bug.) Then flash safewipe.zip to wipe your system, cache, and data partitions. Then flash CM11, followed by the 03.01.14 Update, followed by Core gapps.

Which gapps did you use? If you used standard gapps (rather than core gapps), your system partition is probably full now. Read a few posts above yours for the solution.
Hi,

As far as now, everything is working well.
My previous try was bad (black screen and no access to the apps) because of the GApps ("full" and not "core" ones).

Well in fact I have a little problem.
I no longer have the superuser application.
How can I root the phone again ?
I've been trying to find instructions for installling CM11 (or 10.x for that matter) on my Bravo. The only guides/tutorials I find assume that I know a lot that I don't. Can anyone verify if these instructions are correct? I've included links to where I found each step.
Step 1: Install Drivers
Download and install Bravo drivers from https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481/action/auth
From link in this thread by josuearisty: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1559109
Step 2: Root and bootmenu and recovery
Follow the instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1817842 also by josuearisty.
This roots, installs bootmenu (2nd init) and a recovery image.
Just running runme.bat you will have a Bravo ready to use new roms in less than a minute.
Instructions:
1. Download: http://www.mediafire.com/?yfgvds9a1w8sbds
2. Extract files whenever you want.
3. Enable USB debugging (menu > Settings > Applications > Development) and connect your phone to the PC.

This also has a recovery (or an updated recovery?), is this needed? If so, how do you install this?
For CM10,10.1,10.2 < 07.11.13 users:

Does that sound right? Thanks!
Actually I had to install CM10.1 first, then install CM10.2 and last was to update the recovery.
After the recovery update I was able to install CM11.
So far so good. the only issue had been the crazy battery drain because the default clock have far to much voltage.
A little tweak and the battery is been drain like before (hardly a day of battery).
Any how It nice to see the latest version of android in this ol phone and see it work as my daily driver

Other than that, are these the steps you used?

One more question, how do you update the recovery?
Here's steps I took from stock.
Root and boot
Flash CM7
Boot and then recovery
Flash CM10.2
Boot and then recovery
Flash recovery update for bravo
Boot and then recovery
Flash CM11 and gapps
Bravo recovery

CM11 gapps, must use these

ilmcgee, that's the sort of instructions I'm trying to understand. There's too many assumptions in what the user knows how to do and very little to no way to gain sufficient understanding to understand that abbreviated explanation.
For example, how does one install a new recovery image? It sounds like with the recovery from the (probably out of date CM11 build) that you don't need to progress through the other CM versions.
The Bravo's bootloader isn't unlocked so you must progress through newer roms to update the recovery. As far as I know, the recovery update must be flashed on twrp 2.6.3 and is not a standalone recovery. I do not pretend to understand how all this works, I just try to read and follow the guidance of others before me that know a lot more.

Not able to install ANY custom roms?
This seems recent thread seem to be the closest to my issue.
I have followed the same information as noted on this thread but have not been able to install ANY custom roms. I have tried to install 4 different versions ParanoidAndroid and CM7.2 Kang (and CM10.2 though I understand that it would not work directly from rooted stock). For PA, it seem to install but does not and boot back into rooted stock. For CM7.2 Kang, I get the euroskank bootloop. Which I had to use RSD Lite & *.sbf to reinstall stock, re-root, etc. Spent half the day at it and am lost.
I have had half a dozen Android phones which I have rooted and install custom roms on and I have no idea why this is not taking. Tried TWRP and CWM and same effect. Have even used the Bravo Recovery app as well but also the same.
Bought this phone for my parents and am planning to change it to a seniors phone. Thought I update it to the newest fast stable rom beforehand.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers!
From stock you just need to do the root and boot and then get into your new recovery, volume down at the blue led. Once in recovery make sure to wipe battery, dalvik, cache and do factory reset. Battery and dalvik wipe are in advanced options in cwm. Then install your rom. Always be careful flashing sbf, most dangerous part, I prefer to use linux when flashing sbf.
And as far as new and stable, the cm7 roms are really your best bet for this phone, imo.
