I will be returning back to my S2 (m250k) from the note. I had a few screen issues so I'll be getting a full refund from the vendor.
If anyone here is thinking about upgrading to the Note, feel free to ask questions. I'll provide any insight that I can.
Note experience (in comparison of having owned a S2):
N7000 stock.
Pros:
- Huge, beautiful screen
- Perfect phablet size, I never take my laptop home anymore
- Stylus and note taking is amazing
- Battery life, much much better
Cons (very subjective):
- Doesn't fit my lifestyle. I'm hardly home so I don't get to use it as a tablet as much as I'd like to
- Inconvenient to use as a phone/sms machine. On the s2 I can send texts with one hand extremely easily. Everything I can do with one hand. Note requires both hands most of the time. (Send button is on the very far right.. I use my left hand and my thumb can't reach it unless I'm risking dropping the phone.
- Hard to take it out of pocket when sitting down. I was thinking about buying a watch because I didn't want to check the time on my phone haha.
- Not a very good media player for use at the gym... too big
- Currently it seems 3rd party launchers (adw, go launcher, etc) are all laggier than stock TW. I'm sure this will be fixed in the future.
- Not sure if this is a pro or con, but getting used to this size makes other phones look like phones made for toddlers.
- Low quality videos are blocky. It looks like huge pixels of black on the screen.
I'm very surprised how big the S2 subforum is. This is the first time coming to this subforum although I've had the S2 for 6+ months. I rooted yesterday and tinkered with it a little yesterday and it feels like a brand new phone.
On another note, what are your favorite roms currently for the SG2? There are so many to choose from I don't know where to start. Currently rooted with lulz kernel for m250k e02.

If u want to stay on gingerbread.....flash checkrom....and if u wanna try ics...flash cm9....when i was using gb...i never changed my rom and kept using checrom....but since cm9 has released....there is no way m going bak to gb....cm9 is best out there right now....

Well for me, I'm running on VillainROM 3.0 with SiyahKernel 2.6.4 and Pikachu's Thunderbolt script 2.3.5 - battery life is superb, signal reception is great, i can't complain... even if I got the twitch to try something else sometimes, I don't feel much like it because this phone steals the cake!!

Criskelo Rom is simply amazing, haven't tried CM9 but CM7 was terribly buggy, random reboots which doesn't sound all that bad but gets tedious eventually believe me, also hotspot problems and bluetooth problems as well. Criskelo has an abundance of modifications built in as well as option to change kernel and modem builds on the fly. Take a good look at the thread before you choose anything else, oh and don't bother with ICS leaked builds yet, its terrible, in fact its terrible on my wifes nexus s as well and that's official ota.

Get kTool from the thread here and use it to reboot into kernel's own recovery and downloadmode (also you can back up EFS and dump kernel, a very handy tool!)
I'm picking up a 1 yr old Nexus S. What are the things I should look for - other than obvious physical damage?
And the model I'll get is i9023 - does that model have any problems wrt custom ROM support etc? Or do all ROMs work for both i9020a/t and i9023?
Former Galaxy S2 owner here, so please let me know your Nexus S-specific tips, and fav ROM+kernel combo (prioritizing good battery life).
Also, any slim extended battery(not the ones with bulky extra rear plate) you recommend?
first of all, look for some scratches.

Every ROM I've tried has given me pretty much the same exact screen on time if I really use the phone heavily( almost 4 hours on a good day). This phone doesn't have phenomenal life compared to other phones I've had, but I can make it through a normal work day. No one ROM fits everybody and you're honestly better off searching and experimenting(the joys of having a Nexus device!).
If you're looking for just a stock ROM with a few tweaks here and there, Bugless Beast may be what you're looking for, or Crossbones IIRC. Customizations, which is what Android is all about, you may be better looking at Cyanogenmod, AOKP, Codename Android(CNA), and a crap ton of others.

As for the phone's problems, eh, I had an issue with my microphone. Not sure what was exactly wrong with it. I think the noise screen was messing something up or it was dirty. I ended up opening my phone and cleaning the piece. That was the only problem with mine(got it secondhand too). These phones also have an issue with their power buttons, so make sure that's good before you commit, although there are fixes on here for that. Make sure the phone is legit and not stolen I guess. lol.

Anyway the guy I'm getting it from works at a Samsung office itself, so I guess it is not quite as risky as the usual stranger-in-an-ally thing...

I guess if you were to try to activate it, it would let the person at the desk know. I forgot to add, kernels and governors will effect the battery life along with screen brightness(duh). I prefer ondemand over anything else.
Will experiment kernels, governor etc, I was changing ROMs daily until I found a good combo when I had the S2.
What were you saying about the 'desk'? This is an unlocked phone, so I'm not sure if even activation is required (didn't have any on my previous unlocked phones).
Oh, and any specific brand of extended batteries (specifically those with same dimensions as the original) you'd recommend?
See if don´t have any problems of lost IMEI...
Make sure the power button is in good shape, nice and clicky. These things are notorious for power button failures, and let me tell you it sucks

MIUI (http://www.miuiandroid.com) > they have multi language

But I found all ICS ROMs having a certain issue with the Nexus S with my messaging application crashing. That's why I went with MIUI. It was the only ICS based ROM not crashing.
The best kernel is Air Kernel for Nexus S. The rest is significantly slower. With stock ICS you won't notice much difference. But with resource-heavy MIUI it's plain noticeable
It's possible the bug I mentioned is fixed in latest ICS releases. I haven't looked.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I understood as much about custom ROMs in my time on Galaxy S2.
I'll be trying Boot to Gecko first, just for the heck of it, then MIUI, bugless beast, CNA and CM9 in that order.
Thought of trying Matr1x, Trinity etc. but will add Air to the list of kernels.
Got the Nexus S 12 hrs ago, power button is fine so I remapped power off to search key and made volume buttons awake it.
Tried Bugless beast, slimICS, CM9 and settled on the latter. Have to try out Boot to Gecko, Jelly Bean and MIUI v4 when I get time later this weekend.
Still don't have an slim extended battery, but I'm happy with the battery life so far that I'm having second thoughts on buying one.

Yep that's the reason why I moved to Nexus S (after getting frustrated about lack of stable ICS ROMs on S2 back in the day)...
Basically reiterating what everyone else has said. I also got my Nexus S 2nd hand and I've had it for about 6 months now (coming from a nexus one) and I love it, other than I miss the trackball (I know I'm strange) for waking and LED purposes. Power button being clicky is a must. Obvious scratch marks, etc.
I've played around with many ROMS in my 6 months with my Nexus S. (Codename, Bugless, AOKP, CM9) After trying CM9 RC1 just recently for about 2-3 weeks, I finally just gave in and came back to AOKP (now build 40) and am loving it right now. AOKP just has really nice style, especially with this mod/theme. (thanks mixtapes)
Kernels: I love Voodoo sound/color, it really makes the phone both look beautiful and sound amazing, especially if you have good headphones/speakers. BLN (Back Light Notification) is a must for me as well in a kernel. I really like matr1x right now, tried air kernel few builds back and it was also nice.

I'm a long time SGS2 and a galaxy Note user, and lately I've been thinking about buying an LG G2 (unlocked international).
since I'm a power user who hates Samsung's heavy skin, and seeing how close LG's skin is to that of it's home rival, I need to know how open to modding and flashing the G2 is?
the N7000 was pretty moddable but use anything other than samsung's stock based ROMs, and you have to deal with sudden reboots and crashes, and that's the case with all AOSP ROMs for me (currently running OMNI ROM on it, and it still reboots out of the blue at times)
so is the LG G2 anay different? is it easy to flash new ROMs to? how stable are AOSP ROMs on it? any features to be lost? (like the BIONZ image sensor on sony's z1 for example).
also any other advice and opinions on the device would be highly appreciated

Aosp are generally getting a lot better, a few reboots every day is to be expected, however. The phone is quite moddable, you can install custom recoveries and flash custom Roms, although the bootloader is locked.
You will miss out on quite a few features, but some of them can be flashed back. You might find stock best for you and since you are an sgs2 user I'm sure you will appreciate the fact that dorimanx develops kernels for this beast. Best of luck.

Features to be lost - IR blaster, Qslide, and what not if you're running an AOSP ROM. Knock on works for most AOSP ROMs but Knockoff only works for some.
There're still some bugs with the ROMs, yes, but most should be pretty stable for you to use your G2 as your daily driver.

close your eyes, buy the nexus 5 this is ocming from a X galaxy nexus user ! its easy as **** ! fastboot oem-unlock ,BANG root and do **** from fastboot ! while on the g2 its not that simple, its tough and many people have semi bricked their devices. so if your a flashahoilic like how i used to be, i suggest you get the nexus 5 . so why did i buy a g2 ? frankly speaking, it has everything i want to use in its STOCK ROM ! yup its a dafuq moment right there mate touch to wake,manual focus camera,a HUUUGE battery , good screen on time, a remote ( turned off the projector in college lectures ROFL etc etc ) i love this phone and just waiting for kitkat to be released officially. and also , this phone DOES NOT SLOW DOWN over time ! my friends note 2 got dam slow after about 2 weeks while the g2 is going just buttery smooth even on 4.2.2 . so it depends upon what you want
edit- lg's ui looks similar to the ****whiz of samsung but it does not slow down like ****whiz does
Also on the G2 you can mod just about everything with the Xposed mod, check it out and you will get an idea of what you can do to the G2 with that alone.

Haha! no man I'm not a flashaholic or anything I just want something that works and works smoothly, can you believe I never ever flashed anything on my SGS2? it just worked beautifully on GB, but then I got the note and all that changed, it was slow as ****! had to flash a tons of different ROMs on it! :/
hmmm..now I'm seriously considering the G2! so how's the RAM consumption? the LG UI looks heavy but you guys are saying it's light? like...finally lag free? yay! hmm, and how's the stability of stock? my friend's S4 randomly reboots even on stock, but my brother's HTC ONE never ever rebooted in the 4 months we've bought it
so is the G2 that stable with stock? and did LG improve it's record at software updates? do you expect to receive kitkat soon?
also, the 16 GB version is only 420$ where I live, while the 32GB version is 510$ unlocked, I'm thinking of getting the 16GB version just because if I go with the 32GB then the note 3 is just 70$ away hahahaha!

I would generally consider the 32 gb option the better option here since it's really 10 gb of storage vs 24 gb of storage. You can't mess with partitions - at least nobody tried.
I would slam a case on it anyway since it's so fragile. The zero-gap screen technology makes the digitizer break if the screen breaks.

yeah..but it's also almost a 100$ more :/
I'll have to consider this more carefully I think!
lucky I rarely drop my phone, and with something as big and heavy as the note to be only dropped 3 times in two years (on carpet when I'm lazily using it in bed ) I think I can manage a relatively small device just fine....but yeah a case is a smart idea I guess!

i would most definitely go with the 32gb version. especially if you like to have a bunch of music files or videos on your phone. this phone has a sweet DAC in it, so it makes playing my flac files that much better. i have a 32gb g2 and i have 14gb of space left. if i had a 16gb g2 i'd have low space. g2 tweaksbox, g2 xposed and gravitybox [jb] give you everything you'd want on stock rom that aosp/cm have for jelly bean.

Alright, so ladies and gentlemen, it's time for an update:
I bought a white D802 32GB version a couple of days ago, but didn't really have much time to get online, so far I like it, the speed, the battery life, but there are also a few quirks, occasional stuttering (nothing major, just every once in a while), KNOCK ON doesn't always work from the first time for some reason, and the screen..even though great by any standard, but damn AMOLEDs have spoiled my eyes, I can notice the color shifting from angles and it bothers me at times!
but yeah.......I'm part of the LG G2 XDA club now thx for everything folks

I currently have an I9300 (A.K.A Galaxy S3) and thinking about upgrade to G2. I'm not looking for a advice on this thread but some info. Been on my GS3 since 1,5 years now and I rather know all the pros and cons of my device.
One of them is our Exynos chip that literally kills the device when using AOSP, second one is broken HW composer due the lack of closed source stuff of Samsung. Last but not least is the camera quality, vastly better on stock Touchwiz roms.
Knowing this stuff I have the following questions regarding G2;
1.- G2 uses Snapdragon, so on paper AOSP Roms should work fine (or not as bad as it is on Exynos). Is this really true? How does perform CM11 right now on the G2? I'm planning to stick always with CM or AOSP becouse can't stand stock LG skinned Android. On my S3 I am currently rolling CM11 and it is pretty OK due the great devs we have there. But you guys know, we always want something better
2.- Been reading a lot about the camera on the G2 and all threads say the same, camera quality on Stock is much better than AOSP. The question is; Is this difference big as on the GS3?
I am running away from the abusive closed source policy of Samsung and limited updates (I know is the same with LG but at least you guys don't have an Exynos chip to deal with :silly
Will I be able reach the full of G2 capacity staying at AOSP or it is going to be the same as it happens with my S3?. Am I going to be cursed to stay at stock Android until LG stop supporting the device? Will I be at home with a G2 or should look for a fugly Nexus 5 instead?
Posting this thing on General becouse it could help guys with the same doubts as I do. Hope you don't mind this big wall text.

1. AOSP works fine, you have bucketloads of ROMs out there for the G2 (check Original Development forum).
2. Camera is perfectly fine on both stock and AOSP. Haven't read about any issues.
But seriously, stock ROM + Xposed. You don't need much more than that.

Before G2 I had S3 and Note2 and since both of them have same exynos and camera they were pretty similar in AOSP roms.
With S3 I used AOSP 80% of time (cm11 temasek). On note2 I used lame touchwiz because of spen.
Anyway after switching to G2 I flashed AOSP same day I got it (rooting doesn't void warranty in EU). I got G2 in last december and at that time AOSP was still quite buggy. But now AOSP is nearly as stable as stock.
Regarding your questions:
1. As I said AOSP now is fine, but look for rom that uses kitkat kernel source. In my opinion Mahdi ROM is best for AOSP. CM still uses old jellybean kernel sources that has bugs, so I avoid using it. I have been using Mahdi most of the time and there were only few bugs that were fixed quite fast. I agree that stock LG ui looks awful, but with xposed you can make it look nearly like AOSP (quicksettings and stuff). But you should definitely take a look at G3 roms, they are much better looking.
2. Regarding camera quality yes on AOSP it is a little worse, but in my opinion not as big difference from stock as it was on S3. There are ported stock camera app for AOSP if you want to check that out.
When I switched to G2 I was also looking at Nexus 5 since I am kinda flashoholic. But I am really happy that I got G2 not Nexus5. After I switched from S3 to N2 I got used to great battery of it and G2 has even better battery life than Note2. Plus thoose buttons on back are just the way they should be on all phones.

Oh boy, your words are like a gold mine! Exactly what I was looking for.
My G2 is officially ordered. Hope I'll be joining this part of XDA really soon and say good bye my old fellows I9300 users. Im sure here I'll feel at home :fingers-crossed:.
Have a little couple of questions, they are a little specific so couldn't find precise info. Hope you guys can direct me a little.
1.- You surely know that the most famous Kernel on the i9300 is Boeffla, it has own app to control voltages, sound control, overclock, etc. What is the G2 counter part? (I know Kernels are subjective but want to know where to start )
2.- What are the most used OC arround here for the CPU? (On the i9300 was 1.6Ghz)

1. Well for stock roms there is dorimanx kernel. It has faux sound, overclock, undervolt, etc.
2. With dorimanx you can overclock up to max 2.8 GHz.

s3's camera doesnt even come close to the cam on the g2 ! the quality is unbelievable. just note that night shots do get distorted when its very very dark ! but that happens on all phone cameras so its fine
oh and also cm11 rom doesnt support UHD and 120 FPS slowmo addons i bought this cus of the camera features n battery backup. i cant let it just go

Where did you hear that rooting doesn't void warranty on Europe?
Are you completely 100% sure?
Cause I'm very interested in knowing if this is true.
Only rooting or also installing roms? Installing roms and custom recoveries doesn't void the warranty?

My G2 is awesome. I keep it running stock ROM because I love what LG has done. If you've never tried it before, give it a chance before moving to CM 11. I have Nova installed and using that instead of LG launcher but other than that I really do enjoy all the features that come from LG =).
I compared my phone to a Nexus 5 side by side and it was pretty much the same speed to open apps (Except Viber, it was faster on N5, no idea why..). It's a very smooth phone, even when running LG UI .
My brother has the S3 and it's a good smooth phone but my G2 is an overall better phone.
You won't regret upgrading to it. Just make sure you get one without a touchscreen bug. I was lucky when I bought mine from someone else, it didn't have the touchscreen bug and still does not.
Camera is not the best and I'm considering trading for an S5 or Z2 just for that reason. I would actually go for the Find 7 but a bit too expensive and big. I prefer the camera on the S4 (I had that phone prior to the G2 and I also had the S4 Zoom). The S4 Zoom was the best one with awesome night shots since you can control shutter speed. Sadly we can't control shutter speed on G2 (on Oppo Find 7 we can and K zoom also). Day shots are good on G2 while some shots can really look awesome. It does bokeh effect better than the S4 and looks spectacular for a phone.
Low light shots can be either ok or bad. Too much over-processing going on and white balance isn't the best. I still love my LG G2 though!
I am using xdabbeb's camera mod, by the way, which I suggest you do also if you get the phone.

I thought i would share becacuse i never saw people mention how amazing this phone is on custom rom, probably because satisfied people usually have no need to and simply enjoy their phone.. And i thought i'll create this thread to make those who are a bit insecure (which i was at first) feel more secure.
At first i wanted to download Android L (stock version from LG). Knowing that the bumped liquidSmooth rom is comptabile with my phone i flashed it. Didn't realize it wasn't LG's stock version so i can't comment on it just yet. But one thing i want people to know is that this DEVICE FLIES. It's so freaking fast, it's incredible. I've just rooted, installed twrp and liquidsmooth rom. If i flash again it will be in about an hour or two from now for testing purposes or just skip all of that untill tomorrow. So far i must say i'm verrrrry surprised and so happy to see that it's not the phone's resolution nor hardware that's holding it back, but the software - so to those experiencing lag, lets wait for LG to sort things out. This is a confirmation i needed and maybe many of you out there with the occasional lag, like i had, wanted to hear/know about.
So to not bore you guys too much with my talk, i'll keep it short and simple.
SNAPPY, BUTTERY SMOOTH and RESPONSIVE.
Love this device and faith restored.

after 3 buggy roms that i tried , i am now with androidnow HD 6.1 , and since then i realized that LG freakin SUCK when it comes to software .

Is androidnow HD 6.1 bumped? i wanted to use that one but nothing written about it being bumped or not. Or i'm just blind
Same here, i just got CM12 running on my LG G3 and same experience... Its absolutely amazing. I just dont understand why LG managed to screw things up and ship a broken Rom...
My experience with LG stock ROMs are way better than with Samsung Rom s. Ok, I'll just know Galaxy S1 to S3 and note 2.

This...I came from S3 and sure, they were only dual core for the US models but it was buggy. I just got my G3 and rooted last night. I'll be tickering around with custom ROM's again. CM12 most likely of course.
