[Q] Questions About Backing up ROM with TWRP - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new to the G2 and smartphones without removable SD cards. I had some questions before I plunge ahead with flashing Roms on the G2. I have not flashed a rom yet because I want to be sure I have a working backup just in case I screw something up. I have flashed roms on other phones, but they all had removable SD cards.
So, I have TWRP installed on my phone. If I backup the stock ROM, do I lose that backup if I do the factory reset/cache dalvik wipes? Would I also lose the roms I have placed on my G2?
Thanks. I have done exhaustive searches to no avail.

No, The back up is stored in the Internal Storage partition, As long as you just wipe, /Data /System /cache and/dalvik cache and leave /internal storage alone, you will be fine. So in short, the answer to your question is no.

Thanks very much. I just started the backup and now see where the backup is stored in internal storage.

[Q] Question about nandroid backups location

Hi, I've got a Nexus 10 and I already have rooted and installed TWRP recovery. I'm used to get devices with microsd slot. As this is not the case, I have a noob question.
I'm having problems installing certain apps and I want to try wiping the device and see if after wiping, the installation suceeds. Just in case, I have already taken a nandroid backup, but, as the backup is located in the internal SD, I'm afraid that if I wipe the device, it will also wipe the backup. Will wiping the device erase the TWRP backup too?. The backup is located at /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/...... and so on. I think that wiping the device shouldn't wipe the /sdcard partition, but I'm not sure about this.
Can you please confirm that wiping the device will erase only /data and not /sdcard?
Thanks a lot.

I can't confirm anything; but I'd highly suggest just backing up the nandroid to a computer just in-case. I'm pretty sure though that the nandroid would remain as long as you didn't actually format data.

That's what I've done so far. I have copied the nandroid backup to my PC. I suppose that it's possible, in case the backup is deleted, that I can mount the partition from recovery and then using adb, push the backup in order to restore it. Is this the way to go?.
By the way, what you mean is that the backup will remain as long as I don't format /sdcard, right? Because /data will get formated if I wipe the device, I think.
Thanks.

Not entirely sure; I know in TWRP there's some advanced wipe thing with selections (cache, dalvik, system, something else, usb) and then there's a "Format Data" button.
wiping cache, dalvik, system, and factory reset it will not wipe your "media" partition, also known as your sdcard or internal storage. Doing the "format data" will wipe the whole device including your sdcard.

I finally wiped the device, tested the application I wanted to install and recovered without problems from the TWRP backup that hadn't been deleted. Now that I know that wiping the device solves the problem, I have to backup apps and data for every user, wipe again and recover only apps and data.
Thanks a lot.

[Q] Flashing CM from touchwiz?

When flashing CM 10.2 nighlty from stock TouchWiz, in Clockworkmod Recovery, is it necessary to format /system and format /data before doing so? Also would I lose all nandroid backups that I save internally by doing this?
I think you should read the OP of the ROM before you do anything. It will have the info you need.
You will not lose any data on any SD. It's always recommended to back that up though.

it's my opinion that every user should have a micro sd card. i dont understand why anyone wouldnt pay $10 to have their nandroids, rom, kernel, etc stored safely on a separate piece of media. again, my opinion.
you are wanting to change android versions here in addition to changing ROMs. when you change ROMs, you can just wipe data/factory reset and wipe both caches. when you transition from one version to another, in this case from 4.2.2 to 4.3, you need to format /system and i highly recommend to format /data. this will alleviate headaches down the road and give your device a great, clean point to start from. if you're going to commit to placing a new OS on your device, commit to doing it the best way possible. having a micro sd card will keep all your files safe during these full wipes.
cheers

You should always wipe data/factory reset and format /system when flashing a new ROM.
You will not lose nandroid backups or anything else stored on internal storage. Those things are not stored on /data or /system.

[Q] Question about TWRP backups before I wipe.

I have never had a device without a removable SD and am used to having the contents of my SD protected when I wipe and then flush, i mean flash (hah). When I wipe with TWRP, will I lose my pix, audio, etc as they are not on a separate partition?

If you lost your pix, audio, etc that would really really suck. I don't think I would flash new ROMs daily. So of course the contents of internal SD are protected. UNLESS you choose to wipe internal storage in TWRP so don't mess with those advced options. They call it a factory reset in TWRP but its not like the phone option to factory reset which does wipe internal storage.
Your app data is lost. Just back up with titanium backup. After flashing new ROM install only TB, then restore apps and data (no system apps!) and you're done!
And make sure you have a backup! If anything does go wrong just restore it.
alright so lets say i download a rom and put it on my internal, then i boot into twrp do i just factory reset or what? i dont understand what to wipe to keep internal intact sorrry im a noob
in TWRP do a factory reset and install the new rom (and gapps if its CM rom) and you are golden.
stuck on team win screen
ok I need some serious help my battery is about to die! I rooted my phone last night and this morning I installed twrp 2632 and then rebooted and the phone now will not boot past the twrp screen then I got a call to go to a hospice home and that took several hours in the meantime my phone will not do anything just drain battery! any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

Flashing ROMs with TWRP

I'm coming from the Droid Razr Maxx. With that phone there was an internal and external sd card. I saved everything important on the ext sd card and never had to worry about losing data. Plus with Safestrap I could create up to 4 virtual Rom slots. Yes that system had a modified TWRP system... but it was highly modified.
So, I rooted my VZN g2 just now and installed TWRP via Flashify. I'd like to flash Malladus 1.2.2 but before I do I want to be sure I know which files are safe when I wipe data. I'd like to know how I'm supposed to back up my data since this system is different than what I'm used to. Any help or links would be very useful. Also, is it possible to switch between different ROMs the way I could with Safestrap? Thanks in advance.

When you wipe data/factory reset from recovery your /sdcard contents are fine. No there's no sdcard but the folder is still named so.
I don't know about safe strap. But if you make a nandroid you can flash back and forth between ROMs. Its good to have a nandroid anyways

[Q] formatting internal SD card

Hey Guys,
After doing some reading about Folder & partition structure of Android, I am totally confused & in worse condition.
My question is simple;
Flashing a new ROM does not reset/delete the folder in the internal SD card. Since I have capacity problem, I would like to delete those folders and make fresh start. How can I do this? Is is safe to delete /android/data folder?
Under setting/storage, the sum of all folders is around 5.2 GB, while it shows the total as 8.8 GB. Where is the rest of my space?
Best Regards
I have a GT-I9500, running Arrow ROM 11.0 (android 4.3)
Philz recovery has an option to format the device internal memory.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
9505 has 9.13gb
in recovery before flashing a rom you have to wipe data, system, cache, dalvkit cache, etc
i wist phyl recovery sayd wike internal memory, but there is no option like that, only wipe sdcard1 (external)
Okay this is what you need to do.
First download official firmware through SamMobile, then flash the .tar file through Odin, the boot into recovery, factory reset, the flash the same .tar file again. This will wipe out ALL your data on internal storage and give you a true fresh start. Of course after that if you're not happy you can always flash a custom recovery and flash a ROM.
Thanks for the replies. Going back to original firmware, seems like a tough route.
When I connect my device to windows, it simply allows me to format the SD card. What would happen IF I just do that? Would I brick the phone or loose an irrecoverable important data? (I don't care, If some bloatware does not work or loose its data)

I'm pretty sure if you format the internal card from a Terminal prompt, you will brick your phone.
we already told you you have to WIPE though recovery

No. wiping through philz does not erase your efs directory.
However, you can always backup your efs to be totally safe
