[Q] Screencast black screen? any alternatives? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Finally I got my phone rooted just so I can use a Screen Recorder for my Samsung Galaxy S4.
People recommend to use Screencast, so I did.
Sound is getting recorded but the Screen is ALL Black!
I did the configuration Force GPU Rendering and deactivated HW Overlays.
Any Solutions or alternatives?

The only one that seems to work for me is called "Rec" and it's on the Play Store. You must have a 4.4.2 rom to use it.

Out of curiosity, what does the S4 stock browser do that is different and/or better than Chrome? The stock browser on the S3 didn't seem to do anything different than Chrome from what I could tell. Not sure if that is different on S4 as I skipped that one.

It plays embedded youtube videos without problem. Some on chrome have audio problems, either no audio or it comes out of the ear speaker instead of the rear. That's one thing I can think of that's better

Stock S4 Browser for S5
Well I like the ability to scroll through pages using the sensors like on the s4. I have enabled the hidden features that they have blocked on the s5 with Any Cut. I have shortcuts for Air gestures, Air view, Air wake up, Android beam, Motion settings, Smart Scroll, Download booster and Notification Access. Chrome is ok but I would like to side load the Stock Browser APK. Any help is well appreciated. Thank you
Chrome doesn't support Flash Player. Some web pages still use it, and it's annoying when I get a pop up saying I can't view something.

Is there any alternative without rooting my Note 4?
I'm not very sure if it is worth it to root
Yes. Search in the play store for "screen recorder no root". There are several, but you will need to test to see which will work in your ROM and Note 4 model.
You could record through adb (easy and the results are high quality, search for adb screen recording) or wait for Lollipop which will have something for screen recording build in.
I use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rsupport.mvagent&hl=en works great!
Just downloaded AZ Screen Recorder. Lots of options.
Yep, Az Screen Recorder works fine.

Always on display with a music player control?

Is there any music app that can take advantage of the always on display?

I have wondered about this, too. In fact, it seems to me that Samsung's always on display (AOD) feature is quite severely limited, to the point that I question it has value that exceeds its cost in battery life.
I like my S7 Edge device very much, but I also own a Droid Turbo 2 (basically the same device as the Motorola Moto X Force), and having become accustomed to the exceptionally useful features of its version of an AOD (called Moto Display), I can scarcely believe Samsung's engineers weren't embarrassed to release their flagship's analogous feature, having surely seen their competitor's version.
On the Motorola device, the Moto Display screen only comes on when you look at it or it detects activity in front of the screen.
Unlike Samsung's implementation, Moto Display reacts fully to touch, allowing the following interactions:
* initiate a screen unlock
* view icons of apps that have unseen notifications
* touch an icon to see a preview of the app's notifications
* drag an icon to a notification to initiate an interaction with the notification
It may not seem clear how this works, so here is an example of a frequent use case for me:
We frequently binge-watch various Netflix series on TV via a Chromecast, using my phone as the Netflix controller. When credits roll on an episode, I reach for the device and the Moto Display comes on. One of the icons will be a black and white version of the Netflix icon. I touch the icon, and a Netflix play-control appears at the top of the screen. I drag the Netflix icon to the forward-arrow ("next episode") on the Netflix control. The next episode instantly queues and begins to play on the TV. I move my hand away from the phone and its screen returns to the off state.
This whole process takes about 3 seconds, and is accomplished in a single smooth motion from start to finish. The first time I did it, I instantly appreciated how well thought out this particular user interface design was.
Another way in which the Moto feature excels is that third party app support is pretty much indistinguishable from first party apps, unlike Samsung, where some of the AOD and Edge features are limited to Samsung and affiliate apps.
I really hope Samsung doesn't rest on their laurels here, and continues to improve the Touchwiz AOD experience. They have a long way to go to match their competitor's similar feature, in my opinion.

You guys are expecting to interact with a feature that was solely meant to show the time and notifications... If you want to change music, turn the damn devices on.

I don't think it's unreasonable to hope for a more robust implementation at some point. If people go online and post about what they like and don't like, hopefully it is helpful for manufacturers and developers to gauge the demand for things they may be working on or thinking about developing in the future.
And I'm not at all sure I share your opinion about what Samsung intends as the ultimate boundaries and limitations of their always on display feature. Maybe they just ran out of time and had to settle for something less than they would eventually like to offer.

It's a very logical idea to use ways on for this (with the option to disable it)
Suprised it's not implemented.
Any news?
It could be very useful to change music while driving.
Or is there maybe something like the OPO swiping gestures?
A long press on volume buttons with screen locked to skip or back tracks would help a lot, there's one xposed module to do this but I don't want to root..

I tried a xposed module and it doesnt worked with spotify, only with the music player.
Also the default musicplayer shows up when playing a song and waking up the phone, not like spotify where u directly see the lockscreen. Is there at least a way to make this possible for spotify?

Try XTouchwiz or Physical Button Music Control.
The first should work in theory if you freeze stock music app, and the second used to allow (it's been a couple months since I used it) to select which app would the "next/prev" action be directed to.

I know it's not the best nor ideal, but since I'm stock I'm currently using Samsung Music player and the latest update offered a new feature when not fully unlocking the device but just waking it up shows a full screen cover art with tags and the option to either Skip tracks and Play/pause, not much but better than unlocking the phone whilst driving lol.

With root and xposed u can use a module called xposed additions and use the capacitive buttons for next/previous Song on the lockscreen, thats the best solution for the car i found

When i was at the Samsung Note 7 Launch in NYC ? they told me the Note 7 international version had this and other cool things but the USA version could not because of infringement reasons. I wonder if anyone figured out how to put it in the USA version and the S7E.
note 7 has that option with samsung music, along with a much usefull AOD so i guess we will eventually get it as well once nougat arrives.
You can control any music player from AOD

My friend discovered this option.
you need to double tap.
this video posted by him shows the way
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUpIitwYzlc
Please like the video if you find it helpful:angel:
^^^ You are on Nougat though. Many people aren't, and without Nougat and the updated AOD, you can't control the music player from the AOD screen. It is actually a Grace UI AOD thing, but Grace UI is not on the S7E unless you have Nougat of course. My N7 has Grace UI and it has the much better AOD options you just showed.
Using the device almost a year and never heard of it before. I wonder what else I haven't explored yet

Just being able to play the next track would be and awesome feature in aod

Weird Video on SlingPlayer

I'm getting some weirdness while using Slingplayer on my Samsung S7 Edge. I do not have this problem with my Nexus 6. It's quite distracting. I took a video since it's easier than explaining it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGUfh6tFk_g
Any feedback would be great.
/edit/ Basically, there's a green "screendoor" look whenever the video has the slingplayer overlay and when I change channels the entire video goes green while the same thing on my Nexus 6 is fine with the slingplayer overlay and just black video feed when changing channels. I'm actually pretty surprised no-one else has reported something similar since I can't be the only Samsung S7 user that also has a slingplayer.
I will also add that sometimes the green overlay also happens in slingplayer when I'm streaming and no Slingplayer menu is up...
Looks like you may have to update your video codecs for this player to work.

Any suggestions on how to do that? Furthermore, how would I get Slingplayer to use the updated codecs? I believe the video codecs Slingplayer uses are self-contained...
Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?
FYI, others have reported on the youtube video they had similar issues on their S7. One person mentioned the greenscreen started happening after a Samsung update on an ATT phone (mine is a Tmo). That sucks since I'd think it'll take alot longer for Samsung to fix their code than Sling...
Tmo's recent update did not resolve this. It included other fixes (power/volume? issue, etc).
Update: there is a way to fix this. Thanks to "JG 3" at youtube:
Enable Developer Mode, go in to Developer Options and enable the option called "Turn off hardware overlays" (Always use GPU for screen compositing).
For those more knowledgeable than me: will this impact battery life and is there a way to enable this only when launching Slingplayer?

Are you root/non root?
Which app do you use?
Does it record the audio stream or just what the microphone picks up from the speaker?
I use ACR - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nll.acr
It works perfectly fine to record both sides of the conversation.
The incoming audio is a little on the softer side but still very audible
I paid for the licensed version as well.
What config do you use???

Just add ACR to your unmonitored apps under battery so that Doze does not kill the app

What's so much better of it that it results in the $7 extra premium over ACR licensed version?
Serious question - may switch to it

1. The programmer communicates with you if you have a problem. I've written him over XDA a couple of times, and he has always helped me.
2. If the app does not support the mobile phone (new models on the market), just write to him and he looks at it right away.
3. Regular updates.
4. Many options for recording such as formats, filters etc.
5. When you start the app for the first time, the application will set itself the most suitable settings for that mobile.
6. You don't need to have root.
Look, I tried many apps, but Call Recorder is the first choice for me.

Wow, so might not need root after all!
Galaxy S8 / S8 Plus has more than 28 variants, some of them uses the Qualcomm MSM8998 chip, some of them uses the Samsung Eynos 8895 chip.

I tried Boldbeast but it does not record properly. It asks me to remove all other recorders, which I do not have in the first place. I even removed the default voice recorder, but it still asks me to remove other recorders. Strange. I uninstalled the app.

Most possibly, you enabled the OK Google app in your phone. OK Google is occupying the microphone, it is continuously picking up sound from the microphone to recognize your "voice command", and this blocks Boldbeast working. Please disable the "Settings > Google > Search > Voice > OK Google detection > From any screen" option in your phone, then it works at once.
About the "can not record any call" problem, actually there are 7 possible reasons, have a look at the [001] part in this page: http://www.boldbeast.com/android/call_recorder_troubleshooting.html
Test again, it 100% works.
Used to use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appstar.callrecorder&hl=en
It quit working on my Galaxy S8.
I tried using Boldbeast as some people stated here but it didn't even record. No recordings where found.
I am using ACR as also indicated on here and it seems to be working for the moment.
I am using the AT&T Galaxy S8. do I have the one that doesn't support call recording? I was reasding on other forums and people are saying some S8s are blocked from recording calls.

Samsung Android 7 or Samsung S7 Android 6?
The Android Oreo update has impacted recording on some Samsung S8 and 8+ and all S9's. I've been a paid user of ACR for a year now and it's awesome, but even they are scratching their heads about this b/c it's impacting everyone.
Native call recording is the best, and free. But need root.
