Hey guys!
I have a problem with my Z1!
Everytime I take pictures in the dark, and the flash is enabled, there is a white area in my picture!!
I added pictures so that you can see what I mean!
Is it a hardware or a software problem!? I already talked to the Sony support but there was no solution!
Do you have the same problem??
Thanks for your help!

Do you have the white version by any chance?
I know a few people have mentioned the placement of the camera flash causes some flashback, causing the white marks you see in the pictures, my camera is useless in my case, total whiteout.
Do you have a scrren protector sheet on the backside or a phone case? Try to remove both and check, if the Problem is gone.
I had this problem too, until I realized that it was caused by the protector sheet which scattered the flash light into the camera lens. I solved this by cutting the sheet area between camera and flash in shape of a V. Now the picture artefacts are gone.
Another cause for this effect can be light from the flash, reflected by your fingers. This can happen, even if the fingers are not in front of the lens itself, so you don't see them. I crippled a few photos that way, so now I take care not to touch the upper left corner of the phone while using the camera.

Yes, I have it by any chance when I take pictures in the dark! With the screen protector and without - with case and without!
And now, after 4.3 finally arrived for unbranded devices in Germany, I can slightly see an improvement of this problem!
But anyway its annoying!
But why does that happen? Will Sony send my a new phone when I send it to them? Or is this problem with every Xperia Z1??

Like I already mentioned above - this problem occurs with screen protector/case & without!!
And after updating to 4.3 I could see slightly improvements!
These pictures where taken with the intention not reflecting the light from my fingers!!!
So you can see I already tried almost everything!!
But also in general I expected a better performance of the camera!!
The HDR Mode can only be used with still objects!!??
Who came up with this s**t!?
With my mothers iPhone 4s I can take better HDR pictures!!
but anyway, is there any solution? Do you think Sony can solve this problem (by replacing my phone)?
Because I already talked to the Sony Support, and they said that I should update my phone or doing a reset!
So the support wasn't that problem-solving!

It's not Hardware or Software related, can be with software improved but the main reason is the position of the flash, it's too close to the lens. @Kirkymole already said this. Some people do not take in consideration this issue because with some settings can be improved the quality of the pictures but I actually do not paid a lot of money to waste my time to set up my camera all the time to avoid the white marks on my pictures. Nobody can said I am wrong if I said this, if the flash will be far away from the lens we will get better pictures in low light.
Try with reduced Exposure. In Manual mode you can decrease the Exposure. I tried with decreased Exposure and the picture was way better.

I've seen that before with
a protective case
an extra protecting film
fingers too close to the flash
dirty lens

I have been able to replicate this by taking a photo in poor light normally and then taking another one with my finger overlapping the phone near the flash/lens.

I can concur with the previous 2 posts that the issue is not with the phone but with the holding of the phone. I took pictures in low light and the flash reflected off my finger back onto the lens, even though my finger was not in front of the lens, I then took the same picture holding the phone by my finger nails and there was no interference. It just means that now i will have to hold the phone by the edges (slightly uncomfortable with the phone being so thin) Thanks for the input i couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was but discussing it here helped. It seems so trivial now but thanks guys.

So I tried everything out (again), and I came to the conclusion that the issue is caused by the reflection of my finger... but this time i held my phone like an idiot, and captured the photo with the physical button!
Nevertheless i can barely see a white area i think the problem is solved now...

hi, all dear hd2 users,
In that 'Weird camera colour balance?' thread, some guys are still not convinced that their cameras have the pink problem. For me, I had also thought I am the lucky one who don't have the defect until today.
first thing to remember, do not use flash, because the strong light could make all the pics very white without pink spots;
2, take a clean white paper;
3, take several pictures of a clean white paper;
4, put them in a folder in your pc;
5, then display them in thumbnails.
you will see how obvious the pink spots in the centre are!
don't use the pictures of colourful scenes to do this experiment because they could cover the pink and easily cheat our naked eyes!
attached are some of my pics with pink spot, the bluish one is even with flash.
and one very important thing, don't forget to reply this post to tell me the results!
Cheers!
I dont have the time to do the pictures but you're definitely right, I didnt think I got it but I actually do.
Hope they get this and all the other problems fixed soon.
Its a hardware fault, you need to send your phone back, software will never fix it.

no it isnt, that has been discussed, there is a long thread abtou this already. t was determined 100% to be software. I would post the existing thread but i dont feel like going to search for it Trust me, its there
Hopefully it is really software issue.
I don`t think i have the issue, but god lets hope its not.

I posted on the previous thread that I do not have the problem. I've used the camera a lot of times and never seen this pink blobby-blur thing in the middle of the picture.
On the other hand, I do not spend hours taking pictures of pieces of white paper, or white walls, so I'm not fussed. As it states in the main post of this thread, "don't use the pictures of colourful scenes to do this experiment because they could cover the pink and easily cheat our naked eyes!"
That to me says you don't see this problem unless you go looking for it. Okay, the colour may be slightly off if your phone IS displaying this fault, but if you can't see it with a colour picture, who the hell cares?

I did the above experiment and can see the pink hue when taking pictures of a white piece of paper, but as johncmolyneux says it's not really an issue in normal use. Any camera with a small fixed lens is not going to give the best pictures and is no substitute for a dedicated digital camera with a much larger optical focus lens, especially when taking pictures close-up of a high contrast object. If HTC had fitted a larger lens with optical zoom then this camera would be a far chunkier device and not not to carry around in your pocket as a great all-round communication system.
I never intended the HD2 to replace my compact digital camera anyway, so for, me this isn't a real problem.
I think we will find that the pink tinge problem is hardware related, some digital cameras can suffer from what is called a hot spot. The problem usually only shows up when trying to take an IR photo as its something to do with too much IR light getting through to the sensor. Its possible that the lense on the HTC has a coating problem thats letting too much IR light through to the sensor. If this is the case only replacing the lense will fix it.

Well, its a big problem for me. A phone at that price, and compared to other phones, really should have a better/satisfying camera. I find it unacceptable that my old Diamond takes better pictures!
And yes, its the hardware...i just hope they will return my phone fast or simply give me a new one.
There already is a thread about this.
I suggest the two be merged if possible.

HTC originally said it was a hardware issue. Then they changed their minds and said it was a rare software issue. Then they changed their minds again and said it was a common software issue and that they are working on a hotfix.
I'm not convinced, to be honest: my suspicion is that it really is a hardware issue that HTC intends to try to compensate for in software, and that they're lying about it.

I beg to differ: it's very obvious in normal use. It's MORE obvious when you take a picture of a white piece of paper, sure; but that's just a convenient way to test quickly for what is a universal problem.

It's noticeable if you look for it, I personally didn't notice it till I read about the problem. I'm more inclined to believe it's a software fault as using flash when taking pictures I don't get the pink hue in the middle of the pics so it sounds like something to do with the light balancing algorithm as mentioned in the other thread.

What HTC knows and what HTC publically says aren't necessarily the same thing. Initially they said it was a hardware issue, then they changed their minds. Why? Was it because it is actually a software issue, but HTC tech support gets no information from HTC head office, had to guess, guessed wrong, and was belatedly corrected? Or was it because it's really a hardware issue, tech support knew this and announced it, and head office then suppressed the information in order to protect HTC's reputation and avoid a recall, and is now telling lies? There's no way to tell, but at least one of HTC's statements must be either a mistake or a lie.

Whatever the politics or reasons, I doubt very much that this issue would warrant a recall as it does not render the device unfit for purpose.

IMO, it does.
Even if you disagree, it wouldn't require a formal recall to be extremely damaging to HTC's sales; a lot of people returning their HD's and a lot of others not buying it because of a known hardware issue would be bad enough. HTC has plenty of incentive to lie.
Was digging around in other sections and came across an interesting camera test for the S4.
Any one notice this particular issue ? Every thing must be clear along the focus plane or you have a faulty camera.
There is no depth of field question here, everything is at the same distance (more or less, slight arc, should not matter).
Find the bottle test quite instructive.
There was a topic about this. We see all the xperia z1 get strange focus. We don't know if they have faulty lens or it' s a consequence of the wide-angle lens in a little space, but with the new firmware this phenomenon is less evident

So what is the point of this thread? This is a Sony thread not samsung.
All lenses will have some blurring, especially in the corners. This example you show here has nothing to do with focus but a badly aligned lens, so this person should be taking it back.
So what do you want to know? That no Sony Z1 will have this issue, well maybe, anything is possible, and if it did take it back.

Point is that test made it really easy to see whether the lens has any issues. Samsung or not does not matter.

Hence wanted people to post pictures and say what is & isn't acceptable blurring. That is really what i want to get out of this thread.

That what I've found browsing my problem with "ouf of focus right side", have the same issue with near 30% blurred, and that is completely hardware issue, and more - I had similar on my Xperia ZL (lucky I am)!

Hi XDA,
I just bought my Xperia Z2 yesterday and i went to the batch numbers topic and checked for Issues reported by people there. Fortunatelly i dinot have any issues but today i noticed the front camera quality was very poor. There is a Yellowish reddish tint that appears on the front camera however the back cover is fine. The picture is like thousand of small dots flicker on the screen and if i keep it very close to my face then i can notice it. If I click the Picture the picture seems to be completely fine.
Can any one of you please check and let me know if you are also facing this kind of Issue?

Yes the finished picture is fine but while taking the picture it has a lot of noise. I have checked it with service center guys and they have called me tomorrow to update my firmware to see if issue is resolved otherwise they would replace the phone. However, talking to few people here in XDA it seems that noise issue is there with Sony camera and if the finished picture is fine it is not much of an Issue. So, I am thinking to get the software updated to latest build and then dont take replacement and keep using it.

Yes I agree. The video has hell lot of noise. But the picture comes out clear. I took the phone to service center and they reflashed the firmware and issue was still there. He told me he can replace the phone for me, but i refused as this is only the problem and i dont want to get a newphone which is of a different batch and has hell lot of other Issues.
Yeah, I've had this problem since I got the phone. I made a thread a couple weeks ago about it being an issue. I'm not updated to the current software, but I didn't think it would help, lol.
And it is very important to me as I'm a SnapChat whore in every meaning of the word, and, for some reason, the final image when taken in SnapChat is NOT made better as if it were taken with the Camera app.
I also have a 14w19, and I see what you mean. I don't mind so much as I don't use the front camera a whole lot (only with SnapChat, and the video quality isn't always the nest there anyway). I'm not bothered.
I'm bothered that for $700, the hardware and perhaps software in this case is so obviously flawed. I mean they really advertised the hell out of their camera prowess. But the front camera looks like the whole screen is dipped in sand.
It is clearly a software issue and I think it dosnt matter what batch you have, mine is 14W18 and in with really low light I have this issue but if there is some light left there is no problem at all and also the back camera did not have any kind of this issue in my case.
I'm sure that it's a software issue. Why else would the picture be correct after actually taking it with the built-in Camera app?

is this something that comes across in a video chat or not as in the other person sees the same as well.

I have this too (and I suspect everyone does)
The front camera is quite simply not very good. The reason the captured image comes out slightly differently is most probably because it's a longer exposure (than realtime preview) and there's also some noise reduction in the post processing)
Just got my Z5 and loving it ... except the unit I got DOES seem to suffer from some left-hand blur Kind of sad since when I was testing the unit in the store there didn't seem to be any problem (probably I was looking at around the middle part or probably because I was only using the brochures there as my test shots). Granted, I did come across and pass 2 units that had worse and more obvious blurs than the one I have.
Here are links to the image (right-side up first, then upside-down): http://imgur.com/a/gc1qI
The blur is seen near the top-left corner and also a little bit on the bottom-left corner. This can be seen by observing the leaves and grass. Seeing as the blur is only on the left-hand side, I'm guessing it isn't just due to the wide lens?
I'm a bit troubled if I should have it replaced or not since as mentioned earlier, I came across units with worse blur. Should I have it replaced? Is there really a Z5 / Z5c there with 'perfect' lens with no blur?
Thanks everyone!
They look normal to me, TBH. I could show you pictures from couple other phones with this kind of 'slight' blur. We're talking landscape shots here - not macros. The third one does have some blurs but I could see blur across the whole edge & few other spots (proly due to moving objects and/or shaky hands). But it's your call anyway

Oh really? Probably I'm just nitpicking but it doesn't hurt to be safe. To be honest, my Z1 has a much more pronounced blur than this which I didn't really notice until now when I tried comparing it and looking at the photos carefully.

Sure it's a software problem?
Not a misalignment lenses?
It doesn't look it has blurring -- the slight distortion on the corners tend to be an effect of wide angle lenses

I will buy the Z5, but I'm afraid that blur problem they are talking about! I do not know what to do! Some say it is software, others say it's normal ...
To me, your pics look perfect I have more blur on my Z3 & i never notced before i started reading it in Z5 thread some days ago

Some are very obviously not normal -- the OP in this thread, his camera is fine. I have no idea if it's software or not.

Thanks I can relate because I also had a Z1 that had blurring and didn't realize it till I was comparing its shots with the Z5. I was surprised since I was using it and the camera quite happily for almost 2 years and thought it was normal.
Lucky me I guess for getting a non-defective camera on my Z5

You are right, I saw some pictures that very obviously had the problem like this (upside-down version)

That camera module is damaged. You can see the black lines across the image. If not by factory fault then that can happen if you expose the camera to direct sunlight for to long or IR light like the strobe/laser "cannons" in some concerts and clubs. If that hits the sensor directly then bye bye..!
I took a picture hoping to check if I have the camera blur. Can someone help out? The blur on the plant on the right side is caused by taking the pic close to it. I tried to take it at 180 degrees (2nd pic) but I didn't manage to take a pic close to the other one.

Hi Guys,
I purchased the Galaxy S7 Edge from Uae and now I am back in my hometown.
unfortunately my phone is only a month old and i just noticed that the front camera is misaligned by 1mm or so, you can see more of the black ring and the lens of the camera is more towards the right.
Although the camera works perfect and there are no problems, should i be worried?
I am extremely worried as the phone has no warranty in my country .
Mine is a bit misaligned as well. I wouldn't worry about it as long as it works as it should.

Thank God that is such a relieve as I don't have warranty support in my country and if i go to a service center they are known to rip customers off by selling unwanted parts especially to phones without warranty.
Is this normal, I saw this on other devices and some were aligned correctly?
Could you please share a picture of your device if possible?
Yea dont worry about that. I believe most are like that people just dont look that hard at there phones.

Hi thanks for the reply.

Yea its just a bit off on the bottom of the camera.
You gotta look real hard to see. But its there. Doesnt effect anything since it doesnt cover the lense.
Same here i can see that theres much room on the bottom part of my front camera, but its working fine.

By room you mean the black part correct? As I can see more of the black ring which makes a gap between the lens and the outer ring but again mine is on the left side and not bottom so is that okay?
Yes. Its like the hole in the top glass was cut to big and off ceneter.

Alright thanks a ton
The black one is mines. It has a screen protector on so thats the top offset.
But if you look at the black trim you can see where on the buttom of the camera it has more space then the top as its off center
My wife is the sliver one.
I did my best to take a picture of it. You can see how hers is center.
Either way it dossnt effect the camera.
And fyi these pictures were taken with the phone lol.
My nikon battery was dead.

Thank you so so so much for the pictures.
Mine is somewhat just like yours, I am glad that I'm not the only one.
Your wife's camera also looks a little misaligned from the right or I don't know if its because of the picture.
It's just ironic that a phone with such a hefty price, one would expect some quality and tolerance?
