[Q] Second thoughts after flashing CM11 on Note3 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Figure this...
I rooted my Note3 and happily installed CyanogenMod11 nightly (KK4.4.2). All fine and very happy, but I miss the S Pen features and apps.
How would it be possible to get S Pen features back, but remain on CM11?

You cannot get all the features back however you can try
GMD SPen control, as it has some SPen functions, used it myself without issue.

for pie control and more i use LMT.
great app ! would be cool if you could trigger the pie with the s pen button.

Hmmm... GMD looks promising. Thanks alot. But... does your answer also mean I can forget about re-flashing S-Pen API separately somehow, and re-flashing the original S-Pen apps? Is that a totally stupid idea?
I know some of you readers will think "well, why did you root and flash another rom from the begining, if you liked it before?". Well it was originally full of bloat - we all know that - and the only thing worthy was the S-Pen features and the pen itself.
Anyone tried?
Thanks again.

Yeah you can't flash SPen stuff due to it being dependent on the TouchWiz framework.

i use it for pie only, but it features gestures control and invisible swipe areas too.

Haven't followed this because I don't use the spend, but check this out.

I like the menu pop up when you click the pen, to take screen shots and take a quick note. Honestly I rely on them daily since I use my phone for work also, I probably wont flash due to this.

[Q] S-Pen not working properly in ICS STunner

Hello all,
I am using ICS Stunner Beta 4.3 and happy with it but S-Pen not working properly in Note App like Jotter or Freenote. Palm rejection isn't working properly (when my hand touch the screen, S-Pen got disabled). Is this common problem in ICS Stunner or because I only did dirty install (coming from other ICS Rom) ?
The s-pen functionality is not implemented in AOSP-Roms like ICS-Stunner, because it needs TW
I see, thanks for the information
Is there any ICS ROM capable on palm rejection right now ?

As a matter of fact, yes. Check out ALBA's ROM here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1579301
It is pure TW and has full support in the S-Memo app. The only thing that seems to be wrong right now is the S-Memo Lite application, but you will be using it only if you hold the stylus button and double tap on the screen. This is not a deal breaker, I suppose.
But you are gonna have to live with TW

So wrong this information, s pen works with aosp. Your confusung with s memo app that does not work with aosp because that app needs TW. All other s pen apps on market works.

I see, so problem I experienced (S-Pen got disabled by hand) isn't ROM problem but because I didn't clean install ICS Stunner ? Maybe users with ICS Stunner can share their answer.
Yes. the palm rejection doesn't work either in my device.

S-Pen Apps are missing.

Hello. Today I flashed a rom, and there are no S-Pen applications. Is there a possibility to install them afterwards?
You have posted in the wrong forum.
But to answer your question: no I'm sorry. The s pen apps from samsung need samsungs touchwiz to work. You have to find alternatives. I miss them too :/ but with that said some of the alternatives are quite ok.
Next time search before posting.

It really depends on what ROM you flashed. S-Pen apps are not supported with cm9 or any cm based rom. You can search about it.

It may be semantics, but cm9 does not make the s-pen useless. Sure you can't run Samsung's s-pen applications, but there are applications that seem to use at least some of the s-pen features. I recently downloaded "Papyrus". You can write easily with the pen and it knows the difference between the pen and your finger. (You can write with the pen and erase with your finger). I found this quite effective. The pen button is functional as well. I was so impressed I assigned Papyrus to my "Home, Back" key combination. (I haven't used s-note long enough to know where Papyrus falls short however).

S-pen apps, please re-read my statement. I'm on cm9 nightlies right now and I have tried that. The pen was not taken for granted and I have been using it. Thus, you are stating what I've stated, just made it brief.
What S-Pen apps are there that are not done better with 3rd party apps. I am using Clean Note 3 at the moment but have remaoved all Samsung apps including S-Note. Papyrus is just better than S-Note. In fact I can't remember when I last used the S-Pen as I have terrible hand writing and can't draw so it is wasted on me.
No it cant be. I'd try that also when im on Paranoid android rom.
First. I backup s memo when im on stock ICS.
And try to restore when im on paranoid android.
It says "Application not installed" And it stay in it.
I recommend to use MIUI beta 6 or Criskelo v7 rom.
It has a S memo and S note
I only need the calender. is there a good alternative?
No, and frankly you should have read up better before flashing - it is pretty common knowledge that Samsung exclusive apps aren't going to work on a non-Samsung OS. It is like having Internet Explorer on Linux!

Paranoidandroid 2.+ beta with s pen gestures: Best alternative to Touchwiz roms

Dear All,
I have been using different roms in this forum for my galaxy note n7000 and I would like to thank all the developers and contributors for coming out with innovative ideas to make the best use of the hardware in galaxy note n7000.
I have been using many roms and finally stuck to paranoidandroid 2.+ which in my view is the best jb rom available. Recently utacka has uploaded a beta version with stylus gestures (see post #3150 on this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1871713&page=315) and I have been using it. I wanted to give my feadback on this but, I am a newbie at least in writing in the forum so I can write comments in the development section so, I write here.
I have used pa_n7000-2.22-17OKT2012-035657-beta-Utacka.zip and I have configured the spen as follows..
1. spen double tap : open floatnote (just like smemo in touchwiz)
2. and once you note something on floatnote you can share it with memo which is the best alternative to smemo on cm10
3. I also configured some other apps such as swipe left to open sketchbook, swipe right to open gallery, swipe down for weather etc..
It is still work in progress (WIP) but as it is now its quite good.
I found that not many people on that thread have responded and gave their experiences on the beta version with stylus gestures, so, I would like some people to try this rom and give their feedback in that thread so, that utacka will keep updating it.
Ravi
What wow. I had no idea we can now use the s-pen with paranoid. Nice. Thanks for this man. Hope it gets better.
Hello Ravi,
Thanks so much for giving this writeup.
I was wondering if you could comment: on a screenshot I saw, it looked like enabling S pen gestures disabled use of the button in apps which allow alternate-button input, for example in Memo it triggers the erase tool. Is this the case, or did I misunderstand?
Also, is it possible to trigger the S pen to function as the back and menu buttons, as on stock ROM?

No, not yet. Back + menu doesn't work like on stock. What you can do with the features is starting apps. I didn't test out long enough as to know if it interferes with GNote or similar.
But, I would highly recommend to read thoroughly the warnings by Entropy512: it is a work in progress with an "ugly settings hack (IIRC) whose security consequences are unknown".
If you can deal with it, fair enough.

Ya as you said one should read the warnings before flashing this rom. Also, it does conflict with s-button function in memo. But, what I did was to enable all the spen gestures use them to start apps as described earlier. Take screenshot or make a note with floatnote and share it with memo. And in memo I enabled finger to be used as eraser tool, so I can take notes with stylus and erase with finger even as the fucntion of s button conflicts with spen gestures.
I also agree that its still work in progress, but sofar I have been using this rom for litle over 2 days and found it to be very stable. So, I want maximum people to use it and give feedback to utacka and the cm10 team so that they can come up with roms with imroved spen features.

I think AA1973 has answered your question. spen gestures in cm 10 are still work in progress. I just want keep people working on it, not stop its developments because of luke warm response from users. Hope Utacka will soon update the beta version.
I would drop Sammy roms if cm/paranoid roms could equal the smooth accuracy of the spens flow that Sammy roms seem to have. I am constantly going back and forth between utakas nightlys and rocket ROM, absolutely love paranoid roms, but the spen fluidity is just not as nice as on Sammy roms, I use the spen all the time. Really pleased utakas giving it a go with spen gestures.

PA ROM will be a hit once the s pen features is fully working
I read somewhere that Samsung is promising JB for the SGN... This will be good news, as we can then expect a really good, bug free PA!
EDIT:
Nevermind, I found it myself. The new version of floatnote is posted on another thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803284
Hi,
this sounds pretty cool. Haven't tried the beta versions yet, but that would be one reason to do so (and to encourage Utacka to continue with this).
However, I can't find that "floatnote" app that you talk about. On the market (erm, play store) there's only "floating notes", which only allows keyboard and no hand/pen support. And then there an app called "FloatNote" ( see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1812344 ), however, it doesn't offer any possibility to share the notes ...
Where did you get that app?
Thanks,
Fritz

Recent Applications √
Invoke Search √

I have been using 2.56 for over a week now and it's a great rom. It's like having a new phone!
I am having only one issue, my keyboard, Swiftkey, stops working after reboot. The three suggestions appear as blank buttons when i type.
There seems to be some word suggestions that appear when i tap on a word. That is helpful and i think its new in this rom. But i do want my swiftkey back.
In ICS there was always a notification that allowed me to change keyboards as i typed. It is not happening now. I am not sure if this is a jelly bean thing or a paranoid thing.
I love jb and this rom. The keyboard is my only issue.

Latest PA here with latest Swiftkey installed and not a problem with that, that's strange.... but anyways in your case I would go to app manager, clean the data and uninstall the app first, then wipe cache and dalvik cache from within recovery and once rebooted re-install Swiftkey from Google Play again.
If it helped hit THANKS! Cheers!

Some of the key S-Pen features are indeed already implemented on Utacka's PA and so forth ported to some other hybrid ROMs with PA, but will never be exactly the same as you found them on TW framework..... for full usability of S-Pen and S-Apps I recommend you stick with the stock rom or stock based (ICS or JB leaks) ones
Are you using 2.56 or 2.57?
Reinstalling SwiftKey fixes the problem, but it comes back after reboot.
I have been rebooting my phone daily using llama. Maybe I should stop that.
I'm glad to hear it's working fine for you.

CM10.1 ROM's functionality with s-pen and smart watch.

Hey guys and girls
I understand that custom launchers still allow the s-pen functions to operate.
However, will a custom rom say a cm10.1 based rom allow this as well as allow the syncing between the note and the smart watch?
If not, how could I over come this, I want a cm10.1 which allows me to use all the s=pen functions and smart watch functions properly..
Appreciate any help.
Have you ever read what Cm is all about??
You will loose all TW functions and Smartwatch will notbwork properley.

xposed module is something that only requires root to work and give u the ability to make a LOT of changes on your system, one of them is theme chooser that lets u choose a theme and apply it into your system. if you want touchwiz features + cm "kind of look", give it a try
I don't know when did the rumor started, but with cyanogenmod you can use the spen, however, you cannot use multiwindows, pen-window and all the custom features of touchwiz. But you do have pressure sensitivity in apps that support it (like sketchbook pro, paryrus, lecturenotes..), and if you buy gmd spen control you can use custom gestures in all the apps, like installing a floating memo and launching it with the pen button pressed and doing a double tap ( in an old paranoid android i used in the n7000 gestures where baked in the rom itself).
Unfortunately the smartwatch will not work unless samsung updates the thing to pair with all android phones, because right now it needs very recent versions of touchwiz.
Im so sorry about my english.:silly:

Which touchwiz features are you trying to keep exactly? Most, if not all, can be replicated on an AOSP rom.
More so the s-pen features. I am running aosp ROM on my s3 ATM fine... But obviously with the note I would be looking at using s-pen perhaps even the watch.. I don't think I can do that with aosp can I ?

S-Pen Features in CM11?

Hi I Love the Idea of CM11 and its near stock Android feel. but i dont wanna loose my S-pen Features such as the hover/click/launcher wheel thing. + sticky notes and the handwriting to text recognition.
I have looked around but i dont see any thing saying if it works or not. Could someone please varify if any of the above things do or don work.
I dont mind installing some samsung apps to make it work.
Thanks

To get the full use of the S-Pen you need Touchwiz UI installed. Since the S-Pen is literally a Samsung-only piece of hardware.
Of course this would well and truly remove most of the "Near stock android feel" you like so much. So your best bet is just doing exactly what the guy above me said. GMD software is actually fantastic, when I was using CM on my original Note I always installed GMD first and foremost.
Back then it was purely gesture-based, I haven't used it in years though so it might be even better now.
You should know that there are always alternatives to CM as well that keep TouchWiz and S-Pen functionality but try to keep the UI as a whole, stock. I can't name any off the top of my head but I'm sure a little research on your behalf through the "Android/Original Android Development" threads will bare great results.
Best luck to you. :highfive:
Edit: Just noticed that GMD have come along way since I last used them!
Play Store GMD Apps
Now they have an app that nearly perfectly clones the Air Command menu.
