Just got my N7 the other day. It still has Android 4.3. Most of the instructions for rooting 4.4 involve flashing the whole image.
If I do the OTA update to 4.4 can I still root? Is there a walk-through for this? Do I use the same walk-through and download links for 4.3?
I also want to make sure I understand some of the Rom information. I would like to eventually put CyanogenMod on my N7. Am I correct in understanding that CyanogenMod 10.2 is based off android 4.3? CyanogenMod 11.0 will be based off Andriod 4.4? I was thinking about waiting until CyanogenMod 11.0 before putting a Rom on if this is the case. Any opinions?

You are correct about the CyanogenMod versions. Since I rooted before 4.4, I wouldn't be a good person to tell you about current rooting options.
My opinion: When you change to the CyanogenMod 11 ROM, you are going to lose the things you have your Nexus 7 if you are on a stock ROM. I would check and see if you can update from 10.2 to 11.0 without loosing your stuff. I'm pretty sure it is possible on PA ROMs and I believe CyanogenMod too. For me, that would be important, may not be to you.
P.S - CyanogenMod 11 is already out, right? Never used it but I thought it was alrady. Waiting for a more stable build?
Since this is a nexus device, you will always be able to root your device no matter what version of android you are on.
I do not believe you have to install cm 10.2 to update to cm 11. As long as your custom recovery is up to date you should be fine

I didn't mean he wouldn't be allowed. I was just saying he would need to do a clean wipe before switching ROMs. Therefore if he installed 10.2 while waiting for a more stable build of CM 11, he may not have to fully wipe before switching to CM 11. So my advice was to go ahead and get on CM 10.2 because he is already going to lose his apps/data when he unlocks bootloader/flashes custom recovery, right?
Simplest way to flash cm would be the following...
1. Download and install Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit found in the android development thread for Nexus 7 (2013)
2. Go through initial set up, the toolkit will guide you through.
3. Unlock boot loader under the "unlock" group box in the toolkit. This will completely wipe your device.
4. Download latest CM11 nightly on computer
5. Go to the advanced utilities group box button in the toolkit
6. In the top right corner select the "file is on this computer" button
7. Click flash zip and it will open another form in which you select CM11 ZIP
8. Wait for your device to go through the process
9. Once it loads custom recovery, flash your custom ROM
CM Roms are all pre-rooted (I believe) so you don't need to flash supersu.zip binary
Enjoy!

Is it fairly easy to reinstall the factory image on my N7 if I decide to install Cyanogenmod, but then want to revert it back to an OEM state?
Mine appears to be named "Flo" (KOT49H) but I don't see an image for it here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Do I just need the correct version under the "razor" Wi-Fi heading?
Thanks!

Very easy. Here's the section you're looking for: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#razor
There's a file "flash-all.bat" within that will flash the stock recovery and ROM automatically. You need to unlock the bootloader first, though.

Hey guys, I'm new here.Soon my new Nexus4 will arrive and i have some questions about installing cyanogenmod.
1.Can I install cyanogenmod with the new cm installer on this device??
2.If this is possible and i install cyanogenmod, how do i update the version if a newer one is released ??
3.I red that the cm intaller install a custom recovery too, if i dont like the cyanogen mod can i install other roms or i must do something before ??
4.If i use this cm installer i know that i will lose my warranty, am i right ?? And if yes, is there any posiblity to restore the phone to original state (i mean lock back the bootloader and others) ?
Thanks
On the same page of this forum is a Cyanogenmod Q & A thread, I would start there and READ.

I prefer installing ROMs through a custom recovery because you can unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery without disturbing the phone's existing ROM.

1) Yes
2) In Settings there will be an update option, you can also flash ZIP by downloading them from (http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=mako)
3) Yes, you can install other ROMS and gapps from recovery.
4) Yes, you can use google's stock images to restore your phone to original state.

Not actually, you need to flash it via fastboot after installing device drivers from your computer. Which is a small tool that comes with Android SDK. (You can find it everywhere)
But I am sure there are flashable recovery ZIPs for stock ROMs on this forum.

Here's a link to WUG's toolkit that can help with your Nexus 4: http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
Being that you're a noob (just like me) you may want to try flashing things with the android SDK instead of a toolkit (not saying it's bad, I've actually never used it). I just started messing with my nexus 4 using the SDK and some of the write ups here and found them really helpful and I learned a lot. Then again, if you consider yourself computer illiterate (not saying you are, your choice) you may WANT to use the toolkit. Just my .02.

You can download app as an apk file from their site: http://beta.download.cyanogenmod.org/install
It is a Nexus device, so it is hard to brick it.
I have been using custom ROMS from first day I bought the device and I haven't got a problem. As I said you can revert back to stock ROM or just try another ROM.
No one can warrant you that everything will work and there is always a chance of brick, but not too much if you do everything right.
so just update to latest official version of kitkat and then i use that cm installer without anything to do before like root or unlock bootloader ?
The stability of cm has finally got to me.
Other than a clean flash do I need to perform any special tasks with the file system when downgrading versions?
Also, I am running twrp v2.6.3.4.

Yeah Its not all Its cracked up to be is it. Im off cm as well until a new stable comes out. But Ive gone back and forth between jellybean and kitkat with nothing other than a clean flash.
Awesome. Was afraid I may need to do a compete re format or upgrade twrp, etc. So you have no issue with file structure of any kind?
No just follow instructions and download the ROM and gapps from the malidus thread oh and no need to worry about ota updates messing up your device from what I've heard this ROM has the updater removed

Hi guys,long time lurker here.
I have recently tried to update my old Nexus 2012 to Kitkat, and messed it up!:crying:
I can only get into TWRP now, and only get roms on there via a USB OTG cable.
Thing is, i've tried loads of roms and they all seem to fail. I've obviously messed up somewhere, anyone give me any poiinters?
Cheers.
EDIT
Think I'm sorted - seems i can't update to Kitkat, I tried a 4.2 rom, and all is good.
Note to self - do more research before 'updating':silly:

For stock KitKat, use Nexus Root Toolkit and flash the stock binary, and enable USB debugging! Toolkit really takes over so it's kinda one click.
For a ROM? Update TWRP, CWM, or PhilZ to the latest version and pick a ROM that suits your fancy! Good luck on your journey!

You probably need to update your bootloader to the latest.
You could flash stock 4.2.2 with fastboot.... And when you reboot, it will give you the kit kat ota. Which will update your bootloader and leave you on 4.4.2. Then you just need to flash recovery and root again.

Hi, seymour71...
If you're running Googles official factory stock Android 4.2, then you can download the relevant OTA update(s) from here, directly to your Nexus 7, and flash in CWM or TWRP.
You can find out the specifics of the ROM build number your currently running by going to SETTINGS>>ABOUT TABLET>>BUILD NUMBER on your Nexus 7.
You may need to upgrade incrementally, that is to say, from 4.2 to 4.3 (and their successive point updates) right through to the latest version, Android 4.4.2 (Build number: KOT49H).
NOTE: OTA UPDATES ONLY WORK WITH OFFICIAL UNMODIFIED FACTORY STOCK... If you're running a Custom 4.2 based ROM, then flashing them will fail.
Good luck.

Ged.

I thought i'd just flashed it back to a 4.2 stock rom via the toolkit, but apparently not.

"BeatMod CrystalClear v2.3"... Never heard of that one before. There are some pretty obscure ROMs out there. This one sounds like it has some sort of 'music' orientation.
Anyhow... it's a Custom ROM... and you wont be able to update it to 4.4.2 unless the developer has released a 4.4.2 version.
---------------------------------------------------------
Your best bet is to fastboot flash the official Google factory stock image for your specific Nexus 7(2012) model (WiFi only, or WiFi & 3G).
The Nexus 7(2012) factory image(s) can be found here...
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#nakasi
Instructions on how to fastboot flash can be found here...

Hope this helps.

Ah, it seems I didn't do it right properly first time.
I'm now on 4.2.2 with the build number JDQ39.
Would I be safe to flash a stock 4.4 rom using the toolkit now? It hasn't offered me an ota update - not yet, anyway.
Edit- It's doing it now, I think. Watch this space!
What file can I use to flash 5.0 lollipop if I am already rooted and unlocked with Kitkat 4.4? There are a ton of threads out there that are causing confusion for me and I am already rooted on 4.4.

There are none. Once you flash, you'll have to obtain all the correct files (rootable kernel, new boot image, SuperSU, BusyBox) and reroot it. No way to preserve root over the flash as Google changed the security.
If you just go and download WUGs utility, it will automate it all for you. Get it here -> http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/ and follow the directions. It will download all the necessary files. Just tell it which Nexus 7 you have and what version (which would be the 5.0 version).

Hey guys, just pulled my nexus 7 out. I want to update it to the latest, but it's been so long since I've used it, I don't know where to begin. Right now here's what it's running:
Android 4.3
Model ME370T
Build CleanROM 4.0.0
Kernel 3.1.10 leankernel grouper 43-2-0-+
Whatever I do, I don't want to lose root etc. I would like to update it to either the latest kitkat if available or Lollipop. Have all the bugs been worked out for the most part with the lollipop roms on this tablet? I've only briefed the threads so far.
Should I just use Wug's Nexus Rootkit to do everything? I just don't want to lose root. I know with my ATT s4 you can lock the bootloader with the later updates and just dont wanna make a mistake.
Trying to keep the tablet as close to stock look as possible, but some cosmetic changes aren't too big a deal to me. Cleanrom was pretty good, but I'll have to research some of the new ones now.
Thanks!

At your state you can't keep root without updating. Best way to upgrade is to get the latest factory image (Lollipop LMY47V) and flash that. After that flash latest trwp and flash supersu zip or flash a rom
