[Q] Need to return phone to "stock" - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

First, I'm going to apologize. I know very well that this topic has been covered, even at length (to a degree), but there is so much conflicting information, and so many inconsistencies, that I've decided I need a be-all end-all solution for this.
I purchased my l337 from AT&T back in June. That makes it one of the first shipments of the phone, and would explain why my battery life is absolute (insert 4-letter word here). Apart from that, my screen doesn't function properly in terms of touch-response. Lastly, my NFC crapped-out a few months ago, and hasn't worked regardless of the ROM I run. I am currently running under the following software/stats:
-AOSP 4.4.2 (SlimKat)
-Ktoonz kernel
-PhilZ Touch Recovery
When I purchased the phone, it had whatever stock firmware/radio was current, I believe it was MDL or around there. I did not update the radio or firmware after I got it. What I did do, is root it using the Motochopper method. I then proceeded to install CWM as my custom recovery, and AOSP-based ROMs were ran from then on.
About a month ago, I updated the radio to MK2 (I am not, and have never been on MF3, therefore SafeStrap was never in my equation). I have scoured the Q&A, and General forums for a straight-through explanation on how to return my phone to stock. Unrooted, zero flash-count, stock ROM. I could care less what firmware/radio I flash when it comes to returning it to stock, so long as it functions.
I need this puzzled solved, so that I can return the device for replacement at a Service Center. My brother-in-law works for AT&T, and stressed that they would likely decline it in its current state.
If someone has specific experience with this process, please impart your knowledge. I'll be eternally grateful. If it's just as simple as flashing a stock ROM via Odin (which is what I have read, though the details are muddy at best as to which to flash, and what will or will not brick the phone), I'm familiar with it enough to do that, I just need to be pointed in the direction of a viable file to flash. Just need to get this unit back to a seemingly untouched-by-appearance state.
:good:

If you're on mdl firmware go to sammobile.com for the firmware. You'll download a zip. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file, use that in Odin

I'm currently on MK2. I don't know if that matters or has any bearing on things. Between the tar and md5 files, do both need to be flashed? If so, in which order? Lastly, will this reset the flash-counter, and "unroot" the phone in the process?

Are you sure you're on mk2? You mentioned the mk2 radio but that's different than your firmware being mk2. Also, there is only one Odin file. It has the extension of .tar.md5
If you really are on mk2 then this method will not work for you.

I guess I'm not sure how to answer that. I didn't change the radio or the firmware on the phone prior to rooting it and installing AOSP, but I did change the radio to MK2 after the fact. I know the baseband is currently MK2, but if I understand correctly the firmware is directly affected by the ROM, yes? If so, then it's whatever the 4.4.2 SlimKat ROM is based-on. If not, then the firmware is probably either MDL or earlier.

OK, so then if I understand you correctly, I should be able to flash the above file you mentioned, and I'm good to go there.
I'm still wondering about the flash-counter and whether flashing the .tar.md5 file will unroot the device as well?

You should be good on the file above. I'm not sure on the flash counter. Check out triangle away and see if it works on the i337,mdl firmware. You'll want to use triangle away while you're still rooted. Flashing with odin will remove root.

Yes there is. I'm looking at it right now. You have an SGH-I337. Did you register, it's free and use the table that walks you thru, type, os, model, country

Successful restoration of stock MF3 Recovery!

Hey everyone.
So I jumped the gun and tried to install a custom recovery on my GS4 with MF3. Big mistake, I know. Lucky for me the phone still booted, just recovery was shot. I tried all night to find a solution and all I could find was people referring people like me to Best Buy to maybe get the phone reflashed.
Well, I just fixed it. My wife has a GS4 with MF3 as well. I downloaded an app called "[ROOT] Recovery Tools - Flasher" from the Play Store. Both phones were rooted. I used the tool to "backup" the stock recovery from her phone, I then copied that file from her phone directly to mine. I used "Flash Other Recovery" and selected the backup file from her phone. SUCCESS. Stock recovery was now back.
If you cannot boot and can only get into the "Downloading" screen, then perhaps the backup image from Recovery Tool (An IMG file) can be pushed using Odin? I have no idea. I'm no dev, but I'm very happy to not have a broken recovery anymore.
I was lazy and just used the first file host that popped into Google, but if this works for you then please mirror for others!
Remove the hyphens and copy/paste (I can't include external links, as this is my first actual post)
h-t-t-p://w-w-w-.filedropper.c-o-m/331
Hopefully this is new and I'm not just repeating something everyone already knew, but I had no luck finding a fix for a corrupt MF3.
Good Luck guys, and I take no responsibility if you damage your phone somehow.
EDIT: Apprently a method already existed, although this method doesn't wipe your data!
You could have just used ODIN to flash MF3. You might lose your personal data, but you will have a clean install with recovery. Maybe the method you used might help others that don't want to lose their set-up (personal data and apps) and just need to get the stock recovery back. Thanks for posting about your experience.

Nice! Somehow I missed all of this. In any case I was successful in solving it myself. Hopefully the information will be of some use to someone, even if it's just in not having to wipe their phone. Thanks for the information! I guess having multiple options is at least handy. If I hadn't already figured out a solution you'd have been a life saver though, really. I mean the phone worked fine, but having a broken recovery is just... disconcerting... Lol

soft brick, which tar to use?

ok, so my phone hangs at the SAMSUNG, GALAXY S4 screen no matter what I wipe or flash. I want to odin it back to stock and start over, but all I see are the mk2 and nb1 .tar files. I have one of the very first gs4's, had it first day and it rooted without safestrap. Where are those .tar files to odin?
Go to sammobile.com and search. Get the MDL firmware, and be ready to root and freeze the update or put a ROM on it before it updates and you can't exploit it anymore.

Make sure the download is full. Try different USB ports and different cables. Make sure you have the latest Samsung drivers also. If it's giving you an issue still then you might have partially upgraded and might need to flash a newer firmware, but I would hold off on that as long as possible in order to keep your freedom.

I337 AT&T S4 - Return to Stock (No WiFi)

I recently bit off more than I could chew with my S4 (I337). I had 4.4.2 KitKat on it and wanted to root it to add teathering. I decided thought there was no root for 4.4.2 so I thought I would try downgrading to 4.3 then root. This seemed best because I didn't like the way the SD card is handled in 4.4.2 and some of my apps (like ftp server) have stopped working.
When I got the phone back up from flashing with Odin it says it has version 4.3. My WiFi will not turn on. If I slide the switch to on it slides right back to off and the phone tells me that an operation was block (can't remember the full verbage. I have installed and attempted to install many things on my phone. I have used recovery mode / Odin3 and Kies (Kies doesn't allow much).
At this point I just would like to get my phone back to 4.4.2 with the WiFi working. Then I can restore my backup and be back to square one with a lesson learned.
I have an I337 that currently thinks it has version 4.3 on it. The baseband version is I337UCUFNC1 currently. The build number is JSS15J.I337UCUEMK2.
If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it. I have read and tried many things over a two day period and finally decided to ask for help.
Had this issue before on my Bell Canada S4, but don't recall exact way to fix it.
Think the solution was to find an older (might be newer) stock. I think I used a different version like the Telus Canada version as well and it ended up working. Then you update through kies after.

Wifi does not work because of the modem/kernel mismatch, i.e. MDB modem and MK2 kernel. Not sure what your goal was when you began flashing your phone but since you fortunately did not flash teh MK2 bootloader you are still able to locate the MDB full odin tar and flash back to stock which will resolve your issue.

If you don't care about losing your MDB unlocked bootloader you can get to the latest kitkat firmware by flashing the NB1 full odin tar from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674223, then once flashing is complete go to settings/more/about phone/software update then take the ota update to NC1 which is the latest kitkat version for our phone.
But what I would do is keep your unlocked MDB bootloader and since you already flashed the MK2 AP file you can get your phone running well again by flashing the MK2 modem: https://mega.co.nz/#!pwESna5I!YK7EKG37xXIG1ReB-Z-mfSMoXNkXQ9t2EdMK9ofgJKg
From there, there are still a number of options available to get to kitkat which I won't get into.

Same question, different thread!
Not even an hour ago did I answer the same question in a different thread: How do I get WiFi working on my S4?
Well here you go.
My original answer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-4-4-2-nb1-t2850878/post54978150#post54978150
The problem is, in order to get WiFi working, you need to install the NB1 modules, but to do that, you need to install Safestrap. However, you can not install Safestrap because the app keeps closing on you. There is a simple fix to this, which I will explain later. For now, just read this WHOLE post BEFORE you do anything, and keep in mind that I am NOT held liable if you mess up your phone. Use this at your own risk.
1.) Root your phone
If you're already rooted with something like SuperSU or Superuser, skip this. If not, read ahead. Download and install the Towelroot APK file attached to this post, open it, and click 'make it ra1n'. If your phone didn't reboot, now you have root (they need to trademark that). Now, down below, I also included the APK for SuperSU. Download and install it. Now open it. When you open it, let it install the 'Normal' way, not via the 'TWRP/CWM' way. Also, when it asks you to disable KNOX, say yes, wait a couple of minutes (it will still be loading) and reboot your phone. Open up SuperSU again, click 'Yes' to disable KNOX again, and now you have a good base to start from.
2.) Install Safestrap AFTER fixing the error
The error your are getting is easily fixed. Go to the Play Store and install 'SELinux Mode Changer'. Open it, grant it root access, and change the mode to 'Permissive'. Now, open up Safestrap again (you mentioned you already installed it), and it shouldn't force close. Click 'Install', and if the 'Reboot to Recovery' option below is not grayed out after that then it worked.
3.) Download and install the NB1 modules
On your phone, download the included NB1 modules ZIP file I attached for you, and once that is done you need to reboot. After the Galaxy S4 logo, you'll see a screen that says 'SAFESTRAP: DISABLED' and there will be a little robot. TIP: To enter Safestrap, press the menu button (physical, hardware key) under 'Recovery' at that screen. To continue to Android, press the back key (again, physical) under the 'System' tab. For now, press the menu button under 'Recovery'. Now, click 'Install' which should be in red, click 'Add zips', and navigate to your Downloads folder. Now click on the NB1 modules ZIP you just downloaded. Swipe to install, and reboot. This time, hit the back key under 'System'.
All done!
Now, Android should (and will) boot up, and you'll have working WiFi! If, for some odd reason, you don't have WiFi- do NOT panic! Just search around for the MF3 modules and flash those! All is good, all is good. A lot of this guide was taken from my post about my personal method of SIM unlocking the AT&T Galaxy S4 without the dialer codes or an AT&T SIM. It was just modified a little to work for you.
Remember, hit thanks!

Those are my exact words. Also, the attached files (NB1 modules, SuperSU, Towelroot, etc.) can be found attached to my post in the link above. Have a good night, and best of luck! :good::good::good:

Thanks a ton. I effectively want my phone back as it came from the factory. I'm fine with 4.3 as long as I can update it after the restore to the latest stock firmware (via Kies or OTA). Also, would this remove SafeStrap? Thanks again...
Yes it will remove Safestrap. Your phone will be completely stock. Well, back to MK2. Have to set the whole thing up again too. Pain in the butt but oh well. LOL. If you need more help just ask. good luck.

Thanks for your help, truly appreciate it. It will be my Sunday project!
No problem at all. We all need a little help sometimes. Sunday project? It will only take you about 1/2 hour at the most. And that's if you take a nap while odin is doing its thing. LOL. Again, good luck.

Why can't I restore to 4.3 then update via Kies/ OTA to KitKat? Or are you just giving me the option to restore to KitKat right away?

He's just trying to give you another option if your planning on updrading to nb1, nc1 anyway. Personally, I do it the way I told you. I've gotten fairly good at flashing roms and stuff, but not quite comfortable with some things, yet. I, personally, would just downgrade to mk2 and then kies/ota the rest of the way. You can always reroot with towelroot on nc1 if you want to root again. Especially if your not comfortable doing it the way Ted told you. Just like he told you though. Make sure you have all the files downloaded, drivers on your pc installed first, usb debuggin checked in developer otions though. I've never had a problem downgrading to mk2 with his post. Just follow the directions in post 2 of the link I gave you and you should be good. He has odin 1.85 in the instructions, but I use the latest odin 3.09 and put AP into PDA slot in odin. The rest in the corresponding slots. His files and instructions have helped save me from a lot of screw ups.
Thanks!!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2621279 Read that. It's how i always return to stock mk2. I use the 4 files one. Just unzip it and plug the files into Odin 3.09. Put phone into download mode and hit start on Odin. You do want to go to 4.3 stock right? Cause that's as far back as you can go.

Just want to thank you again. I finally had some time to return back to stock.

"Old" I337 Galaxy S4 failed to root and now won't boot normally

I have two ATT I337's and wanted to root them both. The first and newest one worked fine but it has a busted screen and is locked. It was my test run and went very well except for the wifi problem that many others had trying to load towelroot from the net. Btw, it would be helpful to all going forward if someone would edit those instructions to download say towelroot first!!! I found a solution that I will post later.
Unfortunately my second and primary phone failed early in the process. After I loaded NC1_Stock, it would only boot to either the Recovery menu or the Odin menu. I have tried loading NC1 again, tried NJ4, tried safe mode (will not load), pulling the batt, factory wipe (ouch) and then tried emergency recovery in Kies. NOTHING is working. I did notice that the sticker in this I337 has NO serial number! So with Kies I used the serial from my broken one, on the second one. Unlike my other one which has a serial number on the sticker. So I am not sure if this is an older model, a refurb or what.
I must admit that I did NOT check the original firmware version when I started this process.
In any case I am looking for ANY options to get my i337 working again. Are there any other firmware versions to try? (link pls) Anyone? A phone that only goes into recovery or Odin mode is not much fun!
Honestly, I'm not sure what you did with the two phones with IMEI and stuff lol.
You have to back to NB1 firmware and work from there. Follow this guide until 3rd section on whichever phone you can Odin.
Make sure to completely close or remove Kies software. It's known to cause problems with Odin.

I have gone back to NB1 multiple times(see orig post) and I get the same result. How do I disable Kies if I can only get to recovery or Odin menus? No matter what I do, I can only get to those two menus.

I don't see any mention of NB1 in your original post. If you use the guide I linked to, you don't need to do anything with NC1. You flash NB1 and go straight to OC3.
Just to be sure, you're using this Odin (3.09), right? Because that's the one you need. By disabling Kies, I mean just close the program or remove it from your computer. Both Kies and Odin are independent so you don't need Kies to use Odin and vice versa.
OC3
Apologies. I did not notice that you were saying NB1 instead of NC1. I was able to recover by loading NB1. Thanks! I am using odin 309.
I did try going to NJ4 after recovery, but I lose wifi. Where do I get OC3???

Found it in the link from your first post. After reading through the process I am not sure I really want to go to OC3. Any issue with staying on NB1? Is there a more stable 4.x.x release that I should go to?

OC3 is newest Android version 5.0 (Lollipop). Some people say it eats more battery, but I don't feel any difference. To me, it feel more smoother, faster, and much more fluid. Even my father, who is not tech savvy at all, told me it was faster than before. It's as stable as any 4.x.x. I'd say the update is worth it.
The guide feels longer than it actually takes. You only need to follow sections 1-3 if you want OC3 update. Actually only Section 2 Section 3 since you already have NB1 working. Section 4 is optional. You'll be done within 10 minute max. :good:

You did mean section 3 right? "Upgrading to ROOTED STOCK OC3 (Lollipop) using "keep root" method". Maybe I will give it a try. The download took a while and I still need to go the whole G+ thing.

Yep, I meant Section 3 Root your NB1 if it's not already.
You can avoid G+ thing and download the Flashfire APK directly from here.
