Anyone ever get a Bootloop after your Battery died? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Here's what I have
-i337
-4.4.2 Rom
-KT Kernel
Here's what happened:
-Last night, battery was down to about 10% when I got home (Long sunday). By the time I put it on the charger it was at 7%, but my charger was faulty prior to this instance (It had to be held in at the right angle to keep a connection, charger issue because the others I have at the office work fine).
-Woke up and the phone was stuck in a bootloop. It was like that all night, Battery Symbol will show up empty, and then go into a bootloop at the animation screen.
-Got to work, started charging it in Recovery, it was the only way to charge it without going through the bootloop.
What I have tried:
-Tried doing a Wipe of Cache/Dalvik - still happened
-Tried Deleting the Batterystats.bin file from Data/System - Still bootlooping
-Tried fixing permissions - Nope
I then created a Nandroid of my current system as I didn't have one made for this rom.
Now I'm at the point where I feel like I may only have two choices:
1.) Wait for it to charge to 100% and try the Batterystats delete again
2.) Reinstall the Nandroid I made, even though it may still contain the corrupted file that's causing the bootloop.
Now I ask, of those two possible steps, would you do one or do you have another solution that I could follow?
Yes, it is urgent because my phone is half of my work here. Thank you for reading!

Try flashing different Kernel. ... it might help with bootlooped

Just tried installing another ktweaker kernel I had, still no dice. I can't get my phone to mount the usb from recovery so downloading a new kernel isn't happening.
I'm going to try and restore the nandroid I made, and if that doesn't work I'll just restore an older nandroid from the 4.2 rom I had previously.

You can try to put the kernel in a sdcard.

Working on that now. I can't get TWRP to mount so I can access it through my pc. I'm in the process of updating my drivers again to see if that changes.
Any kernel I should try just in case the one I have reproduces the same issue (as in a different kernel from a different source?)

ok I'm back on an old 4.2.2 rom I had a nandroid of. It loaded up just fine.
Now, I have the nandroid of the 4.4 that kept failing. Any way to fix that so I can restore it without having to reinstall it all over again ?
Edit: fixed my problem by flashing the rom again, and then using nandroid manager to restore everything from my bad nandroid.
Now to make a good copy.

Stuck on bootanimation after live OC change.

Hello everyone.
I got a problem here. As the topic title tells you, I got stuck on the ICS bootanimation. I am running OneCosmic's RC 3.1 and Devil's Kernel. Let me tell you what happened. I raised my Live_OC from 110% to 125%. It froze my phone and automatically boots into CWM after that. And if I turned it on again and got back to the PIN unlocker, it froze again and sends me back to CWM. I did Cache/Dalvik Cache reset, but didn't work. So I figured to reflash the Devil's Kernel which was on my SD card. It didn't work. Then I wiped all the stats and tried again, but it's still stuck on there. I don't know what to fix now. The Devil's Kernel is the only thing I have on my Internal SD card and I cannot reflash another rom/kernel on it. Any ideas how to fix this?
I did not make a Nandroid Backup because I didn't expect this to happen.
You will probably have flash a stock rom via odin and go through the whole rooting and flashing process again. I did a similar thing to you and thats what I ended up having to do. Having a nandroid doesn't fix the problem either, I tried, so don't kick yourself. Just start again

No other choice?? If he can enter CWM, he could just use nstools reset zip from nstools thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1333696 and problem probably solved.
Edit: I'm assuming he's using nstools to liveOC (as I don't even know other apps for that ATM).
Edit 2: I just examined that reset script and it might not work since mounting should be little different (at least in my phone ).
But you could also just mount data in CWM and use adb shell to delete that preferences file (look correct directory from that reset.sh)

Het Guys thanks for replying. I fixed IT myself by reflashing The devils kernel. I got to the installation wizard but IT kept force closing so i couldn't Get in. I tapped The four corners toe skip The installation wizard, reflashed onecosmic rc3.1 and then devil kernel. Now it is working
Thanks for the solution via odin though. I Will keep IT in mind.
Thanks

Phone stuck on "Samsung - Custom" screen after creating TWRP backup. Help please?
I have an ATT S4, that has had CM 10.1 on it running flawlessly pretty much since nightlies started to get released. Decided to try going back to some TW based ROMs. Running the latest nightly, loaded up TWRP, created a backup, as I usually do before swapping roms. Created the backup fine, now it won't boot, it just sits at the Samsung screen with the lock and Custom message. Wiped cache\dalvic, even tried restoring from the backup I just created. Nothing. Tried it with the phone plugged into the computer and without being plugged in (I think I recall it being plugged into USB could cause issues in the past), and still nada. Tried pulling the battery and rebooting about 10 times. Can get into recovery and odin mode perfectly fine still. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks

There are no less than a dozen similar threads about similar problems already. Have you looked at those threads for a possible solution yet? You can find them by using the search function or better yet just doing a visual search of the first few pages of the "General" and "Q&A" sections. Good luck.
Sounds like a ROM and kernel issue. Try flashing a ROM with a loki'd kernel.

I don't see how that could be the case. I didn't flash anything. I just loaded TWRP, created a backup, and rebooted my phone. No ROM\kernel change. Nothing more than creating a backup in TWRP.

I tried searching, the closest one I could find on the first few pages was this one. I just didn't see any specific to my situation because nothing was flashed. Like my response to Tylorw1, all I did was boot into recovery, create a backup, and reboot my phone. Didn't flash a ROM, change a kernel, format anything, etc...
I has this same problem... It happened after every single reboot after flashing various ROMs or anything.. I gave up and went back to CWM and haven't had the problem since :good:

Nope, still on 2.5.0.2. Finally, after a third complete wipe/format and restore from the back I had created (the one that started the whole issue), it works fine. Such a huge pain in the ass.

And you have to be ****ing kidding me. I rebooted into recovery while typing my initial response, just to verify I was still on the 2.5.x.x TWRP. Booted up TWRP, verified that, choose "Reboot System", and same thing. Back to sitting at the Samsung screen. Nandroid backups or not, ditching TWRP as soon as I get it able to boot back up.
Even worse off now than when I started. After my last post, where my phone was doing the same "stuck on Samsung logo" thing, just from booting into TWRP, I decided to swap to a different recovery. Searched for "switch from TWRP to CWM", and found my own post I had made a few months ago, but never went through.
Following those instructions now, I decided on the PhilZ CWM. Head over to that thread, grab the loki'd zip, load up TWRP, and flash the zip. Now I can't even boot into recovery!! It just freezes on the Samsung screen with the blue "recovery booting" text.
Can still get into download mode, so I tried using ODIN to flash PhilZ jflteatt.tar.md5 file, and it fails.
At this point, waiting for the stock 1.6 firmware package to download, so I can just ODIN that.
If anyone has any other suggestions though, they'd be great. Have an hour to try while waiting for that to download

Make sure you get the correct firmware? Go to SamMobile and get the stock firmware from there or go to Adam Outlers "Stock firmware ODIN" thread in the General section (the AMDL firmware link is in that thread you just have to look for it).

Yeah, I meant 1.6gb firmware package. Just forgot the "gb". That's what I'm currently downloading, but trying to recover it with Kies while waiting.
I would like to report I had the same problem.
After changing roms and making a nandroid, and then deciding to switch roms again, I ran into the stuck at Samsung Custom with a lock boot screen. Most roms would boot up once, but a restart or power down would lead to being stuck. I was flashing through TWRP.
I went into TWRP and flashed OUDHS recovery which overrode TWRP and wiped/flashed through OUDHS a new rom.
Problem solved.

Had this problem just now, solved it by fixing permissions.
I am running an MDL based S4, and screwed the pooch. I was going to wipe the internal storage and made the mistake of doing it through TWRP 2.5. Now, I have the same problem of being stuck on the custom boot screen. I have tried to change from TWRP to OUDHS Recovery, but still boot loops to Custom screen. I have tried fresh installs of 4.2 ROMs and 4.4.2 Google Editions. Do I need to flash via ODIN?
Flame away....I know better than this!!!!
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Need help, please!

Hi all,
Recently I've had a few troubles with flashing ROMS, to the point where I cant start my phone without it rebooting. I've been using CWM PhilZ 6.0.4.4, GT-I9505 and I did a full wipe everytime.
Originally I was on Omega 10 and decided to try out a new ROM (phone kept dying at 15% for some reason as well). Flashed PACman ROMs latest nightly and had some troubles getting past the set up as it froze every time, and when I tried rebooting it, it would simply not start. It was suggested to upgrade my recovery, so I did so from PhilZ CWM 3.0.3.3 to 3.0.4.4. Tried it again and it worked fine, but due to my own clumsiness I accidentally restored system data from Omega to PACman. Obviously it wouldn't start properly after that, reflashed again and was very careful to only restore apps (restored SMS as well as .xml). Everything was fine except a few bugs here and there, but then I rebooted it and it just wouldn't start.
After that I tried cyanogenmod, as I thought it would be more stable. Pretty much same thing happened, less bugs but when I tried rebooting it just wouldn't start.
Given up by this point, I tried reflashing Omega v10. It worked perfectly for a few hours, flashed the latest 3minit framework and ausdim kernel. The next day, my phone suddenly died at 42% and when I try to start it up it gets stuck at the Omega logo. Went into recovery, tried doing full wipe again and cant get past setup without it turning off. Furthermore, when I try to reflash, it just unpacks the zip but turns off randomly.
I'm not quite sure what to do next, I'm thinking it's my recovery not doing wipes properly since when I try to wipe dalvik it says "path not found", and if I try to reboot with recovery it says "root may have been lost, would you like to root?"
Sorry for the whole wall of text, just thought all the information would be better than not enough! If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated as I cant even access my phone currently

Seems to me that you are having battery issues. You might need to get a replacement. If that doesn't work you could try flashing a pre-knox ROM though ODIN 3.04. This would mean starting from scratch, but it could be your solution.
Quick question. Are you downloading the ROMs with your phone or downloading them with your computer then moving them to your phone via usb? because it might be your pc's/usb fault.
I also think there's a problem with your battery, it might need to be replaced.

Thanks for the quick reply! Would the battery explain why my ROMS wouldn't start though? Such as how Omega got stuck at the logo. I will try using my friend's battery, or just keeping the phone on charge whilst doing it and see how that works.
Im sending them through Usb currently, is there any other way to get it on my phone as I can't turn it on to send it over wifi :/

Whenever you flash stock tar through Odin, the phone will restart by itself and wipe cache. After it does this, you should factory wipe and no more bootloop, or soft bricks. I would start from scratch if i were you. If you have working custom recovery installed., I would go in and do a format, not a wipe, but format the sdcard and restart into download mode and flash stock tar, cf auto root, and then flash a custom recovery. And then decide what rom to flash.

Thank you for the reply i just got home so I'll try this soon, would it be risky though since my battery and/or cable may be damaged, meaning if it turns off during flashing stock, I'll get a hard brick?
Update: just reflashed Omega whilst it was on a charger and it actually worked.
Does this suggest that the battery is damaged?

I just checked my battery, it does start with BD, and it does appear to be somewhat swollen.. I haven't noticed it before :l Could I just return it to Samsung for a replacement, without going back to stock ROM? I'm currently in Australia, haven't really seen a Samsung support center anywhere nearby.
Update: got my hands on a new battery, everything seems to be working great now. Flashed paranoid android, no reboots or any other problems.
Thank you so much to everyone who helped

[Q] Malladus 1.2.5 stuck at boot.

I've heard ranting and raving about Malladus and I decided to flash it yesterday. It won't take the flash no matter what I do.
I've tried: Flashing 1.2.4, downloading both again to make sure it wasn't a download issue, using different gapps package, using a different lg apps package, using CWM, using TWRP, side-loading... ETC
Bottom line: My phone will not take the ROM. It flashes the LG logo and gets stuck at a black screen where the back-light is on but nothing is displayed on the screen.
I am an experienced flasher and I have no idea what is going on. I am backed up and can get into TWRP to restore so I am all good as far as not being bricked goes but I really want to try out this damn rom.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Did anyone have any luck resolving this? Ive tried with both twrp and cwm and same issue...?
Same problem on my Verizon model. Using twrp 2.6.3.3. Other roms work fine.
How long have you left it at the black screen? Sometimes a fresh load can take up to 10 minutes.
Also, the rom will work without gapps and lgapps, so try just loading the rom. I know you downloaded twice, but did you check the md5 sum either time?

I left it there for a good 15 minutes. I also had it plugged into my laptop. It kept detecting the phone as plugged in. Seems like it is stuck in a bootloop or something. I also tried installing only the ROM without the gapps and lgapps and had the same result. I also checked the MD5 sum and it matched. (I know I'm kinda hijacking this original post, but I think we are all having the exact same issue)

Can you restore your nandroid and flash say, CleanROM 1.0 or DigitalDream 2.1? OR try this:
1. Hold the power button until the device is OFF.
2. Download LG drivers to the PC (LG VZW_United_WHQL_v2.11.1) and LG mobile support tool (B2CAppSetup).
3. Install these packages.
4. Plug in you USB cable into the phone but not the computer.
5. Hold volume up and insert the USB cable to the PC- the phone should boot to 'download mode'.
6. Open the support tool and click Options>Upgrade Recovery, follow the prompts.
7. At the first prompt indentify your phone using IMEI/ESN, then click OK
8. Let it do its thing, the phone will reboot and most likely have a bunch of error messages and some FC's. Just hit okay to all messages, the phone will settle after 2 minutes or so.
9. Download freegee from market and reflash recovery of your choice.
10. Make sure you have a ROM saved to the SD to flash
11. Use freegee to reboot to recovery
12. Once in recovery you can reflash the ROM as normal.
13. Reboot and Profit!
*$* Or you could go back to Stock and start fresh!
*$* BEFORE ANY FLASH ALWAYS STOP and MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP!
Good Luck and if you get stuck let me know

I am able to restore my nandroid backup so I'm not completely stuck without a phone. I will try flashing one of the other ROMs and see how it goes now. Thanks for the help so far.

I was able to install the digital dream rom without any issue. At this point I think its the sequence I did everything. I did the latest ota before installing any Recovery. I used the loki method to install the recovery. In looking at all the roms, it appears that malladus may not be "loki patched" for people already on 12b? Other roms I have tried mention that so thats why I'm speculating this. I am by no means a developer so I might be out in left field on this one. I guess I'll stick with stock or another ROM for now until his next update.
It also looks like people are discussing this on the main ROM forum as well so hopefully it will work in the future.
Thanks again for the help and suggestions.

Wanted to share this if you haven't read it..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449670
I had issues originally and had to flash back to 1.2.3.
What I ended up doing was switching to CWM 6.0.4.4 ( I was using TWRP 2.6.3.3).
His boot skipped the set up wizard as well, which was odd.
His was also the only ROM I ever got stuck on the fastboot screen while using twrp.
Try ( at your own risk obviously) flashing back to an older malladus (wipe all and boot till you get through the set up wizard),
Then back to recovery, do a wipe, without wiping the system partition, Data Cache and Davlik, and flash back to 1.2.5.
I didn't try it on 1.2.5. But that's how I got into 1.2.4.

Thanks.

Are you on 12B OTA? If so, that would be your issue. I took the 12B OTA and tried flashing Malladus and got the same issue you have. You can revert your phone to 11A and that should resolve your issue. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960 it will erase everything on your phone and go back to unroot.

[Q] soft bricked ls980

so i got my g2 back from lg after getting the screen repaired. and of course they set it back to stock. now i expected this and made a backup of cyanogenmod thinking i could just root put on a recovery and reflash the backup and be done super quick.
well i had a hell of a time getting the recovery on but its on there now running newest philz however after I flashed my backup i got stuck in a boot loop. luckily i also kept a copy of the original download of the rom. i checked the md5 and its good however even after doing a clean wipe and install of the base rom i still get stuck in a boot loop. this has been a huge headache and i have no idea what i did wrong.

edit hang on ive got a 10.2 nightly and jb gapps i might have something here will report shortly... nvm i think... it locks up saying "using legacy property environment for update-binary...please upgrade to latest binary"

but cm should still at least boot w/o gapps i've done that with this phone before (when i first got it) and of course i didn't do a nandroid because thats the smart thing to do T_T i was running low on space and figured this was going to be so easy but of course murphy's law got the better of me.

well unless you have adb access to push a zip to your device then that means another trip back to stock(I know what it means to be out of space which is why I actually have an otg with pendrives as my backup) and after that you might want to try one of the latest nightly's and if it still bootloops then there just might be something broken in the builds, you would have to get support from someone who uses the same device/cm

I completely forgot about the zva radio(I had helped someone in the past with a similar issue) and that's great news you by adb working that will make things easier since it gives you more options to fall back on, awaiting to see if you managed to get cm running
Sent from my LG-D800 running stock kk, rooted with philz using XDA app

for some reason cm is still failing to load im going to try installing cm then putting on furnace kernel
edit i remember and succeeded in recreating my secret recipe. first i have an old twrp and 10.2 unofficial nightly thats where i am now. next ill put on a new CWM philz and try putting my CM backup on
another update i finally got my cm 11 backup running however it appears there is damage to the install from back when i made the backup do you know of anyway of repairing an install w/o having to do a reset? really the only noticable problem right now is that i can't use any live wallpapers :/
