I switched over from Verizon and I have had my EVO since the 4th of June. I like the phone, however I get very poor reception. At my house inside, I get 1 bar, sometimes it will be no bars or 2 bars. I used to get excellent reception in my house with Verizon (usually full bars). My wife is on T-Mobile and even she gets 3-4 bars (out of 5 bars) and never has dropped calls. I always get dropped calls.
I used to be able to ride in the elevator in my office and talk on the phone. Quality would drop and i would lose bars (down to 1 or 2) but I would almost never actually drop a call (this is on Verizon). Today, in two elevator rides on the phone, they both dropped.
Now my question is.... is this Sprint or is it the phone?
If it's the phone are there certain ROMs I should try that improve the reception?

You should try to do the little hack to get on verizon towers without being classified as roaming. Check it out, if its sprint then you will see once you try it.

Different radios might work. For the last 4 years I've been an AT&T customer. I understand that CDMA apparently isn't as good at signal building penetration compared to GSM, so that might be a limitation.
However, both Verizon and Sprint utilize CDMA, so I find it odd that someone with Verizon could have a better signal than Sprint, since I'm also told that (assuming your phone has the "roaming towers" option or whatever it's called enabled, and it is by default, at least on my phone) they use the same towers, so why on earth would there be a disparity?
I'm guessing it's the EVO, or something to do with its casing, because some places I get excellent reception indoors, and others, like Sam's Club, is a complete dead zone except for the front third of the store closest to the exit.
That being said, my wifi reception (or at least indicator) totally blows. I hope a firmware update address that and the 30 fps cap, as well as reception (if it's the phone).

It worked for me. From having no bars went to full at home because of Sprint coverage. And the EVO does not have the option of roaming, just the automatic roaming and never worked for me.
About Verizon and Sprint they are both CDMA but they have their own towers. Is not the phone. And at Walmart almost every phone loose signal. I have friends w all carriers and they all get poor signal.

Obtain your MSL (aka Master Subsidy Lock / Password. SIX DIGIT NUMBER)
Dial ##775#, a password prompt should appear. Enter your MSL into this box->hit OK->tap on the "Update PRL" button. Make sure "All Folders" and "Type: prl files" are selected. You should see the downloaded PRL (00001.prl) on the list; Select the PRL->Press Menu->Commit.

try a different radio, or maybe its just the area u are in? on ATT, my friend has an iphone, and i had the fuze, and he always got signals where i didnt, so it could be the phone...
You can't go by bars on CDMA... You can have ZERO bars and still be able to make crystal clear calls and send and receive data on CDMA whereas on GSM you hit 3 bars and your calls start cutting out.
Anyway, I've noticed that the EVO is really crappy with data speeds - but voice quality it is bar none the highest quality cell phone I have ever used.
Well, if the Evo simply has poor reception the Verizon hack shouldn't make a difference.
I like you have poor service in my home, always have. I got an Airave to solve that problem, it works well so long as I also am connected to Wifi otherwise it tends to hop between 1 bar of 3G and full bars of 1xRTT.
I tried the Verizon PRL hack. The signal was a little stronger, inline with what my roommates on Verizon got, but it wouldn't connect to the Airave at all. Did seem to have a hard time maintaining a 3G connection. I wasn't losing the signal, it just seemed to drop the data connection, but I still had a voice connection. Because of that and the airave issue I switched back.
The funny thing is, the EVO has better signal reception than my TP2... it just has crappy data speeds.
really? i get amazing data speeds on 3g, also i found out today that wifi speeds and signals are being fixed via software update from HTC, just got an e-mail from there. something like 700 down and 700 or so up.

If it helps, everybody in NYC knows that Verizon is the best in signal. You can get signal with them where ATT and Sprint can't. ATT has the worst signal in the city of the 3 of them. So it might be the carrier. I don't know if this is true somewhere else.

It's Horrible!!!! hehe I've been having nightmares because of that. It was really slow on the sprint network, and the airave was getting my phone crazy changing between connections.

I have a simular issue, so I called sprint today and the tech found that the tower nearest me (about 1 mile away) was "out" so that was my problem so he generated a ticket to fix the tower. The funny thing is that he indicated that in general thier system can not tell them when a tower is out, customers generally call and indicate a service issue then they can remotely check the towers in question for issues . Man that is not the best way to check towers . Oh well the tower I need should be fixed in about 24 hours based on the tech I talked to.......he also said good thing I called Man they have a nutty system
Verizon's method of checking towers isn't much better if all they have is one guy walking around asking "can you hear me now?"

i've found it to be the opposite in my city. verizon is terrible and sprint is awesome. maybe in your area, sprint just isn't as good as verizon? don't think it's the evo.
This is easy to check.
Go to a different area and see if the signal gets better.
My own evo is better than my old TP2, much better reception (I don't roam at work, on the basement floor, whereas TP2 used to constantly) and 2-2.2 down / 0.6 up Mbps.

I just switched from a TP2 to the Evo and I found things to be quite the opposite. Constantly 1 - 2 bars less of service with the evo dropping to 'no service' where the TP2 at least had 1 or 2 bars. After many years with HTC products, Fuze, Tilt2 on ATT and the TP2 and EVO with Sprint I have found that its really hit or miss with their products. Some phones of even the same make and model are just better then others. The first Fuze I got had horrible horrible service. Went to the ATT store and they agreed, warranty replacement phone worked beautiful. Now with that said the EVO does seem to have consistently faster data speeds then the TP2 did. Between 600 - 900 with the TP2 and up wards of 1480 on a test I did yesterday with the evo. Still no where near the 2000 - 2500 the ATT network provided but they ticked me off with their two week tower outage in this area... what good is speed if the phone doesn't work?
when I am at work or around outside at my work I cannot connect to the 4G network. No wireless is around, so 4G is on. I try to browse a site like this one, nothing happens. it just loads and never gets to the next page.
yet I pick up my phone right now and it instantly works using browser.

I was able to get 4G at work fine today, watched youtube.

4G is still a new system. It's buggy and the signal is awkward. You're fine in one spot but move two steps to the left and you won't have it anymore. Just gotta hope that where you're standing has reception.
I don't actually understand how you get internet at all if it's not wireless. I suppose I could wikipedia that.
anyway, can I go down to 3G or 2G if I am not getting internet on 4G?

I am almost always in 4G areas with Verizon, Fayetteville and Charlotte, NC, and Charleston, SC. The speeds are generally pretty good (varies between 14 Mbps to 6, starting to trend lower more consistently with more customers hopping on). I will generally lose signal on the lower floor of any multi-story building. But there seem to be noticeable outages, both from my phone (Samsung Droid Charge) and from the network.
I can generally tell which one it is by restarting my phone, so that may be a good way to diagnose whether the outages you're experiencing are hardware or network based. I can vouch for the fact that 4G coverage in Fayetteville has almost daily down times that vary from about 5-10 minutes.
Wow I thought 4G freezing was just a SideKick 4G problem.
My fix is to just turn mobile data off then back on.

I read that T-Mobile implemented 1900 in the area but so far I haven't seen a single benefit, and GS2 can't even access 1900, N4 can.
This past month building penetration is driving me nuts. Outside get 4-5 bars, once I step inside its either 1 bar or No Service.

Had similar problem. Owned S2 before and was not getting signal on N4 where S2 used to get.
However the newer .48 baseband that comes with 4.2.2 vastly improved the situation. Now am getting signal where S2 never got and at the
same time there are still some places I don't get signal on N4 where S2 used to get.
^ I am on 48 now and haven't notice any improvement at my work location. I remember I was able to talk on Gnex while seating at desk and now with N4 I have to go next to window.
At the same time, my wife is using Gnex and she still doesn't get any service at work even after the so called 20% better indoor coverage. And I checked, her town falls under the improved towers that support 1900 3G. Same situation today in mall....No Service on N4 in city that was supposedly improved. I wasn't getting service in mall 5 years ago and I don't get any now....

In that case wouldn't it be easier just switch to 2G in settings or better yet have a 2G/3G switch in CM notification panel?
I am pretty sure it doesnt work though, I remember trying that some time ago.
Doing my suggestion, I gain between 5-12db+/-
Wcdma set to 2G or gsm auto prl settings do not yield the same result.

Tried. Doesnt seem to be any different switching to GSM Only or simply switching to 2G. And 2G jumps from 4 bars to 2 to No Service again. Its probably a bit better because in 2G mode phone avoids jumping to 3G network. In 2G I can actually make a phone call now, but internet is so slow that its hardly working.
and yet again i am facing this issue and its even more frustrating
I moved to a different job location and just like before there is no service at my desk and on top of this now I get 0-bars service outside.....completely NO service once you close the office door (just a regular 1 story none-commercial house made from wood)
So now both me and my wife cannot use our phones at least 8 hours per day (she works at different location but also gets NO service) And again whats funny is that Sprint, ATT, and Verizon work fine in both locations.

tmobile has their own towers as well as free roaming on other company's towers (ATT etc...). Not sure if you knew that already or not, but it sounds like your phone isn't roaming on those towers that it should be. Do you have the allow roaming features checked? Last I was with them roaming was completely free but I would double check.

roaming is checked. ATT service is there. but Tmobile phones (not just mine) do not roam there. i suppose roaming is where tmobiles does not have any coverage at all, but if coverage is spotty then there is no roaming.
I only have 2 options now. Jump on ATT or get phone that supports WIFI calling (Galaxy S4 or HTC One). I tried GrooveIp for my Nexus 4 but it just doesnt work as good as Wifi-calling
Tmo gave me 2 choices, stay with them and pay $200 migration fee (get different service and phone) or cancel service and pay $200 fee. What a great business strategy.... $200 to migrate, retail price for phone, plus monthly service charge......or $200 to cancel. I wonder if T-Mobile or rep was just stupid.

So where I live T-Mobile's coverage isn't the best, especially when moving between cities there are some places that are just dead zones when it comes to T-Mobile.
I know there's other networks I can roam to but there seems to be no options on my Nexus 4 to do this automatically. So anytime I want to roam I'm stuck going into settings and trying to connect to the other network several times before it ever decides to connect.
So my question is, is there a way to setup seamless roaming on the nexus 4 so I don't see deadspots when traveling in or between towns?
Switching to ATT as my service provider isn't really an option because of their pricing and save these few instances of no service I'd much rather keep T-Mobile because I actually get service in my house, where I don't with ATT.

There's no easy way to that because your phone is always searching for your home network... And if there is no signal and they have a roaming agreement with another provider, that's when your phone switches to the other network. For example: when I go skiing in Vermont my phone roams on At&t when skiing in New Hampshire- phone roams on network called Unicel. Although At&t network is available at the same spot phone would not register and only roam on Unicel

You don't roam just because you lose T-Mobile signal - the T-Mobile/AT&T agreement only covers specific areas where T-Mobile had no presence. If you're not in one if those areas, you don't roam.

It's not the phone, it's your carrier. Where I live, they contract out to AT&T and US cellular for roaming. It will always stay with T-Mobile, unless the T-Mobile towers are out of range, then it will automatically find the strongest roaming tower. If there are no towers that T-Mobile has contracted out for roaming, then you lose all signal.

The areas I'm getting deadspots in are shown on the coverage map as service partner areas. The only other GSM network out here is ATT and I have been able to roam onto them in the past out here.
However instead of seamlessly switching over to the service partner when it hits one of these service partner areas my device acts as if it's in a deadzone instead just going to no signal.
So if it's not my phone then T-Mobile's coverage map may be completely useless, since it says the areas I've noticed my phone drop signal completely are suppose to be covered at the very least by a service partner.

People always assume that because Verizon is the biggest that it covers every square inch of the United States. This of course, is not true. There are going to be areas where you have crappy signal or no signal at all. There are quite a few places in California where I have no signal but someone with AT&T does. It's just the way it is. I would check with Verizon and make sure you're covered in that area. If you're not. You might want to consider going back to AT&T
Many things factor into signal, as well. Different carriers use different frequencies and wavelengths, and different things impact the reception of those frequencies differently. I worked in a building where Sprint signal was 100% all the time, but Verizon was crap. They had film on the windows (the help block sun and keep AC costs down) that didn't play well with VZW. When the company started moving to VZW for their company provided phones, it became a real issue (personal phones didn't really matter to them), and the film was changed.
Stucco/cement buildings aren't great for phone reception of any kind, but for all you know, there could have been an AT&T tower very near you, and the VZW tower is simply further away. Going inside the building further impedes that signal, so you get less of it on VZW.
To answer your other question, 1X is 2G service, and the slowest speed that Verizon has. 1X/2G, 3G and 4G LTE. It (usually) means that it is the best signal available and your phone is using it for a constant connection, vs. spotty 3G/4G. Again, this can be based on frequencies and bands within the VZW spectrum, and shouldn't really be compared to another phone on another carrier.

Verizon has by far the best and most uniform coverage nationwide, but no US carrier is excellent, and every carrier has their strong spots and their weak spots, necessitating - unfortunately - choosing a carrier based on your location.
It sounds like where you work is a Verizon weak spot, and an AT&T strong spot.
Essentially, if you were to choose a random spot - any spot - within the U.S., and do this a hundred to a thousand times, Verizon would - on average - perform better than anyone else, but in any given spot, Verizon could suck, and someone else could be better.
Not sure how it is these days, but back in the day of iPhone exclusivity on AT&T, AT&T was pretty much unusable in all of New York City.
I switched from AT&T to Verizon 2-3 years ago (giving up my unlimited data in the process) because here in Boston I was simply getting too many dropped calls on AT&T. Verizon was a clear improvement, but still not perfect.
generally around here in the greater Boston area the consensus is:
Verizon > AT&T >> TMobile > Sprint > those other nobodies.

Your title is a little mis-leading.
In any given location, any particular carrier may have more or less signal coverage than any of the other carriers. Sounds like you just happen to work in a place where AT&T coverage is better. That doesn't mean that Verizon's coverage is "horrible", because NO carrier can state that they work everywhere.
If it's that bad, you may want to consider returning the phone and switching back.

But you're not losing your CDMA signal, you're losing your LTE signal. It's just the tower, or the frequency Verizon has there. Maybe Verizon has high frequency at your location and therefore it can't penetrate the building. Use LTE discovery to find out which band you have.

Not quite, 4G is LTE. LTE is more similar to GSM than it is to CDMA, but it is not GSM.
Verizon uses 700, 850, 1700, and 2100MHz for LTE. ATT uses 700, 850, 1700, 1900, and 2100MHz for LTE. In the case of both carriers, there are generally not more than 1 or 2 of those frequencies in any given area and they are not always the same ones for both carries. Some areas have the lower frequencies which allows the signal to pass through buildings more easily, other areas have the higher frequencies which allows the signal to be bounced off of buildings which results in poorer building penetration, but can result in increased signal outside due to the signal being bounced off of surrounding surfaces. In your case you are almost definitely in a low frequency ATT and high frequency Verizon area. It is also possible that your work has a signal booster for ATT, but not for Verizon and that may be why you see dramatically better ATT signal there. No carrier is best everywhere, but Verizon is best in more places than any other US carrier. If you live/work in an area that ATT is better you should probably just go back to them.

Verizon used to be better for me. I notice a pattern now where upon arrival to my house my signal goes from 3 to 5 bars of LTE to two or 1 or drops to 3g. Not only at my current residence but my last one as well. Like throttled down at home. I live in a flat city that should not have dead zones.
I live in a city with full coverage from all the carriers, but Verizon is the only carrier that keeps me connected from Philly to AC and back.

Verizon uses 700, 850, 1700, and 2100MHz for LTE. ATT uses 700, 850, 1700, 1900, and 2100MHz for LTE. its funny that you mention signal boosters, actually its opposite, my work has no boosters for ATT and has couple for Verizon.... the problem is that they boosters they have bought go thought internet connection, the internet connection is a standard T1 line shared by about 500-700 workers some with workstations and smartphones on wifi and some with both.
When I was outside work, I was on LTE band 4.
inside work I have 3G with one-two bars that every 20+ minutes disconnect and drop to 1x, the sucky thing is that even when those 1-2 bars are present data doesn't work.
and WiFi is so saturated and its useless too....
Before someone says that the trouble is caused by Verizon boosters, before the boosters were put in place, there was zero Verizon signal inside the building, again outside was fine.

I'm not going to rehash all of what has been said, but there are two items you need to keep in mind.
First, you should check to see if you are in an XLTE area. XLTE makes use of the AWS spectrum and will do a better job of penetrating buildings.
Second, and most important .... If you have both a regular Verizon signal AND a Verizon Network Extender signal, the radios are designed to latch onto the Network Extender assuming that it will provide the best cell reception. The network extender is designed to make sure PHONE CALLS get through, and nothing more. The first and second generation Network Extenders provided only 1x data, while the latest generation Network Extenders provide 3G. There are no 4G LTE Network Extenders. As long as you are latching onto a network extender, you will NOT have good data. Period. You'll have great phone calls though. The "bars" reflect DATA coverage, not voice coverage. Phone calls will be fine even with zero bars. Data will be slow no matter what.
Again, the network extenders are meant to make certain people can make and receive PHONE CALLS (it is a cell phone after all) and not data.
Also, band 4 is the highest frequency that VZW uses for LTE and therefore the worst at penetrating buildings.

so basically Verizon sucks In the area where my work is. why would they use a band that is worse at penetrating buildings since this is mostly industrial park with warehouse like buildings and buildings with thick concrete walls.

Basically yeah. The boosters that your work uses aren't helping either when it comes to data, they actually probably make the problem even worse as another person pointed out. The carriers own licenses for different bands or spectrums in different areas. They can only use the ones that they own in the areas that they own them. There are many reasons why a carrier may purchase higher frequencies in some areas, but the main one is that they just have to buy what is available and that's probably what happened in that area. In some scenarios the higher frequencies do perform better, building penetration just isn't one of the things that they do well.

I thought that VZW had band 13 everywhere they have LTE. I thought they just started adding Band 4, so if you connect to Band 4 then 13 is present. Otherwise, all the old VZW phones would not get LTE at all.
there are other people in the office that have verizon and same ****ty service.
we are looking into purchasing this for work, http://www.wilsonamplifiers.com/wilson-ag-pro-4g-70db-amplifier-kit-461104/
just not sure how this will play with current 3G repeaters that are in the building.
