I have a feeling I'm missing sometihng.... - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I've downloaded and installed CM11 nightly (20140112, clean wipe) on both mine and my wife's N4, and super user isn't working right. I mean it says that Romtoolbox Pro has permissions...but it won't let it do anything. I can't remount using adb. I can't Mount rw using adb...
Does SU/root even work with 4.4?

Try installing supersu from market, it worked for me (after flashing supersu by recovery)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu

So this is a common issue?

Phil'z is cwm and cwm always have issues with root does not stick. However, try to use latest cwm 6.0.4.5 instead of phil'z (cause it might be outdated) or better yet, use latest twrp 2.3.6.6. Link to twrp is in my sign.

There's no reason to install SuperSU from the Play Store if you flash the zip file via the recovery. It installs the apk and Binaries at the same time. Play store only the app.

CM's built in superuser should be working fine!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk

Yeah go into settings of supersu. There's an option with cm superuser. You have to tick that (as I remembered someone posted before).

I'll double check...I'll try another Recover (I was at the latest available for the N4)...

I just don't get it...it doesn't work. Tried unchecking the box in the stock SU menu...running latest twrp...flashed that zip, installed it from the store (tried one, then the other, then both)....I can't be the only one having this issue...

Soooo....the zip posted by Berrydroidcafe worked...you have to uncheck "respect Cyanogenmod Super user"...or something to that extent...it's in the settings....Thanks a lot bud.

[Q] Error installing Android 4.3

So I got the OTA update, but after downloading it, the install failed (dead android says: error), then the Nexus 7 reboots to 4.2.2.
I already did a factory reset, but it didn't help either...
Anyone with the same issue?

looks like your SystemUI.apk has been modified not in original. I would recommend to get copy of systemUI.apk from stock 4.2.2 and copy it to your tablet and using file explorer, replace it. and give a try.

my OTA failed too, different error. this usually always the case if /system/ folder integrity check failure (error 7), means files in /system/ folder are not original or modified. Yours does not give any details, but I bet it is. to see what error, try to flash it thru CWM or any other custom recovery you use.

I guess I'll download the Nexus Toolkit, click on the flash stock + unroot button, so it flashes the stock 4.2.2 and then I'll try to OTA update again.
I already unrooted, but I think it's not a problem.
Seems like it is not fixable!
I used fast boot to push my missing file.
I used es file explorer.
I used titanium back up to make the app, system...
No way, nothing. Not the slightest luck.
(My missing app is xt9ime.apk)
I haaaaaate this situation.
the worst thing is that xt9ime.apk is asus keyboard, and it is disabled by google on nexus 7.
why should not having an app that they don't want to use be a problem. X(

Are you guys with errors using SuperSU? If so what version?
It seems like that the last couple versions touch a file used by OTAs. The Dev recommends using the "Full Unroot" option in the SuperSU app prior to accepting the OTA.

Sadness.
Fastboot is a utility used to control the base fastboot firmware on many Android devices. It lets you do low-level actions such as flashing a custom recovery, ROM, or kernel. Toolkits run fastboot behind the scene, but automate the commands for newer users.
I had exactly the same problem and after trying a few things, I just found a working solution for my Nexus 7.
I used the same tool I used to unlock and root a few months ago: Nexus Root Toolkit 1.6.3.
I made a backup of my files first, my idea being to reflash the 4.2.2 rom
I downloaded the system file here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#occamjwr66v
Then, in the Nexus Root Kit, launch " flash stock + unroot" and select the downloaded system file.
The flash lasts 5 minutes, and the system will reboot.
Then you need to reactivate the usb debugging .
The next action is to relock the Nexus, with the "OEM Lock" in Nexus Root Toolkit.
The system will reboot after flash.
Then, the 4.3 update will be available automaticaly but this time the installation won't crash.
I hope this could help.

Thanks for the idea. I used a similar approach with different steps and got 4.3 and root back.
I had stock 4.2.2, stock recovery, rooted (SuperSU).
Backup data.
From the Toolkit at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809195
- "9. Download, Extract + Flash Google Factory Stock Rom"
- Download Stock Image
- "15. Android 4.2.2 (Build JDQ39)
... followed directions to download and flash WITHOUT wiping USERDATA
I did NOT do the "relock the Nexus, with the OEM Lock".
After flashing, did the OTA update to 4.3
After OTA and rebooting, got SuperSU update and put it on my N7
SuperSU thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
CWM / TWRP / MobileODIN installable ZIP: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
I went back in to the Toolkit:

In CWM, I flashed the installable SuperSU ZIP, rebooted, and got rooted.

Hi, joshag....
If your Nexus 7 is already rooted, you can use the apps, Flash Image GUI or Flashify to flash a Custom Recovery directly from the Nexus 7 itself.
Just install one of them (personally I prefer Flashify)... download the TWRP Recovery Image file appropriate to your particular Nexus 7 (links below)... and then use Flashify or Flash Image GUI... the on screen instructions are pretty self explanatory, just ensure you pick the FLASH RECOVERY option, and then navigate to the folder on your Nexus 7 where the TWRP recovery image downloaded to... (usually the /download folder).
So... no PC or fastboot required... just a rooted Nexus 7. (If you aren't already rooted, you're out of luck I'm afraid).
I use this method myself quite frequently, particularly when I can't be bothered booting up my laptop.

KitKat update fails repeatedly

I am stock rooted with 4.3.1 JLS36i with latest twrp recovery and ElementalX 1.8 kernel. I have tried OTA, which reboots into twrp where the install fails, adb sideload via twrp's advanced sideload, and install from device directly using zip file on device and twrp. All fail repeatedly with "fail" in a red font. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

[Q] Lose root and recovery on every boot. What gives?

I'm on stock 4.4.2. I can fastboot flash CWM and flash SuperSU in recovery. When I boot, SuperSU says there is no su binary. If I reboot into recovery, it's the stock recovery.
I tried CF-Auto-Root as well. That gave me root. Next reboot, I lost root, however (no su binary). Any ideas?
I'm thinking about restoring from a factory image and starting over, but I don't want to lose data.

Try twrp. Also It looks like you might just be booting recovery and not fishing it. Though that doesn't explain why you lose root. Wugfresh toolkit has something that makes recovery stick when you flash it. Try using that and maybe another recovery like twrp or philz touch( this is the one in using and it's solid and reliable)

Two Recoveries on Cyanogenmod 10, TWRP and CWM how do i get rid of one?

I recently installed CyanogenMod10 on my phone, and it came with CWM installed. I wanted to replace it with TWRP so I installed goomanager to do an openrecoveryscript. However when it came to rebooting it just launched CWM in recovery instead of TWRP. I installed CWM Rom manager and found that both CWM and TWRP are installed. How do i get rid of one?
I found a similar forum thread however it was with a GS3. I was thinking about using the Nexus4 toolkit but I don't think that is compatible with Cyanogenmod as it is bases its mods on stock builds.
Thanks
