I’ve been reading about Samsung/Sprint’s new Epic 4G smart phone and although the thing is technically impressive I’m a bit worried about the practicality of it. Its size is just as the name suggests, Epic. It’s WAY too big for your pocket, and even with the curved edges they introduced since the EVO there’s no way that having a brick in your pocket can be comfortable. Anyone disagree?
I always thought it would be too big. I came from a palm pre and didn't go to the evo because of it's size. After seeing the announcement of the epic, I had to have it. It is not too big but big enough...fits perfectly in my pocket. I am loving this phone more and more everyday. The curved edges make it not so intrusive in your pocket...it doesn't poke out. Try one out...you will like it.

I was concerned with this as well, I had an HTC Touch Pro, which was about 3/4" shorter width & height, but it was slightly taller. I don't use a holster, they look to cumbersome for me, and I was always hitting it with my arm, so I got into the habit of having one pocket for my phone, and the other for keys, etc. The first time I put the Epic into my pocket, it felt right. Yes, it was bigger around, but because it was shorter, it made a big difference. The rounded corners also help with this.
Like JoioSteez said, try one out. I went to Best Buy and asked if I could put one in my pocket. This was the final selling point.
Not too big at all. The rounded corners help the design a lot. It is a bit thicker than I would like but even with a hard case on it it's still comfortable in my pocket. Unless you're into wearing skintight pants you'll be fine.
I came from an HTC Touch xv6900.
Being able to hold the thing and put it in my pocket were big deal breakers for me not going to the HTC Evo 4G. A friend had it, and I did not like the feel of the device. It was bordering on Tablet territory (say what you will, the Dell Streak is a freakin tablet!). I'm the type of person that would put the Nexus One, Incredible, Desire, or iPhone4 as my ideal form factor.
The Epic is just as thick as my HTC xv6900, so that made the transition smoother. It's also only slightly wider, although a lot taller. I wear baggy jeans or tan slacks, so I find it fits wonderfully in my pocket. It helps that it's extremely light, lighter than the Evo. It probably wouldn't be comfortable if you wear new-age tight jeans. Normal non-baggy Levi's would probably work. If the device were any different (heavier, wider, thicker etc), it probably wouldn't work (I don't like the feel of the Touch Pro2, too thick), but Samsung definitely hit all the sweet spots on the design on this one. The biggest thing was making it light.
I put the Epic and Evo on top of each other at the store, the Epic is noticeably narrower (moreso than the 1/10" online quotes, I question that accuracy). I find this helps with comfort.
before I got my epic I've been reading reviews and preview on it's size and yada yada. but honestly its not that big "as in too big" really. the screen size and phone size seem to fit the phone well. to say it has a full qwerty keyboard also is empressive to me. having the phone in my pocket is also not that big of an issue. yea you feel it, but after a while you dont even notice it unless you actually think about it.

I thought that before I bought the phone as well. But I'm going to have to say, it hasn't bothered me one bit since I got it. I came from a Hero which used to twist in my pocket so it looked like I was walking around with a ***** all day. I had to keep adjusting it. I don't have that problem with this phone. Maybe it's the size or the rounded edges, but when I put the Epic in my pocket tall wise (portrait style) it stays there. I had a Droid for a while and because of it's sharp corners that thing stuck out like a brick my your pocket. I would say the Epic isn't obtrusive in a pocket unless you wear skinny jeans, or are a girl wearing tight pants (but then, any phone would be an issue to hide.

It's not *way* too big for pockets, in my experience, but it is just a hair below the top limit for me. I do wear fairly tight jeans, though. I'd second all the advice to try it, with a more cautious tone; pictures don't do the Epic justice at all, the curved shape helps a heck of a lot, but it is still big -- and has a butt.
My last phone was the Pixi, though, so perhaps I was just spoiled? Regardless, I'd third all the advice to try it, first.
I am coming from the Hero and I don't think its bad at all. I wear baggy jeans and shorts and have put it both in my front and yes REAR pocket...
At RadioSmack I put the Evo in my pocket and it was NOT comfortable at all. Those round edges on the Epic sold it for me.
Im south korea right now and got my hands on a Nexus S for about an hour or so.
The screen is Amazing. Better than my amoled N1. Battery life seems to last forever, i opened lots of cpu intensive apps and it barely moved for the hour i was playing with it. gingerbread is super smooth, but i didnt get a chance to see whats changed in he menus etc since the OS was Korean. I dont think it was the final release either since it was running 2.3, but it looked alot like basic froyo...none of the 3D stuff u see on youtube.
The case was plastic and super cheap compared to my nexus. I like the weight of the phone, but it just doesnt feel right in your hand because of the cheap glossy plastic.
I think im going to stick with my N1, overall its a better phone. There isnt a big enough leap for me to spend another 600$ on a phone, maybe next time with the N3.
The owner requested i dont take any pictures of it, but i just wanted to let you guys know what i think about the phone in the short amount of time i had with it
The plastic is an acquired thing. I feel like my Vibrant makes the Nexus one feel like shiz. Probably because I wasn't 'used' to the nexus one.
honestly i'll take plastic and gorilla glass over the nexus one anyday
you drop your nexus one without an invisible shield and a case and it's going to get destroyed, exactly what happened to a friends.
You drop a galaxy phone, made of plastic and gorilla glass, and it may get scratched up, not broken.
Honestly i hate the back because of the dots texture they put on it. when i pick up the invisible shield probably gonna make a custom back.

Your friend sounds quite unfortunate -- I've accidentally dropped my Nexus several times -- when landing on its front into a relatively smooth surface from around table height, there is no scratch. The one time I get some dents (on the teflon back/bottom) is when it felt on a cobblestone pavement.

I dropped my nexus one twice. Once on its face and got a minor scratch... once on its side which resulted in a major cracked screen.

3 foot drop from his hand onto tile in his house, landed on the side as th0r615 said, and the glass shattered, also damaging the screen and basically all around destroying the phone.
I've dropped my nexus many times, luckily almost never on the screen, and it has dings and scratches all over the sides and the back.
My friend, and my dad, now have a samsung captivate and vibrant respectably, and both have dropped them many times, my dad's dropped from a 5 foot height with no case onto the screen and didn't get a scratch.
Not saying that samsung phones look nicer, but they sure survive better.
I have nexus one and I can say the following:
Pros on NS:
4" next generation S-AMOLED screen
more internal storage for applications
front cam
Pros on nexus one:
trackball
memory card
top mounted earphones jack
If NS had 32GB of storage (probably 2GB for applications and 27GB for general storage), I'll get it for sure. Without memory card support, I have to think twice before buying it.
The best thing to do with the back is what I did with my vibrant....
Get 600 grit sandpaper and sand it so it feels like velvet....It takes the greasy feel off of it and it feels beautiful in the hand....
Trust me if anyone has a galaxy in here try it on the extra back they give you
Honestly? Who cares if it's plastic.
99.9% percent of you guys will cover this thing up with a gel case or invisible shield or something. I rather have that gorilla glass with a plastic body for light weight.

Guessing you put your phone in your pocket upside down then? And considering that the HTC Desire HD has one on the bottom, yet all the leather cases official and unofficial do not cater for it....... pretty annoying place to have it.

I think it makes more sense having it on the bottom. When you listen to music, you put your phone in your pocket - obviously headphone jack facing out of your pocket - and when you take it out, its just a simple press of a button to change songs.
If the jack's on the top, you'll have to pull out the phone, do a spin, then change your music. Somewhat annoying now, having the Galaxy S. Haha. No complains though.

I dropped my Vibrant getting out of my car on day one, with a rubber case, into the street and the screen shattered. Never dropped my N1, too heavy on my lap I can't forget it's there, lol. Though my sister is using the N1 right now (I'm using my G2) and she somehow broke the accelerometer.

Interesting, so it looks like the Nexus is quite vulnerable when it hits the ground on the side. I must have been quite lucky so far!
Hm, it makes the case for getting the NS more compelling.. argh
Nah .. it really depends on luck.. I dropped my nexus 4 times average height abt 4ft... dropped 3 times on rocky concrete floor .. battery and cover flew off too... once on a marble floor.. battery and cover scattered too.. It suffered some scratches and mini dents on the corner edges and trackball area...
I think I have a well built nexus .. I don't suffer from dust under screen problems as well.. I even turn on the fan to face my nexus when I am charging... no dust yet...

Exactly. Unless you are a fan of "naked-ness," who the hell cares. The Vibrant with a case feels like a solid phone. Not heavy at all also.
I use my Vibrant naked and love it. I tried out a G2 for a week then when I held my Vibrant I was like OMG THIS IS SOOOOO MUCH BETTER. G2 went right back regardless of the epic 10mbps I was getting.
Also I dropped it while walking (walked into a fire hydrant while using it) and it hit the hard cement. All that happened was the battery cover flew off, along with my battery and micro sd card (which i never found ;[). However the Vibrant had no issues after putting it back together. Just some scratches on the bezel.
I use the invisible shield from Zagg, so my Vibrant is virtually naked.

Good news and bad news
Good news: Just been into Carphone Warehouse. And discovered Talk Mobile do a tariff. 12 month, £30/month, 400 mins, texts and Unlimited data with no fair usage limit. Handset £179. That in my eyes is a cracking deal.
Bad news: Handset looks nice, but has the ergonomics of a shoe box. Does not feel nice in the hand at all. Compared to my HD2. I maybe use to how my fone feels, but the edges just felt too square.
Also i tested both phones on moneysavingexpert.com homepage. The colours were perfect on the SG2. HD2 colours looked washed out. But I was testing clarity of the small letters. Both were identical. Iphone 4 is the yardstick for this and it fails.
So im passing on this and waiting for the HTC Sensation. The look and feel is paramount, u cant touch memory, so shouldnt miss it too much.
SG2= ergonomic fail.
I want to view pages without having to zoom all the time and read pdfs. Nice phone but no cigar, this time

Having just upgraded from a HD2 yesterday I don't agree at all - the Galaxy S II feels a lot nicer in the hand. However, thanks to it's plastic construction, there is no doubt it feels less sturdy than HTC's offering. I get the impression that, despite the Gorilla Glass, one drop of this thing onto a hard surface would lead to a world of hurt. I'm not saying that is definitely the case but it feels that way.
I have a FlexiShield skin on order and I will feel a lot more comfortable once my phone is in it. I bought one for my HD2 18 months ago when I first got it and it saved it from at least a couple of drops. Superb cover.
On a side note, is anyone going to bother with a screen protector? I have never had a Gorilla Glass phone before so don't know the likelihood of it scratching. I much prefer touch-screen phones with no protector but for obvious reasons it's not a good idea.
lots of people aren't bothering with ascreen protector. they bring a good point that... anything that can scratch the gorilla glass will probably pass through any screen protector anyway. having said that... i'm getting one. i have one for my GS as well.
as for the GS II i just may not put it on yet
I like the shape of the sgs 2, very thin and light makes it ideal shape.
Yeah, we really needed to know this. Nobody is forcing you to buy anyone phone so if you don't like this one there is no need to run home, jump on the interwebz and make a thread on the forum about it.
I hope you like which ever phone you do get.

Dropped my SGS multiple times on hard flooring, concrete and Asphalt and despite thinking one drop and it was a goner the thing doesn't have a scratch on the screen, body still looks new and works perfectly. I wonder if the SGS II is the same way but I will not be dropping it anytime soon to find out.
I love my Galaxy SII but it seems that you might be better off with a 7in tablet such as the Galaxy Tab or maybe a bigger tablet such as the Advent Vega or iPad.
I personally couldn't read PDFs on a screen smaller than 7in for very long.
This is good info for me. Nexus One owner and I sported an HD2 for a few weeks and loved the feel and size, knowing it had the dimensions of my next phone (G2x was a failure for me).

yeh I know what your on about I went from iPhone 4 to gs2 and text is so hard to read with no reflow option, but I gain so much more with customization, and the weight is great, the iPhone feels like such a brick now.
in saying that I had a hd2 and really missed it after I got the iPhone, thought I could get that feeling back with the sgs2 but it's not the same hd2 is a quality product.
enjoy your sensation and thanks for being honest in the lions den lol
i do agree with the [OP] regarding the "ergonomic fail" thing.
..and this is coming from a Samsung phone fanatic like me
personally, i don't like at all the shell design of the SGS2, i'll definitely not use the SGS2 naked, it looks simply disgusting... seriously, for the lack of a better word to describe its design.
unfortunately i love all the technology packed inside that "disgusting" shell so is either take it or leave it, and i choose to take it
so the ergonomic fail became a non issue for me, as i'll be replacing the case, and using with a protection case, and other accessories i always slap onto all of my phones; i praise the after market accessories people to make the impossible possible

Disgusting? Seriously? Dear me, it takes all sorts I guess and the world would be a boring place if we all had the same opinions.
IMO: I like very much the design, I can hold it in one hand and even type with one hand, it holds perfectly in my right hand... Even ergonomically I like it. It's simply perfect for me.
It's up to you to choose another phone. I would never choose another now. Especially HTC sensation which have many things less than Galaxy S2.
+10 I find the design very nice unlike some here
And I would never change it for nothing on the market that's just a piece of beauty, a very thin piece actually
What I don't understand is the point of this topic ? If you feel it not as you want anyone else could feel it in the hand differently like me. And many peeps have already said they like the feel in the hand in this thread so your opinion can't be taken for facts until someone interested in it hold it for real :/ anyway...
Pitching in on the ergonomics of the device being awesome, for me anyway. If you have really small hands then this will probably be a pretty bad phone for you, since it wont fit comfortably into a normal grip. That aside, for people with average or large hands, this design works very well. You can keep a very firm grip on it easily, and one handed operation works too, all while having a 4.3" screen.
Not sure about the people saying it feels cheap or anything, unless you correlate cheap with light - because it's very light. If this is the case, you can buy a nice big heavy cover for the device to make it feel heavier and sturdier - but that seems really stupid to me. A phone is meant to be mobile, the lighter the better.
Phones won't be perfect until they're razor thin, bendable, and weight as much as paper! And the SGS2 is firmly on the right track.
To me I'm loving everything about the phone, ergonomics included. I don't have huge hands but find the phone very easy to hold and use for one handed operation.
As for a screen protector I will say a big NO. I work for a Verizon retailer and we have a demo line hooked up to their version of the first galaxy s, the fascinate, that also has gorilla glass. Being inquisitive and it being a demo line, I decided to test the durability of gorilla glass. Grabbed a phillips head screw driver and preceded to try and scratch the screen. Repeatedly I scraped it, scratched back and forth quickly, and somewhat violently tried to stab it. Wiped off the screen with a micro-fiber cloth and not one scratch or mark on it, gorilla glass is really some remarkable stuff.
I'm not saying its impossible to damage it, but it will take some serious effort. Since most of you guys probably take care of your phones anyway, with gorilla glass your screen will be fine. A screen protector on gorilla glass just seems redundant .
Problem is... the old galaxy didn't have an oleophobic coating. You try taking a screwdriver to that and the coating WILL come off. The screen will be resilient, but not the coating, sorry.

Hi,
I'm on the hunt for a rugged case for my Nexus 4. I have only two requirements. It needs to be rugged. And the back needs to be really grippy. The Seidio Convert case I ordered may be rugged enough to stop a train, but it also falls out of my hand at a very shallow angle because the back isn't grippy. It sort of baffles me - if the case is supposed to be rugged, you'd think preventing falls by making it so grippy it wouldn't leave your hand would be a priority. Even the rubber underneath the plastic back-clip is not very grippy. The Otterbox defender for my Galaxy Nexus was a perfect example of this done the right way.
Do such cases exist for the Nexus 4? Is there a good grippy substance I could put across the back of my seidio convert? I don't care that much how it looks, I just want it to not leave my hand.
Thanks!

I don't use it anymore as it is very grippy and is hard for me pull out of my pockets. I will use it again in camping/hiking/traveling situations.
maybe this will help http://www.amazon.com/KaysCase-Armo...d=1363105718&sr=1-1&keywords=kayscase+nexus+4

Thanks for the suggestions! Nexibot hgigh, those cases would be perfect except for the plastic right down the middle which I assume is a kick stand. I usually place my fingers right along the middle, particularly when I do a one-handed reach to the top corner of my phone for a notification pull-down.
mackster248, I like the idea of the gel grips, but I really need the entire back to be one giant grippy surface or i find the phone flying out of my hand far more than I like.
This obsession with grip may seem a bit odd, but if you work around water, making sure the phone never leaves your hand is probably more important than impact protection.
Thanks again, I'd welcome more suggestions if people have them!

Please, no "that's what she said" jokes. Rate this thread to express how you think the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip feels in-hand. A higher rating indicates that it's comfortable to hold for long periods of time, even in one hand. Resist the urge to say "TWSS" just now. Seriously.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Considering the unusual form factor of this device, it's very well balanced. It's a tall boi with a slightly strange 2636 x 1080 resolution (21.9:9 aspect ratio) but you quickly get used to it and most apps actually make a lot of sense being tall.
The battery is actually batteries, being split between the top and bottom sections. This means the weight is natural and balanced so single handed use is perfectly possible, especially if you use Samsung's single handed mode.
I would like to preface this by saying that this comes from the perspective of someone with little tiny baby hands. With that out of the way, I can safely say that the feel of the phone in hand is excellent. The metal and glass construction makes the phone feel robust, though the phone is a bit on the slippery side. Every time I've used it, I felt as though the Flip would be better with a textured satin or some matte glass finish, which is why I ordered a Dbrand skin for the phone. The most surprising thing about the phone's ergonomics was how easy it was to access all of the buttons. Even with my tiny hands, reaching all the buttons or performing fingerprint scanner gestures—which makes the ergonomics of the phone even better imo—was a breeze, and so was flipping it open and closed with one hand. What really makes using the phone for hours on end comfortable, though, is the fact that the top and bottom are separated by a hinge, which makes the phone feel cool even during load (though maybe I'm just being extra about that, idk).
For day-to-day use, the 21.9:9 display ratio wasn't that hard to adjust to, but I did have to make some significant hand adjustment to reach the top corners of the device. The one-handed mode does help with that, though.
TL;DR:
This phone feels great in the hand, but they should make it less slippery next time.
On the topic of in-hand feel, the slippery case it came with came loose like a bar of soap and broke my screen. Already had to pay a deductible to replace my device. Definitely get a grippier case. Also, I had to go with a tall keyboard because of the aspect ratio of the phone. Otherwise, I honestly love it, just so bummed about the case and already needing a replacement phone.
Necroing this as i got my flip about two weeks ago.
Im a tall guy, around 6.6ft /2m with fairly large hands.
With mine phone came jet black rubbery case free of charge with sellers note "never take it out of the case."
It was a nice gesture, but i thought "theres no chance its THAT bad."
Few hours that i used the phone without the case was funny, like possessed bar of soap. Its super slippery, it literally slipped out of my hands and straight on my bed two times and phone is "moving" (sliding) constantly, even if theres smallest unbalanced surface even on clothy surfaces.
So, with this phone a good rubbery case is a MUST if you want your phone to last.
Metal, chunky bezels make phone look more premium that usual, but also gives false illusion of security, which is actually not there.
Display is nice, comming from iPhone i think is brighter and has better color quality, tho this is subjective.
Display is also squishy, mine already has small dent in where my keyboard is from typing.
I was unfortunate enough that my came with protective screen being damaged, it glued off and fold in a opposite way from the folding which made a air bubble underneath it and i had to remove it.
Squisiness of the display and its clam form factor gives a bit more security for the display since, by now, on normal phone i would already have small display scratches from everyday use and putting in/pulling out phone in pocket.
Also, be aware at all times where you phone is! Despite being on heavier side, folded phone in its quite small, i know few people who lost track/forgot where they phone is and sit on it few times which resultet in pricey repair, changing their display.
Its also well balanced, bigger battery is in lower body so phone has nice balance to it, if you ask me maybe even better than usual chocolate bar.
Its a bit heavier than iphoneX so longer usage can put a bit of strain on your hands.
Overall, i love the phone but im dreading the the day when/if i have tho change display.
This is one of those phones which you either love or dont understand why people love it, i pretty much told my seller "this is stupidest decision ever and probably a dead investment, i wont be able to resell it and buy a new phone later on, but i love it, remings me the time of when i was younger and i have to have it."
