Few downsides of the default rom - Moto G General

I like the device like. It's cheap, good battery and it's fast enough for what I need. But there are 3 things which I thought where stock android. The nexus 7 has these features.
control mp3 player by headset buttons
Switches don't include rotate or GPS
Swype like keyboard
Does anybody how to fix these? If I'm correct CM also has these. A CM based rom on my HTC one S also had these functions.
Too bad CM isn't available (yet?) on the moto G

I solved the second one by installing Power Toggles, it lets you create and customize switches in the notification bar, and they look nice =)

3. Google Keyboard has swipe feature, if that's what you mean.

You probably mean it's "not available in your location" (yes, Google Keyboard isn't available in all countries), as it is written when you click the button for "not compatible". In that case you just have to find the .apk (yes, you can find stuff on the Internet that is not officially available) and install it manually. Works flawlessly.

to save him searching for a solution. If you get a parsing error trying to install the apk. Check you have 'allow unknown sources' checked in security. Then upload the apk to google drive, then install it from google drive and it will install without issue. There are other solutions if you don't have google drive, but this is the most simple.

Hee everybody,
thanx for the suggestions. I did install the keyboard and power toggles.
For some reason the keyboard isn't available in the Netherlands.
Still hoping for CyanogenMod

We have cm...the Moto x...it's not very popular. Lol
You lose the Motorola features, more of a big deal for the x I guess....And people seem to love stock with xposed for customization and added features.
Cm doesn't really offer anything that you can't get with xposed.
Plus you get those inevitable custom Rom glitches....where stock is flawless.
Custom roms are definitely more important for phones with their own ui...like HTC, Samsung....And for phones that aren't getting updates anymore.
Just saying.

Well, i unzipped the apk, and tried looking for an obvious way of changing the resolution of the keyboard (Which im assuming is the problem), but none of the files contain any info of the sort. So im guessing that the "porter" would have to go into every file, and basically recompile the whole thing for the lower res. But im no dev, so i could be wrong!

it works great, i have been using it since yesterday.
It's very accurate too, i haven't had problems like hitting the wrong letters.
Edit: after further investigation, it seems it is not multitouch, however, I'm not sure of the benefits of this already sleek keyboard would gain through multitouch.
Not sure what you mean multitouch works fine for me. You can hit shift and still type letters in capital without issue. Using this and keeping swype around too as it works great.

Google Keyboard update

So I was so tired of not being able to long-press the upper row of the keyboard to input numbers, so I remember reading somewhere that Google had updated the keyboard with this feature for tablets, to my surprise, Play Store didn't notice any update, so I tried installing it from the play store website like I do pretty much always, and I got the update pushed to my phone.
I attach the link to the playstore here, even if it says INSTALLED, click on it and you will get the option to install it on the devices linked to your account.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.inputmethod.latin
My keyboard gets the numbers on the top row now. Thanks!
Shame I paid for SwiftKey 1 week prior to get that feature.

Different strokes for different folks. I prefer SwiftKey's functionality, but there's something about "stock" that's always appealing for me.
Thanks for letting us know. I'm a bit confused why keep this update hidden and not notify the users like a normal app would do, That's weird !

Did that and it didn't work. Ah well, as I said no big matter as I am using Swype anyway.
Guys, I've installed the last version from play store.
I have a problem that it seems to exist only on my (actually my wife's) N7II. I don't have it on other "regular" android phones...
When I press a key, I don't get that blue pop-up with the key pressed, if u know what I mean...
Does anyone get the key pressed on the blue pop-up ?!?
I searched on settings, but I haven't found nothing related to this...
Is this a bug or does it work like this on tablets (or at least on N7) ? Can also be a 4.3 bug??
Best keyboard setup with google keyboard is advanced setting, custom input styles, english (us) (pc). Gives you a pc keyboard layout. Numbers on top and symbols like your familiar qwerty pc board. Keys get small on portrait but thats what swyping is for.

What do you mean, "blue pop-up"? Letters don't "pop up" on the stock Android keyboard unless you hold down the key to select, say, a number or symbol.

But on my Samsung S3, Desire HD, Huwaei X5 (and so on...) it shows the contrary ...when I touch (or hold down, it's indifferent) a key on those devices I get that blue popup
Oh, and now I went to the keyboard settings and there is an option for that: "Popup on Keypress"
If I disable it, it wont show that popup as natural.
On N7 I can't remember quite if it's there and if it's enabled or not... only at night when I came back home...
Maybe this is a phone feature, maybe it's a nexus bug, a 4.3 bug... who knows...

None of those other phones ship with the stock Android keyboard- the S3 in particular uses Samsung's keyboard app, the Desire HD uses HTC's, the X5 Huawei's own app, etc. This is the stock keyboard app that is on Nexus devices: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.inputmethod.latin&hl=en
Edit- I've had a check, on tablets it doesn't do the pop-up because the keyboard is big enough for you to see the letters. Swiftkey does, I think. Try Swiftkey!

4.4.2 update has been out for a while, what are everyone's thoughts

Hi All,
Now that the KK update is out and installed on all RAZR HDs except for those that are pokey, I thought I'd see what everyone's opinions are.
Try to be a little more informative than "it's good", "I like it", or "it sucks", "I want a different phone". I figured this would be a good place to post up new tricks you've discovered, maybe weren't aware of before actually installing the new OS, and maybe help others discover and maximize the capabilities of the phone now.
DO NOT POST ANYTHING IN THIS THREAD RELATED TO "WHEN IS THE NEW ROOT METHOD COMING"!!!! There are enough threads getting spammed with that nonsense.
I'll go first I guess:
- Liking the extra RAM that has been freed up with the update. About 30-40 additional MB, which in my case with everything I am running every little bit helps!
- Liking that I am now able to take advantage of the KK Xposed modules.
- Thankful that @iBolski pointed me to the new way to hack the wireless hotspot.
- I was toying with the Daydream option in settings, but couldn't get it to work correctly I don't think.
- Definitely enjoying having a 2-yr old phone that is software relevant again. Having unlimited data on VeeZeeDub I like being able to put off outright buying a phone again like I did this one.
- Liking the fact that lockscreen widgets can be posted on the lockscreen, and that a simple swype down from the clock (while using pattern lock method) moves the pattern lock to the bottom and allows the ability to view the widgets without unlocking the phone. Also like that camera is one of the widgets - much easier to get to in a pinch!
- Liking the fact that with Gravity Box [KK] I can use the frosted lockscreen image setting. Have been wanting that for a while.
- Also liking that when music is playing on the phone, the lockscreen image is changed to a picture of the album cover art (not sure if this is a mod I set up in XBlast Tools or in Gravity Box [KK] or something that is standard on the KK OS, but liking it regardless)
...more to come I'm sure!
I love it since I have root.
Things I love:
-Quicker to launch applications
-No lag, or hold ups
-The new pull down menu is a lot better.
-The lock screen and the ability to to take a picture while locked is very nice.
-Battery life seems to be better.
Things I hate:
-Swype is not included and now I have to pay $3.99
Overall, great update!
I concur with Modernmidnights assessment with the exception of Swype. I haven't used it since I purchased Swiftkey. Like that so much better.
My con was the popping noise, but that's fixed now with the fix that @kabaldan gave us. You can get that here:
http://d-h.st/vre
Otherwise, great performance. Lag is gone. Heck, I hate to say it, but I'm getting better performance out of stock than I did with Nexesque ROM and that ROM was great under JB.
Very happy with this release.
is it possible to have google now on this device?
i mean that thing that u say "ok google now" and the phones wakes up and talks to you?
or it is not possible since the hardware is not compatible?

I'm also using Swiftkey, started before Swype was a feature for the AOSP keyboard (at least I think so, else I didn't know how to enable it while looking for it). I have already even deleted the stock keyboard, lol. Come to think of it I remember when Swiftkey added Swype. Was a test of sorts, then it disappeared for about a week, I was so mad I sent a nastygram to them to which they responded that it'll be coming in an update and that it was just a beta test.
Popping noise... mind elaborating slightly? I'm wondering if it's the same popping noise I am getting with autovoice enabled for listening...

Rather than rehash it all, here is a link to a thread I started over in the Q&A forum about it and @kabaldan provided a newly compiled boot image that fixes it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2761162
It seems to affect some, but not all phones, whether the bootloader is locked or unlocked.
My apologies for making you respond, I should have looked harder. Your topic describing the issue was almost right below this thread. I don't think that's what my issue is.
I've noticed many problems with the stock messaging app and with hangouts as well, so many I deleted them both and switched to Go SMS pro.
Sigh, hearing there is another update from Motorola on the way makes me sad, I've customized the phone so much since the update I don't want to go back to stock and do it all over again.

The latest motorola phone can do that because they have a dedicated , very low power processor for it , if we did this on our phone , it would ruin the battery life.
the closest you ca, achieve , is with nova launcher, you can program it to respond to "ok google" when you are on the main screen.

Google Now is already on the phone. Now, if you want it to launch from the launcher, then at this point, no. The Google Now Launcher is not available for this phone (yet).
However, as another poster stated, you can get the latest Nova Launcher and it has the ability to respond to "Ok Google" from the desktop.
Or, if one is rooted, use the Xposed module OK Google For Third Party Launchers and enable everything (all apps, EVERYTHING) within. Now I can use "OK Google" to launch Google Now from any application or screen (except for the lockscreen... still working on that one...)
Took about 5 minutes to go through all 150+ apps to enable them all, but worth it.
Another question for all:
Has anyone tried using the Moto Skip yet after upgrading to 4.4.2? I found the apk online (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/moto-skip-apk-t2416837 check post #4)
It installed just fine and ran when entered from settings --> security, but I haven't actually tested it yet since I don't have any NFC tags on hand. Might see if I can pick up NFC tags to see if it works.
Little by little, changing this phone into a "Moto X Mini" lol. Let's call it Moto X Dragon, it sounds cooler 8) lol

Google Keyboard has a swype alternative that's free
Please excuse my lateness lol
I think personally, the OS is a lot snappier but there are a lot of bugs that are still present in the final release thought, I haven't had the popping noise sound but I have encountered soft reboots when I boot the phone with headphones in, it does lag a little sometimes but that's due to lack or ram. I love wireless printing, and read receipts. Would love art runtime if more apps were compatible with it. I'm just glad to have it. Having an locked bootloader isn't that great, the first Razr Maxx HD I had was and that was lovely, but I digress. Daydream is kind of useless to me. I am a battery converservationists. The multiple home launcher selector was well worth the wait. I can run Nova Launcher or the Google Now Launcher whenever I want to. Another drawback is that I can't write anything to the SD card unless it's with a system app now. Battery life is decent, I get a full day of heavy usage everyday. Which is the reason I purchased the phone, battery life. After a few days of running KitKat the random battery drain stopped for me.
i'm now on JB rooted, and i've change my font to playful. If i update to kitkat, will i lost my font? coz i realy love the font :crying:

Touchless Control on the Moto G.

Here's a new feature on the Moto G, which works like Touchless control. Google added this on all Android devices.
How to activate:
1) Open the Google Now app
2) Tap the mic. and say "Okay Google everywhere"
3) Now go to the menu button (3 dots at the bottom) and tap it.
4) Go to "Voice"
5) You'll see "Okay Google Detection".
6) Check the first 2
7) Done!
Now, on any screen, say "Ok Google". It also works when screen is off, but only while charging.

Maybe not what you want, but if you flash the US XT1032 firmware it will work. Eventually it should be available everywhere in the world.
Thanks
Its new to me thank you, f*ck all the haters.
New to me too, but not at all working on XT1033
Great post, thank you!

Works from the lock screen as long as the phone is charging. Google removed a lot of functionality over the last 3 months. Voice control was removed from Google Music Player but still works on Nexus devices.

Thank you OP! Some of us are new to Android and appreciate the tip
Another tip for enabling this feature: (**Root Required**)
Firstly install UnleashTheGoogle.apk.
Once installed, grant it root permissions, and kill the Google Search app in the settings (Force close). Then you should see some options in the Google Now settings. The IDs to change in the "Config Flags" menu are 199 and 202. Change them to ON. Also, check that the 223 is ON too.

Life Without Root

First, I've only had this phone for about a week and I love it So far everything just works. I'm coming from The Incredible, Rezound, Gs3, GS4. I'm not saying I don't miss root because I do. I miss Tasker, Xsposed, Wifi Hotspot Xposed Module, root explorer and safestrap (for the times I want to play with a rom).
Life without root 
Tasker Sub - Smart Connect - I found a sweet little app called "Smart Connect" in the Google Play Store . https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sonyericsson.extras.liveware&hl=en - Previously I would use takser to for certain conditions - example I would have tasker launch waze when I'm attached to my car Bluetooth. Smart connect does this along with many more option just like tasker.
Wifi Hotspot - I have unlimited data so the hotspot doesn't work for me - I searched and searched and can't find anything but PDA connect that works with USB tether - This is probably the main reason I miss root, especially on vacation with the family. IF ANYONE FINDS A BETTER WORK AROUND PLEASE POST! THANKS
Root explorer - It still works but without root you can't write to existing files. I always like the cloud storage tabs feature, you can add dropbox and other services as a tab and it all still works. Copy and paste still work. I use this a lot for Moto 360 watch faces. I download them to dropbox and then use Root explorer to move them to a folder that Watchface and Facer can use. Works Great!
Please list other work arounds here, I like to see what everyone else is doing.
Thanks
Hopefully this thread will be temporary!!
Have a great day!
You can replace stock equalizer with this one without root.
Bass boost and surround effects don't seem to work but everything else does and it works over Bluetooth audio.

Hello,
notification widget without root, workin for me!

This app recommended by @LordBass is working great to add percentage to the battery icon on the notification drawer.

I hear a lot of people talking about WiFi Hotspot not working, and I ignore it. I'm wondering whether it works fine for me because I'm in the UK on a different carrier?

I'd avoid this app. It doesn't consistently work. Most times I was having to FC and restart the app to get any of the settings to actually work. It would work for a day and then I'd have to start the process all over again. Their customer support sucks too since It has been over 2 months since I sent them an email and no response.

What phone?
I don't have those issues (Moto Maxx on lollipop).
For me, surround and bass options do nothing, but everything else works.
Not the greatest eq, but for people without root that want to use something else than
stock audiofx might be helpful.

I'm on the Turbo. I can change to any EQ setting or try my own and nothing changes until I FC and restart the app. Then it will work for a bit until I go to change something again.
