I hope it is OK to start such a general thread and that this is the correct sub forum for it.
I am an owner of a 2012 Nexus 7 who also purchased the 2013 Nexus 7. While there are many improvements in the new 2013 nexus 7 (speed, display, etc.) there seem to also be frustrating problems that a number of users (including myself) have all encountered with no satisfactory solution resulting in much wasted time. I thought it would be useful to put them together in one thread and see what they may possibly have in common.
1. Usb connection to a pc. The device is not recognized to permit usb file transfers. Many potential solutions have been suggested (mtp/ptp off/on, usb debugging off/on, etc.) but these have not worked for me and many others.
(Potential work around: flash stick and stickmount work for me for file transfers. Another slower method is wifi transfer using ES Explorer, or email attachments).
2. Adb device is not recognized when using WugFresh toolkit. Faulty drivers, user error, etc have been blamed. I've tried them all with no benefit. Still can't get the Nexus recognized despite numerous attempts and methods.
(I'm no expert but I suspect the problem is probably related to #1. The pc cannot detect the adb device in those cases because it cannot detect the Nexus in the first place).
3. GPS problems. Supposedly helped (or worsened) by latest update. Don't know because I don't use GPS much and have not installed the latest OTA update, afraid it will mess up my root and I won't be able to get WugFresh to detect the Nexus again. (Took me days of attempts the first time).
There are probably other problems but the above are the most common ones.
If the moderators agree, I think this thread might be useful.
Just the tip of the iceberg.
With the exception of your #3, most users won't see the issues that you've listed.

You are correct. I did not want to overload the list.
I too have had the random freezes and occasional reboots.
I have something to add here. I keep my nexus 7.2 (2013) in a moko case and often use it with the case folded back all the way. When the freezes occur, I noticed that if I move the case cover slightly away, the freeze stops, and when I bring it back, it freezes again. So, in my opinion, the freezing is magnet related. If so, a weaker magnet or more back padding might help with that. I've had no freezing when I use the Nexus out of the case. Have not yet tried additional shielding.
Try a different USB cable / port.
And toolkits are lame. Use fastboot.
#1 and #2 have to do with older drivers confusing your installation. If you work on it, almost everyone that has posted has eventually gotten both to work.
#3 GPS issue is fixed. There's an update you can use to just get the GPS fix and nothing else, no OS upgrade, no loss of data, etc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2421373
beware of the "the problems only represent a small vocal group blah blah" posts you'll get. I ended up returning mine to best buy for good today. I couldn't find myself dealing with and trying to replace this unit x amount of times to get a properly working one. Back to the drawing board I go.
I don't think any other device in the history of Android devices I've owned has a more 'vocal' group of problems in the General/A&A forums. It's ridiculous how bad the quality control for this tablet is.
I experienced #1 with my original N7.
And that was USB driver issue. I fixed it by, really, removing all kind of drivers that are on my pc (Win7 64).
I remember uninstall all the drivers as well from the device manager, right click uninstall.
I tried removing drivers from WugFresh and it did not work.
Then #2, I managed to use the PDAnet driver.
Now, it's working for both MTP and ADB

Used a different cable, different pc, different port. No difference.
I would use fastboot but am a newbie and it is over my head to do that. Afraid I'll really mess things up.

#1 I believe the Nexus connected fine before I used WugFresh which made me uninstall a bunch of drivers. I now think maybe I uninstalled some essential driver but have no way to restore things because the restores don't go back far enough.

I've been working on it for several days now. Hours and hours of wasted frustrating time. Tried everything suggested (which may be part of the problem). Need someone to talk me through it once. There really should be a direct download of the necessary windows 7 drivers I could just download and install on the pc and solve the problem.
#3 I'm rooted with stock rom. I don't use GPS much so that is not a major problem.
The major problem is that though I'm rooted I can't do a Nandroid backup and without it it's scary for a newbie to do anything that could mess things even further. Took me days to get WugFresh's adb recognized and finally root in a few minutes after that.

Hmm you could download the goomanager app and then install TWRP, by then you can do a nandroid backup without any hassle.

You can install the PDAnet driver from WugFresh. It's option no. 3 if I am not mistaken.

Update : SUCCESS!!
It was the cable stupid!
I can't believe the hours I wasted because of this stupid cable. This must be the cable I had used when I finally successfully rooted the Nexus after multiple tries (including different cables, etc). I own several USB cables and in my hours and days of trying to get this to work I went through them all at one time or another.
I now labeled this cable as the one to use for connecting between the Nexus and the PC. It is hard to believe that a cable could make that much difference! I was of course aware that the cable could be a problem but this much of a problem?! Unbelievable. What could be so different with this Asus cable? What could be missing in the other cables?
For the record this is the cable that came with the original Nexus 7 charger. Now I have it labeled to avoid going through all this again.
I'm one happy camper! You guys have no idea how frustrating it is to follow every ones advice and still have no success. You start to feel really stupid.
Thank you all for your wonderful and patient support. You guys (and gals) are great. Sorry to have wasted your time too.
Hi Guys,
I bought a Nexus 4 on Ebay. The listing said the phone was stuck in "download mode" and the guy couldn't fix it. I bought it cheap, received it, and used a thread here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2347060) to get it up and running. The phone is now booting and working well enough.
Unfortunately there are 2 problems that seem to persist.
1) Rotation doesn't work at all. The sensor reports no data back when I use various testing applications. I know that the phone has some issues if you mix radios between versions. I assure you that I've tried various combinations, including the correct ones, to no avail. I also have checked the "auto rotate" settings in the normal menus and they are turned on. Also, in looking into the rotation issues I found that the other sensors (light, proximity, gravity, etc...) are not functioning.
2) When I install the 4.3 OTA rom the system hangs. Based on some troubleshooting it appears to be the .84 radio that's causing the system to fail to boot, though I haven't gotten the 4.3 rom to boot at all.
I've run a logcat and there are error messages that seem to report problems with the sensors. I googled for them and found them in other logcats where people did not report the problems that I'm having. I'd be happy to post a logcat if it would help.
I believe that this is a software issue, but it is possible that it is hardware. I just get the feeling that it is software.
Can anybody contribute or point me in a direction for more information.

(Sorry, I have this issue posted as a similar question in another thread and thought this response was there. My bad. That's why the reference to the other post. It isn't really that big a deal though...)
I have. In fact, from the post just before mine I tried flashing the "newer" image. I also made an (unsuccessful) attempt to use the LG flash tool mentioned in that post. I was hoping that using a DLL that was specifically for the N4 might yield better results. I couldn't make it work though and eventually gave up.
I'm drawn towards the idea that there is initialization, configuration, or driver issues that are causing this problem. I wonder if, like the bluetooth and wifi MAC issue, there is a similar bit of config magic that must be done for the sensors as well. With that said though, if that were the case, I'd expect there to be somebody else out there who is having the same problem. Given the unknown history of the phone too, it is entirely possible that the hardware is bad.
I'm open to suggestions and certainly willing to post a logcat or whatever may help.

Thanks Joe! And a question.
First off, I want to thank Joe for all his hard work! Ever since I upgraded from the S3 to the S4 I have been missing CM for their lack of bloatware more than anything else. Found this just over a week ago, installed it and haven't looked back at TouchWiz ever since!!! Everything works great but I have a small issue I am hoping someone can help me with, I have tried using GravityBox and a separate Xposed module to have a different picture on the lock screen but all I ever get is a black background. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them. Thanks again Joe for all your hard work and I am sad to hear you will be moving on. Was hoping to see some of that Lollipop goodness but I understand that hobbies can only take so much of your time. Good luck with your S5 work!

Which rom are you using right now? I heard there's an issue with GB while on the gpe version. You might have to do a nandroid backup and try out pure nexus as others users reported GB working with no issue for them. And sometimes after applied a tweak, you must restart your phone to take affect.

How to Pure Nexus on SGH-1337M
Hello,
I have the SGH-I337M with bootloader I337MUMUAMDJ and with TWRP recovery, I'd like to install this Pure Nexus but I don't know what to chose when it comes to the modules.
Has anyone installed this or can anyone provide me some advice?
Thanks,
OMG I am LOVING the Pure Nexus rom on my S4!!!!! I just want to say that this was my first Android experience and was going to be my last until I stumbled upon xdadevelopers and this ROM a few days ago. I originally switched from an iPhone (which was hard enough) but when I got my brand new S4 I couldn't believe how slow and laggy it was, thanks to ATT apps and touchwiz, my phone with all these great specs could barely keep up with MMS messages and was lagging just scrolling thru my contact list!!??! :/
So anyways, I was ready to move back to the Apple side of the world before I decided to give this ROM a try and after installing the Pure Nexus rom all i can say is... WOW!!! I think i'm finally falling in love with this device 1.5 years later. This is exactly how the S4 should be stock from all carriers!! Pure, clean, fast and functional!! very impressed! Awesome work Joe!!

I believe I was in the wrong forums, I found GOOGLE EDITION 4.4.4 by Danvdh, Kryten2k35 & Ktoonsez and I believe it is meant for SGH-I337M so I'll give it a try.
Also, I did have one question, is there any work around yet for being able to connect this to a PC via USB and being able to transfer files? Again, I'm on ATT NC1 using the Pure Nexus Rom.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

No. Look into airdroid or the app in the OP. There will be no work around unless our bootloader gets unlocked, from what I understand it's a kernel problem and there's no real way to fix it without flashing a kernel

Thanks!

Wifi difficulties on Google Play Edition ROMs for I337UCUFNI1
Hello, I followed the instructions for the SafeStrap installation of various Google Play Edition ROMs on my Samsung Galaxy S4, NI1 found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53758259#post53758259
I successfully booted into working installations for all of them (Pure Nexus Edition, Google Edition for SafeStrap v1.1, & S4 Google Edition for SafeStrap. The phone could receive 4G LTE, but could not turn on Wifi. It became stuck on "Turning Wifi on..." & never progressed elsewhere. I performed all manner & combinations of hot reboots & full reboots, with no luck.
I also tried flashing different ATT modules.zip from NB1 & NC1, none of which changed anything.
In http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/development/rom-google-edition-s4-t2837239/post55466895#post55466895
I also saw that in addition to hot/soft reboots, trying go enter/exit airplane mode may also get wifi back up again. This too failed. I'm utterly confused how hot reboots & this airplane mode fix worked for so many others.
Anyone else had luck with fixing wifi?
Requesting advice/help. I just flashed this rom and have experienced two data drops already within 30 minutes of me using the rom. What should I do to fix this?
also...just tried to install chrome from the play store. When I open chrome my phone immediately vibrates 3 times very quickly, and says "unfortunately chrome has stopped". Ive tried clearing cache/data and uninstalling, neither worked. Did I forget to do something when I flashed this rom? other weird stuff has been happening like I rebooted my phone one time and the wifi wouldn't even turn on and I had to reboot again to get it working.
Every time you cold boot, you need to do a hot reboot to get wifi working.

Hi, Okay so I am having a problem with the Nexus 4 microphone. It's not working for the following;
Calls
Voice Search
Video capture
Pretty much everything a mic is used for really...
The problem started persisting I believe back in 4.3 or possibly just after the 4.4 update, not entirely clear.
I have found a rather irritating fix for the problem, it's a silly fix but it's a fix nonetheless....as strange as it is if I plug in the usb data cable the mic works. Strange yes? If I plug in the usb cable and then unplug it the mic works for a little bit and then goes dead again. Even stranger yes?
Since the problem has occurred I have I have been running customs ROMS and Kernels, predominantly for the 4.4.4 update and nothing really less. The problem is still persistent, hasn't gotten worse in anyway...just persistent. Keep in mind I hadn't put anything custom on my phone until after the problem occurred.
So obviously this states that I have done factory resets, formats, flashes etc...
Currently running the latest Dirty Unicorn ROM with the PAGAAPS.
I have read a lot on the google product forums and some other threads around the place with others having practically the same issues. There is a lot of varying conclusions between it being a hardware or software issue with no real resolution though. Some have dissembled their phone and changed the mic and what ever other hardware they found necessary to change or try and fix....to also find that it hasn't fixed their problem.
Here is a link to one thread with everyone having the same issue, everything on there I have tried apart from doing open surgery on my phone.
Nexus 4 microphone not working Google product forum
So if this is a software issue for some phones, the problem could be solved in the upcoming update to Lollipop 5.0 which could be potentially awesome for me.
....if no resolutions happens from that, well then I'm stuck with what is causing the issue.
In conclusion notes; and in case the 5.0 update doesn't fix the issue, and in knowing that my small fix can be resolved with the data cable plugged in. Is there another fix I could try, with an app, rooted app, or with an Xposed module that anyone knows of that I could at least try? Any help in this direction would be much appreciated.

My N4 had a broken mic out of the box brand new lol. It was the latest batch, made in October 2013
I fixed it by getting a new mic because i diagnosed it wasn't a software issue
I ended up flashing "LRX08 B15.5S" from [L][5.0] Android L-pv N4 [B15.1 updated 10-27-2014] and I also put the "91u-a9: AOSP/L" Kernel from [KERNEL] [4.4.4/CM/(L)] [Bleeding Edge] Unleashed Kernel Series [91u-a9] [10/28/2014] Thinking there might be a chance it would fix my problem bringing it to 5.0 instead of 4.4.4.
I thought it worked all day yesterday without the data cable needing to be plugged in, I ran tests all day and it worked fine. Today is a different story though. I guess the data cable creates some form of initial connection the phone needs for my mic to work, and leaving it long enough it looses that connectivity. I'm not sure.
I don't have any intentions sending the phone in to get fixed, or repaired, as I'll be upgrading my nexus soon enough. I guess at this stage my fix is too cut the very end off of an old cable and have it in my pocket for incoming and outgoing calls. Anyone else have another solution?
Best Regards.

flashed stock. Problem still persists.
OK, I know this is a pretty old tablet but I'd at least like to be able to get a smooth browsing, email, and streaming experience out of it; I'm not looking to be able to play games or multitask on it.
I'm running the latest version of lollipop and the N7 is rooted. Experiencing frequent serious intermittent lags/crashes, I mean like 60+ seconds can pass before the screen responds, apps hang, and the device occasionally will reboot itself. Other times, the tablet runs smoothly. Was hoping that update to lollipop would resolve some of this but, if anything, it's gotten worse. I've tried the usual "fixes" of clearing the cache, forcing TRIM, closing apps manually, and even did a factory reset + cleared all caches and still the problem persists. The problem seems to occur more frequently when I run apps like the Chrome browser, which I now avoid using. Not really sure if there is a decent process documented on how to troubleshoot these types of issues to find the root cause but the tablet is presently very annoying to use at best.
What I'd like is either: a) getting some help in determining what the root cause of the issue is, or b) switching to a ROM that doesn't have these problems.
Any thoughts, suggestions, or pointers to an in-depth troubleshooting article/thread?
If you find a solution, let me know.. I've tried combos of lollipop and kernels, kit Kat and kernels.. f2fs etc.. I keep mine as a docked alarm clock and ereader for bed.. but even that takes forever.

I gave up and went back to 4.4.4. I can FINALLY use my tablet again...
It's the flash memory in them. It's just degraded over time. I went back to 4.4.4 and it was excellent for about a week. Then it turned useless again.
That guide posted above seems to be a placebo other than the animation's being turned off. The n7 is absolutely fine after a fresh wipe, or a factory reset. For a week... I went through the guide and the only things it had that would make a real difference was animation speeds. I'll see how it does in a week.

hi! I was having the same problem, my n7 was super laggy and sometimes rebooted itself. that was just after uprading to lollipop 5.0.2. it kinda solved after rooting, doing a factory reset and installing lollipop 5.1. I hope it helps!
4.4.4 stock with all-f2fs rom. M-kernel r69. Both can be found here on xda.
This is how I got mine running smoothly again, even after trying several lollipop roms including 5.1.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
CM12 is not doing any better, I hope 5.1 could make a difference.
Stock 5.1 + Franco kernel with /data and /cache formatted to f2fs works beautifully for me. No problems at all.
I had all the same problems (and more) you and other spoke about when (a structure that holds back water and sounds like Ham) Google hounded and hounded me to install LolliCrap 5.02 (I ignored 5.0, which somehow disappeared). I HATED my #1 Nexus 7 16GB v2012. I also have a #2 Nexus 7 32GB v2012 (running HAPPILY 4.4.4) which I am still ignoring for "ham" good reason to install 5.02, an I never will install it or the latest 5.1!!
I have been exploring reinstalling the stock 4.4.4, but first I want know how to turn OFF future Google OEM Android updates and stop the "ham" badgering that there is a "new update available. But in the mean time, want to make #1 N7 useful again, I bite the bullet, backed up everything and did a factory reset and reinstalled everything. Even though I still HATE LolliCrap, my #1 N7 16GB is running pretty snappy again though some apps absolutely DON'T LIKE LolliCrap OS and are hanging and hanging and slow and crash (lazy Devs that aren't fixing whatever is causing that with 5.x). Apps I've noticed that are horribly slow with 5.x are Outlook, Skype, Yahoo Mail, Weather Underground, Drop Box, others
So, do a full reset and reinstall after backing up your data. You're gonna lose everything anyway when you Root and Boot Unlock to install an older version of Android or a custom ROM.
Hope this helps.
Glad to see another post here on the very topic I'm looking for. I'm currently running stock 5.1, completely stock, and it's just as bad as 5.0 was. I've read up enough to realize the issue is a flaw with the device, but am going to try and devote an evening or 3 to making this thing work before I completely give up on it. My goal is a minimal, feature poor but reasonably fast device for browsing, email, and some specific apps (a game or 2 and the Harmony Remote app)
Below are the areas I'm looking at, if anyone has advice or tips on any of these I'd really appreciate it:
Custom Kernel- Franco or MKernel r69? Need to investigate
F2FS - This is probably the best shot
Custom ROM - May stay stock, but if anyone knows of a lean, limited feature bloat ROM let me know!
Lightweight Browser - Can we get the original "Browser" App to install? Other options?
Basic EMail Client - not sure about this one..
The moment I saw the thread title, I knew I was not alone on this.
I remember the behavior first started with 4.4.4 actually, refusing to turn the screen on sometimes etc. I tried CM12+f2fs+mkernel 69 and it went well for a few days, then stuff broke again. I first suspected it's a RAM issue because I have two users running, but it constantly has about 150-200MB free (counting the cached apps, 400+ otherwise).
I guess I'll try slimkat 4.4.4 + f2fs modification, hope it can get the tablet running again.

1. For some reason Franco never boot my tablet for me...I've been using mkernel r69 and that's working really well.
2. Yep, a must.
3. Tried several custom roms and came back to stock.
4. Opera
5. Stock email, the one can be downloaded via playstore?
Rastapop with Franco kernel runs great to me. Keeping this thing alive.

To remove the update questions you got to root the device and disable the SystemUpdateService service of Google Service Framework and Google Play Services applications (don't know, maybe only Play Service one is really required, but better block both of them).
To do that use this application http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice

In my experience best custom ROM is Resurrection Remix.. I tried all tilapia Lolllipop ones except AICP, which now I'm very curious to try.. but I flashed Paranoid Android 4.6 BETA 6 yesterday and I will not change it until Google releases 5.1 firmware for tilapia too and people say this build is finally smooth and nice (well, too much hope, I know.. Lollipop will never be smooth on Nexus 7 2012, I fear )
Sofar I'm about 24 hours in using SlimKat with F2F2 (followed this post here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2678142) using "Browser" that it comes with, and so far just GMail. Initial findings are very positive, it's quite fast, but I'm sure that could change.
Next steps (thanks for the ideas all!):
Install Opera
There's actually an update to SlimKat, but i'm waiting to see how the tablet performs as is without touching anything
Install and configure EMail client from Play store
Kernel - looks like this version of SK already uses the M Kernel so should be good there
There is an updated, F2FS modified version of Slimkat in that thread around page 90 or something.
I'm using that at the moment and it's been fine I guess.
Word of warning: recents menu is bugged to secondary user acounts. Only shows apps if they have been also installed for the primary user.
Yeah, I'm going to give myself a week or so on this older build and make sure it's stable before doing that. Definitely some stuff I miss from Lollipop in this, but if this is enough to breath new life into the tablet.. I'm willing to accept that loss :good:
