Hi guys,
All this bootloader stuff is confusing me coming from an S2..
So far i have,
1. Installed custom bootloader and rooted using After OTA
2. Dont remember how, but installed Twrp 2.2
3. Installed GodMachine 81kernal using the goo manager app.
I have not used the tablet much, but have bought it recently. It came with HC and got updated to 4.0.3 as soon as I checked for an update.
The tablet was fine, had no issues and was running smoothly. Maybe it was the Amoled effect or a higher ppi in the phone, i felt the animations were a tiny bit juddery while entering the menu for the first time.
Thought it was maybe due to lack speed, hence did all of the above.. oc.ed to 1.5 ghz
Even after the OC, the UI felt the same, used antutu as a benchmark. As soon as i installd the mods, tablet became very laggy and choppy, hence deleted the Z-ram file.
On stock ~ 5000 and above.
After mods - no oc - 4800~4900. Sometimes the scores go as low as 1200.
Oc - 6800~7000, as earler scores some times go as low as 1100-1300.
Also.some times the tablet becomes laggy soon after starting and i have newly noticed that everything on the Sd card is getting duplicated, i.e another copy is being created with the same file names and same size files, but diff icons.
Since the all the above did not yeild any usable results for me - I think the tablet and the stock ICS are fine, the UI thing is an android trait (project butter in Jelly bean eliminates the UI thing i am talkibg abt)
Tested an s3 on Ics, same UI thing that i felt, but not that noticable due to screen type and size
Hence, i feel reveting everything back to stock would be a gud idea for me as i just play nomal games and watch movies, even though i like the idea of 1.5 ghz X 2 when wanted for benchies.
So ti get back to the stock 4.0.3, which file should i use? there are soo many of them.
1. Which one.s the latest one? Pre rooted, deodexed and zip alligned also would be helpful.
2.How do i install CWM? Cause when on stock, i tried getting into the recovery, an android image showed up nothing happened. I prefer to have CWM over others cause it is familiar.
3. What advanteges will an unlocked bootloader give over a locked one for skme one who prefers a stock rom? Is it manditory for rooting?
4. Any clues about the Sd card issue? also the galary is gettin my google images up, the sync is off, but j cannot turn iff the jndividual syncs.
5. What package do u suggest for some one like me - i do not want the tablet to freeze and just want a smooth Stock like experience along with any benifits if any (but not at the expense of the battery)
Thankx in advance guys.

Update -
Disabled Acer Meida, 3D photo viewer and disbled the photo syncing. Tablet is gud and fluidic now.
But while watching youtube @ 720p using Dolphin browser, the video sometime freezes and comes back again. Audio is fine. any ideas why this might be happening ?

I guess I can use it to make every thing stock if I feel like. Stock - bootloader, Unroot, Stock kernel & Stock 3.1 HC .Then OTA to ICS.

Thats also whats happenning to me I own an s2 and this bootloader is killing me but not only that, the support here on this section is pretty low, Im seeing a lot of ppl with unanswered questions unlike my beloved s2 section here on xda, so I might not root my tab after all due to the slow and maybe none supported helpers here to help you.

flashing the unpatched bootloader will also flash cwm as well.
benefits include being able to flash cwm!!
Dual boot linux

And this attitude is the reason why some people don't wish to help. You have to understand;
1. Everything here is free, and nobody places any pressure to use it.
2. Most issues that users have, concerning bootloaders and CWM, have already been answered multiple times. (search button)
3. People have School, job and family, and devote what little free time to help the others. If a person doesn't respond to a question, it's usually because;
a. They don't know the answer.
b. The problem is a repetitive one already answered (search button)
c. They just don't have the time.
To compare the 500 forum to the S2, is comparing apples to oranges. GS2 users outnumber 500 users by probably >100-1, so it makes sense there are more users in that forum.
A lot of people put a lot of behind the scenes work getting mods, kernels, bootloaders, apps, etc working for the 500/501. Not to mention they do a lot of PM support that you just don't see.
So give some folks a break. Most questions here get answered.

This is normal behavior. Use of a third party launcher might clear this.

You can OC to 3ghz and the UI will always feel the same. OC has no effect on the UI, but only on games and some graphic intensive apps. You seem to misunderstand what OC does. The large benefit, is UV and some of the newer governors like lultzactive and savagedzen. These are designed to save battery without a performance loss. Also, depending on governor, benchmarks can actually decrease the more you run them. And benchmarks, are never to be trusted.

This is normal as the android system is obviously doing something it couldn't do when it was sleeping or turned off. The ghost icons are pretty normal, as I have them also. You can see which ones are the real files. No explanation for it, but I'm used to it. This is just how "windows" sees things. I would guess it's kernel/bootloader related, but if tht's the worse that happens, I can live with it.

If you only want benchmarks, and aren't interested in gaming or battery life, why bother OC? The primary reason to OC/UV is to save battery and have better GPU performance.

Disabling those, and others, is always a good start. Probably explains a lot of your problems. As with Dolphin and Youtube, good luck. Not much better browser, although Dolphin has a habit of just closing out.

I did not have the chance to really spend quality time with the tablet till now, leave alone tweaking it...
I know that OC is not the key and Jelly bean is - but no harm in trying
Got a chance to test two Asus Terga 3 Tablets, both factory reset, one updated to JB & one on ICS.
Did the UI thing side to side and - woila !!! Project butter Shines )
I will post my developments in this thread, cause in a few days i will finish my engagements and will become free.

Naw, it's ok Mate.
Everybody thinks that OC is the way to go. But really, it only benefits games, some films, and battery (UV). The 50x series is pretty good about battery once you learn battery management with the help of a good UV kernel. (but hey, I like benchmarks also )
As with the momentary "stutter" when first going into the apps drawer, I can say this, get a third party launcher. Or, do some V6 Supercharge.
Also, as with my 701, under ICS 4.0.4 I had the same stutter. The JB update fixed it.

Guys,
Most of my UI thingies solved !!!!
Just installed the Nova launcher, meddled with the settings and UI is now as smooth as silk..
I noticed that every time i start up the tablet, every thing is laggy- even the audio.pop's
I found the reason for this- the governer, as soon as i change it to anything else, every thing becomes smooth...
If the interactive governer is set after changing it initially, it still remains smooth... one can just select anyother governer (lulzactive) and use set on boot option in cpu master it anyone else has the same problem..
I went for a clean up and messed it a bit
First installed a stock 3.1 from the thread mentioned in the earlier post... but turns out a non WW package does not update OTA if outside the Us (Australia), by this time messes the recovery, hence ended up installing cwm all over again ( thanks to Moscow Desires thread+latest frimware file ) and installed the latest stock 4.0.3 + apex launcher..
I installed the Team Eos 4 ROM with Android 4.2, after finally admitting that Asus has ceased updating the TF101. I can only say everybody should do the same:
It's easy. Took me less than 30 minutes, with these instructions: http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...nt/31927-frederucos-guide-root-rom-tf101.html
The device became (and I'm not overstating it) really lightning fast. Videos play better, everything happens at once. Somehow Android now looks better also.
The browser looks the same but feels totally different. It responds immediately and pages load pretty much as fast as with a desktop browser. Write in an address and the page is there. No more "The browser is not responding / wait or close" dialogs.
It's actually very stable and everything works. Nothing has crashed for me since installing, not even the browser, which is really something. The browser used to crash once or twice each time I used it.
You can install Adblock Plus (the Eos ROM comes rooted) and Avast with firewall
User control. A device can now have several user profiles. No more need to share your private issues with other members of the household.
The TF101 feels like a new device again suddenly
(Ps. Asus stopped updating TF101 after 1,5 years on the market, as they've agreed with Google. This is not very good customer service. 18 months is nothing - it feels like "take the money and run". They leave their customers with potential security problems, with outdated software. The older the software is, the more likely it is to be exploited.)
I'm also very satisfied with the Team EOS ROM. For me it's not quite as stable as stock, but it's faster and smoother.
A few notes:
- User profiles are not fully supported by most apps yet. I suggest you stay away for now, at least until we get decent su(do) support.
- Team EOS ROMs, while they put a lot of effort and time in (and I DO appreciate it!) are still non-official ROMs and devs work with what they have, so you can still expect bugs and random issues while they're reported and ironed out. Don't expect a 100% flawless ROM.
- 18 months is the time that Google will provide manufacturers with updates, that does not mean the manufacturer has any obligation to push out the update. If any of you guys saw the post here about the new AiO Transformer, you can see Asus are moving on to bigger and better things. While I'm not that happy myself about no official 4.1+ for this device, I'm pleased to see there's people working hard to make us awesome ROMs to keep up with the new stuff. Also, most other Asus tablets are announced to have the 4.1 update, so it's really just their oldest tablet (launched on March 30th 2011) that isn't getting it.
- You can "double" your "RAM" by adding swap space to your device on your fat32 internal sdcard space using Swapper (I mention it because it's useful to some extent - not real ram - and it's seldom mentioned).
I've mentioned it before... but I suspect that stability/performance issues are tied to the SBK revision you have, and the B/C version.
I look at Asus not supporting updates for the TF101 in this way: This tablet was their test run for what was to become their flagship design in the tablet market. It obviously worked and since then with the later models, the tablet/netbook hybrid idea has really taken off. The 300 and the 700 have bigger and better hardware so its what they are going to focus on. Don't look at the TF101's lack of support form the big guys as being its inevitable demise as much as its chance to shine in the custom rom community. The tablet is almost 2 years old and hasn't been officially supported for a few months now but the development between CyanogenMod and EOS as well as some of the other roms avaiable for this tablet makes it really stand. Its graduating into a fully supported developer gold mine instead of going to the grave.
EOS 4 is the rom I'm currently running and its a powerhouse even with some of the bugs that are being worked out. Its definitely proof that this device still has some miles left in it.
TL;DR: I totally agree. If you want a world changing experiences on your TF101, then check out EOS!
The ROM is not quite as perfect as I first thought. It has problems with speaker volume - it's not possible to set it loud enough to make it hearable from some apps. (And yes, I know about the volume boost apps, which don't seem to help, tried several from Play).

It also works better with the K.A.T. Kernel
I love JB. But its not stable enough as they don't have official sources.
I prefer ICS and nice kernel. OC, update, Build my own Rom, add what I want, call it a day.
Truthfully tho, I only use the thing for games, Emails, Reading, and Internet. Its fine for those things. I am selling it tho cause I want an N7. But the only reason is to match my phone. A Tablet is a tablet to me.
To be honest I haven't play around with any custom ROMs for several months. What really turned me off was the lack of a file explorer which I guess is the fault of Google not including anything in the source. I really happen to to like the Asus file explorer & haven't found another one that I like. That is my main reason for not. Maybe I'll give JB another shot.

Try ES File explorer, it's not eye candy like Asus' but it has much broader support, like built-it LAN and FTP capabilities. You can just browse to your network share, and start your movie/music/whatever from there without having to copy it, etc... it's pretty cool.
Other Asus apps have been modified to work in other roms. I use their deskclock, email, weather and task manager apps on Team EOS' 4.2.1. Task manager won't actually kill any apps but it still displays them fine. There's also their dayscene wallpaper, etc... search and browse through this forum in the apps section, you'll see lots of people posted modified versions. It almost feels like stock with all those mods.
I can vouch for ES. It doesn't look pretty but it's insanely powerful for a file browser. You can access networked computer, directly access all your cloud storage and also access root if you are rooted. The only thing I would like to see them do is give you the option of dragging and dropping from one directory to another.
I also use a fair share of the Asus stock widgets and such. I noticed that wit hthe task manager, I get random FCs with it but it doesn't affect anything at all.

Try Solid Explorer - same functions as ES file explorer but looks nicer - dark and light themes are good and dual pane usage.
I'm currently using EOS Rom, overall its great, but I'm going back to LiquidSmooth (4.1) for the following reasons:
-Performance. LiquidSmooth performance is the reason why I'm keeping this device even though Asus doesn't support it anymore. Performance is beyond my beleif. (Only gripe: random reboot once every 48 hours or less, while sleeping. Still, could be worse)
-Weird EOS nightly 90 bug for me. LCD backlight randomly turns off until next reboot.
On another note: +1 for Solid Explorer. My choice too. I considered AntTek too but in the end I think Solid Explorer fits my needs better. And cheaper!

Awesome! I finally decided to install EOS after reading your post. This old Tf101 feels like a brand new tablet now and iam not exaggerating.
I compare the webpage loading time with iPad 2 and they are compatible! Thanks for the post and the developer team.
I want to recommend everyone to flash.
I am big EOS4 fan now as well. last months with Timduru's work has litteraly change my tabs. even has my ipod luvin kids wanting time on them.
they are stable enough now that i can hand them over to the kids and evrything just works.
my setup i use
latest eos4
latest KAT kernel (this makes the rom run far more smooth and buttery as well as fixes minor glitches for me)
KAT app (Havent really had a need for this other then it can help get sound volume up in some apps for me. only lost sound once and kat app brought it back easily)
APEX launcher (really speeds up and smooths out the desktops and adds load of customisation i like)
cifs manager so my pc server now is like an extra internal memory card built into my tab
Alot of ppl have made a few working roms and they all deserve a heaping load of thanks for thier time and efforts.
no rom is 100% but a few are close enough now to be very usefull and far better off then where asus left us.
Over the Christmas holidays I took the plunge and rooted and flashed my TF101 with RaymanFX CM10 (I think, that's the version, the device isn't with me ATM). Since then I've been impressed with the speed and functionality but I've had a two reoccurring issues, Wifi drops out frequently and no sound after a few hours uptime. Both issues necessitate a reboot to fix.
Anyway... I'd like to try EOS4 with the KAT kernel, it seems to be more actively developed and used.
As I said the device is already rooted and flashed it since it was a PITA to reload all my apps and setup email accounts etc, I'd like to know if installing EOS4+KAT is going to require completely wiping everything again or are there steps I can take to reduce the effort?
Just to confirm, I'd need the flash 3 things from the recovery bootloader to switch: 1. EOS4 zip, 2. KAT kernel, 3. gapps is that correct?
Pete
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063406 (thread with links for the eos4 )
yes do need all 3 as well your recovery needs to be compatible with 4,2,1. you usualy need the latest version of recovery to be able to do that.
I use twrp 2.3.2.3 which is very easy to instal. just get the goomanager of the play store if u want this recovery and it can instal it for u as well and it will tell you when there are updates to your rom etc....
as a general rule I always do full wipes when changing roms. cache, system etc.... as sometmes the file system is different and needs this.
Why I should not flash a custom ROM:
nothing supports the Slider. Sigh.
Emitted from my Nexus Prime
RaymanFx CM10.1 with the latest nightlies uploaded by 'josteink' and kat kernel 94 for CM10.1 works really well. Full android 4.2.2, smooth and fast. Also adding gps.config file seems to get the gps working as well.
I'm still kicking Team EOS3 #81 with KatKernel #69 & KAT App
99.9999999% bug free
Only thing I have to do sometimes is press a button in Kat App to reinitialise the audio after a long deep sleep
Lightning fast and butter smooth and everything works perfectly
Couldn't agree more having the Team EOS 4 custom ROM has been wonderful. Thanks to the team for all the effort and time.
Hi all,
Just wondering which ROM I should install to get the best out of the old t101? I've tried a whole bunch in the past few months and all of them seem to run pretty damn sluggish despite them claiming to be "fast". I'm sure that it didn't run this horrid when I first bought the device when it first came out.
I don't fancy going back to honeycomb, but if thats the only way to get things running nicely back again then I guess there isnt much choice.
are there any 4.0/4.1/4.2 roms which run good enough to use as a daily driver? Currently running the Paranoid Android port.
many thanks in advance.
Highly recommend the KatKiss 4.2.2 or 4.3 ROMs.
Be sure to use TWRP recovery and do a factory reset from recovery. I would HIGHLY recommend a FORMAT DATA as well as this will speed up the IO performance of the /sdcard/ that can make it slow. This will wipe all data.
If you do not wipe data it will take some time to scan the media on the tab on first boot. Maybe 15-90 min.
If you don't for at data, be sure to run the two optimize scripts in a terminal to help with the slow IO issue.
/etc/kat/optimizedb and /etc/kat/optimizestorage

Hi all,
Just wondering which ROM I should install to get the best out of the old t101? I've tried a whole bunch in the past few months and all of them seem to run pretty damn sluggish despite them claiming to be "fast". I'm sure that it didn't run this horrid when I first bought the device when it first came out.
I don't fancy going back to honeycomb, but if thats the only way to get things running nicely back again then I guess there isnt much choice.
are there any 4.0/4.1/4.2 roms which run good enough to use as a daily driver? Currently running the Paranoid Android port.
many thanks in advance.

Honestly, I haven't seen anything like this with any ICS-onwards ROM vs stock. 100% the opposite.
When you say sluggish, what do you mean? Desktop transitions, animations, load times, specific app performance? With EOS/KatKiss 4.1 ROM's onwards, everything about my TF is improved. Desktop transitions, scrolling browser smoothness, etc. are all seriously improved since honeycomb.
With KatKiss 4.3, I haven't even bothered yet to overclock.
I run KatKiss 4.3, and so far it is the best ROM that I have seen for this tablet. It is much faster than stock Honeycomb ever was, and has been extremely stable for me. My tablet has currently been up for fourteen days with no issues.

I have the same problem as OP. The stock was pretty smooth, but after upgrading to KatKiss 4.2.2 everything is sluggish. Animations/transitions are choppy. Browsing the web is becoming an exercise in frustration with long page loads. The subjective feeling is as if the processor became slower or there is less RAM available. I compared this with a first gen Nexus 7 and that thing runs the way my transformer used to.
Well I stand corrected. I upgraded to KatKiss 4.3 and my Transformer just flies. So it was either a bad installation or something about 4.2.2 that it did not like.

cool. will try to install katkiss then. I think thats probably one of the few ones i havent already tried
will come back later with a trip report.
I installed the new official rom v50020a and are disappointed with performance especially in games. That performance was superior v18a. This rom seemed to me the most powerful than all roms, since the battery is emptied very quickly, especially in stand by. In AnTuTu benchmark 18a give almost 27,000 and v20a less than 24,000. In Real Racing 3 feel the difference. V50020a is final rom for OTA? Performance and battery worse than the first official rom. I think I'll go back to 4.2.2.

If the v18a was superior, why not go back to it instead?
The problem is that the rom v18 of battery empties very quickly in standby. I have to install a custom rom based on v18 with another kernel.

What do you call 'very quickly'? I found it emptied slower than with 4.2.2 in standby with WiFi on.
I set the wi-fi to be turned off when the tablet is in stand by. It is among the settings after installing a new rom.

I don't, but that is not my point. What do you call losing charge very quickly?
I overdid it a little with unloading the battery. Battery runs exactly I was wi-fi settings on standby.
I had it for a few days but battery use seemed as normal.

I reinstalt v18a and battery works normally stand by.
Im sticking with 4.2.2 based on being able to watch amazon prime. Huge bummer KK doesn't allow it.

It rocks, just imagine your sanpy600 performs like an S4!!! Battery is much better, UI nicer and everything is smoother and better then before!!!
But just test it for yourself. I love this tablet and 4.4.2, thanks LG.

Did you notice any difference on the screen brightness, gamma values and 7 spots on the bottom?
Jessooca said:
The battery life is actually better,by nearly 2 hours. I have tested and ran it for 5 days, it's all about your settings. If you have the screen on 50% one day or 65% another day it's always going to fluctuate.
Theres no complaints about the battery life with 18 here, easily I get 2 hours more. Some days 4.

The fix for Watching Amazon Prime is in a thread by, i believe it was Surviveland....
Make sure that you have UNinstalled the flash player installed in your device if you have one installed first and then install the hacked one for compatibility reason.
1) Download Dolphin Browser from the Play Store
[/B]You MUST have Dolphin Jetpack on in the settings to enjoy it.
As far as I have noticed, Dolphin Jetpack better solves the compatibility with flash player, such as crash issue & freeze issue in full screen.
2) Download the hacked flash player HERE: http://goo.gl/MuU9SU
If your device refused to install apk outside Google Play, you need to change your settings in your device (Settings> Securities> Unknown resources) to allow installation of apps from unknown sources.
3) Make sure that the flash setting in Dolphin Browser (Click Menu>Settings>Web Content>Flash Player) is on.

I too would like to know if they fixed the gamma. I'm hesitant to update because I already have things configured they way I like it. I'm thinking I'll hold out for a flashable zip just in case I have to downgrade.

Not sure about gamma as I never tested it. I can tell you that the brightness has been increased and overall the screen looks fine (to me anyways)

I got the base rom to run pretty good once I turned off all notifications and animations, and set the max number of background processes to 4
I like los14.1... but I've barebones the build by deleting everything I don't want and then I added some tweaks to make it feel real good.
All the custom roms are more or less the same (except for stock based like stock+ rom) because they are all made from Steel01's sources baked with custom rom specific files. So pick the one you find the prettiest or the most useful...
Hi All
What is latest ROM , there is any stability one from end of 2018 . Maybe someone working on new one ?
It depends what you're going for on your tablet. If you're aiming to keep all the Nvidia specific features I would recommend the 5.4.1 stock+ rom. If you don't care about any of that I believe that lineage is the way to go. Between the two, performance is the same for the most part, lineage is based on 7.1.2 though instead of 7.0, so you get a few newer features. If I have time later to come back to this I'll link them.

I've been trying the 5.4.1+ rom. For some reason it crashes and boot loops after installing Swift Keyboard Damn, I really like that keyboard. Then I updated Magisk on it, to get a message saying the new Magisk app isn't supported. So I uninstalled it to download the previous version and that caused a bootloop now too
Just flashed it again, hopefully it works better this time.
I am also wondering what is the best ROM for my K1 is?
First off, I bought this tablet used. Did some research and found out about the battery recall, mine is not one of them, as in I have the newer/better battery.
Secondly I did update the stock rom to 5.4 but the battery drain was horrendous. No gaming, just surfing facebook or the internet was a draining the battery in a few hours. Even in standby on my nightstand, battery was almost dead the next morning. Then after some research many people said to downgrade to 5.2 which I did and it pretty much fixed the battery drain issue.
Then I found out about LineageOS and decided to install 15.1, performance is good, but does still experience some battery drain issues, but not as bad as 5.4.
I also know that earlier this year LineageOS has returned support for the Nividia Shield K1 tablet, but is that for OS 17 and how long do I have to wait for that version?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

On 5.4 to get regular battery usage you have to enable custom cpu profiles, the default profile doesn't idle properly and the cpu's stay in a higher frequency state. You can then have all 4 cores enabled and it will idle properly (well it does for me), and you have nvidia driver support for the original wifi game controller which i have.
Otherwise, if you use a LineageOS 14 build, you can have full hardware video acceleration, on 15 builds you won't have hardware video acceleration.
So what your saying is I can go back to 5.4 and just play with the settings? Any special apps to do this, or just all within the android settings that need changing in order to have the performance and stop the battery drain problem?
If it's just the android settings, what are the settings I need to change? Tutorial?
Thanks
AOSP extended from bit obsession is a bit old but still snappy!

honestly, i think we are all screwed
my tablet wont charge at all now. it shows the icon on the screen saying it is charging but it doesnt charge at all. sometimes i can get about 10% on it.
the computer no longer recognises the device and i have only ever used official ota firmwares for it
spoke to Nvidia and all i got was the out of warrenty response.
they no longer care in anyway about shield tablet users and as it is discontinued its not like you can even buy a replacement. you cant buy secondhand either because theyll all just have the same bollocks battery issues we have on ours now.
I'll contribute a data point for anyone reading in late-2019 going into 2020:
I'm on Stock+ 5.4.1 on my K1 and it has been great for me so far in the last few weeks since I flashed it. I had been on the stock Marshmallow firmware for the past three years and was having the typical lag issues on wake. It was so severe that the tablet was completely unusable coming out of a deep sleep. It was also a chore to reboot it because even the lag on holding down the power button was agonizing and unpredictable. It was worse than booting Windows with an old hard drive.
I've had no lag-on-wake issues with Stock+ 5.4.1 so far. It's like coming back to remember why I liked this tablet in the first place after hating it for the past couple of years. I hadn't used it for anything other than daily alarms over the past year and change, but lately, I've been using it for bedside reading again instead of my phones.
To address a few of the issues that have been brought up in this thread:
I haven't had any battery drain issues with Stock+ 5.4.1. It seems to do about the same on my K1 as Marshmallow did, which was 100% to 15% on idle except for daily alarms (and snoozes) from Sunday through Saturday.
I ordered a new 6000 mAh replacement battery from AliExpress and will be installing it when needed. My current battery life isn't great, but it's not horrible either. I think it still manages to have about 80% of its original capacity.
After installing Stock+ 5.4.1, I flashed the latest Magisk 20.1 zip (Stock+ 5.4.1 came with Magisk 16.0) from within TWRP at a later date with no issues. Magisk 18+ is not compatible with Magisk Manager versions older than 7.0.0, but the old versions of Magisk Manager were bad in that they would always ask you to update to the latest version regardless of what version of Magisk you had installed. Basically, Magisk Manager was asking you for permission to nuke itself.
I have never used the official Facebook or Messenger apps, but virtually every comment I've ever read about them say that they're battery killers. Use a third-party app that combines both and has a smaller memory footprint.
I used to be an avid user of SwiftKey, but I've since soured on it. I haven't installed it on my K1 since the firmware upgrade and I don't know if I will going forward. The biggest benefit of SwiftKey used to be the dedicated number row, but its predictive swiping was the worst I had ever used. I'm on Gboard now and it seems to be working well. The only feature I miss from SwiftKey is the arrow keys to move the text cursor.
I am also wondering what is the best ROM. I got a K1 used as well not too long ago, and I mostly want to use it as a study tool for some CompTIA certifications in 2020, so viewing PDF's/word docs, exam simulations, and tutorial videos will be it's primary function. I do like comics so I would like it to perform snappy.
I really have no interest in gaming or social media.

I went with a stock-based ROM because I still wanted all of the tablet's functionality to work as designed, even though I've never played games on my K1 using a controller or created an Nvidia account. However, as long as retaining those features won't cause the device to run poorly and there isn't anything inherently poor about the stock experience, I don't mind. Stock-based ROMs are usually easier to set up and install. Nvidia stock firmware isn't known for being particularly bloated or heavy like that of some phone manufacturers, but of course LineageOS is still going to be faster at the cost of some device-specific features.
Given your intended use, as long as you use something newer than the stock Marshmallow firmware and its wake lag issues, you probably don't need to worry about much else.
I decided to dig my K1 out of the closet and have a play with over the holidays. I just flashed the stock recovery 5.20 but for some reason I cannot update or download any apps from the Google Play Store. I keep getting error 963. I searched how to fix this but nothing has worked.
Anyone else been able to fix this?
