[Q] Something for Newbes :) - Xperia Z1 General

Hey wonder if there is a giud and stuff for newbes
I have recently changed my phone from a Icrap to Sony Xperia Z1.
Was so tired of Apple that they shall decide everything that you are allowed to do so i changed.
Now i have rooted my Z1 and want to find out how to Change stuff on the Z1.
Things like GUI, tweeaks like fullscreen disable and enable stuff.
Much of the stuff in here i dont understand and i am scarde to try to do stuff because of my lack of knowledg.
I have downgraded my Z1 and then rooted it and then flashed it to newest Firmware again but that was a guide so.
And then to do all of this tings do you need to have win 7 or win xp?
I use windows 8 and hopefully everything supports that
Cheers Stian

look at the top of the general thread, there is a HUGE thread on everything for new comers, updating, backup flashing new fw etc...
as for cistumizations, look for xposed framework, it requires root and lets you install addons that can modify your device a lot, the app has his own repository of mods you can browse, pretty neat. i use mostly gravitybox and "xperia long press" for quick access to wifi and BT menu from the drawer.

With SEUS, flashtool and Pc companion there isn't much you can do to totally brick the phone. I played around, bricked it a couple of times and generally changed things until the phone both worked and became the way I want.

As guys said - you have bunch of threads and "how to" guides.
If you still don't know to do something send PM to someone who knows or just tag that person here and he'll see your question.

Noobie here... Seeking some advice post root

Hi everybody,
I just moved from an iphone 3g (which i had jailbroken) to an incredible thanks to at&t contract finally finishing. Hv rooted the inc on my mac using the unrevoked method. Everything works fine (still have stock eclair 2.1 and sense running). Hv installed a bunch of apps from the market but hv not sideloaded anything yet or uninstalled anything (htc sense etc etc) yet. I would really appreciate some guidance from the community on the following since i am very new to the platform as a whole.
1. I dont want to lose the ability to update to the official froyo release (whenever it happens) so will I have to unroot (if thats even possible) to get the froyo update? If yes, whats the correct way so that I can bookmark that.
2. I want to be able to use the tethering without paying 20$ extra per month to VZ (in fact would probably use USB tethering to my macbook more often than wifi tethering/hotspot, but obviously I would like both! ). How should i do that? Obviously the stock app will just alert verizon, right? Is there another app that will work now that i hv rooted? Any special instructions to follow?
3. Would like to optimize the capability of the device by removing crapware and useless stuff which comes with the phone. Hv not yet even figured out what each app does yet. I will use my inc primarily for entertainment - games, social networking, browsing, streaming music, videos, google voice, true VoIP (not official VZ skype), GPS navigation, tethering (when no wifi) but will be OTA syncing my office exchange email account, contacts, calendar as well to make this a backup phone to my official bberry. Any suggestions on which apps to remove? Also how should I remove them without bricking the phone. Is there a cleaner method?
4. I actually like Sense even though it seems it uses up some memory - any way i can remove the useless parts of Sense (since I wont be using USB sync and I am sure some other stuff in sense is just bloatware) without losing the other features that look great - to be honest the phone looks too plain without sense (nexus 1 looked really naked). I would like to retain the look and feel of the sense ui.
5. How do I get swype on this? I played with it when i was shopping for android phones on the captivate (which unfortunately was on at&t) and I am amazed at how great that was! I badly badly badly badly need that!!
6. Any standard add-ons, apps which you would recommend for my intended usage?
7. Now that I am rooted which post-root apps should i install to make the inc more useful? Any obvious ones which you would recommend?
8. The people sense widget is just too much, anything a bit saner which is like a launchpad but without the screen wastage?
9. In jailbroken iphones, you could install lockinfo which was a spectacular agglomeration of all things (missed calls, voice mails waiting, email msg list, twitter feed, facebook feed, weather, calendar, tasks, sms msgs) in 1 simple scrollable screen. Anything similar in Sense/HTC widgets/App store? Just one glance would tell me everything.
Sorry, since I am new I decided to ask all questions in 1 shot. Obviously dont expect to have all questions answered by 1 person but if the devs/users can point me in the right direction, with links and some comments, I will greatly appreciate it.
Thanks and hoping to be a contributor to the android community sometime soon as I was in the iphone community until i just could not take at&t anymore.
1.yes you need to unroot to recieve otas
2.there is an app incthe market called wifi tether that is free.

No, if you are running the stock rom ou will recieve OTAs. The OTA doesn't magically detect "this phone is rooted."

Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
No. it's also not suggested and is reported to have negative side effects.
One important thing, Install Rom Manager from the market.
With this app you can do a backup of the Rom (stock sense and rooted) you're running now and install others to try, if you don't like them just restore the one you had before and done, you can as many back up as you want.
Also check in the theme section and you'll find lots of themes to make your phone look and work beautiful, this also allows you to get to recovery without having to turnoff your phone and install anything you want from the sd card.
Also, if you don't like some of the crap ware that Sense has, there's a post for removing the apps you don't want on Sense and it tell you which ones are safe to remove.

Hope this helps a little.
Some apps for us the rooted...shootme or drocap to take pictures of your screens, titanium backup, wifi tether, etc.
Appreciate the help everybody! Only thing I am still seeking an answer for is swype on my inc if anybody can guide me.

[Q] SAMSUNG = Nightmare

Before anybody starts to bash me for NOT SEARCHING, Well, I did, I have been doing nothing in the past 3 days except for SEARCHING, here at XDA, and over our friend Google.
Simple things in life that I DON"T KNOW "WHY" I can't do: Its all regarding my Galaxy Tab:
1. SYNC Application that REALLY WORKS ?????
Cannot find Literally ANY that could connect to my Tab, Tried Kies 1.5.3 & 2.0 , (YOUR PHONE IS NOT SUPPORTED)
Tried SAMSUNG New PC STUDIO - TOTAL Failure!
2. No Descent BACKUP APPLICATION? OMG
I remember very well that my HTC Touch HD / HD2 came with a Full version of Sprite Backup, Nothing for Samsung? Do I have to fiddle around trying 30+ to backup (ALL PROGRAMS & DATA)?????????
3. WHERE THE HELL IS THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE THAT HAS FIRMWARE UPGRADES AND DOWNLOADS?
Its not a NOKIA you know, It's a Tablet that is using a NOT-Fully-Optimized-For-Tablets Froyo version. and its an OPEN SOURCE for God's sake, OPEN HOW???
Lots of official Fixes should be easily accessible, along with ROM and RADIO Upgrades, Just like what I'm used to with HTC Devices since 8 years
Where is SAMSUNG SUPPORT???????????????????????????
I just have the Silly User Guide and that's about it, what the hell have they been thinking????????????
have they dumped the device, and became fully DEPENDABLE on XDA-Dev?
4. After Restoring Factory settings, I install very limitted amount of Appz, all legal and free, then restore my Contacts using one application, then Restore my SMS using another Application, then restore my Bookmarks with a third application (Damn it) I then lose the ringtone.
It simply does not RING nor VIBRATE when someone calls me.
Please don't tell me to TRY Titanium Backup!!!!!!!!!!
Do I have to go through an infinite list of CRAP, in COLORS, to BACKUP my DATA????????????????????????????????
I'm Terribly sorry to come RANT in here, its my only WAY to Exhaust my ANGER
What astonishes me here at XDA too, that there is no section for Guides, Tips, just some FM versions, and lots of talk about UNLOCKING the SGT, am I blind to that extent?

I know that the uprades as far as firmaware should come from your provider just as it does with your phone. Just like with the HD2, they release a firmware update to the providers, then the providers release it after they tweak it.
What seems to be wrong with the firmware that is on the tab? I have had my tab a few month and have had ZERO issues with it. I rooted it, and thats all I needed.
As far as syncing your data, you dont want to use titanium backup that does everything, so I am not sure what your asking for.
Dear Willy
If you want real help, please, tell us what is your vision of ideal backup and sync.
I don't see you using Google for that.
I have switched from iPhone in part because I didn't want iTunes and computer every time I wanted to reload data. With Google I am in sync with my online data after logging on Gmail.
It is possible that it does not work as well outside the US but for that purpose Samsung provides Kies software for Windows. Check this link: http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/main/supportMain.do
I did not use it because don't see useful for me but it is exactly a replacement for online sync and backup.
Hope this will help
Thank you dubie76, Now I have some understandings
Thank you too Adapt0r, you are totally correct regarding iTunes and their Lock-Down policy, let alone the very tight platform.
But Still, TB is Okay, but #1 its a PAID App, #2 its really complicated to go through lots of options in various color-codes to get the job done.
I was thinking that there would be an Application that has (Backup/Restore) 2 buttons to do what you need, as simple as that.
and although the SGT is being released in the US to carrier, they also release it in some other countries w/o a Carrier nor a Contract, in such case, SAMSUNG should be providing the Support for it, no body else.
Regarding PC Sync, I just need it to upgrade my FW (the official way) w/o hacks and boot-loader modes, I did some studies regarding my current FW, and its 3 month old, I demand an upgrade to make my usage easier, not to mention the bug fixes.
Every first-release FW/ROM has its flaws, that it get sorted out through UPDATES, got my point?
one more time I would like to thank you for the positive and friendly attitude, I really appreciate that

TB will backup and restore everything with one click. Its the batch operation. Yes the pro version is paid. If you really want it, I can PM it to you, but you have blocked PMs. I have been messing with hybrid roms and builds for a long time and I recommend you dont mess with tablet roms yet.
In your list of complains you can add: the worst support for Microsoft Exchange ever seen
The Tab Software is a joke... I can't believe I have read in several articles it was much better than many other Android devices. I don't want to know how bad others are....

What do you want to backup exactly? (Other than Descent which doesn't have an Android port that I'm aware of).
Kies should work fine, if it's not working then you may have the SGT in debug mode or something.
Kies _is_ the "official website" for firmware updates.
I've never owned a phone that will backup _everything_ for later restoration after a factory reset in an easy fashion. An iPhone does a reasonable job of it I guess.
@dubie76:
Words of Thanking can't do you justice, Truely appreciate it.
KIES, for Some reason won't connect to my SGT, and BTW, if USB Debugging mode is enabled, you will get a prompt on the tab saying that you have to Disable it if you want to connect your SGT to your PC.
The weird thing is, some plp. say that we should choose UPGRADE, from the list that pops up when connecting the SGT to a PC/Notebook. Well, I only have KIES / MASS STORAGE / MEDIA PLAYER.
Last question:
If I bought my SGT from KUWAIT (Middle East), do I have to use a KIES version that is Downloaded off Kuwait region (through SAMSUNG Website)? if so, then that's absurd, if Not, then what should I do?
KIES will be used only to UPGRADE the FW, not for backup or Appz installations or anything else.
thx again for all the help, its so comforting to Ask and be Answered, I Love you XDA People.
Will
I have the same predicament. After installing the Kies, it went well then suddenly it froze. I reinstalled it and updated the driver, still cannot sync. The apps just stayed in "connecting" mode and cannot seem to recognize the gtb. I'm hoping for another alternative. It seems this Kies thing is a waste of my time.
The Samsung website specifically says that Kies will not work in certain territories.
Google search for samsung galaxy tab FAQs and you will find a link that contains all sorts of responses from Samsung, official ones, regarding the issues people seem to be having on this thread.

[Q] Get rid of Sony Ericsson home - only want Android running NO Sony Ericsson stuff!

I want to get rid of all the Sony Ericsson stuff off my xperia play, I want Android running just as Android. Android home screen etc.
Someone said I should root the phone first - which I have done following a tutorial on this forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043630&page=1). This has been successful, but I'm not sure what to do now.
How do I get rid of everything and sort of set it back to Android standard? Do I need to get an app off marketplace and then manually remove the bloatware?? I would try this but I know if you remove the Sony Ericsson home application normally it breaks the phone.
Thanks in advance guys, sorry for the noob question!
If you are not very technical savvy (like me), i think the best you can do for now is install Titanium Backup and manually remove the bloatware. (you can find numerous threads about this here).
I personally am waiting for the guru's to release custom roms. When this starts to happen, i'm sure a stock Gingerbread rom will be released.
I'm kinda interested though myself if anything else can be done.
If you get root install launcherpro and then delete the SE home launcher with titanium backup.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046699 here you can see what you can safely remove.

Yeah but if you remove the bloatware I really want to remove, such as the Sony Ericsson home thing and all the official playstation stuff, the phone will stop working won't it?
I think what you mentioned with the stock gingerbread rom is probably the best way to go, think I will just wait untill someone does one. Or maybe even install an older version of Android.
Nobody will do a Froyo ROM for the Xperia Play. It just doesn't make sense.

you will need to root your phone 1st, then delete those junkwares.
If you are worry, then just get titanium pro and freeze those SE stuff, eg timescape, digital clock x 2, liveware, media server, xperia play, time scape widget(s).
have fun

[Q] Newbie question

Hello everyone I have few simple questions since I'm new to the scene.
1- is there a thread on this forum that includes which apps I should stay away from because they include Trojans, mail-ware...etc
2- for those who tried AVG anti-virus, is it a good one, or is there any better anti-virus that I can use?
3- is there a link to a thread that guides a new user like me on this forum, because I'm kind of lost and don't know where to begin to know about stuff like apps, rooting ...etc.
I used to be an Admin on an iPhone forum, but now I got an Android device so I have to know how things are done on this forum.
4- if there is no threads that include a guide for newbies, what are the threads on this forum that will help me to know all about rooting better than keep posting threads asking how it could be done, even though I've searched, it seemed in vain (maybe I didn't use the right keywords in my search )
5- Is Go Launcher safe? I mean installing any of it's widgets, themes ...etc would not be a chance of getting my device infected (it's all messed up because of what I read about apps that are infected in the Market :S )
Would appreciate any help provided
well ,
welcome to android ...im sure ull enjoy it more..
the thread which u would like is -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133650
I havent come across any malware or virus yet and google android market is totally safe...dont use any anti-virus app, itll jus slow down ur phone.
go launcher is totally safe....as is ADW, launcher pro, zeam, etc.
hope this helped
Thanks for the reply bro
it's gonna be like I first entered the Jailbreak scene, after that all will be ok (I hope so)
As for the thread it seems to include lots of great stuff, will read it now
And for Anti-Virus software, till now it didn't slow my Arc S (I hope it doesn't in the near future).
I don't know about ADW, but I like what Go Launcher gave me, I will be sticking around with that app, especially after knowing everything is safe (which I still don't know why I felt it's vise versa )

Recent changes a bit worrying?

Have had my Swift 2x for a few months and have been happy on the whole. Camera is just average but for the price it's a cracking phone.
Anyway, the recent announcement of the lockscreen ads for a discount on a new phone leaves me a bit uneasy. A lot has been mentioned about Truecaller replacing the stock dialer and for me the introductory period comes to an end in a week or so and I suppose the ads will start popping up on that.
I fully realise that Wileyfox need a funding stream but I do not like ads. This has got me to un Wileyfox my phone!
I installed the Non-Nexus dialer from apk mirror, google messages and contact from playstore and disabled truecaller and the stock messages and contacts. The bit that has me worried is that I prefer google stuff to what came with the phone originally.
Thing is I have felt today that my phone as a bit smoother and quicker.
Trying to avoid flashing Lineage as once Ive started flashing then I dont stop until I break it!!!!!
Anyway, just wondering if someone else feels the same.
First thing I did after the Nougat update was disable the Truecaller and install the nonnexus
However, that's all the unwileyfoxing I needed to do (ok I installed Nova launcher since I was used to it, but in fact I haven't found anything wrong with Foxhole per se). I'm still very happy with the phone and especially with the software support. As in, this feels the best phone I ever had.
(as to the recent changes re. Wileyfox income flow, the jury is still out on that - as long as I can disable stuff I don't really care that much)
I did exactly the same right after getting the phone.
Installed Google Phone, Contacts, Messages and disabled the original ones. Reflashed opengapps to get rid of the clutter, switched to Nova Launcher. Happy camper.
Just stumbled on to this post after purchasing a Wileyfox Swift 2 plus completely forgetting that Cyanogen isn't a thing anymore. . I'm coming from a heavily rooted OnePlus One (via a windows phone, but shhhhh) and wondered if you guys had any advice on what to instantly do to the phone?

As stated before in this thread:
- update the phone to the latest version (OTA)
- disable the Truecaller program and install another dialer (the 'nonnexus' version of the google phone app is my personal fave works well enough)
- install the launcher of your choice (though I find there's nothing wrong with Foxhole, you can disable the news feed if you like, I was just used to Nova Launcher)
- I've also disabled 'Wileyfox Account', because I don't need it; if they roll out some actual use for it that I find interesting, we'll see later.
For the rest there's nothing wrong with the basic installation, in my opinion. Good luck with the phone.
(I haven't rooted my phone since I didn't see the need; if you need root for something, I can't help you there)
by the way, re. Windows Phone: I had a Nokia 620 or something and was really, really happy with it. But for the lack of apps for the platform (banking apps, mainly) I would have happily stayed on. But nowadays, a smartphone without mobile banking is... sad

Thank you so much for your help, did everything you said except Nova Launcher (although I love it, I'll try anything new) had this phone about two hours and love it (especially for £150)
The only reason I rooted my first android (Sony Xperia Play) was to be able to listen to YouTube music without the app being open. Then I discovered the world of possibilities. But you're right, it is sad, hence why I'm holding off rooting this time (as you can't use android pay on a rooted device)
My Nokia hated being touched whilst on charge, would constantly lose cell signal, but the batter would last all day!

I used to root my phones but being honest, most stock android is pretty ok at the moment. I would usually root to install ad blocking but now I use dns66 so android pay and other software works without a hitch.
I use GoogleNow as a launcher btw.

Just simple tweaks like transparent notification shade and moving the clock (I hated it on the right hand side) and even changing the battery icon. I've heard Magisk seems to be able to root your phone whilst keeping Android Pay?
