Hello
I have tried a few Rom but have decided to return to stock. I used to wipe system / data / preload and chache and dalvik on my Note 1 before Re-installing any new Rom is this still the case on the Note 3 ?
I will install rom with odin so will lose recovery and root so will need to do this before I flash stock.
Thanks ingott

What does factory reset exactly do?
But, Smooth kernel has the option of choosing kernels when you flash the rom, so do I just flash the rom and choose a different kernel or what? What are my choices?
Thank you so much for replying!
Factory reset will wipe the /data/ and caches. It leave the /sdcard/ directory alone though where the media etc is. But you should still have a backup.
You can go ahead and use the SmoothROM installer to flash the kernel.
It was also suggested in one of the kernel threads every time you flash a different kernel you should re flash your ROM. Not a wipe or reset just a flash to get back to original ramdisc before a new kernel. I do this all the time now and all the problems I got after multiple flashes are gone.

So I was stupid and didn't back up. I factory resetted , deleted cache then flashed now everything is gone. My UI is back to stock but I checked in file manager and I still have my .obb / data files for my apps so what do I do?

That's what a factory reset is: everything back to stock except for anything stored in the SD directory. You have to reload all your apps from the play store.
For next time I would suggest Titanium Backup to restore all your apps when upgrading. (And always make sure you have a Nandroid before flashing a new Rom in case something goes wrong).
I have read that when installing a new ROM you should boot into recovery and wipe data & factory reset, wipe the cach partition and dalvik cache.
As this wipes all your Apps and settings, how do those of you who regularly do this replace all your Apps and settings?
I have also read that it is not wise to restore the using backups from a different ROM so does that mean going back to Google Store?

Titanium Backup is your friend. Introduce yourself to it on the Play store and enjoy the goodness!
Sent from your phone. You should be careful where you leave that thing.

Hey, when I flash a new ROM, do I need to go back to the stock ROM? I'm on Jellyblast and want to go to Evo-x. thanks!
And wiping data and cache removes bloatwares, right?

yes i suppose since there will be modified system files.
and wiping data/cache means formatting the /data and /cache partitions, removing bloatwares is different
Well you can try not to go back in stock. The important thing is you should flash the firmware where the rom is based from.

Hi.
Iam using miniROM touchwiz ui. I am unable to reset my phone. Even from cwm also. My phone remains in same state even after restting..

What do you mean by reset?
Basically you have 3 options
1- Format data in cwm
This will keep your current rom but wipe all user data - it will be like you have just flashed rom
2- flash different custom rom
in cwm format system data and cache
mount system data and cache
flash rom zip
note some roms require certain kernels to boot
3- Flash stock rom via odin
wipes all data and returns phone to stock ie first time you switched it on

Did you unlocked the bootloader? If no, you should start unlocking it but you will loose all data.

That is absolutely correct. But, as suggested before you may want to wipe the cache and dalvik cache partitions before flashing, and before you do anything in the recovery, please make a nandroid backup to restore in case you face any issues, it is very important.

you never ever need to wipe dalvik nor cache when flashing kernels. they have nothing to do with kernels. its the same as going to wipe your behind so you can fill your car up with gas.
Alright, Thanks for the clarification. I am used to the old fashioned method that always told individuals to wipe the cache and dalvik.

its from the past, when android was still young and we didnt know better. everyone was just told to do it always, regardless. and no one questioned it. but as we learned more and more, some upgraded their thinking, while others kept up with what was told to them in the past. when flashing roms as well, there is no need to wipe dalvik nor caches, as the act of flashing the rom automatically wipes both dalvik and cache
Thank you very much for updating me! I greatly appreciate it. We learn something new everyday

you do it in recovery. it makes a complete backup of everything. so if you mess something up, you can restore it(also in recovery) and be back to the same place when you made the backup.
