Does someone feel the Wi-Fi signal is weak? I just stand outside the room door, wifi signal in half, or even unable to connect. and sometimes signal seens full but it's no data transmission. I feeling wifi quality is worse than the Jelly bean. will it be fixed?
No problems here, I actually find it to be stronger then on stock
But try flashing one of the ROMs from before the wifi drivers update (which was merged on 24th December)

which Baseband are you using? I using "N7000XXLSO",We using the same roms(but i built "omni-4.4.2-20140105-n7000-NIGHTLY.zip") and Kernel except baseband(I guess),I suspect that with the baseband related.

Baseband has zero influence on wifi on Exynos4 devices.
In fact it has no influence on wifi for the majority of devices out there.

I have no idea about it. Today I found my friend had built several versions of kitkat on n7000(slim,omni).He had the same feeling with me that Jelly bean is better than Kitkat on wifi quality.:crying:

Hi All,
I don't know if any of you have had the occasional issue with the home/back button doing phantom long presses but if you have a fix is on its way and will be included in the OTA due shortly to resolve the reboot issues. I posted the following question on the Google support forums and this is what the Google rep had to say:
Thanks Ry Guy,
Is the fix likely to be included in the upcoming OTA fix for reboots? or will it be after that?
Thanks!!

Hi RobMac74,
The fix will be included in the upcoming OTA, so this shouldn't be a problem much longer
Cheers,
Ry Guy

so it looks like we have a fix coming for two important issues, from my perspective this is pretty impressive support from Google....what do you guys think?
Really nice support from Google. Pushing out OTA:s that quickly is impressive.

Apparently they are fixing a security issue with the "SD card" space being accessible. Not sure on the details as I quickly read over it the other day. Google should be able to tell all though if you search for it.
I wish they would include a fix for the poor wifi reception

I just wish they included a change log with these things. It would be nice to know what to expect, or what to look for.
For the bad calibration of the white color she will be corrected OTA? (yellow tint)

Is the reception really poor for you or is it just that the signal strength indicator for WiFi appears to be lower? I, too, noticed this when I first got my Nexus S compared to my Nexus One, however the WiFi does work up to the same distance away from my router on both phones. Maybe they just need to tweak the way the signal indicator is displayed?
In my case, it often disconnect suddenly ... and immediately reconnect.
Very often ...
While I don't have that issue with my HTC Desire.
Nothing has changed in the network.

It works OK just with minimum signal but downstairs in my kitchen I have no signal at all whereas my ipad and palm have nearly full signal. If I move closer to the router to a position where minimum signal returns, it then drops in and out...very frustrating.

Same here frequent disconnects & reconnects aswell as weak signal (probably why it keeps disconnecting). I'm on my 4th NS & they were all the same. Wifes Galaxy S has no such problems, my son Moto Defy has no problems & an IPhone 4 I have also has zero problems.
Is there already a report about this problem on the Nexus S official support forum?

Get someone who rooted using Superboot to dump the stock one?
What is Modem?
Modem/Radio/Baseband is basically a driver which receives and sends Mobile Network signals as well as handling switching between GPRS, 3G, HSDPA etcodem?
Are they firmware specific?
Modems are not firmware specific. You can install any modem for the Galaxy S3 to any firmware, (*** T variants have their own modem version for network compatability),
Why is a good modem important?
If your phone has to constanly search for signals and lock on to them it not only gives you a poor call and data quality but also drains your battery.
Where I can Download different Modems?
You can check it here
What is RIL?
The RIL is a program between the Radio and the ROM. It communicates with the hardware and supplies an interface for the ROM so it can use the hardware.
What does it mean?
Think of it as the device driver you have to install to your PC when you're adding a modem, so that the PC would recognize and work with the modem. In short it acts as a translator between the hardware and your software.
How do check if I have a compatible Modem & RIL on my phone?
There is a certain app on the market called GetRIL, it attempts to match RIL, (Radio Interface Layer), with your modem for a more efficient operation.
What will a modem with matching RIL give me?
Simple.
You will have an even better network connectivity (eg. E, G, 3G, H, H+). For example, I am now consistently getting a H+ connection where previously I would only be getting H at best. This will obviously improve your speeds during browsing, the more chance you have for Fast Dormancy to work as it should, thereby saving battery
Is it Important?
That of course depend you users. If you think its worth a try.
So is it Okay to flash different firmware on different Regions?
That depends on the user.
How do I Check if I have a compatible Modem - RIL on my phone?
There ia an App on the market called GETRIL wherein it checks your modem ril compatability
"Check Attachments Below"
How do i check if I have a good signal?
There is an app on the market Network Signal Pro wherein you can monitor your connection signal for stability
Does modem affect Wifi?
Certainly Not, wifi is controled by a kernel not modem
This should be helpfull to you guys especially those who are flashaholics and newbies
Please Press Thanks
*Reserved*
Should I make this a Wiki?
Is this relevant?
What do you think guys?
Its relevant if RIL makes a difference to the majority .
But as you know the majority probably have the wrong RIL i know i have .
But yes either added to the stickies or the Wiki.
jje
Of course it should be a wiki, I've already done these process and I realized that i was with the wrong RIL
IDK if it's just an impression but my conection seems to be a little faster now
thanks for this guide!
Edit: I was also having issues with BBS with the statements "No data connection" and "No or Unknown Signal" with the ration on 100%
I'm checking if this will be solved with this fixing of RIL
Yep certainly does.. I think so too..
Having a compatible Modem RIL really is an advantage compared to flashing without checking Modem-RIL compatablities...
RIL acts as a translator between the hardware and the software ...
So get a smart translator. The one who can translate well. =)

Can anyone make tar modems flashable via odin?
Good guide, maybe add that I9300T modems work fine on I9300 phones and the way around as this question comes up quite often in Q&A as well as the modern collection thread, maybe also link that collection to your guide.

Hmmm... speedtest shows me 5.72Mbps down, 1.54Mbps up (and signal is not the best in my area, I have approx 29%, -91dBm according to Network signal)
According to GetRIL - baseband XXDLID, RIL - unknown
Now lets put matching RIL.... done... reboot... done and, lets re-check speed: the result is exactly same.
So, is the matching RIL a must, or a maybe?
Same for me. A mismatched 9300t modem gives me faster speeds than an LID or LIB modem matched. Matching RIL made no difference to my speed tests.
I doubt it's a must

Importance of Modem RIL depends on you users.
Just be reminded that RIL acts as a translator between your modem(hardware) and your software(operating system)
SO if anything is not matched would there be discrepancies?
So we are talking about stable connectivity thus resulting greater improvement on battery and speed on that matter.
H+ is much faster compared to H, 3G, E.
I didn't say its a must so you decide =)

Can U prove it? Especially I'm interested with battery life: stable connection means no switch between network types, for example, with mismatched RIL, I have drop of 8% per night

Yes, and you can be surprised, but LTE is even faster, so what?
spending even 30s on matching the RIL, when there is no proof that it is better.
Are you on latin america mexico brasil ??
I suggest get baseband/modem dlid and matching ril
I have personaly tested to many modems and tested speed test and stuff
Try it youll see the difference salud

Hi all,
I am experiencing occasional wifi drops when streaming music. Unfortunately, this is a known problem on stock. Some custom kernels (e.g., Franco's) have made some improvements to the kernel to prevent these wifi drops. I know I can use one of those kernels, but I prefer them stock and moreover, I prefer to compile the system myself. However, I cannot find these changes that fix the wifi issue (I browsed through all the developer's github accounts, but can't find it). Could someone point me in the right direction? Which files should be altered? Thanks in advance!!
Mark
Franco uses stock WiFi drivers. He didn't tweak/modify them. The WiFi issue has to be fixed by Google. It's been a known issue. Interestingly enough I haven't experience it yet.
Probably you should really ask the developers about it.

Thanks. I know I could ask the developers, but I thought I'd try it here first (so i wouldn't bother them) I read something about fixing the wifi issue in changelogs, so that's why I assumed some developers had tweaked the drivers. But I'll ask them!

it could be a weak modem, but i'm keeping my hopes that it is software related
I noticed this only happens with certain roms even when I had my HTC One, it's one of the reasons I stay with CM more often than not is I never get drops with it
It happens in certain areas more than others, in some cities I get an incredible signal and can download to my satisfaction, in others I can't get more than 5mb downloaded before it slows and drops and I have to restart the download. Download managers with resume capability are a help.
I've compiled a couple of builds for the Infuse 4g and with none of them can I connect to mobile network (WiFi works fine).
