[Q] Screen cracked with PIN, method to access files? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, sorry for asking what is probably an oft asked topic.
So, my screen has shattered pretty badly along the front, but the lcd display and the physical buttons work, but sadly no touch screen.
My phone is:
NOT rooted.
USB debugging is NOT enabled.
Is there a way to access the files on my phone?
I have already taken a look at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415195
which refers to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266654
however, I am needed to have USB debugging enabled, to my understanding?
also looked at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2210955&page=4
but that too needs Clockwork recovery to be working?
Any other options?

That was the method used in the 3rd url posted I believe.
Unless stock recovery is a default recovery on the nexus 4 phones? However, when i fastboot, then, using volume controls, go to recovery, it gives me the message "no command"?

You use volume button and select recovery then it says no commqnd?

Ah, yes, I got that now! Attempted clear cache partition, and then use to "reboot now" button, however, when booting up, it recognizes it as a nexus phone, pop up the blank folder (as it is locked), and would not display a prompt to view files and folders, as other people have had happen to them.

Sorry, not sure what you mean. I have fixed my wrongly answered response above if it was referencing to that.

If you do know if you have adb installed on you're p.c then you haven't ?
Its part of the android sdk tools and will have to be downloaded and installed on you're p.c.
you can then run commands after installing it from the tools folder.
Just Google (Android SDK) and maybe watch a few YouTube videos then follow some of the excellent guides on here.

[Q] Nexus 7 won't boot up past the Nexus X logo

Today my Nexus 7 shut off because the battery died. So I plugged it in and left. When I returned it was on the Nexus X logo boot screen.
I now can't do anything. If I try to turn it off by hitting the power button nothing happens.
If I hold the power button for 20 seconds it just reboots back to the X logo.
If I hold the power button and volume up for 20 seconds it just reboots back to the X logo.
If I hold the power button and both volume buttons for 20 seconds it just reboots back to the X logo.
If I hold the power button and volume down for 20 seconds it boots into Bootloader.
From bootloader I have 4 options:
-Start: This just reboots back to the X logo.
-Restart Bootloader: This just refreshes the Bootloader but leaves me where I am.
-Power Off: This is the only way I can even turn my Nexus 7 off. But when I turn it back on it just boots back to the X logo.
-Recovery Mode: This just shows a android with his chest open with a red exclamation mark and it says "No Command". At that point I can only hold power for 20 seconds to get it to reboot to the X logo.
My Nexus 7 is completely stock.
What can I try? Any advice or ideas? TIA.

I had this EXACT same problem, what I did was use the process I found on theunlockr.com website, I would post the direct link but since I'm a new member it won't allow me to, hope this helps.
P.S. I googled "reset nexus 7 through fastboot" and it's the first option

If you just put a space in the link you can post it. Like so:

Thanks for the help. is there no easier way to do a wipe or restore? That seems unnecessarily complicated.

Sorry but what exactly does that do for me?
It allows me to install a recovery, which I don't want to do.
It allows me to boot into recovery, which I can already do.
It allows me to install a custom ROM, which I don't want to do.
What am I missing?

Its really not as complicated as it looks. You could even copy and paste each command. But if its something more simple you are looking for then look in the development stickies. There are tools there to do the same stuff.

Well you actually can't paste into a command prompt, so I can't cut and paste.
But it wasn't so much that it was complicated (certainly much easier than the rooting, unlocking, and flashing ROMs and basebands I've done on many devices), it was more so that it seems there should be an official proper way to restore your device like there is with many others.
Anyways I'm downloading the factory image and whatnot now.

Ctrl v will paste into prompt on linux. On windows 7 you just right click and paste. Check out wugs tool as well. May be worth checking out.

Actually no Ctrl-V just gives you "^v", but I just discovered that right-click Paste works. I never use right-click so I never saw that, so turns out you were right after all.
Anyways I was just kidding about the cut and paste, obviously that wasn't what was holding me back from doing it.
Thanks for trying to help suggesting something else, but I've already downloaded the necessary tools for this one, and like I said it wasn't that I wanted another tool it was that I wanted an Official way to do it.

lol, ya windows. Like I just said in another post I just noticed that. I didn't notice before because I never use right-click.
And regardless I would never use it to copy 2 word prompts anyways. More trouble than it's worth.

I edited my post to say what I meant more clearly. Linux is Ctrl v and windows is just right click and paste. I assumed you where using Linux and couldn't right click and paste. Hope it works out for you. I agree there should be like an ruu or Odin method. I've only been on the nexus for a couple of days and it is much different.

Oh I see, gotcha. Never ever used Linux.
I have the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 and all have been quite good to me, this is my first real issue.
OK, no luck, none of the methods suggested here worked.
The method on theunlokr doesn't just says waiting for device.
The JROMFlasher says no device is detected.
Wugs tool says Fastboot device was not found.
Any other ideas or anything else I can try?

There are a few different drivers for the nexus. Sounds like you don't have the correct drivers. Download the android sdk and install the Google drivers from the
SDK manager. When in fastboot type fastboot devices and it should list your device. If not then its a driver issue. The other two drivers are "USB driver r06 windows" from Asus website and "universal naked driver 072" which I found on Google. One of those should work but the one in sdk should work.

I am very new to this but I might be able to help if you have USB debugging enabled on your nexus 7. I saved mine from a soft brick the other day, very frustrating, but I got it.
I am guessing your boot loader is unlocked and you are running a custom recovery?
Again hopefully USB debugging is enabled.
I recommend mskips nexus toolkit.
1. Remove the back cover of the nexus 7 and disconnect the battery. It's easy. Just follow the wires coming off the battery to the little black plastic connector. Once you locate it, use something small and plastic to push on the edge near where the wires go in. Push toward the power and volume buttons. Let it sit for an hour or so.
2. Very, very ,very ,important!!! Get into your device manager on your PC and uninstall all drivers on the PC that say android, Google or nexus. I mean all of them! Check USB drivers for this also. To many of these cause to many paths for the toolkit and PC to try and follow. Get them all off!
3.after the nexus sits unplugged for at least 1 hour. Reconnect the battery.
4. Get into fast boot mode-power/volume/up/down and plug the nexus into the PC. Let the drivers install. These need to be the only ones on the PC at this time!
5. Open mskips toolkit and check for serial number. Refresh toolkit and or switch USB ports on PC if serial number does not show. It will.
6. On the toolkit try option 5 first. Rename recovery.
7. Then option 6. Reflash custom recovery.( I had to do this three times).
8. Download and flash factory image.
9. Root using the toolkit.
10. Start flashing again.
When the toolkit gave me an error I went back and started over, this happened a few times.
This saved my nexus 7 from being smashed by a sledge hammer and thrown in the garbage. This was very frustrating for me but I got it.
Thanks to mskip

I had the correct drivers according to Wugs, but I removed all of them (and dozens of other old ones from other phones and tablets) and then reinstalled.
Wugs still failed to do a wipe so I used it to unlock my bootloader instead (in hopes of re-trying to do a wipe afterwards) and then it finally booted up.
So it is now fixed. Yay!
Thanks.

[Q] nexus 4 Any way to copy data (broken touch input - physical buttons work fine)

Dropped my nexus 4 yesterday and it fell right on the edge of the screen shattering it. First time I've broken a phone, and this one seems like a particularly bad one to have broken - no reasonable price screen replacement with the screen attached to the digitizer.
Anyway the phone boots up and charges fine, but I can't unlock it, which means my computer isn't connecting to it. Is there any way I can save all of my photos and other files?

To be clear, I can't check because I can't get past the lock screen. I also have no way of turning the phone off, I just have to wait until the battery runs out and then I have one chance to turn it on. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do in recovery mode that might help?

Setup adb http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-set-up-android-adb-and-fastboot-on-windows-tutorial/
Plug the phone in while its at the lockscreen, and run "adb devices". If the command returns the serial number of the phone let me know and I'll give you further guidance. If it doesn't it'll take a bit more work but we should still be able to get it done.

Set it up, but no devices listed
It's frustrating because it's so tantalizingly close. I have a pretty good idea that when I send it in to LG they are probably just going to send a different refurb back. I find it hard to believe that they do a 1 to 1 repair job on each phone that comes in.

Alright. This is what you'll need to do: unlock the bootloader, flash cwm recovery, boot into cwm, use adb to copy the contents of your SD card to your PC.
Read this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266654 . only follow the parts to unlock the boot loader and flash clockworkmod custom recovery. Make sure that you flash the recovery right after unlocking (without rebooting in between) otherwise data will get wiped. )
After that boot into your newly flashed recovery and use "adb pull /data/media/" . this should copy everything on the internal sdcard of the phone.
Sent using xda-developers app
Search for how to unlock the bootloader without wiping all your data. Would be moot otherwise...
Of course if all that's been done in the past and you already have cwm/twrp, just boot to that and you'll be able to adb in.
Also, you can hold onto the power button for 10s to force it to power down.
EDIT: restarted and tried again, making some progress now.

Again, that's why we go into cwm/twrp. Insecure debugging is enabled there.
Awesome, it appears to be copying everything over now!
Can't thank you enough! Just saved a years worth of pictures and videos, that pretty much chronicle the start of my current relationship up to the present.
Of course right now it is just pulling all of the EA real racing data, but I assume it will eventually get to the pictures, haha.

Apologies, i was a bit rushed. So i'm trying to get all my pics/data off my phone as my screen is smashed and i had a pattern lock on. My phone did not have usb debugging enabled. So i unlocked the bootloader, didn't do a reboot, flashed a custom recovery and then entered the recovery. However, my device isn't recognised in windows once i enter recovery and as such when i run "adb devices" no device is listed.
In the original instructions, it says:
After that boot into your newly flashed recovery and use "adb pull /data/media/" . this should copy everything on the internal sdcard of the phone
So how come once I load my recovery, when in cmd prompt, "adb pull /data/media" doesn't seem to work?
I'll be honest, i'm a little lost at this point and just really don't want to lose all my pics and thought i could get them this way before sending my phone for repair/replacement (it is insured)
Thanks for your help

Before you can run the adb pull command, you'll need to get your phone recognized by "adb devices". Try installing Koush's adb driver.

First I press the volume button and power to enter in the Safe Mode? After this what's the next step?
Remembering that I can not back up through the computer because I need the PIN to unlock access.
Thanks guys! This is really important for me

You have the stock recovery, this probably won't work. But just boot into recovery and then connect your device to the usb and run the adb command

Any help?
If your bootloader is currently unlocked you can flash a custom recovery and pull stuff off, otherwise you're out of luck.
Have the exact same problem!!! I made a thread on it but no replies. atm my phone is working, screen started functioning randomly again... it cant be a software prob cos im on complete stock (root), must be hardware but it still randomly works

Please help! Big issue here

Hey all!
My wife's nexus 4 screen is just dead! Latest signs of life were some weird colors and black and white lines and now it's completely black.
The problem is that it's locked (pattern lock) and we cannot access the phone.
I tried many times to unlock it blindly but I don't know if it's registering touches or not.
The phone LED is blinking normally while I can hear apps notifications and calls ring normally but screen is always black.
I just want to access the internal memory to copy the important photos and some important files on PC.
As you know, a locked device cannot be accessed through MTP.
I dunno what to do, any help would be appreciated!
Fixing the screen in here will cost me around 200 to 300$ which is the device price! And I'm not planning to do so! I just want to access the internal memory to access the files and use my spare phone.
I know that also formatting the phone to original state will remove the lock but I can't find a way to do so while it's completely black!
Thanks!

Do you have a custom recovery on? Is your bootloader unlocked? If so you may have an option using adb.

Unplug your device from the usb and press and hold the power button go 15 seconds. That'll make sure your device is powered off. Then press and hold vol down and power until you feel it vibrate. Then release the keys. You should now be in the bootloader. Then press power up twice and then press power. That should put you into recovery. Then use adb pull to pull your data off.

The adb method failed on me 10 times although I was sure I'm in recovery mode!
Although I followed the steps exactly and I hear the "dong" sound on PC that the device is now connected,
adb devices command gives me nothing
and adb shell gives me error: no device connected
Of course to do that I have drivers installed and androidSDK too... I even followed an online guide to make sure I'm doing everything right...
I'm desperate now
Do you think these might work from bootloader instead of recovery?
If so could you please remind me how to reach it?
Thanks anyways man!

Google 15 second adb install xda. Try those drivers. It could be just a driver issue. Do use the command adb devices first and hopefully you'll get your device recognized. Once you do then use the adb pull
You won't be able to pull any files in the bootloader, you need to be in recovery.

OK, I've done this simulating a non-functioning screen:
1. Don't have the usb plugged into the phone. Make sure the device is off, press and hold power for 15 seconds
2. Press and hold vol down and power simultaneously, when you feel the vibration release both keys
3. Press vol up twice then press power. It should vibrate once as it enters recovery, give it 15 seconds to boot into recovery
4. Plug in the usb cable
5. Open a cmd window on your pc and type adb devices. It should recognize the connected device
6. If your device is recognized use adb pull /sdcard/ c:\sdcard Have the c:\sdcard folder on your pc beforehand
If your device is not recognized got to device manager and see if there is a usb port with an exclamation mark on it. If there is you don't have the drivers set up right. Right click on that usb port and go to update driver software, go to browse my computer and let me pick from a list on the computer. Chose android composite adb interface. It'll probably ask you if your sure, just say yes.

Bro bro bro it works!!!! Thank you thank you! It was a driver issue!
However, I am holding the laptop right now and I tried:
adb pull /sdcard/ etc...
and
adb pull /mnt/scard/ etc...
and both say remote object "/scard/" or "/mnt/sdcard" does not exist
What could it be named?
I want the Internal memory.
:EDIT :
Its working now!
THANK YOU!
Thanks a 1000000 times!

[Q] Broke my screen, anyway to get photos back?

Hello everyone
Just yesterday I accidentally dropped my nexus 4 and the screen cracked. The touchscreen no longer responds to anything I do but I can still change the volume and use the power button. However the screen is still visible and I have usb debugging turned on, so I wondering if there was anything I could do in order to recover my photos.

Ohhh, bad luck! When connected to a PC it doesn't mount as external disk? If yes, you should be able to read the data.

Here's what I'd try.
Form your PC, Google nexus 4 teamwin, you want to download a twrp image file.
Google 15 second adb install xda, that will install adb and fastboot on your pc
Boot your device into download mode and connect it to your pc via usb
Open a windows command prompt in the same folder as you've downloaded the twrp image file Use shift right mouse click in an open area of that folder and it'll give you an option to open a command window
From the windows command window run the command, fastboot boot twrp.img Note that twrp.img is the full name of the twrp image file you downloaded
Once you've booted into twrp you should be able to access your files on your device from your PC.

Thank you so much. I managed to get my photos back but I guess my phone is useless now. Also do threads need to be closed on this website or anything?

You can replace the screen. I've never done it but many others have. Google nexus 4 ifixit. See if you feel comfortable tearing your device apart and putting it back together.
No need to close threads
