Now I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for this, but I really like the iPhone's keyboard. The stock Android keyboard is nice, but it's not the same layout which bugs me, and its autocorrect isn't very good. I was wondering how hard it would be for someone to modify the layout of a better keyboard like the HTC one or something. The iPhone's keys are more square and they have a slightly different layout, especially for the symbols section. Another thing I use frequently is that if you tap and hold on the symbols button you can drag to a symbol and let go, and it goes back to the letters.
I'd think this isn't TOO hard. I don't care what it looks like; I just want the layout. There's one on the market called something like iPhone Keyboard Simulator, and the layout is pretty spot on, but it's not quite perfect and the autocorrect doesn't work for **** (at least on my N1 running Froyo).
I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like this.
If it helps give an idea why I like the iPhone keyboard more, I don't think the stock Android one is bad apart from the fact that its autocorrect isn't all that good. (HTC's one beats everything hands down in that respect.)
Again, I don't care what it looks like, though it'd be nice if it matched the stock Android keyboard or looked somewhat similar to the iPhone or HTC keyboards.
I don't know anything about Java, but if there's anything I can do to help someone make something like this I'd be more than happy to. I'd even donate if it's a good project.
Thanks!
I think u might be looking for Better Keyboard. It does have an Iphone theme, but well HTC_IME beats them all.

I remember trying Better Keyboard and disliking it, but I might be mistaken. Either way, I'm not looking for the THEME. Android is Android, and although I think iPhone looks nicer I don't see a point in giving mine a poker face. I just like the feel and layout of the iPhone keyboard. It could look like a turd but if it feels the same it's still a pleasure to type on.

I like the droid multitouch keyboard.
I am ready to root my Epic. Not sure where to begin though. Any suggestions? I have been using the Evo and I really love it. My best phone hands down prior to getting the Epic. I don't know if it is because it is newer, but I want to make the Epic my primary device.I like the Sense UI though(love those scrollable widgets). If I root the Epic will I be able to customize it and give it a more of a Sense feel that I am used to? Also, I know it is personal preference regarding which phone you use, especially with Android, but is there anything other than Sense (and Froyo for now) that I will lose going with the Epic over the Evo?
Thanks guys
I am new to this site, but I hear all the time about the cool stuff you guys do. So, I came here to get my hands dirty and really get into this thing called Android.
Well, I may not know much since I am new to Android, but I did get some hands on with The Epic and I didn't really like it. ( I own a Evo ) What I didn't like from the Epic was the UI. For me HTC Sense is way better. Aside from that, the Epic does not support FLASH at the moment. One of the other things you will miss out is the 8MP camera on the Evo. I don't know about you but I take a lot of pictures and that matters to me. Other than that I can't really think of anything else.
Well i came from the hero which has sense, and my dad has the evo, so i am really familiar with sense ui. Sense ui is very visually appealing and i liked it very much. You can get a lot of the look and feel of sense by using beautiful widgets, which has the htc flip clock and weather animations. If u want sense ui lock screen get widget locker. Some great things about touchwiz are that u can toggle 4g wifi bluetooth from the notification pull down. Launcher pro plus has some sense style scrollable widgets as well. if u wanna see what my epic looks like with these apps u can see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771597&page=3 and scroll to my post. Try out the epic and hopefully u will like it, roms are coming soon too.
Hey,
Thanks for replying. I hear what you are saying. And it is really a tough decision. I would keep both and then switch it up every now and then. I just paid for the Epic, it only cost me 200 at Best buy, but I also just bought the 360 Halo Reach Edition, so I have to get some of that back somewhere.I will miss Sense and Froyo, but hopefully, one day soon the Epic will get Froyo. As far as the pictures go, I am finding that I am becoming preferable to the Epic's camera over the Evo, especially for video recording.
yes I love those toggles in the notification bar. Personally, I don't mind Touchwiz all that much. Yea, iot is coloirful and everything, but they have some real good things regarding user interface going on there. If I can get some of those scollable widgets, like sense's news widget, the weather/clock widget with animation, I would be good. What about root? Are there some good ROM's out there for the Epic, that will make it worth the risk?
Thanks guys
That' s sweet. Is that the Epic?
I really hope this is possbile. The HTC IME keyboard is absolutely indispensible to me. It in my experience has by far the best spell correction out of any keyboard I've tried. No other keyboard can I mess a word up so bad, add in a few extra letters than the word has, and it will still figure out what I'm trying to say.

The only thing I hate about the keyboard is that after putting a period to write down my email, it always puts a space after it. Errr....
If the HTC keyboard can be ported to the Galaxy S and Nexus One phones, then I'm sure it can for the Nexus S.
It'll be ported, no worries. In the mean time try Smart Keyboard Pro with HTC Skin.. very very similar. I actually prefer that to HTC_IME, but both are damn similar.
I had switched a while back to HTC_ime as well. I recently got tired of it's myriad bugs and switched back to stock and am loving it! Can't wait to see how much better the Gingerbread version will be.

i just switched to smart keyboard pro from the HTC IME and i will never go back. it's amazing, and the dev is very nice as well
Smart keyboard is great, and I would use it over stock keyboard for sure...
But I re-iterate, in my personal experience, no keyboard comes close to the spell correction offered by the HTC IME. It is VERY forgiving to typing mistakes. I mean you can completely misspell every letter of a word, add way too many letters, and it will still pick up what you're saying.
Then you gotta learn to make less mistakes!

Check the options you can turn off auto spacing after entering a period.
I personally use Smart Keyboard. I would like to use the new Gingerbread keyboard because of the multi-touch, but don't like that the keyboard TICK sound is not adjustable and it's very loud if I have my ringer/notification volume at full.
Smart Keyboard doesn't offer multi-touch, neither does HTC IME.
I will switch to Ultra Keyboard when I get the Nexus S because it is multi-touch.
Huh? AFAIK both Smart Keyboard and HTC IME have multitouch. Smart Keyboard even has an option for Multitouch AFAIK.
I'd try this kitchen, should work and you can customize it completely, check it out Great way to have nice, working HTC IMEs

smart keyboard has full multitouch, you have to enable it in the settings, though i think it's on by default.
Also depending on your phone it may not work too good, i've noticed on my nexus one the multitouch on smart keyboard has never worked good, but it works alright in apps like maps and the gallery.

Those little things make life perfect and so do they make the Android.
Unfortunately they are not easy to find but if you do its like an "AHA"-effect.
Maybe that's even the good thing about them?
Still they make handling Android so much more comfortable I do not want to just step over them.
So I want a list!
Where would I find something, or do we want to setup one here (if not exists already)?
What I mean:
- like when you are in the gallery and select one folder and drag it, it will float through all images still in gallery overview
- or when you type into the keyboard and swipe the finger up you get the numbers and one more swipe you get some extra characters
Man that stuff comes handy!
Maybe you discovered on your first day but I didn't

Sorry, do you mean this as a wish list or a list of existing features? My Android 2.2.1 stock keyboard certainly does not do this.
Nein das ist keine Wunschliste (No it's not a wishlist)
I'm on FRG83D and it does it!
Hold the "T"-Key pressed, then swipe the finger upwards -> do this face
I love this "swipe up for numbers" thing. Its way faster than long press or switching to the special characters.
But it seems that features has been removed in gingerbread.
Personally, I've always felt the notifications system in android was pure genius. Its the one thing I *REALLY* miss now that I've got an iphone.

the iphone doesn't have a real notification system unless you count those in-your-face-pop-ups-that-interrupt-everything-you're-doing. hopefully they create a better notification system in ios 5

How do you do this??? I just tried it in my Gallery and it doesn't work. I pressed and hold on one folder and it just show the check mark as if i want to select that folder or all folders in the Gallery. I can't hold and drag like icons on the homescreen.

Very disappointed when I found this. Why the HELL would they take this out?
1: How easy is it to root a G2? I am very interested in running pure android on it.
2: Is rooting and going pure Android worth doing, or do you lose useful features by doing that?
3:How is the Dev community for this phone. Are there lots of people working on Roms and such?
4: Is there anything you guys can think of that I should know before making this switch to this phone? IE Hardware or software problems, advice, anything
5: Does the G2 have wireless charging like my Nexus 7 does? Does it have HDMI out as well?
1. Very easy, matter of connencting phone and running special exe
2. You don't loose anything, just warranty is void in when your phone is rooted, but you can easily get back to stock.
3. Not yet, but G2 community grows fast.
4. As ex-galaxian user getting used to buttons on back of the phone was pretty hard, but I'm ok with it now.
5. As I know only verizon version has this feature.
Apologize for my English.

Thanks! One last question, is Wifi Hotspot enabled on this phone? What if it is running a custom ROM?
WiFi hotspot works well, both for stock and Cyanogenmod .
Thank you, Razdar the Helpful! I shall sacrifice several beers in your honor later this evening!
No problem my friend. Making iPhone user pick android is always worth time . Feel free to ask if you have further questions about G2 .
Actually yes when going back to stock rom your running stock android... which is a pretty light weight operating system... you are loosing some useful features in the g2 such as Knock on from homescreen which can be easily solved with apex launcher or nova launcher prime... however things i like about stock are texting pop ups that are very handy if your in the middle of something but want to reply quick... also the calling pop up i think is very nice because you can just swipe it up and it cancles the ring but keeps the call going (very useful if you like to let people think you arnt ignoring them haha) but other things such as quick memo and the built in application Quickremote... many other features to granite with CM or any other rom its gonna have some features to but for your instance before roming id give stock LG's UI a try before you go to roming the device... i did the same and am having a very positive experience... also right now im running stock rom with pie controlls and its very nice without the nav bar... the full screen and LG's UI is a win for me... however im a ROM junky so ill eventually rom it haha just keep in mind things like quick remote and quickmemo/ long hold on the power button down to launch camera app... however i do believe quick remote is accessable on an AOSP rom just look through the threads for it Hope this helped

That's the only ROM I was planning to switch to. Yeah, I know, I don't understand how people can claim that LG's UI is as bad or worse than TouchWiz. Personally, I think people that are making thise claims are just looking for something negative. It's not obtrusive and features can easily be switched off unlike TouchWiz where you have to hunt for everything.
