Volume controller!?!?

Watch this unboxing video (made by HDblog) on Phandroid if you haven't.
Near the end, there's a few seconds of close up shots of the headset.
And it has + - buttons.
So from common sense/knowledge, that should be a volume controller.
But I'm not a fan of in-ear.
Hopefully, some no-name Chinese company would make one with the normal earphones.
Better yet, buy a headset with volume control yourself. Never used stock, as I hate in-ear myself
It does indeed have volume control buttons which directly control the main volume of the phone. Built in feature of the wolfson chip.
Should work with many iphone compatible earphones afaik.

nice to see volume controller.
@ hefonthefjords
is that a part of wolfson chip ? then is there any mods that can change the songs by long pressing the same buttons?
See here for demo...

N4 earphone jack problems

Hi guys, I just got my nexus 4 today. My friend brought it down to India from the US and so far I love everything about the phone. Its absolutely stunning but I did notice this one issue and just wanted to see what everyone thought about it.
The phone speakers work absolutely fine but when I plug in any earphones, the sound quality is screwed up. I can't hear lyrics of songs and the music seems to be missing an entire section of it. I think the mids aren't heard all. Even the ringtones and SMS tones sound weird with the earphones plugged in. And another odd bug is that sometimes when I plug in the earphones, the phone spontaneously opens voice search. Or when I select a ringtone or notification tone, voice search just opens.
Has anyone else had this issue? And do you think its a hardware problem or a software bug. All I did with the phone was unlock and root it so far. I really hope it isn't hardware cuz I don't even live in the US and sending it in for warranty is unrealistic.

Have you tried a second set of headphones or speakers? It sounds like the headphone connector is not making a proper connection. I've found that the jack on the N4 is quite tight. I have a 3.5mm cable that won't click in properly but all my headphones fit fine.
Yes I tried 2 sets so far and the same thing happens. And these earphones work perfectly on other phones.
I just noticed another bug. Voice search can't recognize what I'm saying with the earphones plugged in. But it works fine without earphones.

Could be a faulty jack.
Since it works fine on speaker mode, and the headphones work fine with other phones, thats the only thing I feel that could be wrong with it.
So it should be a pretty minor thing to fix then, right? It couldn't be a serious problem like a sound card/chip problem or something worse?
If its just an earphone jack connection error I don't mind waiting for the nexus 4 to launch here in India and just paying the service center to fix it since it should be cheap and I rarely listen to music on my phone anyway.
If it could be a serious issue then I should probably mail it to the US to have it fixed :/

Are you by any chance trying the earphones with mic?
Yes both of them had mics. But why should that be an issue?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Yup, that's probably the issue. Take my example, I have two Motorola phones i.e. Defy+ and Electrify. Their earphones are not compatible to each other and gives the same issue mentioned by you.
Try connecting an earphone without mic, it would be fine.
--
As there are two types of earphones with mic available, you'll have to try different ones to find one which is compatible. For me, the earphones + mic for iPhone works fine on my Electrify but not on my Defy+
OK thanks. Let me try this out on earphones that don't have a mic. I don't have any around so I'll have to go borrow a friend's.
By the way. The earphones I used were the Samsung galaxy s2 ear buds and a superdry headset with built in mic

If it sounds all whishy washy and is missing complete frequency ranges that could mean the channels are crossing over into each other.
I really do think it's a faulty headphone jack.
this happens to me with s2 and lg 2x headphones

OK I just tested the phone on my friend's speakers and the audio output is fine. Guess it was just those earphones that it wasn't working with.

u were having a problem because there are two standards of the 3.5mm jack... one is what apple does, which was actually wrong but has now been accepted as the correct standard :| ...companies like Sony used the global standard up till the Xperia Arc of 2011, but with their 2012 phones they switched to the format apple uses....the difference is in the configuration of the rings, specifically when theres an inline mic included with the headset....u can test thing by playing a song through the headphones, when u hold the button on the headphones, the sound will become ok...

Which are the headphones which didnt work and the one which did work?
I've had headphone jack problems with both my Android phones before the N4 -- in particular, Pandora would prematurely skip to the next song because it interpreted some contact bounce or some such from the headphone jack as a button press. With the N4, I've noticed that if I'm watching a video using headphones (plain headphones, no microphone or controls) and rotate the plug in the jack, voice search will pop up. I think the Android software that detects button pushes on a headphone control is too sensitive.
It didn't work using the galaxy s2 earphones and Superdry headphones. Both of em have mics.
It worked with my friend's Sony xperia s earphones and with some random speakers.

Are the earphones supposed to go in at an angle? (Can't believe I never noticed this before)
It looks weird, never had a phone that does that.
Also, where is the headset icon?
Its the only phone I've had that shows no differences from having earphones plugged in.
Also, earphone volume isn't that loud at all, can anyone confirm?
seems a lot quieter through the earphones when compared to my One-X although rear speaker is nice and loud (and clear too!)
Your thoughts?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I thought the earphones volume was pretty low as well. I hope it can be fixed with a software patch or mod

Thank you for this excellent explanation. I had exactly the same problem with my Sony MH650 headset. I already thought my headphone jack was faulty.
And thanks Apple for bringing up this "standard".

just kidding.
i guess i will now pay more attention while watching youtube reviews and correcting autors when they say: "it has standard 3.5mm headphone jack"

Advice for good Nexus 4 Headsets

I have to buy a headset for my Nexus 4, but i don't know which model
is better spending 40 euro shipping costs included (or shortly more).
Obviously it must have the microphone integrated with relative controls keys.
Thank you very much in advance and sorry for my imperfect english

Mine N4 doesn't recognize control keys...someone can confirm it?
You can save some money buying just a mic+one botton headset
Yes, i meant a mic-one button headset.
Some advices? Thanks
I use Skullcandy smokin' buds. They have a one button play/pause/next/prev track, along with mic. Works fine with my nexus 4.
Samsung Stereo Headset
Samsung EHS44ASSBECINU Stereo Headset works pretty well with nexus 4 , I have it using since few weeks . Yes , it has the mic which works fine . Hope this helps .
how about using one button headset with analog volume control (slider) instead of three buttons headset with control keys?
is it still possible to control the volume directly from headset?
Sennheiser and Creative
Two headphones that I have tested to be working perfect on Nexus 4 are -
1) Sennheiser cx 275s(has an inbuilt mic and a call recieve/end button) but is a bit costly.
2) Creative EP630 ( no inbuilt mic/Volume control).
Maybe Philips citiscape uptown? they are a bargain for the quality

There are lots of good brands and you can go up to $300 or more depend on the models. Most of the expensive ones tends to be in ear monitors however, which isn't ideal, but Sennheiser and Etymotic are worth looking at.
For open earbuds, I use the palm pre headset which is cheap, but the sound quality is pretty decent for the price and its durable too: http://www.amazon.com/Palm-Stereo-Headset-Pixi-Pre/dp/B002CMEIW0/ It have a mic button.
I'd recommend something from sennheiser - they do good work. Don't have a specific model since I've been lazy and just using an Apple EarPod.
I personally love the Sol Republic Amps HD, but that's about 100USD, the Regular Amps is about $50USD, which is good, just not as bass-y. They are super light and super comfy in my ears. I recommend them for day to day listening.
I have since upgraded to the Munitio NINES 9mm ones, and are LOUD lol. Good headsets as well. GL!
I can also recommend you to get any audio technica or sennheiser...I really enjoy their headphones
Sennheiser cx 300-II with nexus 4, anyone?
Can anyone verify and tell me if Sennheiser cx 300 - ii prescision works perfectly with nexus 4?
I can recommend my Soundmagic E10M. It has the 3 volume buttons but the volume do not work, where as the middle button does work fine. The mic also works well and no one has ever mentioned about struggling to hear me.
I also have sennheiser headphones (no mic) and I have to say they are a top brand. Equally these soundmagic are great quality too so if you're going to get a pair, pay more for quality.

Thanks for the feedback.
I am gonna go for sennheiser cx 300 ii prescision without any hicups!
Honestly im dissappointed with the cx300ii or any low end sennheiser...the expensive ones are great but sennheiser is not that great for budget-fi audio quality. You want better everything i suggest looking at the jvc fx3x or fx101. Soundmagic e10 is also good along with audio technica ckm50

Cx300ii lack bass imo. My friend at school has a pair and he let me listen to them. Very dark, bass is there and accurate but no quantity whatsoever. Then i let him listen to the jvcs i had and now he bought them from me just because they are that much better. I own a pair of sony xb90ex which creates bass so real and wide it literally feels like you are in a movie theater.

I bought philips SHS8105A. It has got mic and controls. For the price the quality is great. There is a philips app that you can use to change the settings of control button and has an equalizer. This model is hook type but there are earphones too. I use custom kernel and boost the volume.
Recently got the Quad beats by LG and I love them compared to my tours. They sound significantly better and don't have the sound leak like my tours or apple buds. The mic is good for calls too and there's a play button that doubles for hanging up calls.
For $21 I would recommend these, especially since they block external noise for the most part and fit great in my ears.

Middle button actions for Soundmagic E10M?
Can you provide the actions that the middle button can perform? Can it activate Google Now (maybe by holding it down)? I'm thinking about getting these. Thanks!

Quiet Audio

How come the audio coming out of the phone is so quiet. It is not bad for headphones, but when I try to use an FM transmitter, there is too much noise. This is because you have to turn the car's volume all the way up to hear anything. Even at full volume it is too quiet. My brother's lumia 521 is probably twice as loud. Even viper4android with all the loudness options on max doesn't give enough. Is there any other solution?

With a custom kernel you can raise the headphone amp level of the phone a bit. I use Trickster Mod app for it.
I think the best solution is to buy a car stereo with bluetooth support.

Has anyone tried Etymotic HF3 earphones with the Note 3?

I'm very interested in purchasing the Etymotic HF3 earphones as I am a long time fan of Etymotic IEMs. I am aware that the HF3 model is listed as only compatible with iPhones, however I have read online that some have had luck with the volume up/down buttons working with certain Android phones.
If anyone has had a chance to try these with the Note 3, please let me know of your experience and whether a) the single button mic works as expected and b) if by Zeus' beard the volume buttons happened to work as well. Thanks!
I am using beats audio ear plugs works damn good.

If you like my post hit thanks .
Do your earphones have 3 buttons that work? What model do you own?
