In my root folder copied directly from the phone I have an 'android' folder that has a data folder in it with the com.google.android directories and I also have a 'data' folder at root. however that folder has nothing in it.

what u used to make a backup? if u got just from copying and pasting from mtp, no way to get those things back then.(at least, if your phone had 4.4,but probably would be the same for 4.3 or 4,.2)
Be a whole lot quicker to ask your phone Co to send you the information. They will for a small fee

I got a dead pixel, Sprint has agreed to replace my Hero ... It sucks I'll have to root and set up my custom scenes all over again but it's no biggie.
My major concern is losing my text messages, how do I migrate them from one Hero to the other? Can I put them on the SD card?

There are backup utilities in the Market to let you do a number of things with SMS messages.
how about restoring a nandroid backup from your current Hero onto the new one? is it possible/feasible or will it cause a load of problems? that way you'll have the new phone exactly like your current one...
any experts care to chime in?

I'm not an expert, but given that Nandroid goes to the trouble of marking the backup with the unique device ID, there might be some problem with that idea.
OTOT, I know when the Sprint Hero was first rooted, people were passing around pieces of Nandroid backup images, so maybe there is no difference.
Just do a nandroid backup and restore. Shouldn't be any problems. But if you're not sure about that, sms is stored at /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db. Just back that up and push it to your new Hero. Then'll you have to go through setting everything back up.

there was a post around here somewhere a guy tried that and it worked fine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592798&highlight=nandroid+backup+phone
My kitchen includes an sms backup and wipe. Right now it doesn't include a way to push it back to the phone (that wasn't really something I was going for, there are plenty of backup programs) but it's another option. You would just have to manually push it back.
Thanks guys, I was having trouble with the Nandroid back up so I skipped it after rooting. I will move the SMS database to the new phone. Thanks again.
Wow. Suprised they would agree to replacing it for 1 bad pixel. I have two. Guess ill try it too.
Well I just got my phone, it's still under 30 days ... Still, it's a principle thing, they should replace it if you get a defective product.

Can you expand on this a little? I feel it's the least invasive way to accomplish what I'm shooting for.
I'm assuming this all has to be done on the command line? Basically I 'cd' to that directory and copy the file mmssms.db and push (or paste) it to the same location once I get my new Hero?
Sounds easy enough, I hope it goes smoothly.
just thought i'd chime in here. i restored from one hero to another (replacement) a few weeks ago and everything is still working fine. haven't had any problems (other than the gmail sending issue mentioned in the other thread...cleared cache solved it).

Type su first
Make sure you have a # prompt
That should do the trick
The phone is rooted I assume? Also you should just push the file to the new phone, it'll just copy over the old one

Yes, it is rooted. I'm trying what you suggested now. I'll let you know how it goes
Ok that worked ... However, I guess I'm a noob with Android syntax ... I can't seem to perform a pull.
I want to copy mmssms.db to my sdcard ...
When in the /databases folder, I typed ls and it listed that mmssms.db and telephony.db were present ... I know I'm in the right directory, how do I copy this? And how do I paste it back to the directory of the new phone?
Thanks.
alright... you should just type
adb shell
su
dump /file/path/filename
and then it should make a folder in your adb folder on your pc with the file in it.... in theory.
what is the file path? i will try it out

Code:
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
adb push mmssms.db /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
this will work as long as your mmssms.db file is in the android sdk tools directory. wham bam thank you ma'am
Hi.
Does anyone know how to access them so you're not having to create new folders on the SD?
Could you be any more clear?

Don't really understand your question but if you are after the locations of the default wallpapers and ringtones then you can find them here:
ringtones: /system/media
wallpapers: you will have to unpack the /system/app/Launcher.apk, wallpapers are inside the res/drawable-240dpi

Hi.
There are default wallpapers on the phone, so I would like to put any new ones in the same folder which isn't on the sd card, and I've found the "notification" folder on the sd card but the default tones aren't in there, so I'm guessing I need to access the phone memory to make any changes.
This is my first Android phone so I'm finding my way around just now.

Ok, I think I understand you better now. So, like I said, the location for the ringtones is what I already mentioned. Since this is the system partition, you will need root access and remount the /system partition into read/write mode in order to be able to add files to the directory.
For the wallpapers, this was just a quick check, but like I said, the Launcher.apk has the wallpapers bundled within it. You can easily rip it, take it apart using apktool and add or replace the default wallpapers.
IMHO though, it is lot simpler to add a new folder on the SD card and use applications like ASTRO or handcent sms to set ringtones/wallpapers for you.

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing as the ringtones in my notification folder couldn't be selected as ringtones i.e they didn't even show up, but did show up for messaging, so I created a new folder "Ringtones" on the SD, bobbed a few files in there and now they show up as selectable tones.
Thanks for the advice though.

Because you're changing the software on the phone, so if you have any problems it will be your fault in the eyes of the Operator/SE.
But how do they know that I have rooted phone ?

lol they wont know a thing until you take your rooted phone to the service centre for repair but before you do so you can roll back to original firmware and they wont notice a thing..

I would assume it's from whatever diagnostics they would run to diagnose any issues you claim to be having.
Maybe, but i won't risk and root it, maybe will something go wrong and then....
Sorry, maybe i found media.zip...

Not full understanding what your saying, but on most builds that were missing the media folder, simply create one on your sd card and your all set.

You must extract the zip. There will be a folder media.zip, copy this to your android folder. Start android and the folder will load
All of a sudden, I can't copy files to Nexus 7. Windows 7 64 says device has either stopped responding or is disconnected....which tells me nothing. I see others have posted this topic for this tablet but there are no replies. Tablet is rooted, running LiquidSmooth Beta 2 and seems fine. Same USB cable and I can see internal folder and files from Windows, but cannot perform normal file transfers. Where do I start looking for issue?

MTP or whatever its called sucks. But that usually either means that your device doesn't support that file format, the files are too big, or you actually disconnected your device. Try a different USB port, and give us a bit more info on what you are trying to copy.

Trying to copy a 7MB zip file. I looked at settings -- MTP is checked and there's 12.79GB available out of 13.24GB. Weirdly, I thought I'd try a file that was completely different, so I just copied a text file (2K) and it went fine. Now what's that about?
I usually use WinRAR to create zip files, but some on xda recommend 7-zip (changing file extension to zip) for stuff like boot animation files. Is that the problem??
I had the same thing happen... I tried an 11mb zip file, no luck. Text file or image worked fine... I'm guessing I'll just have to use something like AirDroid to transfer any file. This is disappointing that Google has done this. My older Android phones, I could copy any file I please.

Well, one thing I finally discovered is that zip renamed from 7z may be an issue...the system probably checks the file header (I assume) against extension to see if there's a match. Possibly to catch exe files with zip extensions that may be viruses.
solution
Just put the files you want to copy inside a folder, then copy the folder. works for me on Nexus 4

Just had the same problem. This worked! So the problem looks to be that the device can't handle certain files by themselves.

Which folder, in /system or on the sd card? If it's the one in /system, you can push it from my Rom after extracting it from the zip file.
I'm not sure, I believe its the sd card when I plug in the usb cable and I go in to my computer to see it thats where the folder is missing from what do you think and thanks for replying

You should literally be able to just create a new folder there with the same name. I believe it's empty, until you put something there.
