How can I tell if my N1 is rooted?

I just swapped my HD2 with someone for a N1, and I'm trying to figure out if the phone is rooted or not... I've never had an android phone.
When it boots, the little "unlocked" icon appears at the bottom of the screen, and it appears to have the "custom recovery screen" when I enter the recovery section of the bootloader I get this image:

I ask because the phone shows Kernel version 2.6.29-gad36b87 and build number ERD79, and I wanted to put froyo on the phone but was told only to update froyo from ERE27. I tried to flash ERE27 from the sd card using the recovery screen but keep getting an "unsigned files" error.
I suspect that this is a custom rom already, but have no idea how to tell if it's rooted etc.

Yes it is.
Seems like you have a stock ROM, but custom recovery. You'll need stock recovery to flash the ERE27 update.zip

or you can just flash non stock update like the one of Paul's

Will the Wipe option in that recovery screen accomplish that? I don't mind trying one of the non stocks, but I'm 100% new to this and would love to avoid destroying my phone

Depends how you want to do it.
If you want everything stock, then the easist thing to do would be to grab the complete ERD79 image, flash that and you're good to go, it should OTA to ERE27 pretty quickly.
If not, then as above you can look at a non-stock update, there are tutorials for both, so just take your pick.

Thanks for the advice, I will try one of the non-stocks, I just wanted to make sure that I'd end up with root access and not get hung up halfway through the install.

Hey guys.. Few Note 3 Questions

I'm 99% sure I'm picking up a pristine unrooted note 3 (vzw) on Swappa.
A few things I wanted to know...
I need my root, that is very important to me. What is the current firmware update and is it able to to rooted w/ safestrap?
If not, what it the most recent firmware that can be rooted?
I have done a bit of research of the knox "security" bs. There seems to be a few different methods to root now and keep the flash counter in check.
What is the best and most current way to go about rooting?

It depends on what version rom is in the phone. MI9 you can just odin over a stock rooted rom and then install safe strap. MJ7 you need to use kingo to root then install ss. Neither of these options will trip the Knox counter.

I'm doing as much research as possible on the note 3. I'm coming from a note 2 on beans 22, and formerly sgs3 on beans.

That's MJ7. Look up kingo and you should figure out anything you need. If you get stuck on something in particular just pm me or ask here. Good luck! NOTE: Don't try to use Odin while you're on MJ7 you'll soft brick and need to flash the.. Pit file.

Soon to get S4 I9505 (Build: NC8) - Requesting Recoveries / ROM information

In a few days, I might pick up a Samsung Galaxy S4 (I9505) with build number that ends with NC8. I recently got aware of the recent samsung builds that prevents recoveries, though I am aware of the safestrap method. I've been looking and searching through a few threads (and google results) regarding with what build number I'll be getting, what I can do with it. (Normal recovery or safestrap method) but so far I only get information regarding MDL, MF3, MK2, etc.
I was wondering if someone could pin-point me to the right direction to what exactly I can and cannot do with this build. I'd appreciate it. Here's an image of the version I'll be getting.

It's a dutch version by the way.

Safestrap is not for your device. That's for the at&t version. You have the I9505 thus there is no protection what so ever (besides Knox).
The build number is not important for rooting or flashing custom recovery. Just use cf auto-root and you will be fine. Pick the recovery you want and flash away.

Awesome, thanks for the quick responds! I appreciate the information, as I'd prefer not to screw things up. Guess I didn't pay attention enough to the "AT&T" version. Though I find it a bit strange that they enforce a better security on 1 (or more) version(s) over the other, while it's the same device.

I read through this Odin to stock guide, but due to that warning, I'm concerned that I might irreversibly brick my phone.
Does anyone have any advice on how I should proceed to accomplish my goal?

It's not going to happen. You can not put cm on your device. You're stuck with safestrap as the only custom recovery you can have and touch wiz based roms.

Questions on Updating the things

I have currently
OUDhs CWM Touch Req0very v1.0.3.4
And the below screenshot shows my kernel and etc.
I was wanting to upgrade my S4 to iB4STiD's Kangapop. Has anyone else tried it and still has all the stock functionality? The gestures, simple things, look at text message from person X... put to ear and it dials them? IR Blaster?
If its fine to flash, my other question is do I need to update my CWM version? or is there another recovery that is better and safe to update to? What about the kernel I use and the baseband version?
Any help is much appreciated!

I would update to twrp the other recoveries aren't supported any more. Look for flashify in the play store.
