[Q] Help - Bad Kernel - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

So I could not get the phone to root (super user binary issue) and I installed that SetUID kernal and now my phone will not boot. Can someone please guide me to a fix. Thanks

Set uid kernel? What are you talking about? The sprint gs4 doesn't gave a kernel like that.

Crap I just realized that it is a T-mobile thing. Am I completely screwed now?...should have following my rule and read twice downloaded once.

If you did flash a kernel with that name, it would explain your boot problems.
Flash one for the Sprint S4 and all will be good.

OK I am currently downloading the 1.4gig SPR-L720VPUEMK2-20131212171424.zip file and will Odin that onto my phone. It is still about 40min from finish so if there is something smaller then I could try that in the mean time. Thanks for the Info and assurance that I maybe alright.

Any of the appropriate kernels from the original development section will get you up and running. You'll just have to pick one for whatever rom you were one (4.3, 4.4, tw, aosp, etc)

How do I get into stock recovery? Tried up, mid, power. Just flashes the galaxy screen and turns off.

Ok so found out that I can get into recov with power plugged in. So battery is low. But now did fact reset and still galaxy screen the now just blue led black screen

ok so I am back running. installed mk2_stock02 from Dev page. Was able to get CWM booting and loaded the ROM from there. My next question, probably has been answered but this is where my problem started before. When I go to open the SuperSU I get an error saying there is no SU Binary installed....and then closes.

Install super su from market

Cwm touch installing over cwm. Recovery froze and continuosly vibrating

Ok so I searched and can't find anyone with this same problem. I was trying to update from an older version of cwm to cwm touch. It says it flashed succesfully ect ect. When I boot into recovery though I get what looks like some white staticky lines and the tablet continually vibrates and its seems stuck on that. I am able to power down and get into current rom though. But obviously unable to flash a new rom. What gives? I also tried flashing to twrp with gapps but that didn't work for me either.

No problem, I moved it
One of things offhand with your issue.
Which bootloader are you using? It sounds like you are on the old HC bootloader. This might explain your issue.
Which version CWM did you have before?
MD
Thanks for taking care of that for me.
I'm not a total noob, but I'm not exactly sure which bootloader I used. If your able to tell me how to check I could do that.
Sadly, I can't remember which cwm version I was using. It was awhile back so I have no clue. Sorry I'm not much of a help to you or myself. If I had to take a wild guess, I think it was in the early 5's.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Ahh! Found it. Bootloader v3.01
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Like I said earlier, I was still able to get my current rom running. I opened up acer recovery and installed twrp with no problem and I am currently flashing a different rom. I will check back in a little bit and let you know how it goes.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
meh...Ok so I got twrp installed. I wipe and wipe and wipe ans then flash rom. It says it was successfully installed. When I tap reboot I get a black screen that says acer in the center, but nothing seems to be happening. I'm assuming this is what people are referring to when the say its stuck on boot screen. I have no clue how to fix it.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah, 3.01 bootloader.
The problem is, you need to be on the ICS V8 bootloader. Those roms and recent CWM's need the ICS version bootloader.
I guess I shouldnt ask if you have your UID number? Cause you will need it. If you did some CWM's, it may be in the recovery files. If not, it's going to be a pain.
Try wiping again in TWRP, only this time, install a HC based rom.
MD
How do o go about finding the UID number in the recovery files?

Well, this will depend on which version of CWM you were using when you did backups.
Recoveries are kept on EXT SD, usually for example in the Clockwork folder. But, it depends which version created what. More newer versions create a UID.txt file. But it just depends on if you did any backups with some of the newer versions.
If you don't see the txt file, well, it's not good. All is not lost though.
It's possible you can install one of the ICS updates from within TWRP, if TWRP you have is able to install them.
That's why I asked if you were able to install a HC based rom.
You also may want to try finding one of the older versions of CWM, and try installing it through TWRP.
I downloaded an HC rom and placed it on root of sd. When I boat onto twrp I don't see the zip file. Not quite sure why though

Okay! I had an older rom on sd card. (Flexreaper) I was able to sucessfully flash it. I guess my question now is how do I sucessfully flash civatos JB rom?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
Not sure if it matters but the old rom I had is ics. Its flexreaper-r9-a500_0.019.00_ww_gen1

Flash the v8 bootloader if u want a jb rom. Civato has a sticky in the dev forum you'll need and check the guides in my sign if u need more info how to go about it. The v8 will also flash a custom recovery at the same time....and have yr jb rom on yr sdcard ready to flash

Means you rooted properly? Whenever I have to reroot, as long as I follow the steps provided I don't even get the custom screen, and this is on my 16Gb.
Use root checker to verify root though.

Oh yeah definitely rooted
I rooted an follow the instructions to avoid the custom unlock Icon. No problem it did not show. Then three days later when I started the phone in the morning it showed. I tried unrooting (then no Icon) and rerooting but nothing seems to work, still have the Icon. I used both method the original and the revised to reroot.
Yes. Has nothing to do with rooting 'correctly'. It will reappear eventually. Always does.

No biggie really. Especially since we have the stock firmware and ODIN in case we need to restore it to factory.

I guess, it just makes me wonder though, what's going on in the background of the phone that sets it back into custom mode. You're right though, it's not really a big deal since we can ODIN back

Installing OctOS with CWM

Has anyone been able to successfully flash OctOS with CWM? I know in the thread they say they only support TWRP but I would really prefer not to switch to that recovery if possible. I've tried 4 seperate times now and every time it doesn't even make it to the boot animation, it just hangs at the galaxy s4 screen and I eventually have to reboot and restore. And yes, I give it enough time, I let it sit on that screen for about 20 mins before I reboot and try again.

I have flashed OctOS numerous times with CWM. what version of OctOS? I am using 10/22 currently because of issues with the 10/31. Did you check the MD5 hash? Might be a bad download. I hope you can get it running. You will not be disappointed, it really is the best AOSP going right now. Good luck!
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
Interesting, I was trying the 10/31 build, I'll go dl the 10/22 build now and give it a shot. And yes, I checked the md5's and they were correct, that was one of the first things I did. Thanks for the suggestion, I hope it works, really wanna check out this ROM.
edit: Also, what cwm are you using? Touch or regular?
I was using regular 6.0.3.0 I think. I am trying TWRP right now since I took the plunge to MJA. I am thinking about going back to CWM probably the touch version. It really turned me off to TWRP when the first backup I made with it failed to restore. I have never had backup/restore issues with CWM.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
Yea that's why I don't really wanna use TWRP if I don't have too, I've heard of people having issues with it and I've never had problems with CWM, been using it for a long time now. I'm also thinking about upgrading to CWM Touch, but for now, the dl just finished so I'm gonna try flashing the 10/22 version. Here goes nothing!

[Q] Couple noob questions about CyanogenMod

1) What are the benefits of CyanogenMod over stock?
2) Is CyanogenMod rooted or do you have to root it separately?
3) Does anyone know if they implemented TextSecure in their stock messaging yet?
4) Is switching back as simple as flashing the stock rom?
Cyanogenmod is better than stock for so many reasons that I'm not going to type them all out. Google that one.
It is a rooted rom.
I have no idea. Check the changelogs at www.get.cm
Yes.
Keep in mind that Cyanogenmod is only available on a very limited number of S4's running <MF3 firmware. For the majority of users who own thus device, it's not even an option.

Just bricked sounds a little light hearted. Yes probably a paperweight. You aren't even going to get as far as putting the custom recovery on it. If you flashed in safestrap you would wind up with a black screen because no kernel support yet.

Not until hashcode can get the custom kernel hand off to work with safestrap. Then they could do something. Until then no AOSP Roms will work.

Random Restarts with 4.4 Leak

Hello, I was wondering if anyone else encountered an issue after installing the 4.4 leak. The install of the ROM and firmware go fine, however, once the phone boots for the first time it will just randomly restart. I can never get it to replicate doing the same steps. It can do it before I even do the initial setup, after the setup when doing basic tasks, or can restart back to back for a while.
I am using the Deodexed version and have even tried to Odin back to stock 4.3, get root, install safestrap and try again fresh.
The one thing I did notice, is after I install the ROM I get the "Custom" padlock on the Note 3 splash screen, I didn't see that in the video I watched.
Is my phone just messed up? Or is there something I am missing?
I have tried removing my SIM and SD card with no luck. I am back on 4.3 right now but would love to be on 4.4. I do not experience the restarts on 4.3.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you!

I believe, 3.72 is for KK after installation. I will try 3.71 prior and see if that makes a difference.
I will post back with results!
Thanks!

Don't install 3.7 until AFTER you install kk.
It seemed to go better. After the installation of the ROM and firmware the phone was working fine for about thirty minutes. I just let it sit idle with, then I got a phone call and it rebooted a few min into it. Now it's back to restarting every 3-5 min regardless of what it's doing. Running apps or sitting idle. I'm at a loss =/
I did have them after a dirty flash and decided to clean flash and never had a reboot since

I'm doing clean installs. I just don't think my phone can handle KK.
Guess I will just stick to 4.3.
I would try a fresh download too. Seems like isolated problems like this can often be a corrupt download

I tried re downloading the ROM, the odexed verison, the firmware, Odin, Safestrap. No success.
I will just hang out on 4.3 and watch with envy as everyone else is on 4.4.
