Is there any way to flash a rom without using safestrap. I'm trying to use the least amount of storage space as possible. Thanks for your help.
I use safestrap but I flash over the stock slot. This is not recommended by some but you get all of your storage space. There are many tutorials on how to do it safely. I am reckless now though and just wipe and flash right over . Ive never had an issue. Make sure you have a backup of your stock rom just in case. Worst case scenario you could Odin back to stock so there is really no harm in doing it.

I also use my stock slot for my daily driver rom with zero issues. I have my stock rom backed up.
Then I use slot one for testing roms to which I keep apps at a minimal.
flash with twrp if you have dev editions!

I had originally planned to sell the retail phone & buy the DE when it became available, but I changed my mind real quick after flashing Beans ROM to the stock slot.
I have a stock version of MJE backed up with safestrap but I've never needed it.
OP, I'm reading some of the replies here, and I just wanted to give you my input.
The Note 3 has a lot of internal storage, and if you have an SD Card, there's really no reason to be worried about space. If you ARE worried, but still want to flash ROMs, I would recommend buying a 64GB SD Card. That's what I did, and now I literally have no concerns about space, even though I save a lot of playlists for offline listening and store multiple ROMs on my SD Card.
If you don't want to partition your phone for 2 ROMs, just make a backup of your Stock ROM in SafeStrap (make SURE you copy the backup somewhere else, like your Drive account, in case something happens), and for added security, you could also download the Kies 3 app and use it to backup your phone that way as well. Then, just flash a ROM over your Stock partition, and it won't use much, if any, more space than your Stock ROM.
I don't know if that's the kind of answer you're looking for, but SafeStrap itself is a very, very small app, and putting the recovery on your phone doesn't take up storage space in itself; it's the backups that take up space, and if you move those to your SD card or to some cloud storage account, you don't even have to think about it.

I was wondering if I could get help or some insight regarding internal space with safe strap, I'm constantly running out of space and well it kinda sucks
Sorry I came from an unlocked note 2 and im not 100 % sure I understand safe strap so my apologies... Anyways is it possible to delete the original back up in my slot 1
From my understanding it is ment not to be touched but I think thats why I have no space I mean I'm constantly deleting text threads and apps now or is there a way to do like the SD swap that was able to be done on the note 2??
Or if you guys have any other ways of getting space I mean my biggest apps are like chrome and Google text to speech
Move your stock ROM to your pc and back it up there. That will clear up some space

Coming from another noob......I don't think you have to have a backup in your stock slot. I moved mine to my computer with no problems, I only have roms in slots 1 and 2. Also consider backing up titanium backup files to your pc too, that can be a big folder

I personally only use the stock slot for my daily driver rom. I just put the back up on my internal and it's there if I need it.
I will use slot one to test roms out but then delete the slot if I want and just keep using the stock slot. If you want to put a rom on stock side it's fine just wipe it clean first and remember to back up your stock rom.
This is how you will maintain proper storage.

So my stock rom is the OG rom when I first obtained root and my slot 1 is Hyperdrive can I delete the stock one? In place for Hyperdrive... Because that's how I have my phone atm and im gonna try and just titanium Strait to my pc never tried before but if that's do able I think this method would be easier see from what I've read everyone says not to touch the stock rom

If you want the correct storage running on the stock slot is the only way. Like I said I backup my stock rom to internal so it's on my phone if I need it. Stock slot is kinda dangerous but if you have a really stable custom rom you should be okay. I've been flashing to stock slot since safestrap was released for the Note3.
I loved Stock Android around when KitKat was out, but I came to hate it when Lollipop came out. I decided to get the Moto X and try out Marshmallow, but I'm already running into problems with/hating Google's (and Motorola's) oversimplified features.
Usually when I get a phone a put in an SD card so I can store some apps and data on there, as well as music, pictures, files, etc. that has been on the card for years. I pop in the SD card to the 16 gig phone ready to move Spotify and some other apps to the card, but then I run into that whole "format as internal storage. It says that formatting it will wipe the card (obviously), but it also says once I do I will only be able to use the SD card with this device, and when I asked a friend for help, she said I wouldn't be able to transfer data from the card anymore either.
I started searching everywhere on the internet for a workaround, but I can't find anything. Is there any workaround with this? I'm already rooted and on a ROM so I'm open to any suggestions. If not I'm just going to sell the phone or downgrade to lollipop.

Prior to this version, twrp was broke in regards to the new adaptable storage that came in Android M, then finally a few weeks ago, 3.0.0 came out, fixed that, and also a few other things. I can not use the combined/adaptable storage feature in Marshmallow like it was intended. To be honest, it was the major reason I got this phone and bought the 16gb version. Its all good now tho.

Can you explain what the problem is again? Starting with twrp 3.0 , adaptable storage should work as its suppose to.
And yeah I just seen 3.0.1 is out I'm thinking just flashing the .IMG will work, I used flashify

The problem is Marshmallow wants me to format my SD card as internal storage just to store apps on it, and I am trying to find a way to store apps on there without formating it, as I've been doing with all previous Android versions.
I don't get why you wouldn't want to use the adaptable storage option. What's wrong with backing ur sd up to pc, format as internal(adaptable storage? , and then copy back from pc. If I'm missing something, my bad.

Pretty sure there isn't way to do what you want on 6.0... But again, I don't know what you are actually losing out on other than having to back the card 1st, format, and copy back. A small hassle

I don't want to use the adaptable storage because I will only be able to use the SD card with this phone and I won't be able to transfer data from it either.
This is a problem because I currently use the SD card between two phones, as a makeshift flash drive, and as storage for my DSLR so I can edit photos with my phone.
I went through this whole ordeal myself recently.
You can't have it both ways. I chose to format my card as portable storage so it will remain readable in any card reader. The draw back is apps can't be stored on it, nor most app data.
To work around this i'm making every app a system app. This will alleviate some of the burden of the internal storage. Some apps will just not work as system apps. I think swype is one example.
Some apps will require their .lib to be placed in the appropriate lib folder under system (lib or lib64 for 64bit binaries). Google maps and hangouts are two examples that come to mind. You'll know if you need this if the app crashes when starting.
The ideal solution is to have a phone with at least 32GB storage or more. This becomes a non issue then.
Yeah, Motorola removed the Move to SD card feature in favor of "the richer experience natively provided by Android."
I think you can use TWRP "Partition SD Card" to create 2 partitions on the SD, though... a FAT32 partition to share with your other devices and an EXT4 partition that you can use to store apps. You'll need an android app like Mounts2SD to copy apps to/from the external storage.
The other option is to downgrade to 5.1.1 or use a 6.0 ROM that still has the old Move to SD card feature. I'm not sure if there are any, though.

To the op Sorry man, I didn't really know all this. But this post seems to explain it pretty well. Looks like you may have to sell or downgrade. That sucks.
As far as this specific post is concerned, I'm trying to follow my best. As you said, best would be to buy at least at 32gb well some, including me have already bought a 16gb, unfortunately. Personally, iv chose to use adaptable now that twrp 3.0 is out. When i Install apps, wherever they go is where they go. After seeing this thread, I'm thinking maybe there is way to do things a different way to save some space. I went ahead and went into apps and tried moving Spotify from internal to SD card. but after I did this, I noticed every time I close the app it signs me out lol wth... that's a problem. I didn't know why it was doing that. Is this an example of an app not being able to run correctly on the SD rather than internal? Also, i tried moving maps from internal to sd, seemed to be running fine, but shortly after, i noticed on a reboot, it somehow uninstsalls. Its gone as if i uninstalled it manually but i obv did not. Like what? How is this even possible. I wanted to give you a few examples of what i tried and what was happening. But I asked myself why am I even doing this, is it to save space? If it is, that's fine.
But yeah man, it seems you know more than me about this , that's safe to say. But based on what iv written here, can you give me some advice on things to do if I'm using the adaptable storage option. Should I be moving apps? Why? Which ones? Or just leave things as is? Again i have a 16gb model with a 32gb card running adaptable storage. If there are ways to save space by moving apps certain places I'm fine with that. I'd just like to get your opinion on what exactly I should be doing based on the model I have, size card, and running adaptable storage. Hey sorry too bother you about this. Yeah I should have gotten the 32gb version, although it's kind of my fault because I already had a negative opinion of post-kitkat stock Android yet I got the device anyways. Maybe I can resell the device on swappa and get a 32gb version instead of buying a new one, mainly because the only two phones of the 2015 generation I have interest in is the Moto X Pure and the One M9. Worst case scenario is settling for Samsung (as oneplus said, never settle)
To make matters worst, I temporarily moved all the data to my computer and formated the SD card as internal as a test, only to find out the two apps I put on there don't want to act properly because the SD card is too slow (which is why the feature shouldn't even be here in the first place).

If I do do one of those options it would most likely be the second one because last time I messed with partitions on an SD card I, somehow, bricked the phone. I could look for a tutorial somewhere, but this phone's XDA forums is relatively quiet compared to other phones I've had (especially Android development).
@Sheetzie03, I can't help you with adoptable space as it's not something I have much experience with. It could be spotify relies on other components which are not accessible when on the sd.

Harra! it worked, but then i still run outa space as it dosen't seam to to use the sdcard space as i had hoped. It's like it just copys some of the data from the apps to the SD card like normal but without having to go into the each app and selecting external sdcard. Kinda thought no probs I'll download a custom rom with no samsung apps and with a min gapp giving me as much storage space i could get. I can't see one, starting to think there isnt one. So my question is, is it hard for me to take my backup of my stock rom and strip what I can out bearing in mind I'm a bit of a noob and have to follow instructions from the clever ROM makers? not to bothered about increasing the speed and looks just the space. Would be able nice to update them without having to delete a few and re-install the ones I deleted. Any advice on what coarse to take would be great. Maybe theres a ROM I've mist I could use and give thanks for?

Hi,
Instead of using Adoptable Storage, make 2 partitions on your SD, 1 FAT32 for photos,music,documents and another EXT4 for apps data. Use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd , i tested it.
You can make 2 partitions using PC or with TWRP Recovery.

Hey i recommend rooting ur phone then download an app called move to sd card from playstore go to settings and choose download locations then select external sd card . Problem solved

Thanks for your reply! I went down the apps2SD route in the end. Kinda mest it up a bit but have free'd up nearly 1gb of space so thanks, that's more than enough! %) I ended up partitioning the SDcard and linking all the apps I'm not interested in, excel,Skype,Samsung etc. Anyway what i didn't realise was that i had mest the other part of the partition up. Ended up re-formatting the SDcard in recovery back to normal and those apps I didn't want 90% of the data of those have now been wiped %)

I have J500H, 6.0.1 and I'm following this forum for a couple of weeks. The "not enough internal storage" bring me here to xda forum. After buying SD card and realizing that will not solve the internal memory problem, I googled everything. So the only solution was rooting the phone. I followed some YouTube video, used Odin, flashed Super SU, some recovery (TWRP_J500H_MM.tar) and now my phone is rooted. But since then it is slow as a turtle, major lagging and using the SD card as internal storage problem was not solved, so I was left with the same problem as not rooted phone. Because I'm a total n00b, I was reading and learning about flashing ROMs, kernels, and stuff like that, but since I'm not a developer it is very difficult for me. Sooo....
My question is:
Can someone please suggest some stable ROM, which will primarily solve using the SD card as internal memory, and be stable and not draining the battery. And because as I said I'm a noob, please link some step by step guide so I don't mess something up. I currently have TWRP 3.0.2-1 Recovery, so let's start from there!

The reason your phone is slow as a "turtle" is because you used your SD Card as internal memory. Remember, SD card memory will never be as fast as system memory, that is why your phone is running slow, and it is the reason samsung did not include this option. If you want, you can do like i did, move all the apps like instagram, whatsapp to SD Card, there might be few crashes (as those apps are not intented to be moved to SD card) and uninstall all the bloat ( trust me there is a lot of it )
This way, i managed to have a ton of apps on my phone, and still have 2 gb free internal memory. The phone is blazing fast.
Or you can downgrade to Lollipop and use Nick Verses cm 13, gl

Actually I didn't use the SD card as internal... But I want to. When I rooted the device I thought that I'll be able to to that by default, but I never did. I never got the "mount as internal" option on the SD card. I downloaded some app I think it was app2SD or something like that and I placed instagram and some other apps on SD, but it never solved the insufficient storage icon appearing. But since you are telling me it will slow down the device even more I will not use the SD as internal.
As for the bloat. I have no idea how to remove that. Is that a simple way to remove all the bloat apps? I only have 8GB internal on which System memory is taking 3.24 GB, and the apps taking 3,41 GB with only few apps installed by me... all the other as bloatware. I would taken a Screenshots, but as a new member I'm not allowed to post links on my replies.
So that's why I needed to use the SD as internal, or flash some custom ROM which is more optimized.

With the J500H, most users are stuck on 6.0.1 bootloaders.
If im not mistaken there are 2 stable roms for 6.0.1 bootloaders.
1. Skiesrom
2. Cm 13 port by Zonik
With Skiesrom it is still in beta with many minor bugs but most are fixed by using different apps/settings.
Version 2 of Skiesrom will fix most of these bugs.
With the Cm 13 port from Zonik. The only bug ive really heard of was the mtp connection.
Check the thread to see if theres any more bugs

I've done it! And I did uninstall all the bloat, and it freed some space but not too much... I still have 6,88 GB used out of 8. Even though I only have FB, Instagram, Messenger, Chrome and two other small apps. And FB started to crush every 4-5 minutes or so. That's why I wanted to try some stable custom ROM and use the SD as internal.

You use chrome right, than why not uninstall Samsungs stock Internet, that is another 200 mb and you say u have facebook and messanger, but you don't understand that every mid range phone will lag woth those two, combined those two apps take almost 1 GB of memory..

I've done it! And I did uninstall all the bloat, and it freed some space but not too much... I still have 6,88 GB used out of 8. Even though I only have FB, Instagram, Messenger, Chrome and two other small apps. And FB started to crush every 4-5 minutes or so. That's why I wanted to try some stable custom ROM and use the SD as internal.

Use alternative apps for Facebook try Metal for Facebook, it's tiny and very light with no need of messenger to chat with your friends.
There're some stuff in root folder, for example in my j5 2015m there's a preload dir with games and more crap installed by local operator that can be "erased" too without really messing your phone functions.
Personally I don't use Facebook nor Messenger...these are "greeeaatt internal space eaters". Use Zonik CM13

Hey, I am in EXACTLY the same position as the original poster, literally every detail is the same; I want to use sd as internal, I have a rooted samsung J5 (okay, J500M in my case), and want to know which custom rom is best for this. The replies above were helpful but no one directly answered the question: which custom rom allows you to put any/all apps on the sd card of a samsung j5?
Does Cwm 13 allow this?
Seriously, this phone is pretty much unusable with stock. The original poster is not exaggerating, about 4 apps that cant be moved to sd (most apps) and the phone is full. If I had known I wouldve gotten a different model... anyway, thanks for any/all help!
ok first of all, do not use your internal storage as main storage and buy an sdcard with 16gb or above (i use 16gb and im ok with it) and put all the files to the sdcard and set the download locations to sdcard (some apps would work and others wouldnt). second, limit your downloaded apps or put it all in sdcard(only move the movable apps, i recommend using link2sd on it). third, use obb on sd(requires xposed) if you want heavy games with obb files work even if its additional files are on sdcard. fourth, do a weekly cleaning of your phone. smart manager will do the trick but its recommended to use sd maid for more features. fifth, do not use any adaptable storage(sd card as internal) since it will give you very slow performance and it will be a pain in the butt if you flash another rom since you'll reformat the sdcard again. and sixth, flash a very light but very stable rom(flash zips that wont go above 900mb or more) and i suggest cm12.1 rom by zonik and J2UX rom by mitko7411. i'm currently using J2UX rom and i still got 1.4gb free on my internal storage and ive been using it for a month now and no slowdowns whatsoever in this rom

hi guys so i wanna try a new custom rom or even go bac to the cynogen 12.1. since i am currently on stock kitkat from a nandroid restore. Was wondering if i go to a custom rom will i have have to back up my images,contacts,sms etc all over again ? or just flash the rom with the normal procedures and i'll be fine ? please someone guide me to the best current rom for our forgotten device by samsung thanks guys for taking your time reading this and helping me
The most mature ROM(for the I9301I) currently is the official CM 12.1, although Project Lucky is pretty stable as well. I would suggest making a copy of SMS history, contacts and call logs - there are many apps on the Play Store for this(I've used Super Backup.) As a rule of thumb it's recommended that you change the backup path to the external SD card in case things go south. Backing up the internal storage isn't necessary (IIRC), but there is always a risk involved when fiddling with the OS, so keep that in mind if you have photos or documents on your phone that you would rather not lose.

Thanks for the reply any ideas how i can back up my images and other files easire ? Because honestly using the normal way of connecting it through a usb and using the normal explorer to back up on internal memory takes agessss
Such is the bane of MTP unfortunately... You can download an FTP server app from Play Store and see if it copies faster via Wi-Fi. Your other option would be copying everything to a folder on your(hopefully fast enough) microSD card and then backing that up, if you have a card reader that is. Good luck!
